We're kicking off a series of deck techs centered around the new legendary creatures from Commander 2018. Today we begin with one of the most interesting: Brudiclad (BREWdiclad?) Telchor Engineer. It’s a new take on your typical token based strategy. Come see how Josh and DJ would tackle this deck building challenge!

I'm sure you guys already knew this, but I wasn't sure so I looked it up. Anyway, something else cool about fairy artisans, you actually get all of your enemies etbs *before* your opponents on their turns, because the active players abilities go on the stack first and thus resolve last.

That coin riddle annoyed me enough yesterday that I sat down and spent some time working through it logically.
This is what I came up with as a solution, assuming there isn't a bucket hole in my logic.
    The trackable factors here are:
    Which way the scale tips,
    IF the scale tips,
What way it has tipped before (which requires you to keep track of which side each coin has been on in previous weighings)
With those factors in mind, you can manipulate things so that you can remove multiple possibilities all at once.
I tried this a bunch of different ways, but it really does not work if you are not able to eliminate at least 4 at a time.
In fact, you have to eliminate at least 5 by the time you get to the last step.
    So...
    Weigh 4 against 4, leaving 4 aside.
Note which way the scale tips.
If it does not tip, it is one of the remaining 4 that were not weighed.
If it is one of these 4, weigh 3 of them against 3 of the confirmed normal coins.
If it does not tip, the one remaining is fake. Weigh it against 1 real to check it.
But if it does tip, you now know whether the coin is heavier or lighter.
Now remove one of those 3 and put it to one side, then weigh one against the other remaining one.
This will tell you which of the 3 it is, since if it does not tip it is the 1 you removed.
Assuming it was one of the 8, remove 3 more, 2 from one side and one from the other.
Replace the unbalanced side with one definitely real coin from the previous step.
Then swap two coins from one side to the other.
If the scale balances out, it is one of the removed 3.
You can determine which is the fake by weighing two of them against two real coins, making sure the two you
weigh came from opposite sides. (this is important)
If they are lighter, you know the fake is lighter AND which of the two it is based on which side it came from.
The same is true vice versa for being heavier.
If they balance out, the one removed was fake, and you know its relative weight from the side it was removed from earlier.
If the scale SWAPS which side is now tipping, it is one of the two swapped coins.
As above, weigh the two of them together against two real coins to find out which is the fake and its weight.
If the scale stays the same, then it is none of the removed 3 and it is neither of the swapped 2.
It is one of the remaining 3.
And as above, we already have a method for determining which one it is from between only 3 options in only one
    weighing.
Remove one, weigh the other two together against two real, not losing track of which came from where.
    Voila.
Apologies if this is completely incomprehensible, I typed this up in a fevered madness at 4am to get it out of my head.
Feel free to point out any blatant flaws in my clearly brilliant plan.
    :P

    • @Arvensa
      @Arvensa Před 6 lety +2

JLK indirectly just doesn't want to go down the path of the hugest Eldrazi, and thinks Helm is too clunky/do-nothing and easy to punish. And if you don't have both your Helm and an Eldrazi to make it really worth, neither of those things is great on its own.
The huge Eldrazi plan is better imo running new Saheeli as commander and Brudiclad as Lieutenant, and JLK's Brudiclad list is more smooth, consistent and synergistic overall.

try dollhouse of horrors($0.36) in the deck. makes a copy of a creature in grave with the construct token effect and it gets to keep its own effect as well. i used it on a chief of the foundry($0.12) and it got really broken really quick with each token that enters giving an extra +2/+2 boost to all of the others.
mimic vat($0.50) is another good one also. lets you cheese out a 3 cost version of something that died once per turn as a token so you can then have your token army be any creature in your deck. swarming goblins($0.01) is my favorite for this because you get its etb once per turn to make up to 3 more tokens. making it a pay 3 for 2-4 tokens a turn that you can then turn into 4/3 tokens with haste.
and for the game breaker in a copy token deck like this: Academy Manufactor($5.25). if you use anything to copy this card into/onto a token and duplicate it at all you will have fun. if you just 2 of these out and make 1 of a food clue or treasure you get 3 of each for 9 total tokens. make just 1 more manufactor and that number goes up to 9 each or 27 tokens. a fourth gets you 81 total at 27 each! this card is the most expensive i have mentioned but it is so worth it for the pay off. i have gotten 8 out and made a clue from a trail of evidence($0.25) trigger before and had to double check my math because it made well over 6000 tokens.

I was so surprised and impressed to hear this riddle here. I was exposed to this riddle back in the early 2000's when I was a child. It sat in the back of my mind for a few weeks before I came to the solution. This problem is so interesting. I have given it to many people I have met and have never had a single person put in the time or effort to find a solution. One disappointing reaction I have gotten from math majors is that they are confident they could solve it but refuse to actually try for more then a minute. Anyone who has stuck with the problem for more then even 15 minutes has earned my respect.
I have returned to this problem on many occasions to pass the time, so it shouldn't be to hard to get a solution back down again.
I was taught this riddle with golf balls:
so, you have 12 golf balls and one weighs either more or less than all the others, we need to find the odd one out, and whether it weighs more or less than all the others. We have 3 uses of a balance to do this. Solving this requires branching out into multiple outcomes of the balance, so stick with me. Each number not spelled out represents one of the three uses of the scale.
1- weigh any four against any four (leaving four un-weighed balls)
IF BALANCED 2 - take three of the un-weighed balls and balance them against three of the previously weighed balls
IF BALANCED 3 - take the final un-weighed ball, which we now know to be the fake, and put it against any of the other balls to find out if it weighs more or less than the others.
IF UNBALANCED 3 - We know the fake is one of the three balls we have only used once, and we know whether the fake weighs more or less due to the second use. of these three take two and balance them against one another. This will tell us which of the three is the fake using the information we already gained (short cutting here for ease).
IF UNBALANCED 2 - we now know the fake is one of the eight used on the balance. We also know that depending on which group of four the fake came form it will weigh more or less than all the others. This part gets tricky. Take two balls from the side that weighed more and one ball from the less side and balance these against another two from more and another one from less (a total of six balls, three on each side).
IF BALANCED 3 - we now know the fake is one of the final two balls from the less side of the first use. balance the two against each other, the side that weighs less is the fake.
IF UNBALANCED 3 - no mater which way the balance tips we have the fake narrowed down to three suspects, the two from the side of the scale that weighed more on both the first and second use and the one from the side of the scale that weighed less on both the first and the second use. Take the two from the side that weighed more both uses and balance them against each other. If the scales are even you know it is the third ball and it weighs less and if the scale is uneven you know it is the ball on the side that weighs more.
I hope you enjoyed my solution. I love this problem. I hope Josh actually gave this riddle a shot instead of just reading the solution. It all seems so simple once you have the solution, but most people struggle to even find the correct first step ( a majority of people can't even think beyond putting 6 against 6). One big key to the problem is realizing that all the information you are gathering is useful, even the balls that you have confirmed are not fakes can be used. I like to think it requires creativity to solve this problem, but I am still not sure on that point, my experience is people just don't put in the time or effort once they hit the first real barrier in solving the riddle. There are alternate solutions to the latter branch of this problem, but this was the solution I originally found, and is still my favorite.

Mimic Vat is on the decklist linked in the description.
Feldon would be great if you played more of a self-mill style of the strategy.
I'm planning on some kind of hybrid deck between 2/3 of the legends in the UR precon. If I go primary Tawnos Self-mill (and other-mill), I'll run Brudiclad and some Goblin Welder and Feldon. If I keep in new Saheeli I can Saheeli's Directive the Brudiclad combo out via Improvising with all the tokens. Or I can mill->reanimate them with Tawnos and Feldon.
The plan is to have a bunch of workable win-cons that fluidly synergize so they don't pull me apart chasing too many (Science) Dragons. Grindclock/Keening Stone Mill, Brudiclad Alpha, Mechanized Production.

I think I figured out a solution to the riddle. It was really fun to think about, the key is that you actually get information based on what's not on the scale at all. Essentially you get information on three groups at a time, and so in order to figure it out in three steps or less, you need the final step to be choosing between at most three possibilities. I'll definitely be checking out Futility Closet.
Oh, and the Commander stuff was really great too. I just got distracted by the riddle at the end...

    • @Arvensa
      @Arvensa Před 6 lety

I got it. At first I figured out we needed to conceptualize three groups at any given time rather than only the two you manipulate each time. Then I figured out how to determine any given coin was the odd one out, but not whether it was heavier or lighter. Then I revised so that you could tell which it was in a lot of cases, but not all. Then I made one final iteration that results in perfect knowledge of the objective.
Then I went and looked it up to confirm I was right, and also to confirm the general, mathematical, variable matrix model for solving it as opposed to relying on the word-statement, group chunking logic approach. I didn't bother going through and hammering out exactly how that one worked on my own because it is getting super late, but the walk-through of it that I found makes sense.

Feldon of the Third Path also helps to get the tokens of your big creatures out, you just need to have a bit of a loot engine.
Zektar Shrine Expedition can help you get a large token with trample into play the turn you go for game.
Lastly, though I don't suggest actually using it as it's too slow for Izzet, Helm of the Host with Brudiclad lets you snowball into a swarm of Brudiclad's. Having the Helm resolve first to get a non-legendary Brudiclad token, then have the original make a Myr, then turn the Myr into another non-legendary Brudiclad, putting you at 3 total. Next turn each Brudiclad would make a Myr and have it become a non-legendary Brudiclad, putting you at 6 + the Helm token(7 total). After that would be 15, then 31, then 63, etc. That's excluding any other tokens produced. You could simply make an "Attack of the Clones" deck.

Honestly, Bane of Bala Ged doesn't have annihilator, but what it has is even better. Annihilator puts stuff into your opponents' yards, and if they have some edict protection, it does nothing. But this still forces them to choose, avoiding targeting anything, then exiles, which short of something like Dominarian Squee, you're not getting around.

The first thing I thought when I read the Commander for the "big tokens" was some Dragon-token making cards, since you don't need to "tokenfy" it with those other cards, in case you don't have them in hand. Things like "Dragomnaster Outcast" and "Awaken the Sky Tyrant" or Tatsumana, the Dragon's Fang since it's "safe" from creature removal and it can equip those low damage tokens to make them somewhat threatening.
I'm hoping someone plays with that deck on the next game night, so excited to see it in action!

some free mana ramp would include the artifact lands great furance, seat of the synod, and darksteel citadel, you can put them onto protype portal and tap it for a free land thats an artifact token (also btw soul foundry is useful as hell for creature tokens you want to make, alongside mimic vat ofc)
if you can put isochron sceptor, you can have some options, if you put dramatic reversal and have at manarocks that can tap for at least 3, you now have infinite mana (goes well with mycosynth lattice cause everythings colorless, or if you have a 'tap for any color' mana rock even better). along side that, battle hymn can give you a red for each creature you control, so thats also mana ramp.
speaking of mycosynth lattice, using cards like darksteel forge, padeem, nev's disk, and others that in some way protect your artifacts make your board unkillable, along side being a win con if you have karn: great creator out.
some fun creatures to run that you didnt mention were pyreheart wolf, if oyu make a bunch of these it makes it hard for enemies to block, etherium sculptor and jhoira's familiar are two that make your artifacts (and historic spells with the familiar) one colorless less each to cast, veldaken humiliator makes the enemy youre attaccking's creatures all 1/1's with nothing until end of turn if you control 3+ artifacts, tawnos, urza's apprentice can pay a red/blue to copy target triggered/activated ability from an artifact and select new targets, and i think my favorite rn is slippery scoundrel, it has ascend, so if you have 10+ permenants you get the city's blessing, and when you do this creature gets hexproof and cant be blocked (only way to destroy these is a board wipe), and ancient stone idol which has flash and cost 1 less for eachattacking creature, when it dies make a 6/12 construct with trample.
then weve got stuff like storm the vault (mana ramp and tokens), cavalcade of calamity (damages from 1/1's or less), altar of the brood (mills one when a permanent etb's), and statue of the god dragon (1 damage toeach player per tapped creature).
some planeswalkers that work are ugin, the ineffiable, tezzeret, artiface master, karn great creator and karn scion of urza, saheeli sublime artificer, and saheeli the gifted

Other card suggestions for those who care:
helm of the host. It's insane with brudiclad.
Another clue card for you is Tamiyo's Journal. You can turn your other tokens into clues to immediately tutor for things.
Thopter assembly is good too cause brud can change all your other thopters into something else so every time you just make 5 more thopters.
mimic vat is good. Feldon is good. minion reflector is another flame shadow conjuring.
    Rite of replication.
scuttling doom engine is like "anti board wipe" if you have lots of copies.
