Show Notes:
We’ve all experienced it. Everyone is shuffling up and placing their Commanders in the command zone to start the game. And then the groans start. “Oh no! Not that deck…”
Today, we’re talking about our MOST HATED COMMANDERS. Those legendary creatures we just do not like to see across the table.

I like that idea, they'll probably get like 5 games in!
THAT WOULD TAKE FOREVER!!!
Get cEDH content creators like the lab maniacs or the spikefeeders as guests and play some filth!

You are a true man of culture.
The hero we need, though not the one we deserve.
bless you
thank youuuu
23:42 look at their hands lol
That is just creepy dude
Why play sliver queen, play the overlord and tutor her out.
My thought on every non-Overlord sliver commander!
It becomes another step in the process that adds a need for 8 more mana (5 of it being colored).
@@taloutezero But it allows for alternative lines of play--Hivelord into Obliterate, for example
Different strokes, I suppose!
@Nicolbolas2 Strictly different, not strictly better. Overlord is better in some ways, mainly as a tribal deck. Sliver Queen functions very well as a combo deck. There are so many cards that go functionally infinite with it that it has near incomparable consistency.
@@nnooooooooooooo The First Sliver is the new king by far, I could genuinely see it getting banned.
On this episode of The Command Zone, we'll cover The Spike Feeders' favourite commanders and why they play them.

honestly everytime someone does this type of lists it just seems like a whining fest. Its like wah let me live in my magical christmas land of circle jerking without having to deal with other people with other reasons to play or the fact that magic is a game of strategy and learning to deal with problems.
about 50 pyros true intellectuals have no taste or opinions.
They didnt cover the all star of your channel though! The gitrog of course, or as many call it "cockroach"
Collaborating is going to be tough. 😁
@@about50pyros55 sounds like you are the one whining lmao
I have a Grand Arbiter Augustin deck, but I dont' actually play it; It's mostly something I keep around as a threat, as a "mutually assured destruction" button if someone wants to get unfun.
That's hilarious, I do that exact same thing but with my baral deck.
Same
man i dismantled my brago deck that i was keeping as my no fun allowed deck cause the playgroup i'm in is p good
@@shenronsgoldfish i feel you i have a brago deck of my own i am always the target at the table first which is fine but i only bring it out if i see competitive decks out on the table
I do the same with turn 4 teysa infinite combo spam.
"Evil Adam is playing his Derevi deck"
ttuts mtg muddatah?
"That's no problem. I'm running Tasigur Flash Hulk"
I have a friend in my play group who plays narset and I had detection tower in my deck so I removed the hexproof and used luminous bonds so they couldn't die but couldn't attack and they got locked out of the game
What we took away from this episode:
The average Commander player doesn't like to play against Combo, Stax, Extra Turns or Counter Heavy decks.
Sounds about right.
Unless you're playing cEDH. Then all of this is welcome and more.
Land destruction let's go!
Ironically, the most hated form of edh is the one that hates less
I guess the average Commader player just likes to be able to play magic lol
@@benstafford8206 yeah, the problem is that this 'want to play magic' turns into "hey, stop interrupting my game so I can play my cards" so you actually have to not play what you want so the others can play. So funny how in the non-gameknights episode the professor jokingly said "hey, I didn't knew we were playing the 'lets not kill each other' game". Commander players usually think too much of this social aspect of the game.
Point taken. Social aspect will generally be more important simply bc you're more likely to play EDH with friends/acquaintances than other formats. Regardless, it is important to keep negative feelings about the game inside the game.

HAHA KOZILEK ISNT ON THE LIST IM NOT A TOTAL DEGENERATE WOO
I don't know why. We have one guy in our playgroup and that's all he plays and he wonders why we take him out first
Costing 10 and relying heavily on manarocks is huge dowside. Otherwise, green decks are a lot more degenerate overall.
I play an Emrakul, the aeons Torn based on deck, so.. no, you're not degenerate bro lmao
@@corekidfrom9700 Emrakul is on the banlist for Commander. Surprising your opponents let you play it if it's being overpowered compared to the other decks.
@@joeofthefallen It's very rare that I win with her, I don't have a lot of ramp spells so yes, when I can cast her, generally, I win, but it's hard for me to put her on the battlefield before turn 8. I succed one time to put it on turn 3 but it was just pure luck (I had the God's hand, all the Urza's land, Emrakul, a Sol Ring, a Quicksilver Amullet, and an Endless One), Turn 1 > Urza's Mine and Sol ring/Turn 2 > Urza's Power Plant and the
Amulette/Turn 3 > Urza's Tower, Put Emra in the battlefield with the amulette, take my extra turn/Turn 4 > Eldrazi temple (That I drew the turn before), and Endless one, that came into play with 11 +1/+1 counters on it. And I spent the rest of the game just by annihilate my opponants's board and beat them with my Emra and Endless One. It was my biggest play in commander, but it happened just one time aha. But for my friends, it was cool, and they let me play it even if it's banned because they know how much I love the Eldrazi and they know that I'm bad to ramp lmao
"Blue is the Most Hated Color"
for actual no reason. blue is just good. i think there is a difference between cards like ponder and necropetence. what is so strong in blue? the countermagic? thats like i would say removals in black are too strong its an 1v1 trade. Black has obnoxious discard spells ruining your entire game plan from scratch but ooh noo blue has counterspells so frightend. Only player who cant bait are afraid of blue.
@@dragonmaxim1154 Blue is hated because it's the color with THE MOST control spells. Really control heavy decks, regardless of if they're monoblue or azorius or esper, is someone just playing solitaire and not letting anyone really play mtg anymore. It's just solidly annoying. Yes, black can do something similar, but not as hard, and not as easily.
It’s also the most liked color
@@dragonmaxim1154 Counters stop fun before they can even happen. ANd much else in blue is about taxing fun
Yes
The basic Sliver Queen combo is Basal Sliver, Gemhide Sliver and Heart Sliver. You pay 2 to make a sliver token, tap it for mana, then sac it with the Basal Sliver ability. And then you're up 1 mana. And so, infinite mana. No need for Ashnod's Altar.
JJ Han I use heartstone, basal sliver, and acidic sliver. I don't typically like combos but 4 card combo is hard to get so I use it
Mentor of the Meek to draw your deck.
Yea I use this in my overlord deck it also works with heart sliver gem-hide and training ground
Add in mana echo’s and sliver overlord and one of the haste slivers you play your deck and win by attacking and you can get infinit life
Ashnod's Altar is a 1 card combo as opposed to your 3 card combo
Josh:
Prossh
GAAIV
Baral
Narset
D.J.:
Scion of the Ur-Dragon
Sliver Queen
Azami
Narset
Edric
Honorable Mentions:
Zur
Atraxa
Animar
Derevi
My girl made both lists. :(
sounds about right :3
"Honorable mentions" Also known as the ones that the majority of commander players don't like playing against but and they felt they had to mention.
No love for Marath?
I do not know, I never felt Atraxi nor Animar as something that is brutally overwhelming. Essentially it all boils down how focused and cEDH like the decks are. I played against Prossh deck that was Kobold themed, had all the Kobold cards, etc. no real combo in there. I also have seen Derevi Bird Tribal. Sure these are harmless, but some Commanders are just not there to be built harmless, like Baral, Narset or Azami.
Thrasios+Vial Smasher (banned in real life Duel Commander) is something really annoying or Selvala (the mono green one)
34:10
This is a message that a lot of people need to hear.
If you have a deck that IS NOT FUN TO PLAY AGAINST, then you aren't going to get to play it.
Congratulations. You have a deck that wins 90% of the time. You have no opponents to play against because it isn't fun.
If you're winning 90% of your games, then you probably need to find a better play group. I build my decks to be as potent as I possibly can, otherwise, whats the point? I'm not going to nerf my own deck just because the rest of my play group can't figure out how to beat it. How the hell is anyone supposed to get any better at the game if everyone just dumbs down their deck? Get good bro!
You guys missed Maelstrom Wanderer. Probably the best ramp deck out there, "combos" with food chain. and even un-optimized or janky Wanderer decks are still a threat. There is no "Mine doesn't play that way", as the commander ALWAYS plays that way.
I would build it, but I dare not make it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand, I would use this Deck from a desire to do good. But through me, it ...would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.
I had a Wanderer deck. It was spectacular. And absurdly powerful, even as my own little Temur homebrew. Had to let it go after a while. Way too good for my group.
He’s my favorite
I'd rather play against Sliver Queen than Sliver Overlord. The endless tuttoring with the Overlord is just so annoying.
Edward Burke yeah but sliver overlords usually play slivers. Sliver queen is usually wubrg combo shennanigans. Sliver overlord is a powerful sliver commander and sliver queen ironically is rarely a sliver deck in my personal exoierence
With Overlord tho if they take it over, you are likely doomed.
I use an Overlord deck and can pull of the queen combo with tribal or just for shits and giggles play primal surge
I pull out the 20 second timer. Your deck you should be able to find what you need.
Agreed
Some sweet GP reveals! I can't wait to see all of the pieces put together! 😀
gaddock teeg. "hey a good portion of your deck is unusable.."
I thought Gaddock Teeg might get an honorable mention. It is my favorite deck I have (almost all foiled out) and although it can also hinder me I still get groans when I shuffle it up in pods.
My most hated commander to see across the table is Meren of Clan Nel Toth. The amount of general advantage she can get over the course of the game is astounding and those dang table wide sacks and fogs are the worst.
Can't agree more
And at least in my experience, every since person playing the deck plays it exactly the same way. So not only is she incredibly annoying, she also never changes.
As a Meren player, I can see the issue. The problem with playing Meren is that you can get shut down by bojuka bog.
Shut down by lightning bolt...
@@aidandurrant3513 Yep I have a Meren deck and she can get shut down fairly easy. One friend tech'd in Relic of Progenitus in his deck along with Bojuka Bog. I hate to see Leylines of the Void too. Spore Frog was never a card my friends knew or cared about until Meren. :D But there are ways to counteract Meren and other graveyard shenanigans decks.
Surprised that Nekusar didn't make the list. Seems like everyone hates on him
My girl Jeleva as well
My Kambal deck loves Nekusar. At least, the versions of him I've played against.
I was gonna put him on the list, but I figured someone had already mentioned him somewhere in the comments. I see I was right!
I HATE Nekusar. But I personally think Oloro is worse, especially once my friend added Aetherflux Reservoir.
Nekusar is so unfun.
When I first played EDH in 2010, my first deck was Scion, my second deck was Grand Arbiter...I didn't read much about the format, I was just told the rules by a friend and immediately knew which of my cards would make the best commanders. The decks I used that my group hated the most were actually my Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir Control, complete with Palinchron High Tide combo along with Future Sight. My other deck was my Doran deck...people don't like getting killed by walls.
HaydenX obviously they hate being killed by walls when they've never experienced the fun of using walls for lethal. Build walls until the walls have walls and those walls wall in their wall-less hopes and dreams and crush the wall-less fools
Dj's face timing at 47:00 when Josh says that UltraPro sleeves are the best sleeves is hilarious.
My favourite combo with Scion of the ur-dragon is dump ur-dragon into my grave then turn him into a dragon with recursion to recur the ur-dragon.
Then ALL THE DRAGONS.
"They make the best sleeves on the market"
He said with great pain.
Idk the eclipse sleeves are freaking awesome I'd actually agree with him
@@theunsuspectingbagel4373 That's just the Eclipse series. Most other UltraPro sleeves can be ripped in half VERY easily. Merely put two fingers inside and pull. The seams just don't hold up and are known to separate after extended use.
@@Tamarocker88 I know the other sleeves are bad but I love the eclipse sleeves lol
USE KATANA SLEEVES.
i mean i've never had a problem with ultrapro at least for thier mtg branded/marketed sleves, eclipse is especially good, most of the fitted sleeves as well are pretty good too imo
I like DJ a lot, really cool dude!
That being said, he should sit straight... I don't want him to get scoliosis or any back problem. :)
Stay healthy DJ! Please!
I love that you mentioned slivers. My buddy an I both play Sliver Overlord decks, but on the rare occasion where we get to play two-headed giant I swap out my Overlord for Queen. I'm sure everyone can figure out how that usually works out for us.
Anyone know what the mystery card is? I’m just curious, since it is like two years later
I think it's a skizzik
My most hated commander (and associated deck) is Teferi, the mono-blue walker. A person at my locals runs the deck, and any card that isn't a combo piece or basic land is a counterspell. It's absolutely the worst to play against, despite his insistence that it's fun (which it is the farthest thing from), and because of it I've altered 1/10th of my EDH to hate against blue and countering.
Chainveil Teferi is pretty fun tho playing or against
Teferi is the closest I've gotten into cEDH, I only pull it out unless the group decides we want to end a game really fast. Or if someone gets cocky. Best thing you can do is tell this person how you feel and if it comes down to it, don't play with them anymore.
So don't play him, and have others do it. The best counters to unfun decks are to ignore the player
I run chain veil Teferi and it's by far my favorite deck I've ever built
LOL Blue Decks like that make me carry a sideboard for Xenagos which basically ensures that the blue player is not AS able to mess with my smash face strategy:P
So I once hit an Azami player with a Scion Bolas. He recovered on my end step. :P
When they said Scion of the ur dragon I laughed really hard because I’ve built one and it is a beast
I built one for my cousin. He was a noon using ur Dragon lol
How does ur dragon work in scion?
Scion used ability to become It Dragon, you have his ability for that turn which is good, then you can recur him from the graveyard with various abilities and spells.
That's my go to deck. I love it
Purphoros. I HATE taking 40 dmg to a random tempt with vengeance.
player: 'i tap all four lands to play a creature' purphoros player: 'on my turn i create 15 goblins, and repeatedly return this creature to my hand, and play it for one red, you take 40 damage'. one of the main problems with purpheros is that it is an indestructible enchantment, so its really tough to get rid of, if you are not in white.
@@janetlapham3919 Give it negative counters, exile it, make them sacrifice it, counter it as it's played, or shuffle it back into their library. 5 different strategies that any deck can access any amount of (which you would/should want in your deck anyway for interaction).
Purphoros player: *tapped 15 land and some mana rock* i cast Tempt with Vengeance and all of you get 46 damage to the face
Random blue player: I'm boutta to end this man's whole wincon
Counterspells are tempo advantage, but card disadvantage. If everyone beats up on the counterspell guy, they run out of counters and lose.
Except by then any halfway good blue deck will have its wincon assembled. That's probably Blue Player 101.
@@mugiwaralee9592 On what turn? The other trick is to do things while they're setting up their Mana.
As someone who plays a combo- control deck, you can't fend off 3 players forever. Especially when people are doing things on turn 1-4.
unless you play against Niv Mizzet, Parun. Then counterspells are card neutral and ping every time.
Man, i remember that game, where there is this Rashmi simic deck, and in the course of a full turn, he mananged to counter all our spells. Turns out to be the first one killed...😋
How are counterspells card disadvantage? It’s one for one isn’t it?
One that I built for my friend not too long ago. Niv-Mizzet Parun with the secret commander of Arjun. Cast instants/sorcery draw cards and ping down your opponents with Niv.
10:27
Meanwhile, I'm the percent that's had a Prossh deck since the precon...
Zo-zu all day
Land destruction, land punishment, tons of Mana rocks to survive stuff like impending disaster, mycosynth lattice and vandalblast and hellkite tyrant, heartless hidetsugu, Kiki jiki mirror breaker, to copy stuff like harsh mentor on your opponent's turns, manabarbs, ankh of Mishra...
I love it. My few friends, however, do not
I play this deck.
Usually results in an early death for me and roaring laughter around the table. I love it.
Not sure whether to be a patreon so you can compliment my name again 😂
hahahahahaha
Wow, Pauper decks out of bulk is an amazing idea in general (I do it all the time because otherwise those cards will never see use from me), and donating a decent pauper deck is a great idea imo.
I was playing Derevi, Empyrial Tactician, and my friend was playing Baral in a four-pod and he countered EVERYTHING I put out
20:39 "You would think they would have learned by now" - Josh Lee Kwai 2018 referring to card from stronghold.
I think he ment it in reference to thrasios who came out recently and also has only colorless in its cost.
Kaalia the vast with angels like the warleader and iona one of my favorite builds that my family asked me to stop playing casually
I like how it’s magic all in the background, but then there’s a bottle of siracha sauce 😂😂
In my playgroup, it used to be my Norin deck. Sometimes it locks the game down so long due to triggers I can't control. I enjoyed seeing them suffer.
Now I just wanted to win so I turned the deck into Purphoros and replaced every single group slug card with goblins that make more goblins and any thing I could grab that could let me crap out more tokens because I wanted to win.
First game day with him and I won both times I used the deck, by turn 6 the second time.
I think I successfully painted a BIGGER target on my head by switching up the deck.
there should be a game knights with the most hated commander decks, it would be fun...
DJ if you hate scion you should play againt my scion deck... I dont run OG bolas or moltensteel dragon because they are super unfun.. so youd get to see fun dragon stuff happen instead of just being sad lol
Ampherocity Yeah i also have a scion deck without the unfun cards and its great. If you dont have lurking predators in the deck you HAVE to add it. Its extremely good
@@oscarfogelstrom8363 Hahaha that seems awesome! I have cards like defense of the heart and stormtide leviathan in my deck.. its an honorary dragon in my eyes
Moltensteel isn't the issue. It's Skittles 😁
@@highdark4 Skittles honestly isnt that bad if you dont have moltensteel in the deck.. it requires much more set up and can be played around
Ampherocity Moltensteel isn't the only dragon with efficient firebreathing
That story about Azami winning with someone else's Lab Man reminded me of an idea I had.
If I knew my meta really well, I've always thought about making a deck that has "half" of every combo, and then ways to steal cards from other people. So if they happen to be running the other half of a combo I have, I can just win using their card, but the deck has little-to-no win conditions on its own.
Worth mentioning that there is a Sliver that is just Ashnod’s Altar for black mana, and one that gives them an ETB that damages players
I don’t have 1 specific, but rather an archetype; group hug commanders. And not even because they’re powerful, but rather because of the person playing it. It never fails, every single game; “but why would you attack me? I’m helping you 😏”
everyone knows you’re working towards end game; there’s no such thing as an innocent group hug deck 😒
Ive seen innocent group hug decks that don't win, and that makes me trust the guy playing it less xD
People run hug deck sometimes just to speed up games.
That's why you play group slug instead. Just make everyone lose life at high speed, but evenly. No one distrusts group slug because it's obvious what they're doing.
I took the white-blue-red-green commander from the partner set, the one that lets everyone draw or ramp, and turned it into an eldrazi deck.
Although it usually wins with an insurrection or two.
Group hug commanders are fun.
Hate the player not the game
My first time pulling out my mizzix deck (now creatureless melek) my friend was playing the group hug 4 color Commander. When I started comboing he dropped a fog effect that stopped spell damage as well. Needless to say I killed everyone with blue sun's zenith lol
Note: They got 1 (in words: one) not blue commander there. So I guess what I take from this is: I'll probably be fine as along as I don't play blue.
If anyone is anti blue, they just don't know what playing around blue is. Blue is hated because counter magic mainly. My Rowan and Will deck has only 7 counterspells, and my friends say I always have an answer even though I don't.
@@RyeFields That's the problem with selective memory: we do remember the *one* time our spell got countered but forget the dozens of spells we resolved before and after. And a smart blue player holds their answers for the right threats. So of course they feel like they "always have an answer". Personally I just dislike the concept of countermagic in general because from a design perspective, I feel there is nothing one can do against it except join them and there is nothing else with an equivalent.
And you saying you "only" play 7 means that on average your deck has one every ~15 cards, aka you should draw at least one every game, therefore you "always have one" isn't actually that far of.
@@notsm well, it is a group hug planeswalker storm deck, so everyone is drawing like 5 cards a turn... So I usually do have one or two, but still. I usually don't use them because I tap out for big flashy stuff. I just find that there are ways around it and wizards just needs to have answers to counter magic in every color
i love that prossh was the first commander mentioned he was my first commander and still my best haha!
Edric and Krenko are my most hated commanders. A well-built Krenko deck pumps out so many goblins before your opponents can find answers, and Edric can control the board with counterspells, graveyard recursion, and extra turns to ensure damage goes through each time (death by a thousand cuts).
I do have a Grand Arbiter deck with two win conditions, one being Approach of the Second Sun and Azor's Elecutors. At least with those two, it doesn't drag the game, unless I choose it to be 😁
My most hated commander is definately zurr. It isnt the doomsday cedh deck, thats really not my scene and you can have your toys. Its the idea that if you play enought games against zurr its the same, dam, enchatments, every, single, time. I realize tutors are in the format and its fine but zurr is the most painfully linier commander in my opinion
Im with ya on that friend also i play gy decks and the amount of times a Zur deck has tutored out Rest in Peace... feels bad man
Zur is one of the least linear decks in the format lmao. Even the cedh version plays different most games.
Cylas Crannell almost like we arent in the same playgroup.
Cylas Crannell cmon, you dont think that maybe some zurr decks tutor the same enchantments almost every game where you know exactly what thr zurr is gonna play before they take their turn, and that some people find that kinda borig in a 100 card sigelton format? You cant imagine that feeling like a lineir and boring opponent to some people?
I despise Zur and so I cannot disagree.
Really surprised kaalia or sen triplets weren't on this list
Sen triplets is pretty rare, and Kaalia is really fragile
Kaalia is kind of like Jodah, you just kill it as soon as it comes out!
Exactly. Except with Kaalia, you kill her once or twice casting her is pretty much pointless because most of your deck will be within range.
Kaalia is annoying if it gets going though. A turn 6 Avacyn-Worldslayer combo is just obnoxious.
@@eamonbell6378 anyone who plays avacyn with world slayer is the worst type of person
Leovold was in one of the conspiracy sets, Edric was the enemy-paired creature included in the Animar precon deck.
I have a krenko mob boss deck with land destruction every time i reach for that deck box my friends try to find another table.
yo jimmy is back, when is he gonna be back on the show?
Considering how far ahead of time they prerecord stuff it might be quite a while.
He is an actor in Mulan so it’s going to be a while
well mulan finished shooting quite a while ago so maybe sooner than later
Never he was fired
I miss Jimmy. it was nice to have an aggro player on the show.
Y'all should play your most annoying commanders vs each other.
Good idea
Probably Roon and Brago. Just because the players I play them with have engines that just end with them playing by themselves
when it comes down to the 1v1 between my atraxa superfriends deck and my friend's anamar deck is intense
A lot of people don't like graveyard strategies (I do), but most of them can be shut down with various cheap artifacts, a tapped land and a free enchantment. Options for every colour.
If I win a game based on my graveyard, I will certainly loose the 2nd as my opponents sideboard in some easy hate.
Would like to see the same cards printed for Stax and extra turns. I feel like the players playing these architypes don't have to contend with hate. At the moment, the best way to avoid losing to extra turns combos twice in one night is to go home - how is that good for your magic night?
The correct way to stop extra turns is to time stop them on the stack or play ugins Nexus
I tried to use cardkingdom once all the cards I wanted was 5-10.00 more then tcgplayer

Sebastian Ruizsoriano TCGplayer direct makes cardkingdom basically obsolete. And eBay has so many safeguards to protect you from scams, it’s pretty safe.

I don't mind the negative topics. Like it or not these things are a part of our format, and I feel like addressing them is the way to go in order to keep frustration and resentment out of the game, which are the real villains in a multiplayer game
Addressing negative aspects of our game is positive.
I agree.
Other people having fun in a way that the game intended isn’t a bad thing. All strategies have answers. And, in multiplayer, it’s way more likely someone will have an answer.

I built an OP Animar deck in response to half my playgroup running Edgar Markov. Its mainly Captivating Vampire that drives me nuts.
Yeah, he never been so powerful. I hate Edgar Marvok as well 😧
Yeah, I feel like Eminence was a mistake as a mechanic. People don't even cast the commander, they just use the eminence for grindy advantage until they've taken over the game. I once milled out a guy playing Inalla around turn 25 (wasn't a mill deck, just happened to draw - and resolve - my mill card) and everyone else at the table cheered.
My favourite of my EDH decks at the moment actually is Zur, but the second I search out the Drake Haven, they realise I'm here to have fun :D
Forest, Sol ring, grim monolith, pass.. mountain, channel the suns, Scion, keep Sol untapped for protection if needed, pass.. land, attack player most likely to board wipe, likely no blocks because it's turn 3, tap Sol, Ur-Dragon goes to grave, Scion becomes copy, uncaged fury, kill player.... it's a thing i used to do with my Scion deck, because I was running a lot of ways to manage that/similar combo at the latest turn 6 which could then be repeated through other means
Everyone still calls them GP's 😂 In the UK Magic Fest is a Festival(Like Glastonbury Festival) for actual Magicians
Am I the only one that has a Memnarch deck in his meta? That thing is nasty to play against, specially if the deck is in the expensive side.
Even with Prossh, Titania and Nekusar out, we hit Memnarch first. DIE MEMNARCH, THIS IS MY STUFF!!
Omnath infinite ramp with Elves. Basically you watch your opponent guard with a huge Omnath then they give it hex and tramp and bowl you over for 100+ damage
i have an azami deck with lab man, but i mainly try to win by milling my opponents out using sphinx and the other blue mill draw card.
82 salty people here who think commander is about preventing 2-4 acquaintances/former friends from playing a game, and who use these commanders to accomplish just that.
Full disclosure; I play non-stax, non-control Derevi, and gave the video a like. People need to be exposed to these hard truths more and more, before the most refreshingly casual format winds up like Tiny Leaders.
Yeah. I just had situation in my LGS where dude just looked at my deck and just said half of it is shit and why do I even play it. All those tryhard win-at-all-costs douchebags are so annoying. I had Naya Angels with Riene. I know it's not the best deck nor is it "meta" but it's fun and has a nice theme.
the scarab god is the worse I can think of. I used to play Najeela. And I can tell, you become the archenemy when you play it.
Romain Verneyre whenever I play against my friends Najeela I never let that thing resolve
I have the same experience playing Najeela. I watched this video to see if she made the list. I have a hard time keeping her in play. Sometimes I get to feeling picked on, but that just motivates me to make it better.
Can i use dream stalker as a 1 card infinite combo for exp counter of Ezuri, claw of progress?
The new Lazav is pretty oppressive, too. What I find that works really well for oppressive commanders? Turning them into a 0/1 indestructible bug, a forest or imprisoning them in the moon.
(And for the record, Dragon Shield make the best sleeves)
I’m so honored that my favorite deck is one of DJ’s most hated 😁 I love Azami lol
Same here. Since DJ hates it and he is more into cEDH that means I am doing something right.
As per the "to the listeners" I'm amazed how you mentioned Purphoros as part of a 99 but not as a commander himself. Purf decks win so fast.
Because even tho they win fast they're not consistent and they're easy to shut out
I ended up taking my Purphoros deck apart because I got tired of playing Archenemy...
@@calebsmith7913 either the pods you were playing in were too low level so everyone had to group up on you, or you were playing Cedh in which case it probably wasnt archenemy it was just cucking you. Mid level pods are the best for purphoros because people wont single target you and you can politic.
"Punisher" style decks can often be a good counter to commanders like Narset. With effects like Pestilence, Pyrohemia, Aether Flash, etc. it gets really easy to keep low-toughness creatures off the table.
The term I think you guys are looking for with the sort of deck that Narset and Mizzix lead to are decks where "players take turns having fun" instead of everyone sort of having fun together. Either the player runs away with the game and people just golf clap, or that person gets shut down via their commander being removed on sight; either way, either the player or the rest of the table has fun, but not both.
Thrasios is my least favourite commander. he has no identity, he has nothing. he is just a 2 drop that ramps and provides color identity.
every thrasios deck plays the same. every thrasios game is boring af. no matter who you pair it with.
Agreed
yup
I mean there are tons of commanders that play exactly the same every single game.
He is a 2 drop that will win the game on the spot with infinite mana. Who else wins on the spot with infinite mana?
Shu yun the silent tempest. Hes a cheap build thats always killing someone before any sort of board state is established. Forget 1v1.
I built myself a Shu deck and it is absolutely brutal 1v1. Brutal to the point my friend straight up told me not to play it again. But, in a 4 player game, I have yet to win with it. Almost always gonna take someone out early on, but as soon as I do I’m Public Enemy #1 and get wiped out of the game. He’s easily dealt with in multiplayer.
I think that was my Uril deck that made DJ hate it 😅. I'm pretty sure I remember him eventually putting in wing shards, detection tower, and even withering Boon in some of his decks just to get around Uril during our games over the years. Didn't even know withering boon was a card the first time.
I had a Prosh Dragon tribal deck before ur dragon came out. It was really fun to play, strong and had very few combo elements in it, especially none, that were game ending.
Does no one play Meren in your group? A turn 2 vorinclex, or an it that betrays?
Allan Cerda most of the meren decks I’ve played against are all grindy, value heavy ones. I’ve seen a couple Sidisi decks that bust out a huge thing on turn two though. Saw a guy reanimate Jin Gitaxias turn 2 once, it was super lame!
in my muldrotha, i once built it as anti fun. turn one jin gitaxius. swamp, dark ritual, entomb, reanimate.
thing is T2 Vorinclex isn't inherent to Meren, it can happen in any reanimator deck in those colours. Meaning Meren doesn't do that any better than any other BGx deck
No. Does your table not use graveyard hate?
@@dewolx7411 doesn't work in Enperor
As soon as I see somebody is playing Maelstrom Wanderer, I know who I'm killing first.
how does grand aribter make counterspell cost one less to cast if it doesnt have an explicit colorless mana in the pips?
I play a Sliver deck, but with First Sliver, but I have a Sliver queen hidden in there.
I like turning my kitchen table on attacks.
My least favorite deck is Rhys, the redeemed. A deck of token generation to the max!! (may not be legal, it has been 10 years.)
Rhys is still legal,he got even more support in Amonkhet with anointed procession.
as for commanders I dislike? gosh, that's a tough one. New Jhoira is kinda annoying because most people are just going to play cherios and cheapo mana rocks to try and Lab Maniac out similar to Azami.
when I first started really playing commander, I really didn't know how important it was to have answers to graveyard nonsense and as a result stuff like Meren and Karador frustrated me. Muldrotha is kinda there for me because of how pushed she is.
Although a non-issue now, Leavold is a big reason I don't regularly go to LGSes. seriously, who the heck stomps someone who you LITEARALLY JUST SAW BUY A PRECON BECAUSE THEY'VE NOT TRIED COMMANDER BEFORE with that no-fun garabage?!?
FInally, and most importantly... how did nobody come up with Oloro? I get it, Life gain isn't super effective, but GOSH Oloro is just free stuff and usually played to draw out the game until a felidar soverign or Aetherflux Resivoir or something dumb can come down.
Agreed, new Jhoira is bunkers ! All the draw, all the time. And yeah, i miss Oloro on the list, all life all the time
If someone is playing jhoira cheerios, which is one of the worst build for her, if you kill her once the deck is literally shut down permanently.
@@cylascrannell5917 Yes, but no.
I've seen her going to the zone like 3 times in a single game, and the player still managed to play her, due to lot of mana rocks...i think it's a nice build, just like Sram Cheerios. All the draw.
@@REON-pw5ze right but only if you have your commander. In the cheerios build if you get her countered you might draw more mana but your going to be set back like at least 3 turns which can be fine in casual but if anyone is threatening anything you just dont play the game.
I’d love the history of benalia wall scroll though it hasn’t been available for months and months ☹️
I run a weird deck of Edric, Spy Master of Trest, but it is a group hug. I run things like jace belren (spelt that wrong) also mamoka center of the sea, jace memory adapt, I added things like experimental kraj to politics and buff a creature. I also run vow of wildness and vow of flight to buff a creature of an opponent and not let it hit me or my 7ish planeswalkers
step 1: go to edhrec
step 2: click on commanders, then top commanders
step 3: scroll down to "all time"
step 4: don't play any of those commanders
step 5: make a fun and interesting deck so that this format doesn't turn into modern
I purposely build decks that win quickly. Who wants a 2 hour long game when you can jam multiple 15 minute games?!
Because..its...not..fun to win that way. No one wants to play with you if you do that lmao
Honestly, I prefer to play a 2 hour game
Honestly, i don't think Derevi's optimal config is a stax deck... A commander with SUCH an ETB effect, SUCH a potential for tap/untap shenanigans (Josh's Emmara deck feels on the rise :P) and SUCH a way to cheat commander tax so it can do its game unlimitedly, has a lot more of combo to it than stax... That's why i usually refer to it as the devil's pet owl or something like that. It's actually THE one deck i'd hate the most to face on an EDH table.
This was a very funny episode, primarily because in my playgroup I play against Narset, Animar, superfriends Atraxa, and Scion. And what's funny about that list of combo decks is I think I scared our playgroup into that direction with my own Breya deck, which somehow didn't make this list. I get a lot of grief from opponents for Breya because artifact synergies are so strong in Magic.
I guess one archetype you didn't hit upon is Edgar Markov. The constant barrage of free 1/1s is absurd, and it allows them to play with lots of token synergies at no real cost. It can be hyper aggressive if left unchecked, and it feels hopeless seeing it in a 1v1 matchup.
You shouldn’t play Markov in a 1v1 anyway as he’s banned for duel commander (for that exact reason). If you’re playing with friends in a duel and they whip out old Eddy Boy just ask them to leave out his eminence ability. That makes the whole fight much more fair 😊
These guys never obviously had the baral player target just them in a multiplayer game before lol
Talk about Magic Fest without any mention of the artist boycott? Seems like the topic should have been touched on at least at some point. Maybe waiting for a better episode? That’s fair.
Could have happened after they recorded this episode
That's not really their place to comment on.
@Alex Schiff
True, I didn't consider that. The editing and overall quality of the video is awesome as always. Just would have been interesting to get their perspective.
@kris
Fair enough. I would have found their perspective interesting. The whole debate was really interesting to me. I can see that this is not the right video though, sorry if my original question seemed accusatory. Not my intention.
