Is Mairsil, the Pretender Worth Revisiting 5 Years Later?

  • Mairsil, the Pretender is hands down one of the most creative commander options ever designed. The unique ability to store activated abilities over the course of the game and gradually become stronger is still something we haven't really seen since it's release in 2017.

    My favorite commander. Once you have a cage counter on aetherling, Marsil is never dying. I’d also like to shout out the original sakishima, as since it doesn’t share Marsil’s name you can get around pithing needle effects.

    I love how strange mairsil builds are. There are a bunch of unconventional combinations that become outrageously powerful when put on the same body (and it can be tricky to interact with for your opponents)! I will say that this commander can be one of the most difficult to pilot IMO

    I love this deck, and I've played it a lot, so I think I know the ins and outs fairly well. Crypt rats also works excellently in this deck, 3b for 3 damage to each creature and player and there's so much to combo with an effect like that. Endling to give it deathtouch for a boardwipe, cabal initiative for lifelink (my main win con has been worldfire + flicker with aetherling + crypt rat effect + lifelink to survive). Last time I played I managed some 30 clones with pack rat and mirror box.

  • @patstevenswhohatesbuttermi5861

    By far one of my favorite decks, but I'm trying to go different directions with him. Every once in while a new worthwhile piece gets printed, but with such a good typical shell, it's hard to stray too much without making him strictly worse. I love the deck, but I'm also kind of bothered by "solved" decks. I'm thinking of just making him a glorified Grenzo Dungeon Master deck, with Canal Dredger or Junktroller, once Grenzo and one of those are caged, you have a Grenzo deck with permanent access to bottom of library manipulation. Could be fun with the protection/haste/untap shell.

  • @Antif4mous
    @Antif4mous Před rokem

    I love Mairsil, but I went for burn and sac theme. Couple of cloning effects like Molten Echoes, Spark Double and Jaxis from New Capenna. Endling and Bloodfire Colossus is kind of the win con, Basilisk Collar or Whip of Erebos for mad life gain with 6 damage to every creature and player and to negate self burn. Brash taunter and Stuffy Doll for extra damage. Also added void mirror and knowledge pool lock, since ideally I won't be casting any spells, just activating abilities which more often than not result in a board wipe. No Aetherling, Quicksilver Elemental or pack rat, since I get Mairsil triggers with every undying shenanigans that I pull off. Instant speed sacrifice am I right ❤️🌶️

    Built him out, can confirm it can casually hold down a table of 5 (if given the chance to cage 3, depending on what cards they are, its gg.) Sage of hours infinite is too easy in it. Blink with aetherling strategically. Nivs disk aether you get the point. Tree of perdition too, which is just rude, but fun to pull. I run mairsil when its everyone against me. Sorta like when theres built out dragons on the table, slivers, you know neck beard contenders. Bad merfolk angels etc. Its good against those, just be wary of straight damage hate, I generally try to glacial chasm and end it before then.
