    You could possibly run this as a sweet landfall/pillow fort deck. Play all the typical pillow fort cards (Propaganda, Ghostly Prison, Norns Annex) along with target removal to get you to the mid game relatively untouched and then start getting value from all the extra card draw and land drops with cards like Omnath Locus of Rage and Avenger of Zendikar.

    I think you guys missed the point of the deck and the perfect flavor behind it. The whole point of the duck's group hug nature is to win by being the last one standing. The partner commander's explamplify this perfectly. You aren't supposed to benefit off of them nessisarily. You're opponents gain advantage from hurting each other. You win from them attacking each other while playing the diplomat. Helping everyone out but giving advantage to others for hitting each other. You are weak to combos but you are so good with people getting greedy.
    Personally, I think this is one of the stronger 4 color commanders. I adore it and plan on retooling it to include more landfall and Niv-Mizzet style effects. In my play group, we played two games with the new commander's with me playing this deck, and I won both games.

    • @MTGEDH
      @MTGEDH Před 7 lety +1

      Austin Johnson Agreed! Group hug is just that. You basically give your opponents weapons to kill each other while you search out or draw out your win con. As a group hug player you really aren't trying to win.
      As for combo decks I did stick time stop in the deck to prevent people going off by allowing either myself or someone else a way to answer it.

    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither Před 7 lety +1

      Austin Johnson - Except out of the box this deck is hot garbage. As they said, even unmodified 5 way commander, this is the worst of them all. It goes in too many directions and doesn't do any of them well, nor does it have a way to end the game effectively when it comes down to a duel.
      I found that I needed to HEAVILY modify it to make it even close to playable.
      It needs more ramp and color fixong than it already has, and at 2cc like Josh said so we can play our commander and stuff on turn 3.
      Turn 2 ramp into turn 3 commander and land drop means untapping turn 4 with five mana before your main phase (land drop). It is really easy to use that turn to lay down additional defenses (as you already have a 2/8 wall in the way) and some card draw to make sure you can keep playing lands off your commander. Turn 5 you can start responding to threats and casting mana sinks - things which allow you to use your mana every turn without costing you cards from hand, such as Soul of Ravnica.
      I think this deck needs alternate win conditions, like "Approach of the Second Sun." Ways to just stall the game and win outside of combo or combat damage.

  • @Starfury117
    @Starfury117 Před 7 lety +5

    Just yesterday, my friends and I gathered together to play commander. He just bought the Stalwart Unity deck. I used the Deveri precon but I used roon, my other friend used prossh precon. The stalwart unity deck actually won both games because he didn't do anything impactful so we left him alone and we ate at each other.
    The winning cards for Stalwart Unity that we found were
    - Treacherous Terrain (After collective voyage and tempt with discovery, and I flashed back Diluvian Primordial because I got greedy, then he cast that spell and domed us both for 25 damage)
    - Reins of Power (After I flickered my Myr Battlesphere for like 6 times, I killed Prossh with direct damage because his board got too big, Stalwart Unity casts Reins and power and kills me with my own monsters)
    - Keening Stone (If ignored this kills pretty fast. Especially with all the lands Stalwart unity deck fetches out of our decks. With the limited removal options in preconstructed decks, couldn't stop that stone until it almost milled me out)
    Other win cons I think are in the deck are
    - Psychosis Crawler
    - Reverse the Sands
    I think the main win strategy of this deck is to get everyone to the late game with lots of cards/lands/creatures and then punish them for it.

Brago restoration angel kiki jiki venser as soon as i find one and a whole lot of great etb cards. Cool deck tech. I am building this deck myself. One of my win-cons is academy rector into Omniscience, cast enter the infinite, board wipe, drop elesh norn, platinum angel, and dovescape. Then you ditch a bunch of spells and make 3/3 birds to kill everyone with on your next turn. Few if any things can stop this board.

  • @thepineappleyempireofsuper9612

    the group hug decks I use usually build play diplomatically and have single target loss for opponents (think that 3B card that makes people lose if there health is at 13, but more consistent). the idea is to make your opponents to feel like they are better off not having you lose right away because you run effects that would cause them to lose tempo or ability to prepare for the other players (aka pillow forts) while helping them with consistency and synergy (like giving all creatures besides your creatures +2/+2, or all opponent spells cost 1-less) you want cards that hurt your opponents for hurting you, not cards that only hurt opponents. then, when there is only 2 players left (you included) drop your win conditions since your opponent likely used most of his/her anti-win condition cards until you win! these kind of decks usually work best against evenly matched opponents and even better when there's more people playing (also good if you are the only player with a 'group-hug' deck).

    Getting another land out every turn can fire up something like Meloku or the Visions uncommon lands.
    Also, embrace the grouphug and go full throttle: Well of Ideas, Consecrated Sphinx and Kydele.
    And cards like Tithe are turning into ramp mode, puting in something like Azusa or Burgeoning and you are one or 2 mana infront of the others.
    Have fun with a Boomerang on a stick targeting lands or get rid of them with a Sunder altogether.
    And how could I forget about Kismet and Stasis!?

    Perplexing Chimera+Homeward Path+Earthcraft
    1. Opponent casts sweet card.
    2. Perplexing Chimera swaps for said card
    3. Tap Homeward Path to get Perplexing Chimera back.
    4. Tap Perplexing Chimera To untap Homeward Path.
    Repeat as needed, with a Sword of the Paruns or Umbral Mantle you can essentially pay 3 mana to steal any spell your opponents wish to play, it is uncounterable and your commander ramps you anyway so you'll have the mana, plus if anyone tries to stop you short of a board wipe you just steal the spell and use it yourself, save some counter spells for the board wipes and you are now no longer playing your own deck but the best parts of all of your opponents decks, including their commanders.

    My friends and I each got one fo the decks and I was the one who got the Group Hug one :) After playing it, there are some flaws in it. Firstly it needed actual board wipes so i put in a wrath of god, fumigate, as well as Hallowed burial? (the one that sends everything to the bottom of the deck) Secondly, I added in a lot more enchantments because the deck was sorely lacking and I wanted to get the moast out of Sphere of Safty" So i added:
    1. Fallowed Footsteps (Combos well with Progenitor Mimic, Horizon CHimra, Chasm Skulker, and Elidion of Blossoms [another card I added])
    2. Burgeoning (Because for some reason it was not added in the main deck. Also added Horn of greed to combo well with Burgeoning)
    3.Collapsing borders. This is an interesting group hug card if youre playing more than 3 colors, but punishes decks that are 2 or 1 color.
    4. Rite of the Raging Storm. Put this in to give opponent play toys to hit eachother with (and they cant hit me) cuz why not
    5.Eyes of the Widesent. to make sure no blue shenenigans happen during my turns cause theres only so much hugging I can do ;)
    6. Fevered Vissions. added this for card punishment
    and lastly, as a win con, Helix pinicle. Im doing a TON of ramping so may as well put it to use.
    For extra help, I put in "Plea for Power" as well as "Exproreate" for extra turns (or draw power) and lets be honest, this gives opponents extra Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis" triggers so they weill be okay with it. and one of the last upgrades I did was add a few cards to punish opponents for having TOO many cards in hand ex (Viseling as well as Veverd Vissions)
    All of these additions were made from just what I had laying around in my collection so I spent nothing on upgrades xD So if anyone is wondering, i have no idea how much itll cost but I doubt anything here is expencive. SO yeah, heres my upgrades :)

    Some things I considered putting into this:
    Ink-treader Nephilim+Lab Maniac+Cantrips, mill yourself&win
    Treacherous Terrain+Turnabout+Armageddon+Splendid Reclamation
    Kruphix+Helix Pinnacle
    Enchanted Evening+Primeval Light
    Making your commander unblockable and putting sth like Strength of Cidars/Exoskeletal Armor on it to oneshot opponents with Commander damage.
    Things that work VERY well in grouphug or just 4-colour + in general:
    Grouphug: Cultural Exchange, the Advocates from Judgment, Shah of Naar Isle, Arboria, Archmage Ascension,Collective Restraint, Malignant Growth, the other cards from the "Oath"-cycle(the one Oath of Druids is part of,from Exodus), The Temples from Kamigawa-especially here where you get to play the best 4,Norn's Annex
    IN general: BLOOM TENDER(he might be pricey but its a 2cmc manadude that can/will tap for up to WUBRG.
    my personal fav. reset button: Worldpurge,Charms(this deck for example enables you to use 12 multi-colour charms-2shard-2wedges-6guilds&2dragon charms(from Planeshift)

    Simply add the following:
    -all the prison effects are already in the deck. I also like Archangel of Tithes, she is heavy on white but works both as another prison and as possible way to get your wincons through. Collective restraint is also a must, Pay 4 for each attacker? on top of your other prison effects? Your opponents will have a really hard time.
    -some tutor's (mystical tutor, enlightened and idyllic).
    -Two extra counterspells (Forbid works really well with all the extra cards, and counterflux)
    -Monarch cards combine well with K&T's card draw effect, plus because of your pillowfort people are unlikely and/or unable to attack you. Keeper of Keys and Skyline Depot work great, Skyline is a possible wincon.
    -Luminarch Ascension as a wincon, build your fort and then wait one or two rounds and you'll be making 4/4 flying angels like it's nobody's business.
    -Fumiko, they have to attack, but can't afford to attack you. Now what?
    -Consecrated sphinx makes K&T disgusting "I draw one card, play one land, oh it is late game and you all don't have any lands left on hand? I'll draw 4-6 or more" Don't forget the draw is a must, either play a land or you are forced to draw.
    -Add some Landfall guys. Tireless tracker can get pretty big and Omnath Locus of Rage works great.
    Basically add some of the more defensive token makers (Omnath, Skyline Despot and Luminarch Ascension) And you'll be having no problems. The deck is great.

    I have modified a K&T Deck. I like to use Forced Fruition + Rule of Law to lock down my opponents. To make sure Rule of Law doesn't hurt me, I also run Venser, the Sojourner to blink it out on my turn. Venser, the Sojourner + Conjured Currency is somewhat similar to the Perplexing Chimera strategy.
    I also run Consecrated Sphinx because it is perfect for this deck. To ensure that I don't lose by running out of cards, I also run Laboratory Maniac for a win con. Another win con is Helix Pinnacle. If neither of those work, then I try to take what they have and use that as a win con either by Conjured Currency or Progenitor Mimic.
    A slow but great enchantment for the deck is Archmage Ascension. With K&T on the board, you will get that counter at end of turn, and with Consecrated Sphinx you can get counters on it at the end of your opponents turn! Once it's at 6, you can then tutor for anything in your deck.

    I did win with this deck out of the deck, but it was entirely with Keening Stone after so many mass card draw spells. I'm with you that the deck doesn't really have a built-in win strategy. I feel like capitalizing on forced card draw will help them out, so wheel effects, some mill cards, and then cards like Shattered Angel and Invader Parasite might help the deck out. Still trying to figure it out.

    I agree that ghostly prison and propaganda have their weaknesses against strong creatures. However, in the later game, after cards like Hydra and Ishai (as long as it isn't a general) have been dealt with, combining ghostly prison, propaganda, windborn muse, and sphere of safety make it very expensive for an opponent to attack you.

    In my experience, adding something as crazy as Jin-Gitaxias can be a bad idea, as it makes people think the deck is Jin-Gitaxias deck more than group hug and hate you out early in the following games.
    Also, I am surprised you did not mention Assault Formation, as that card can give some gotcha moments with how big your commander is, especially with Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa in the deck.

    Hilarious thing we learned about Ludevic: he works when somebody cracks a fetch. Players can work around that by just cracking them in end steps after he'd trigger, but it's the easiest deal in the world to make. The common excuse with him on the board is "I'm only attacking to draw a card". Offer to crack a fetch when somebody goes to do that and you can save yourself a decent bit of life-- or you can make somebody commit to being your enemy and now you know where to point threats. Or just use it politically to help the guy who can't swing but may be useful down the line. Or be the guy who can't/doesn't want to swing and ping yourself with your fetch (or shock, here) for the free card draw. Ludevic is hilarious.
    I do think Kraum might be better; I really want to try him and Vial-Smasher at the head of a Grixis control list. There are some decks he's not great against but "draw, play seven drop, go" is akin to "deck that you beat with a counterspell and get a free ping at somebody with Vial-Smasher in the process".

    I never really play group hug too much, but the way I read this commander, yes you let everyone else play lands or draw cards, but you are doing both, drawing lots of cards and ramping every turn, along with the standard ramp you have built into the deck....you build your deck knowing you are going to have lots of mana.....why not get some huge devastating eldrazi and other behemoth creatures that you can cast quite easily! along with enchantments like lurking predators oath of druids and maybe creature like elvish piper (although quite the target, and is easily killed, but still a good way to cheat some out), you can get stack the deck with a lot of scary threats. It seems like that could be a fun way to build this deck that isn't group huggy.

  • @matthew2992
    @matthew2992 Před 7 lety

    Hey guys. Quick question. As Kynaios and Tiro reads, "Each player may put a land card from his or her hand onto the battlefield, then each opponent who didn't draws a card." You guys said towards the beginning of the video that the person who controls the card can potentially draw two cards out of this. I read it as the player can draw a card and then play a land or not, since the last part reads each opponent. I am just a little confused on the ruling as it has come up in our home games once or twice already. I would love some clarification. Great video by the way!

    • @jox4554
      @jox4554 Před 7 lety

      In fact, they meant that K&T make you draw at the end of your turn. So, you draw in your draw step + end step thanks to K&T = 2 cards per turn.
      After this, every one can put a land into play. So, it's not PLAYING a land but put it into play. So, 2 lands for you per turn (if lucky). Then, each oponent who choose to NOT put a land into play, MUST draw a card.

    • @joshleekwai8895
      @joshleekwai8895 Před 7 lety +1

      I don't think this is what I said? If so it was an accident. I probably meant that when Kynaios and Tiro are out you are drawing two cards per turn counting your normal draw step.

    I think you misunderstood the way group hug is played. In looking at very narrow parameters for what makes a deck in that it needs to win. the player giving others advantage like crazy might be in a different mindset. I always sat group hug players as people who like to set conditions into a game to make it crazy. Hive mind, scrambleverse, knowlage pool. I think saying that the deck was the least effektive is disenginues because your mindset was that it needed to win for the player to achive success.

    Evolutionary escalation is politics 101: the card. That and you can do silly things with the counters
    35:14 75% means being able to go between 100% and 50% at will. A deck that can scale up or down without needing to alter the contents.

    • @EVO1148
      @EVO1148 Před 7 lety

      WilhelmScreamer I think evolutionary escalation is great because importantly you get to choose which card to put the +3/+3 on. Maybe it's a card you know they want to sacrifice anyway, maybe it's a card that's too weak to do anything even with the boost while you get the pay off. You can even give the counters to the player who's clearly going to lose in two turns time etc. I would hardly call it one of the duds in the deck

Comments like "but it doesn't help me enough", "not enough board wipes" or suggestions like, elsh norn mass land destruction seem far off base. The end of the day is, the deck is group hug. Saying that the deck is weak and having to resort to politics as the win condition isn't the way to look at it. The real idea is, how do I get more political? How do I win with politics? Do I even want to win in the first place, or have fun? Tempting offers, offerings, mana flare, and windfall effects. These are the suggestions I want to see.

    Edit: Possibility storm and Kraum. He can work as part of the 99 when you are playing a deck that forces people to cast two or more spells or none at all. He can be the draw engine until you draw the second half of your prison. Preventing you opponent from casting spells.

      I can't say that I've ever had a 'bad' experience with people who want inclusion. A character being transgendered or homosexual in the lore doesn't affect the game at all, and Kynaios and Tiro only show this through their slightly affectionate art, done very well I might add.
      Inclusion is important because people like that don't have many characters to rally behind. Kynaios and Tiro are a great example of inclusion done well, and alluded to in their playstyle.
