This is so game changing for the industry. As a concept artist who works with z brush and maya it takes hours and hours to re typoligize a model to game resolution. To be able to take a high res model and throw it right into the game is absolutely insane ! And will save artists thousands and thousands of hours of work.

I’m kind of confused as to where unreal’s auto LOD mesh generation will go. In UE4 your model would basically have its own auto generated LODs, i wonder if with nanite this becomes obsolete.
Same, sometimes I'll try and use the blender Decimate modifier to be lazy but it causes so many texturing problems. Plus it crashes blender if the poly count is above 100k.
Jacob Bradshaw right ! I don’t know a lot about blender, but z remesher, and the decimation master in z brush is such a pain to deal with. Especially because you lose your uv’s when you decimate. That’s why most go to maya to retop, so their geometry is clean ! I’m not sure how this is going to work for animations, I’m assuming playable characters will still be hand crafted, and re topped so there is no weird stretching with animations. but for environments it’s incredible.

As a 3D artist, this made me emotional.
Retopologizing, preparing normal maps and most of all light baking is the most tiresome and boring part of making game assets or making the game itself. This allows the artist to concentrate on the art and not the technical parts.

I hate lightmaps. Though i'm not sure how this lumens can replace baked lightmaps in terms of framerate. Same with nanite replacing normal maps.

Same here. But I think this Nanite tech is not applied to the character? probaby because she's animated. Also, an obj of 3mill polys is probably around 100 mb so I wonder how many GBs could that demo be in total

I'm a game design student, this is an email in response to the UE5 reveal from my 3D Modelling professor.
"Yeah, I saw it. I wouldn't have missed it. I've been an unreal developer for almost 20 years.
Huge doesn't begin to describe the impact this will have on the gaming world. The first thing worth discussing is that they kept referring to this as a PlayStation 5 demo. Since ps5 and series x are so close in specs, it's should be noted that this will be possible on both consoles. It will not, however, be possible on the switch. I'm really curious what this will do to Nintendo's sales.
As for pipeline, this is a major rest. I've experienced this kind of overhaul once before. It was with the launch of the 360 and the PS3 and when normal mapping became the standard. Artists then had to introduce high poly into their workflow. It looks like now, we will have to remove low poly from our workflow. I feel for many of my students who were just taught how the art pipeline works, only to have it get completely redefined.
With ue4, unity was a solid competitor. With ue5, my pros and cons list is skewed greatly in unreal's favor.
Another thing not mentioned, was that they altered their deal with developers using the engine in favor of giving developers more of the share of profits from their games.
This also has a major impact on those who teach game art, like me. Since I need to stay cutting edge to remain useful, teaching at schools that don't switch over to ue5 will limit me. If I can't tech how the current games are made, I've no place teaching."

The audio stuff is legitimately revolutionary for certain situations. The extra-realistic spacial awareness would finally put any future stealth games on par with the OG Thief and Splinter-Cell games. VR will be even more convincing. Competitive games requiring twitch accuracy will feel the upgrade too. God, horror games will be next-level with this stuff. The only things I can think of that could compare in actual impact on the player experience would be standardized gyro aim or total physics-based destructibility. The former could be done at any time if Microsoft cared to do it and the latter is already being worked on in Unreal 4, so we might be on the verge of an actually significant leap forward for the upcoming generation.
The game be like: "Uncharted Zero Dawn: Lara Croft's Final Fantasy" (I would totally buy it).

That's already being developed ;) Not on a perfectly detailed level (yet), but my bachelor's thesis in computer science will be a very rough demonstration of how it can be done. It, of course, involves AI.

I want an open world Avatar game SO bad. I would prefer an RPG where they like, give you the next avatar after Korra, but I definitely wouldn't mind them just doing the series. It'd be such a hard game to make really well: being able to manipulate ANY Earth/Water is really hard. Air and Fire are easier, but the other two require destructible environments and being able to totally manipulate the topography of the area. Anything less would be disappointing and feel like Lego: Avatar (which I would also play tbh) with only very specific things being able to be affected.

There’s no way Bethesda would scrap their own engine in favour of paying another company to do it for them, it would likely reduce the quality of the games they produce. It’s a huge advantage that they do have their own engine as it means if they want, they can make changes to it to suit themselves 😜

I can’t stand HUDs. They’re immersion breaking and lazily forced on you. Games need to be built using the environment, props, and characters to do everything a hud does naturally

I'm more concerned about the implications of the depth that video games will have to offer in terms of interactivity. Hyper realistic graphics aren't necessary for immersion in story (thinking of the "what program did you use?" story from Pixar). What will these new developer tools allow the devs to offer us to do instead of just see?

My girlfriend and I were talking about loading screens, and how annoying they can be, and remember saying "If game developers are going to focus on games with no loading screens, and true to life aesthetics, they are going to have to tear down every method they have been depending on for years, and build new ones from the ground up to match the growth of technology."

Bethesda has been a crappy developer for a long time.
This is gorgeous. The funny thing is I spend most my time playing outdated games, including those from the 90's, and I really don't care that much about the graphics. Yet I think it's amazing what they've accomplished here and I can't wait to be dazzled by what people do with it. The model of making the engine free until you make a significant revenue is a great idea. We should empower as many studios as possible to make something amazing, and it just might create a hit.

Wow. For the tech heads out there what were seeing is the PS5’s ability to throw huge amounts of data around very, very fast. Faster then any games machine ever has. Series X will be able to hit higher resolutions but PS5 will be able to push more detail. To quote the creator of the Unreal engine.
“PS5 has an immense amount of GPU power, but also a multi-order bandwidth increase in storage management. The storage architecture on the PS5 is far ahead of anything you can buy on anything on PC for any amount of money right now. It’s going to help drive future PCs.”

Nope, that devs where mostly from sony studios, don't believe those statments. There are a lot more devs from third party studios which talk about the series X power and honestly this is more believable than a partial and payed opinion because in the end teraflops are a measurement of real power. Just imagine this demo with higher reaolution or higher fps and ray traycing, this is what series X will provide.

That’s not quite how it works. What the GPU can do depends on what the other sectors of the system architecture can do and how fast they can do it. But it’s a moot point. You can’t go wrong with either machine. The end results will be stellar in both cases.

Divinity Mode ps5 cannot hit more detail yes it can send that data to the gpu which after its made is stored in the ram (xsx ram faster)
When they need the assets it’s then sent back to be shown on the screen I think that’s how it works the ps5 can send it to the gpu faster but the xsx is just so much more powerful it’ll make the frame faster and the ram will be able to deliver the frame faster this is also why you’ll be able to see higher texture quality on the xsx it’s also is why you’ll be able to see higher fps on xsx
The ps5 can send stuff to the gpu faster resulting in better load times but once your in the game the difference between the xsx and ps5 ssd won’t be noticeable you’ll still have instant fast travel on the xsx

@@kernoleary1394 Exactly this. Even if the Unreal Engine 5 has the capacity to pre-load entire chunks of a game, the current hardware technology we have now doesn't allow for that.
Let's say we're talking about Far Cry 5. There isn't a single piece of commercially available tech out there right now that can instantly load and render the whole of Far Cry 5's game world to the point where loading time is eliminated.
You know the graphics will be unbelievable, when this is looks beautifully unreal in 480p‼️
