Africa’s $6BN City of the Future

  • Nigeria is constructing a $6 billion dollar city in the Atlantic ocean, called Eko Atlantic. Lagos, the financial and economic capital of Nigeria, is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. To grow successfully, Lagos must attract investors. However, currently, the city is very undeveloped and is threatened by rising sea levels. To help with this, Nigerian developers are building a $6 Billion dollar city on reclaimed land off the coast of Lagos, called Eko Atlantic. Eko Atlantic will host many districts with marinas, skyscrapers, and the largest mall in West Africa. Since construction started in 2007, the city has advanced significantly. In the coming years, it will rise from the sea, potentially becoming a global economic hub.

Regardless, the fact that Nigeria's poverty rate has been cut dramatically and it is one of the growing economic tigers, I hope Nigeria will see a strong middle class post-Eko than a wealth gap. Next India??!!! Can you tell me what all India has achieved in past few decades? Go check the projects that are being constructed in Abuja and Lagos. With a population of 1.4 billion people we should be having a GDP of more than 10-15 trillion USD at present. We do not have proper research and development in India, we don't have patents in high end technologies, manufacturing sector is more or less dead and the infrastructure is poor/sub-standard. Even Metropolitan Cities in India look shabby and ugly. There are not enough bridges, our infrastructure is ageing and the roads are not sufficient to handle the present traffic. On the other hand, poor fishing villages in China like Shanghai are now having GDP way more than entire state of Uttar Pradesh.

    • @sanchitkumar6945
      @sanchitkumar6945 Před 3 lety +4

      Most of the Chinese Cities were inhabitated by poor fisherman in the past. If you want to see what development looks like then go check theirs. They were having a growth rate of 12-15% from 1992-2008. They have pushed a large section of their population out of poverty and are still able to maintain 7% growth in today's date. From having GDP less than India to 5-6 times at present, they have striked a great balance between research, infrastructure, manufacturing and technology.

    Funfact, Eko was the name of Lagos under the Benin Empire under Oba Ado, when it served as an important trading hub, and under Oba Akitoye the slave trade was attempted to be abolished, however local merchants refused it and send the King (Oba) into exile to Britain, where he convinced the British authorities to overthrow the pro-slavery monarchy under Akitoye's brother.
    Once the British, along supporters loyal to Akitoye overthrew his brother, and reinstalled the monarchy - they annexed Eko 10 years later into a new British colony, and the realm of the Oba went back to the Benin homelands, were to this day Edo (Benin) remains a federal state within Nigeria.
    The British Colony in Eko, named the city after the Portuguese who named it "Lagos" due to the many lagoons and lakes and also because another important coastal trade hub was also called "Lagos" in Portugal already.

The UAE & Singapore are ideal examples of what we can become because 30 years ago they were nothing but dry deserts & muddy swamps respectively, they didn't get to where they are today by mediocre thinking or blind allegiance to political parties, but by unity, ambition & innovation. Northern Nigeria can be better that the UAE, Southern Nigeria can be better than Singapore, all we have to is shove mediocrity aside!

      I agree with you. I have been very critical of the state of things in Nigeria myself many times. BUT, there are people that can NEVER see anything good in anything that is happening in Nigeria. When something good happens, at least let's commend the thing, and say, yes it's good, but we need more of this, or we need the next one done better. Nothing wrong in setting the bar high....it's a good thing. But some Nigerians want Nigeria to just leap forward, and turn into a country like European and Asian countries overnight. It's not going to happen. Let's walk first, and then we can talk of running.
      The railway project that is under construction in Nigeria is a prime example. Here comes the Debbie-Downer Nigerians: "Terrible, outdated trains. Go to Asia, go to Europe, go to Dubai, nobody uses these types of trains any longer'.....yadi-yadi-yada!
      Nigeria of the 60s, 70s, 80s is not the Nigeria we have today. There have been some regressions, true, but a lot have progressed.
      If you don't understand, I can't make you see my point, so I will just stop here. It has been a long week.

    Sorry to see this project so far advanced in the same style as Dubai. People feel alienated living in high rise complexes where you never interact with your neighbours. Nigerians are too gregarious to be happy in a place like that.
    In Dubai, people rarely congregate in the new public spaces.
    Let's hope phase II can be patterned more after downtown Paris instead: sidewalk cafes, outdoor markets, and much more greenery than this first phase.

How many people can the new development accommodate? How much will be used for the development of the place? These are but a few questions I am thinking as I write this. Moreover, can this same investment be used to build affordable housing for the people in "Makoko" and create jobs? a big YES, YES, YES. The project is set to benefit just a few and ignore many. Inequality in standard of living is already bad in Lagos as it is when compared to other less prosperous states in Nigeria.
    I think Lagos needs to embark on initiatives that actually enhances quality of life across the entire urban area rather than simply fortifying Victoria Island from floods and creating a new abode for the society's elites while 90% plus of the urban area stays as is or improves marginally in the coming years.
