How to Terraform Mars
Vložit
- čas přidán 21. 02. 2021
- Mars can be terraformed into an Earth-like paradise. By reestablishing a magnetic field to protect Mars, thickening the atmosphere, removing perchlorates from the soil, creating an ozone layer, and adjusting the atmosphere, we can terraform the red planet into a habitable paradise. A terraformed Mars would still be very different from Earth. The days and years would be longer, the gravity would be lower, and the climate would be much different. While terraforming Mars is possible, it would likely take hundreds or even thousands of years and would require technology and megaprojects beyond humanity’s current capabilities.

I’m glad that you mentioned the 1,000,000+ year timeline for a breathable atmosphere to be established on Mars. That is often not understood in discussions on CZcams. I’ve looked at a NASA article about getting enough greenhouse gases on Mars using a large number of factories which would put those gases into the atmosphere. Such a program could raise the air pressure and temperature on Mars to acceptable levels for humans but it would take probably over a 1000 years. And even then, as you said, the atmosphere would not be breathable. There are no quick fixes to turn Mars into another earth.
Titan is the best option!
I think the development of robotic biological hybrids that don't require breathable gases or food will happen much sooner than the terraforming of Mars.

That last statement is what kinda grinds my gears "However right now we should just focus on protecting Earth."
The problem with that is that we have 7 billion people on Earth. We have PLENTY of people to spare who want to focus on terraforming and colonizing Mars and if they want to, they should be allowed to rather than be forced for protect Earth, especially since their efforts would as a byproduct likely do more to protect Earth than the rest of the planet's population focusing on Earth combined. If you're Earthbound, and you're shooting for the stars, and you only get to the Moon, you're still far better off than you were to begin with. That same philosophy applies to protecting Earth. Let's go to Mars, let's learn how to Terraform it, because that knowledge can be applied to protecting Earth too and it'll be easier and cheaper to do on Earth.
And the materials to do all this? 'We'll build a nuclear power station' with what? How many rockets is it going to take to move a fraction of all that building and manufacturing materials to mars? Or is everything to be made of glass, as there's a lot of sand? Just the rocket fuel burned off getting all those materials off Earth would cause our immediate demise. How is anyone better off by getting to the moon'? Ever walked in a forest? That's a million times better than a walk on moon dust, and it's free. Another who needs to grow up.

@@petersimmons3654 wow dude, i have never seen this much ignorance in a comment.
This is the best HOW TO video on terraforming mars I have seen ... ever. I would add that you want water ice asteroids, not ammonia based bodies, though nitrogen is needed too but the hydrogen is not. Crash a series of very large asteroid from the belt into the dark side of mars using nuclear engines that run on the asteroids own water resources and you can nudge one out of its normal orbit and use it to hit mars repeatably over the next 25 years or so. Not large enough to destroy mars just nudge it closer to the sun, give it more gravity, more atmospheric pressure, water vapor and water resources to make oxygen and gain more sunlight heat to help the process.
There is a danger of moving Mars closer to earth, however and that has to do with its affect on earths orbit. Do this one major thing and the rest will fall into place.
Make O'neill cylinders to house prospective colonists in orbiting ships with giant electromagnet coils wrapped around them to ward off solar ionizing radiation and wind. I also like the lagrange point magnet as well and that might be another good location for an O'neill Cylinder. The O'neill Cylinder might be a mile long and a thousand feet in diameter or perhaps only 500 by 2,000 feet, but a nuclear powerplant on it could generate a very strong field. This would also provide livable space for future farmers and ranchers
In order to deal with this "No tides" problem, we could simply drag a dwarf planet from the Kuiper asteroid belt to the orbit of Mars to serve as a 3rd moon. In the future, that might be possible.
Also, we could bombard a couple sides with icy comets, this would create ponds, lakes, and possibly entire seas, to deal with the weather patterns.
we could also make robots that make other robots. Huge whale robots, the size of skyscrapers. whos job is to just swim aimlessly and cause motion in the ocean. Since they are building eachother, no reason they couldn't occupy the whole martian ocean at some point.
each whale has like 4 long arms that it uses to build others, when it's time, they could even all swim in a pattern to make oceanic currents
A larger moon would be the most important step the tidal forces would jump start mars magnetosphere protecting the new atmosphere from being blown away by the solar winds.
Building a planet of A.I could be a disaster! Emotionless automatons running a world? Nope! Pushing an asteroid would be an amazing feat, too.Diverting some comets or small asteroids might work, though?
@@gallen1234 Oh i never meant for them to have AI, just brainless whale bots, dumb as a bird. Building eachother will just be pre-programmed, like a bird builds a nest :)

They could just blow Phobos up and use the contents of that moon to benefit Mars somehow? Increase the greenhouse effect to heat Mars maybe?
@@gallen1234 true we should consider about moving to proxima sentary
It would make sense to terraform Mars as a long term solution, while also applying short term solutions (e.g. some type of physical infrastructure that internally provides the conditions and supplies required for humans to live life, and pursue their work). If we can do it for space stations, I'm sure there's a way to do it on Mars too.
In line with what Elon said at some point, it could be a useful way to reduce the likelyhood of a global event on earth ending all human life. Naturally though, with politics there's always the fun chance of a space race too😊.
Of course the pursuit of any work on Mars, shouldn't be done in a way to hinder anything that needs to be done on earth.

I'm curious if green plants would even make sense for mars, given that mars only receives about 40%-45% the sunlight that Earth receives. I wonder if it would be more efficient and viable to introduce plants that are either naturally or genetically modified to be darker to absorb more light. Great video. Very informative, looks like based on scientific knowledge. 👍
Mars already has an atmosphere that's about 95% CO2, compared to 0.04% on Earth. When I took an astronomy course in college, we learned that Mars is very cold because the atmospheric pressure is much less than that of Earth. Low atmospheric pressure translates into low temperature, high pressure translates into high temperature, as per the Gas Laws. Seems to me that we if rigged up a magnetic field for Mars, the protection would theoretically allow the Mars atmosphere to thicken up again (perhaps with some terraforming help from us) and therefore to warm up again.
This dude at 4:49 cracks me up for some reason
Can’t wait to hear from the future flat Mars-ers! Haha
Much of this is described in Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red Mars," "Green Mars," and "Blue Mars."
In the meantime, imagine a colony on Mars or any other celestial body, enclosed in an extensive life-support system. Kind of like a city-sized indoor shopping mall.
The thought of other planet being a livable place is just outstanding.
In order to maintain a magnetosphere, you would have to collide both its moons into each other, and then start crashing asteroids into the newly formed moon until you achieve enough gravity on that moon that you would create enough tidal forces to restart its dynamo.
What do you mean?
We will colonize MARS and eventually terraform MARS.
Ping with Mars will be about 20-40 mins. So, no live zoom meetings or phone calls. Only texting and voice recording. Its like communication between Manhattan and Brooklyn before telegraph era.
I think I just learned more in this video than I did in school in the last 5 years
The colonization of Mars should be integrated as an essential public policy of each nation-state across the globe. I would suggest that countries located within the equatorial zone like the Philippines (my country) should serve as spaceports for Mars and their citizens should become pioneer settlers on the planet Mars.
probably near Guiuan
Fixing earth is easier than fixing mars
@@thetaomega7816 you could do both there are enough of us and we have enough will. we shouldn't limit ourselves there are 7.6 billion people on earth 7.4 billion can focus on earth and .2 can part focus on mars. especially if we invent something to terraform mars it could help us save our homeworld from disaster
@Account99 yeah, it would be impractical to build a launch site there when India, china, japan, all have launch sites. but the Philippines has a lot of resources I could easily see that in a future where space travel is very lucrative that they could make a launch site
It’s clearly going to happen one day, but first we have to improve our technology and crafts to be able to go back and forth with more ease!
And deal with Phobos. It eventually will crash into Mars, so we either find a way to stop that, or we wait until after that happens (which is the much longer choice).

So get to birds with one stone. Get all of the factories on earth that create a lot of co2 an put them on mars that should help us clean up a bit here on earth an help boost a atmosphere on mars.
in other words you want products that are intented to be used on earth, to be produced on mars, which then have to be shipped over back to earth. I don't think any company would survive that shipment costs...even if they really wanted to. But let's be real, no company would put up with that voluntarily.
also....the biggest junk of co2 emmision on earth comes from burning up fossil fuel like coal and oil. Nothing of that will be on mars. Another big co2 producer is traveling and transportation on earth...again nothing you can switch over to mars
@@Supirior18 . Yes true what I'm getting at is to help build a decent atmosphere on mars one way is to burn a lot of stuff to create a heap of co2 to speed up the greenhouse effect. And if we become a space faring race we will be going past mars . Earth as the central planet mars as the manufacturer of supplies to other colonies.
Can you do a terraforming Venus video?
that would be hard, you would need cloud lifters, maybe some kind of graphene straw that uses orbital speeds to suck up air and store it or fling it into space
@@gorrium5027 would it be significantly harder than Mars? Venus would be the bigger reward since it’s similar size to earth.
@@horatiohuskisson5471 no it would be harder because you won't be able to land until 98% of the atmosphere is gone, venus's atmosphere is over 1000x that of ours, and cloud colonies would be purely scientific unlike mars which could have industry

It is so annoying to watch videos ignoring that fact and building up some fantasy story, like it same as using greenhouse on Earth.
in hundreds of years of terraforming we could send people to other planets that dont need it
Within these time scales it's far more likely we'll be living a virtual existence, that said if we do achieve symbiotic AI supremacy it's also possible we'll hit an exponential technological growth curve to enable teraforming in the 100's of years scale.
Exactly!
kurzgesagt did a video on this with promoting the idea of using lasers to essentially speedrun the terraforming of Mars, which if their correct, then that's very good news as Mars using lasers along with all the other aforementioned methods would speed up the process into decades or a hundred years which as one would imagine, is infinitely better than waiting around for hundreds, to thousands to millions of years for Mars to do the terraforming bit.
Why does everything amazing related to space happens in the next couple centuries, UGH!
Focus on protecting earth? - We won't get to 100 or 1000 years of terraforming if we don't start somewhere.

We could make basins for the oceans and rivers.
I like the LaGrange-Point magnetic deflector and that will help with Solar ions but there are also cosmic ray ions coming from all directions that will evade the deflector. However, we can construct a large Moon for Mars that orbits above stationary orbit with Space Elevators. A large Martian Moon will create tidal effects that will stir the pot of the remnant molten core of Mars and create a mag-field that surrounds the planet, helping shield against high-energy ions from all directions. Space Elevators on Mars are a do-able idea because the lower gravity of Mars means that Martian Space Elevators can be constructed without exotic materials. Space Elevators will facilitate transport of stuff up above stationary orbit as well as transport of stuff from stationary orbit down to the surface - humans and large construction equipment, etc. Equatorial deep-holes can be mined on Mars and the material cheaply lifted above stationary orbit with the Space Elevators, as well as pulverized nickel-iron asteroids relocated from the asteroid belt brought down to fill the same equatorial deep-holes. Instead of destructively slamming asteroids onto the surface, bring them into orbit, pulverize them and gently bring the material down to the surface with Space Elevators. The Space Elevators are a key technology and Mars is the perfect place to develop them.
Millions of years?? Humanity has only been around for less than one Milly.
Yeah thats what Im saying. But you know its a “science theory” so it must true...
we should create artificial intelligence androids to do the mining terraforming for us in Mars. i mean, what could go wrong, right ? 🤔

As long as their minds are only simple enough to carry out instructions like: mine, then they will probably pose no threat. There could also be off switches in their brain that they fundamentally have no control of, and humans can trigger any time.
