@ralphsmallblock4367 I know I love it lol. Honestly I love Mustangs too, but for practical performance car that's actually reliable, the GR Carolla is probably leader of the pack. The Stang is a totally different segment but still awesome, especially that Dark Horse 2024 model, sexy af
I will give credit to the GR. It's a tiny engine with an impressive performance
In terms of overall handling, performance and usability as a daily driver. The GR blows them away. The storage of a hatchback. Just as good if not better track handling capabilities. Plus awd & can could be converted into a rally cross to blow them away on rough country roads & snow. Along with eco mode for better mpgs...The engine could also still handle more boost to make 350- 400hp & still be reliable.

The Corolla is impressive because with less than half the number of cylinders, smaller, and consuming less than half the fuel, it achieves the same or more performance. It's impressive, not everything is muscle, you have to be efficient.

Yep I have a GT just like that and this video just made me appreciate the GR and C5
It’s a Corvette man, against a Mustang and lowly Corolla, that it’s 25 years old is trivial.

Yeah those 400 kilograms more on the Mustang is going to hurt its cornering. But since its made for the American market that doesn't really matter, its mostly straight roads.
I don't know where these guys got the 3900 pound number for this mustang. The auto s197 gt weight around 3600 so it's only about 300 or so pounds heavier than the Corolla. Or about 136 kg more. I don't think that's enough to make a huge difference in the corners.
they are 20 year old muscle cars to be fair. How much are these grs running for? Cant be far off a 5.0
@genghisfimpley3516 2011-2014 GT's can be had for any where from 15k to 20k depending on the area
What disturbs me is that a Corolla weighs 3300 pounds. The 63 Chevy SS 327-300 automatic I owned as a young man weighed 3400 pounds as an all steel, full sized, body on frame automobile. Cruising a 60 mph on I-40 between Greensboro and Raleigh it would give 23 mpg and run 110 all day long. FT!
Honestly, not surprised about the results. That being said, the C5 is just beautiful, especially with those pop-up headlights. The 5th gen Mustang is retro done right and blew everyone's minds when it came out. The GR might be many things, but not a looker.

The Corolla is very impressive given the small displacement. Just one correction, however, a Corvette is not a "muscle car", it is a sports car.
I love these old vettes. I remember seeing the first LS vette at a dealer in STL w my Dad in 1996. Was shocked to see the brochure stating a 4-something, 0-60, and a advertised. 1/4 at 13.2. A year later, I went to the mailbox and grabbed my CnD magazine in late 97, to read that they tested the 98 LS1 TA 4a, and it ran a 13.2 at 108. Check the archives. That was rather generous though. I've never driven that gen corvette, but I use to smoke them on the reg, in my old TFS, e-cam, bot on na Fox, though. Can't tell you how many t5 3rd gear inout shafts I blew through. During the rev, at the 3:50 race, it has sunk in, how heavy those flywheels must have been. All cars use to be that way though. veroooooooooooom opposed to vroom vroom. Would like to own a affordable, clean, 100k mile LS1 vette in the future, and nows the time, as clean examples are still cheap, but are increasing in price atm w no signs of slowing down. Considering how old the Vette is, and how new the Corolla is, that's damn impressive for the Vette. The GR isn't a drag car so I wont shit on it too much, but that Vette is OP for it's age
And being a mile above sea level, that Corvette has 18 percent less power. The Toyota being turbo is hardly affected by altitude. If this test was at the coast, I think the Vette would have pulled it off. I live a mile high in Africa, and believe me, go to the coast with a naturally aspirated car and you can feel the gain.
Lmao really can’t shit on it, most owned old vettes are automatic which is a loss within itself🤣

I would LOVE to see the GR Corolla race the 4.6 S197 GT from 2005-2010.
I have an ‘06 S197 GT, 5 speed. Also have a ‘10 STi. Both have a mild tune but that’s it. Figure 320hp (crank) or so, and similar torque. The cars aren’t too far apart in weight.
The Mustang will just spin the tires off the line with any aggressive throttle input. Once it hooks up, it takes off but then loses steam in the higher rpms.
The STi is tough to launch, unless you don’t care about breaking stuff. Being the owner of the car, I care, as does my wallet. So most of my “launches” have been soft basically slip the clutch at 2500rpm and then roll in to full throttle by 3500rpm. Once that car gets to 4000rpm, it jumps straight to the redline. Very exciting at the upper rpms.
The STi feels faster in most driving situations, but the S197’s low rpm torque is a lot of fun - and it’s still pulling at upper rpms, but you don’t get that rush of turbo boost. Very linear V8, which can make it feel slower but probably is very similar.
Will say that with the AC on, the Mustang doesn’t seem to even notice, whereas in the STi I have to change my shift points and the rpms drop faster between shifts. 😅

I'm surprised at the 1/4 mile times. Last year while I vacationed in Denver, I took my '18 v6 Camaro(335 hp and about 3400 lbs) to Bandimere and went a 15:07 @ 95 mph
Not bad really. The corolla times seem quite slow honestly. For a "performance" car at $50,000...
Firebirds 25 years ago were running stock 13s
@@kychristell1779 Not @ a mile above sea level though.
@@kychristell1779 A hot Hatch and a performance car are 2 things. How many 1.6L motors are considered a performance motor? Motive Video in Australia tuned the Yaris with the same motor to 500hp unopened.
Because you can actually drive haha. Plus you have a waaaay better looking car.
That poor corvette is about clapped out!😂
that old ass corvette held its own tho
New tires would help a lot.
There was some testing done on the Nürburgring due to the Civic Type R's amazing time, whereas older models could gain A LOT of time with the same tire setup.
Sound test, 7:53 that corvette Roar was 🔥
Turbos wear out engines quick. Like to see how it holds up over time
VERY VALID POINT. I am not crazy about turbo gasoline engines for this reason. Diesel must be turbo on the other hand.
They've lasted fine for years in the yaris just fine. It's a toyota. They've been doing turbo engines reliably for over 40 years. It will be fine
Toyota engineers VERY well vehicles however that's a lot of boost so time will tell.
Amazing how much light weight and all new breaks can shorten the break length.
Great video guys, can’t wait to see what else you come up with.
Have a wonderful 4th of July everyone 🤗🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Breaks vs Brakes.
These cars are built completely for different purposes. Mustang is indeed for straight line drag racing but Corolla's short wheel base and suspension setup is for veering through corners.
The problem with most all all wheel drive systems is they handle like front wheel drive. Even venerable systems like Subaru feel like front wheel drive in the beginning of a corner. I had an early model USDM WRX with aftermarket sway bars that evened out the handling some and it still felt more front drive than anything.
Interesting times for the vette 😆. I remember my old 1998 trans-am ls1 was pulling 1/4 mile times in the 13 sec area with a heavier body and SLOWER manual gearbox *auto is easier to launch!, so how a lighter vette was about 16 seconds is hilarious, they were never that slow.
From a roll, if you are using manual transmission then you should also downshift too to be fair, autos usually have a sport mode for that (that should have been utilized. )
Corvettes also came with better Servo's which is why we usually use them on other applications. One could have speculations as to what happened but all it matters is that in THIS situation it took an L regardless of why
They are testing from a mile high. That C5 should be mid 13s or faster at sea level. However, it's also old, so who knows the condition of the engine.
I've always preferred Chevy and the LS when it comes to domestic. When it comes to mods, durability, reliability and after market support but when it comes to sound the 5.0 always sounded way better for me and if you throw the GT350 voodoo engine in to the equation then that thing is absolute musical symphony
As a die hard camaro guy, I currently have the GT350 and you are so right!
Nothing can compare the sound, style and Power of a muscle car, no matter how Quick and expensive r the news models
Dude in the Corolla didn't even try, his shifting was so slow. Corolla would have lost anyway but he wasn't even trying. I miss slap shifting my 650hp Eclipse drag car.
One of the best tools these guys could use is a draggy for actual braking data. When you're going off cones its not 100% accurate as reaction time can play a role and where exactly you start braking is a factor. Also it would be great to swap drivers in these cars to get a better sample size for drivers that aren't as fast. Cool to see how aged cars still hold up to new stuff tho. You just don't have the best data as to how old the brake fluid is, pad/rotor, or tire condition. Also having manual vs auto isn't a perfect sample.
I agree on that....those numbers they got are Not making sense, wayyy too low a distance..
@@skip741x3 Yeah a non-PP Mustang beating a 458 in braking is impossible.
Great video again guys! The corvette isn't slow at all!
Thank you for watching.
GM really screwed the automatic Vette with the stock 2.73 gearing. The optional 3.15 turns it into a completely different car off the line, damn near a second quicker 0-60.
It's not really a fair race when you have a 'vette with a 4 speed auto. We used to call the 4 speeds the "Auto-tragic". 6 speed vette would be a different story. It's really amazing how far auto transmissions have come in the last 20 years.
I'm very impressed with Gazoo Racing. That tiny corolla did a decent job. The 4L60 in the C5 Corvette is no slouch. That transmission can shift very quick and handle the torque.
15 sec ls1 vette? Running on 7 cylinders?
That 5.0 stang kills either... even with the worst gears and tires
It's over a mile above sea level so it's being robbed of like 15 or 20% of sea level power so that's why it's slower than expected
Plus it’s the slush box transmission
4 speed auto corvettes come with ridiculously high gearing in the rear end take off is abysmal.
Hey, did you guys know that cars can go around corners too? Well, probably not the Mustang or an old Corvette, but the newer Corvettes can. How would the Mustang do against the Corolla on a track? A track with both right AND left turns, that is.
Yes, 3 cylinders can be impressive, if you have TWENTY SIX pounds of boost running through it, and you're racing older, heavier, naturally aspirated 8 cylinder cars.
I'm sure it's been mentioned already here, but even 6-7 pounds of boost on either of those V8s and it's not even remotely a competition anymore.
6 PSI on that LS1 would net between 450-500 hp, and 6 PSI on the 5.0 would have it between 500-550 hp.
26 pounds of boost on a built LS motor is easily producing over 1000hp.
lol at the title calling a 5.0 a "MASSIVE V8" 😂
In Europe 5.0 litres is a "massive engine". We never had the low gasoline prices of the USA, so 5.0 litres was the preserve of very high end luxury cars, or high end performance cars.
and the award for "most ametican comment" goes to.......
It isn't a big block, but it's still a big V8 in modern times. A 5.0L DOHC Coyote is roughly the same size physically as 6.2L LT pushrod engine, because the heads are huge comparatively.
@@chrism.728yep gotta fit 2 cams on each side, 16 valves on each side and the 2 timing chains.
Via displacement though, as engines are measured... It isn't a massive engine, one of the smallest really... Now a 632... You can call that massive lol, 10.8 liters, but 5.0 is about as low as the spectrum goes on V8s. But physically... Yeah coyotes are huge haha
“Exciting Performance Car” and “Corolla” should never be said in the same sentence, ever…
I've gotten a 15.2 quarter mile in my 2002 nissan sentra se-r spec v. 2.5 litre NA, 175 hp. I never thought my 21 year old car would be faster than a modern vehicle, or a corvette! 😮
The advantage the Corolla has is the AWD system. The issue to consider is that Toyota is pushing a lot out of a 3 cylinder. Making 300HP means it's pushing 100HP per cylinder.
The Corvette is a classic, but there's also a lot of them and since they have a V8 they have room for newer and more powerful engines.
The Mustang has power but needs a way to regulate wheel spin. An AWD system would help a lot.
That Mustang is not 3900 lbs.
with them in it it is, lol
@ryanj116 😳
Yeah, I agree. Definitely not.
Yep i thought that too that year mustang is right around 3600 lbs
Correct, it's more like 3600 lbs.
I'm surprised at how slow the Vette and the Toyota were in the 1/4 mile. I expected the Vette to be at least 1 second quicker and the Toyota to be more like 2 seconds. A lot of V6 mid size family cars have pulled mid to high 15s for over 20 years now.
They are a mile above sea level. Killer for a natural aspiration car
@@sebastienh78 thanks, I didn't realize that, I should listen more :)
Hell, my 5k lb rolling refrigerator will pull a low 14. Lots of things wrong with the testing in this video.
@@sebastienh78 Both NA cars should have been running low 14's still. Lots of examples posted online of those cars performing better than this at elevation. The Corolla should've done better too honestly.
Should call this Fake car news ! Never seen people go so far out of there way to hate on a car brand . Same as trucks.
The odds of me owning any of these is about the same as me liking those sunglasses.
This was fun! Yall really got me hooked with these random car mash ups
Thank you for watching.
When stats are displayed or discussed, you guys should also throw in what you paid for each car in the tests.
The power of normally aspirated engines at 5000' is 84% of that at sea level, so the 420 hp Mustang was really about 350 hp in this test. The turbo engine with 25.2 psi of boost makes 94% of it's power at 5000' or 300x.94= 282 hp.
Lord the elevation must really be killing power. With good tires and driver that corvette was perfectly capable of 13 flat off the showroom.
Not to take anything away from the GR.... pretty cool
Same with the GT it does a 12.7
The auto was a bit slower but yeah something is off with that car. I thought I noticed a slight miss when they revved it. The slow time on the Mustang can be explained by the wheel spin. Both cars should have absolutely slaughtered the GR from a roll.
