Agreed, I think that's a huge underestimate of what it will go for at auction. Every wealthy car collector in their 30's and 40's will be clammering after it. It's a true cult legend.
TVR's aren't considered collector/desirable compared to the big dollar cars we see today.

Auctions are crazy places, will either not sell or sell for waaaaay over and end up in some Sultans collection.

That is the most uncanny sounding , gorgeously resonating engine growl I have ever heard in my 69 years . What a shame those beasts were never allowed to run free .
The TVR Cerbera Speed 12 was in the very first Gran Turismo game on the PS1. It was very difficult to drive without the right tune setup for the suspension and gearing because it had enough power to roast the tires through the first 3 gears.
Right I still remember not being able to get traction at all so much power
@@AlexLopez-pk3ix I had to set up the gas and brake on the right analog stick, steering on the left stick, then soften the suspension and spread out the gearing. Accurate throttle control was still needed, but it wasn't as bad as stock settings.
Reminds me of a first gen Dodge Viper. The side vents, side exit exhaust, and the rear bumper all bring that car to mind. Not to mention the rawness of it as well.
Yep. I’ve always wondered why anyone from Dodge never mentioned TVR. They were pretty much making the viper before the viper existed. At least I’ve never heard anyone from Dodge ever mention TVR.

Especially if you line up the the ACR and Speed12. Just throw literally everything we have in the shop at it and put it on the track. Outside of inbore suspension, the Gen 4 ACR is very much geared towards murdering the driver just after you set a fastest lap time. How I imagine it feels to drive a Speed12 at the limit.

I remember walking down a street in London in 1992, and encountering the first TVR I had ever seen, parked. The lines of the car took my breath away, just gorgeous. I walked around it and stared for 10 minutes. The feeling is still there.

Amazing, I was on a school trip and a TVR Sagaris was in the car park behind us and we were all amazed by it, seeing it in person with the shifting colours and strange design it was like seeing a UFO and it made a godly noise when it left... Imprinted TVR in my mind forever.
Many years ago I was shocked, just for seeing photos on internet of the Sagaris. AND the feeling is still here.
Cant imagine how it would be to see one TVR close.

A huge thank you to whoever thought of having that GT4 intro to the car. If it weren't for the older Gran Turismos, most of my generation wouldn't have known about all of these wonderful cars.
Speaking for myself, I always thought that the Speed 12 has always been such a uniquely striking car and I'm so glad it finally got covered on this channel 💕

This might be my favorite DriveTribe video that I've seen. There is a true sense of wonder and excitement throughout the whole video. The engine sound is unbelievable and it's incredible to think that they had to turn down the tuning. The video makes it sound like they were close to cracking the 1:1 ratio way before Koenigsegg. I'm seeing this video months after the car found a new home and sold for over 600k pounds. Still, that seems like a bargain for such a rare and amazing car. Thanks for showing it to us DT!
I lived in Manchester for about seven years and was lucky enough to own a Tuscan and Chimera which were both serviced by the TVR factory in Blackpool, they were unforgettable cars, actually I'm looking for a TVR now that I live in Florida. Miss that brand very very much.
As a '96 4.2 Cerbera owner, 'normal' seems like kind of a misnomer for such vivid cars, but the Speed 12 truly is in another stratosphere of insanity. It makes Paganis and Koenigseggs look tame. Thank you for showcasing this piece of unobtanium madness, and for delivering a healthy dose of TVR history.
I wouldn’t say tame. No real evidence other than a tvr manual or forums to back up that one. This one is not in the same league of paganis ect, Different class entirely.

@@Crsf84 Yes, I would say tame in comparison. The Speed 12 has no traction control. No ABS. No airbags. No nothing, apart from a massive engine and hardly any weight. Regular TVRs demand healthy respect, particularly in the wet, but this one is off the charts.
I think 500k is huge underestimate of what this car will go for ar auction. Every wealthy car collector in their 30s and 40's will be absolutely clammering to get thier hands on this. It's a true cult legend!

Something very similar to this, or maybe was part of the same development program, was on display at the 1999 Adelaide motor show. My record of the display placard from the event is 7.7L V12 and 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. I didn’t recognise the brand at the time, but clearly it was something very rare.

As a wee boy in the late 90s early 00s I loved TVRs and always dreamed of owning a Tuscan R.
I remember writing to them back in the day and they sent me loads of brochures and photos along with a purple speed 12 model car!
Such a shame what happened. If I ever get the chance of owning one and being able to maintain it then I will! Epic machines.

I remember when they first mentioned the Speed 12, Keith Flint of The Prodigy stated he wanted the first production car (Keith was a BIG TVR fan) Unfortunately TVR never produced a production car and sadly Keith is no longer with us. Incredibly sad on both counts.
But I thought I saw a picture of Keith standing next to 2 speed 12s purple and Liam and him both had one.

I remember years ago, around the time when I had not long past my driving test, so would have been circa 1994 / 1995, I used to buy Max Power magazine and dream of my next car being one of the many beautifully professionally modified feature cars. I remember seeing a TVR Cerbera being featured as a special project in one of the issues. Not sure if it was the speed 12 but it was one of the most beautiful cars I had ever seen at that point

TVR has always been like the Norton Motorcycles of the car world. Moments of greatness, but often struggled and changed hands too many times.

That is a very astute observation and in my opinion you are completely correct. I've owned a few Nortons and one of them I kept for that very reason.

Doing the Speed 12 challenge in Gran Turismo was the Bain of my childhood. I spent soooooo many hours memorizing the tracks and learning the car and I remember the pain and agony of spinning out after hours of perfecting the course. When I finally completed the challenge, I cried on the inside from joy and relief 😂

I still think it's the hardest car to drive in any game I've ever played. The GT40 was tricky, but the Speed 12 was another level. I still have my PS2 and the memory card with my 100% complete saved game. Ahhh, memories of working away with nothing else to do.
that challenge and this car drove myself and a friend insane.I remember this car just randomly coming out to bite you just as you thought you got the hang of it.
Basically it’s an ergonomic nightmare.&the design is crude,curious but quite terrible.it was terrible back then too.how can it be compared to the everlasting &sublime McLaren F1?

My mum and dad lived on the street practically separated by the tip, growing up playing outside and hearing a tvr everyday going up and down the main road was amazing.. then hearing one of thease.. they took one if the race cars down the long road to turn it round, never heard anything like it or as loud.. what a shame its gone now!

Amazing video, and what a car! The only disappointment was the owner not taking Mike out for a wee spin in one of them! He did say he drives the purple one.
I understand not letting someone else take it out given the reputation of the TVR's in general, and even the 4 litre Cerbera was a handful, but if the owner drives it it would have been nice to see it eat up a little tarmac and hear the engine in action.
Maybe one day Mike will get a ride in one of them!
The coolest thing about it being a one off car is that from the wear on the shifter someone obviously had some fun actually using it .

Fun fact, Gavin beach, the brilliant development director and gearbox designer from TVR did the aerodynamics for the dodge Viper are BAe Warton.

Awesome car and great video. The Panoz Gtr always fascinated me. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard on a track, and looked like the Batmibile. It would be cool if Drivetribe could track one down.
I played forza and this car never handled as well as other cars in its class. The McLaren F1 has always been my ultimate dream car, but my favorite Forza supercar was the Hennessey Venom (twin turbo Viper) followed by the Saleen S7. It always seemed as if Leguna Seca was a track specially designed for the Viper.
Well in Gran Turismo 2 you drive a Viper first in laguna seca. That beast was so uncontrollable tho.
I think back in Gran Turismo 4 days I made this car have over 1000hp. It was ridiculous fast and had a lot of traction! My friends didn´t know the car, so in races I pretendet to be just as fast as whatevery they were driving. And then at the last lap I just unleashed that thing and flew past them like a rocket.

This and the Viper, just insane underated monsters since folks didn't know the name plates. I remember one friend looking at me like "Did you just beat me with a car with a pickup engine?!" This TVR gave the same reaction!

My dad used to have a 4.2 Cerbera and that was an absolute underrated death trap...so the idea that this existed always fascinated me and devastates me that it wasn't "safe enough"

My father had one also. He run Four. Traveling down too Devon early hours. Fantastical to drop me off.
I had one too... it was partly made with Ford parts and held together with mastic and self-taping screws! :) Very cool car... will have a Sagaris before I meet my maker.

Unbelievable to see and hear this car in such detail, cars made famous by video games tend to be clouded in mystery and this really shows that the truth really can be stranger and more impressive than the fiction. As for other cars from this era of performance, I was always enamored growing up by the Lotec Sirius and the other Lotec bespoke cars, they really captured my imagination seeing them online and how rare they were and how little information was available. No idea if the Sirius or the C1000 are still around but that would make a great drivetribe video for sure.
The amount of nostalgia involved in the intro is incomprehensible. I played Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 from age 5 to age 16 until my PS2 stopped working. As soon as this video started, I was immediately transported back in time. Gave me tingles. Thank you DRIVETRIBE.

I remember speaking to one of the engineers for the Aston Martin Vulcan when it was first released at goodwood festival of speed. I said to him to him that it heavily reminded me of the speed twelve and the guy laughed in my face. Glad to know I’m not the only one who thought it looked similar.

I’ve worked on that site that is seen in the video, it used to be a compound yard for the national grid in 2014, I was a subcontractor and while working there I couldn’t get over the fact I was where TVR once functioned. There was old bits of a TVR everywhere, it was very eerie. I actually got a photo of this speed 12 and the guys there was very friendly, I’ve never been more starstruck meeting a car like this and it’s something I’ll never forget. What a legacy.
I briefly owned a TVR Tuscan V8 (289) and the clutch went out after a couple of hundred miles. I don't blame TVR, the previous owner was heavy handed. The car didn't impress me (compared to a few others i still have) and i parted ways with TVR. I changed the clutch myself and a doctor from Connecticut bought it. I actually drove it up to his house and he cashed me out and drove me to the train station. This car in this video is a specialty one off car. Pretty sweet but if I could afford it i still have a few others I'd choose before it. It can't be driven where I live. I have a '87 911 turbo with the 505 option I bought new and I drive it in the cooler months. it's been 100 for 3 months a killer.

The Speed 12 certainly hasn't been forgotten by FH4 players. Gorgeous and lethal. I leaned on it *hard* in the early game so it'll always have a place in my heart.

Saleen S7's were another car from this era I absolutely loved and never felt like they got the love they deserved from the public. Loved the video and really opened my eyes to a legend I never knew existed

Other supercars from that era or previously that were not all that loved besides the Saleen S7 was the Mosler MT900 and the Vector M12.

I liked this video and watched the whole thing....however, there wasn't enough of that engine sound. I can't imagine what it was like in person. This car was also in one of my all time favourite games, Project Gotham Racing 3. It was a 200+ mph beast on there.
Perfect intro! Saw my first Chimaera in person (Ohio...) last week and it took me right back to GT2! To be fair, Polyphony digital did a faithful rendition of the car, it was an unmanageable beast no matter the tune you gave it.

1) Peter Wheeler never actually drove the Speed 12. He couldn't get into it, for a start.
2) That car has been detailed at least twice by maxcarcare of York, who look after my cars, so I've been up close and personal with the car. I've even pushed it around his unit.
3) It could have been used on the road. Brian Hosfield (TVR's race technician) took it for a spin through Blackpool and down the M55 just before it was sold. Nick Fisher of maxcarcare was in the passenger seat!
4) Lawfield Abbott did the respray of my car and it's brilliant. It was the first car they did.
5) The Speed 12 made £540000 + 15% buyer's commission at auction.
This wasn’t on a rolling dyno like modern shops. I have grainy video of it on an axel dyno and it completely fried the internal hearing of the dyno. The shop engineer was guessing it was closer to 2200hp the way it sheered the gearing off the shafts. That’s something you see in dedicated quarter mile drag cars with 3000+ torque. This car was no joke back in it’s development days
In terms of 'Gran Turismo Legends', this car is most definitely up there with the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak Edition and the Renault Espace F1. Absolutely bonkers cars and I love them all to bits!

What size and brand tires are those?
As a blackpool boy who worked in that very tvr specialist when it was called ‘surface and design’ and once was lucky enough to go out for a ride in that absolute animal and the purple car. I can safely say that car is the most intimidating car you will ever be in the presence of. It is absolutely terrifying and one of the only cars I would be genuinely be scared to drive. I cannot stress how much of a privilege it was to experience that thing. And an experience I’ll never forget. Although it’s a huge shame. I can understand why Mr Wheeler decided to shut down the project. Many deaths would have fallen at the hands of that car.
Nah. The Tesla Model S Plaid, Rimac Navarra etc all have more power and accelerate faster than this Car

I was lucky enough to be at the press launch of grand tourismo at an event in soho - this car was there and I was talking to the old owner. His wife didn’t know he owned it as he had a secret barn full of cars lol. I was standing next to the car when he started it and the exhaust burnt my leg. Not to mention, World Driver Championship (N64-1999) had it in the game as the "EXR Mystic", as a matter of fact, it was the vehicle in the intro. I THINK it was the last or one of the last vehicles you unlocked, I never made it that far lol.

There was a guy who bought one at an action. Obviously not this exact one but one of a few prototypes and added high performance parts and tuning. When they asked him how it drove he said you cant.It became so powerful it was not drivable.
I remember this car in Project Gotham Racing 3. It’s absolutely absurd and I love it.
The other company Mr. Abbott mentions is not TBR, but TR Supercars, an engineering company based in Lytham St Annes. TR, working with former TVR Engineers built a Speed 12 with the components mentioned to use as a dynamic test rig for validation of the automotive components TR's parent company, Helical Technology, manufactures for high end marques such as McLaren & Ferrari. TR has since gone on to secure the trademarks of Speed 12 & Cerbera, and have built two more versions of the Speed 12 with twin turbocharged 6ltr V12s, producing north of 1,010bhp.
This makes me so happy. The world needs more cars that require skilled drivers. Danger was the heart and soul of motorsports history, long since faded by modern manufacturing and machines without character.

Not that you may know but any opinion on the origin of V12, as in if it was completely bespoke or had origins from, say similar head design to the speed 6 it is argued to be related?
The two continuation cars are powered by V12 engines direct from Aston Martin and cost around £1m.

1 thing that made this car especially memorable for me was the epic colors they had on offer in GT4. Those colourshifts we're the coolest thing to 8yr old me.
Graham the owner of both of these Monsters is a cool guy and very knowledgeable when it comes to TVR I have been out in the purple one and that thing is scary fast
The TVR Cerbera Speed 12 is a personal retro supercar favorite of mine. I'm glad u brought it up.
As a proud TVR owner (Tamora) I'd would love to be able to afford this. Sadly its not been heard much during its lifetime, and has largely spent life laid up. I hope whoever does buy it will use it more or at least allow others to admire the car like it was at Lakeland.
I remember reading once the Speed 12 being described as "The kind of car Hell's Debt Collector would drive."

Always thought of this as the British Viper just on steroids! Such a beast! Gota be one of the meanest looking cars ever made.Make it black and it could easily have been a Bat-mobile in one of the movies! TVR really are underrated!
Definitely not forgotten, Mike. The original Speed 12 was one of my favourite cars in Gran Turismo 2 because it was an absolute beast to handle and very keen to put its back end out.
Mike has become such a great presenter over the years. I recently rewatched the XJR-9 video from back in the day and he's come so far from then, purely driven by the love of cars. Well done sir

Side view caught the full attention of a wee lad from 2 of my car loving friends visiting my shop. He's been asking for a Wiper while searching unsuccessfully through my pre 1981 Mattel Automotive collection. I see a Dodge Wiper too.

Thats how i know about it. You had to get all platimum medals in PGR2 to get it and then it was basically unbeatable in multiplayer. That game is also how I came to love Noble which is another car that is pretty much impossible to own.
@@mushieslushie I remember they released a DLC pack for PGR2 which included the Speed 12 but with a different, fixed color compared to the one you'd unlock with Platinum Medals. So online you suddenly saw everyone driving Speed 12s and crashing all over the place, but if you saw one in a unique color you knew they got it through driving skill...
@@t3hgir I think there was also some way to cheat and unlock it by copying a game save file or something but same thing, if they couldn't drive it you know they cheated.
Project Gotham Racing was a great series, it's a shame they stopped making it
Street Fighter had Super Akuma, PGR2 had the Speed 12. Both ridiculously overpowered and almost unbeatable. PGR2 had the best online gaming community i have experienced to this day.
I am from the US, and never heard of TVR until I saw one in a movie Swordfish with John Travolta, it is a TVR Tuscan. It gets mixed reviews from a mechanical perspective, but I think it is one of the coolest looking sports cars, especially the multi color paint job version (if I had the money I would buy one, and just upgrade/fix some of the known flaws). As for too much to handle, have you seen the Aston Martin Vulcan, when Chris Harris drives it? Apparently, there is a street version of the Vulcan, I would be afraid to drive something with that much power.

I remember them coming to use the CAD system at flylde trainging in Bispham, and they had to ask Mclaran for help with the clucth.
That was unreal. I’ve always wanted to know more about the Speed 12 but there just isn’t much for pictures of it online that I could ever find. And here’s a full video up close and personal with it. Totally made my day.

The Game Project Gotham Racing had this as one of the two ultimate cars in the game. cemented it in my brain as one of my top 5 as someone in their early 20s
The noise that engine made was nothing short of astonishing. I get why they didn't take it to a track, it's nearly priceless, but man, what I would give to see that beauty fire a few shots in anger! ^_^
I've always loved TVRs, the Speed 12 being the ultimate. Mostly because of Gran Turismo. If I had the cash I'd be bidding that for sure.

Basically a first gen Viper that is even more mad and ruthless, what a legendary car this is. I love driving this in Forza Horizon.
Everything about this car, from the development process to the end product, to every little part in between, feels so magical. Like it’s imbued with this sense of mystery and enigma.
