    Another great video! The overlay of the 2 dynos really puts into perspective how different the two engines are. The only additional detail I was thinking about is how different the gearing must be between the two cars, the Viper must have significantly longer gears to achieve a similar top speed in each gear with it's lower rev limiter, which reduces the torque output to the wheels. Which is the reason why it's so annoying to me when people say "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races." This race is a PERFECT example of how untrue that is, with the Viper having a whopping 30% more torque, and just barely walking the GT350. (I usually use the 225hp/300lb-ft Foxbody vs. 240hp/160lb-ft S2000 example) Anyways keep up the amazing work, and I can't wait to see what's next for the Viper!

The viper is lighter by 300lbs but assuming they were both starting in the gear displayed on screen the mustang probably lost more from having an extra shift on the first 2 runs than from the extra weight, I still think the viper would have pulled on him had the 3rd race continued but the mustang hung with it MUCH better when it didn't have to start in that useless 1st gear

    That Viper rips, naturally aspirated 505 pounds at the wheels. This race is an example of what I've learned at an early age: No replacement for displacement. Almost 40 hp and 50 tq at the wheels with an exhaust and a tune is impressive I don't know why he was disappointed.

    • @midnight347
      @midnight347 Pƙed rokem +32

      There are other factors besides just the engines and the power they're making. The viper weighs less and has better aero that is an automatic advantage. Rpm is how to make power with less displacement that is why the gt350 has similar likely more hp than this huge 8 liter viper v10. It revs high and has very high flowing heads etc. The v10 in this order viper ecsp makes its power with alot of displacement has lots of torque don't Rev near as high and don't need to. You can say yea if you revved a v10 to 8k it would make alot more power yea but there is a replacement for displacement it's called revving higher and dohc. Boost is also a replacement for displacement. Yea if you everything the same on both more displacement usually makes more power but it depends on the overall setup. Saying there isn't a replacement for displacement isn't really true

Unrefined just pure aggression with no frills and fancy computers to keep it on the road. I have everything from viper micro machines to an huge 1/8th scale model. Funny thing you mentioning the sidewinder. I was at a car show in what must have been like 1996 and I got to sit in a sidewinder. They had one at the Tampa convention center. It was this massive, amazing car show and at the time Dodge's viper was my world, too. I had all the same shit. My dad's friend in Chicago owned one and took me for a ride with the top down going 140 mph when I was like 8 or 9. Best day of my young life. Now, I'm 35 and my landlord owns a GTS as does his son, both with like 5K miles... and I have to watch the sons (now twin turbo viper) ride to and from his warehouse next door all the time to add more cool shit to it hahaha.

    This is one of my dream cars since I was a child. I'd like to add I'm Italian and have lived in Europe all of my life, grown up loving Ferraris and driving Alfa Romeos. Still as a 6 year old kid I would walk around the streets with a blue Viper GTS model in my hands, I used to drive it carefully on smooth floors not, always careful not to scratch it. The sad thing is that this car is pretty much impossible to see in Europe, I have never seen it in person while revving its engine up higher than normal city cruising. Thanks for this in depth video, seeing the detailed torque and power curves with the fuel mix explanations was really nice. I liked the stock feel of your aftermarket exhaust before the muffler delete! It really valorized that v10 crank noise that makes the viper so special. The final result is stunning though, I appreciate your effort to find the maximum potential of this magnificent car, without ruining its essence.

    Those "adventures" with old cars are always fun... in hindsight. I once had a throttle cable break on my 1st gen MR2. Definitely no fixing that on the spot, so I wedged 2 or 3 dimes under the throttle sector, which gave me something like a 3000 rpm idle. It was just enough power to cruise along slowly on level ground, but not so much that it was difficult to start off in first gear. I could just slow down by turning off the ignition. The air conditioner also automatically opened up a separate valve to feed a little more air to the engine to compensate for the extra load, so I could increase my "throttle" a little by turning on the AC.

    60 mph in second gear just sounds crazy to me! In my car, I'm in 5th gear and halfway to redline at 60 mph. I hit second gear halfway through an intersection after a stop light.

    I am surprised that a naturally aspirated engine can gain so much power with a good exhaust. I thought mostly turbo cars are exhaust restricted.
    Sounds đŸ”„ btw

      When you think about it, that is an 8 litre engine, and so gains are logically big in terms of numbers, but in terms of specific output, they are kind of logical. Also, most old stock exhausts are not that optimised, which is why nineties cars are a fan favourite when it comes to tuning.

      Resonators don’t really restrict flow, they just reduce the raspiness that most engines make. Personally I would have gotten rid of the high flow cats and left the resonators but not my car so

    It’s crazy how far cars have came from just the 80’s-90’s. My first few cars weren’t that easy to tune, I promise you. You learned how to adjust the timing and things like that the hard way. If you messed up, you could potentially break more than just a throttle cable. Now with a computer, makes it so much easier and safer.
