Manual golf VS automatic mustang isn't exactly a fair fight
V8 vs 4Cyl
High 400hp vs Low 300hp
Yeah fr they need the dsg one
Both manual or both dct would've been fair.
It’s realistic though. Manual take rate for golf R is decently high
As stated in the video, both cars are essentially the same price, so looking at value. As well, both manufacturers claim an equivalent 0 to 60 time, so should be relatively equal in that department. They did point out most of the inequalities, so they’re quite up front about all that.
DSG makes a huge difference compared to the manual gearbox...
The fact a manual was used over a Auto DSG made me sick. This video is a no from me.
Does the dsg variant come with more hp? If not, the result would've been the same.
@@edwpolanco yes it does and it shifts faster then a human Google the golf r manual vs dsg stats
@@tombentley6329 What about 30mph race?
Wrong - just take a look at the diff in performance (as documented by Car&Driver): "2022 Golf R with the seven-speed automatic transmission hit 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds; with the six-speed manual, the Golf R needed 4.9"
No one buys a Mustang for interior quality, space, or interior details. It is the engine. Still miss mine.
What happened to it bro
You cant compare a base Mustang interior against the top of the line interior of another manufacturer. If you at least got the premium high option has 5 interior color choices. The base has just 2, all black which you have and black/grey.
Yes you can bro they cost the same😂 once you add options to a GT they can get up to 65k. You can get M2 for that.@decimator5494
@@Mr0sitoyup, hope they have fun in their fast rental car😢
@@HD_KerinoI’d take the mustang any day over any bmw
The DSG in the VW 'R' would have been a better choice.
For the money the Mustang is hard to beat. The V8 sound is unmistakable
its actually insanely easy to beat... like buy a clapped out model 3 for 15k.... leave it in the dust.
@@omardevonlittle3817M3P for 15K? Where?
That model 3 will last a month before you need to put more money in to it
@@omardevonlittle3817 lolololl not all of us are teenagers
Same thing are saying people in Germany about the price of VW.
The mustang has 100hp more and a 10 spd auto transmission. Would have been better if the VW had a DSG trans.
I agree the dsg would have been better for comparison, but the manual is more fun and has just as good of a time as the dsg, not TOO much of a difference. Sometimes (extremely rare) the manual might actually get a better time off rip. Either way the Volks had it's advantages too.
@@leofhr2966type R DSG O-60 is 4.2 manual is close to 5. No way a manual could ever beat a DSG. Thats why Porsche won’t put a manual is some RS models. The all important lap times were pitiful while testing is manual.
@@leofhr2966 Absolutely not. The DSG does the quarter in 12.4 at 111 mph. The manual is almost a second slower at 104 mph. Not only does the DSG produce more torque, but that transmission never drops boost.
Is actually 141hp more.
@@layne4376 Manuals are fun but they are slow, this is not the 90s.
The slow mo launch with the Mustang was just beautiful.
$46k for a golf. Never thought i would see that.
imagine paying $63k for a mid size Toyota pickup truck lol
Right!?! I still remember our family got a Mustang Saleen S281 convertible for less than $30K twenty years ago. But in fairness, with all the safety technologies and driving aids, I think the price increase is justified in the sense that you are safer with more relaxing driving experience.
Imagine that we pay that for a standard golf in Europe. The golf R is about 70 k
Just paid 50k for an Acura Integra lol when i was 17, corvettes were 50k
Yeah, I wouldn't be shelling out for that.
I didn't buy a mustang thinking someone was going to sit in the back ! Buy your own!
I’ve had 5 over the years and the back seat generally gets stripped out right before a/c 😂
Next race: Camaro ZL1 10 speed vs Mustang EcoBoost with a manual!
camaro is 💀
Not a fair raxe 😂 both auto
🤣 the ZL1 auto v8 sucks it does 14.7
@5:30 It looks like FORD just glued a couple of tablets onto the Mustang dash😂
What amazes me is 46000 for a GOLF!!!
Still below the average price for a vehicle in 2024 - I cannot believe what pick-ups sell for - talk about a rip off!
What’s crazy here where I live in East Tennessee. That mustang 41k and the golf r 48k.
I mean its a good car you should always Pick the dsg trans
Auto against 6 speed, where is the DSG not a fair race.
With the DSG it would not be a fair race. :)
boo hoo
The manual mustang is faster than the 10 speed auto
No dsg no launch mode vs auto trans with drag mode? Not sure what what they were going for here?
@@bryanfisher9087 basically performance cars at same price. That mustang actually $41,000 where I’m at. The golf r $46,000 with manual $48,000 dsg. To me that leaves the owner with 5,000-7,000 dollars to make it quicker and your own
Wow you have to do a better comparison. First get a better driver for the Golf R if you are going to put a manual against the 10 speed auto Mustang. 16's is atrocious unless you are running in the stratosphere. That is just bad driving. Second comparing a 6 sp manual to 10 speed auto is too huge a difference for any kind of fair comparison. Compare auto to DSG and manual to manual and you will see much closer races.
The driver didn't account for 3 seconds.
@@jasonhabedank7122 Closer to 4 seconds. Golf Rs run mid to high 12s anywhere near sea level. Even at altitude it should run way quicker than 16seconds with even a fair driver who knows how to launch and shift.
5:25 I'd just like to mention, judging a base model 300A package on interior quality isn't too fair. The GT Premiums with the 401A package feel CONSIDERABLY better. Soft touch pho-leather completely covers the drivetrain tunnel, your dash, door cards. There's accented stitching on every surface, the seats are leather, etc. Sitting in the two of them is night and day .
Very true. And I optioned mine Atlas Blue with the Carmine Red interior....fire!
What's really crazy is that $46K is now considered a "lower" cost car. Compare Consumer Price Inflation/Index before Jan 2020 to today. They are two different worlds. Maybe we should send another $100B to Ukraine and I say this as someone who happens to be 50% Ukranian.
Great job guys...!
Not quite. But it is approaching the 50k average car cost.
And people don’t see the inflation or think the economy is doing well
@@edbowejr6130 That's the crazy part. You can't even get a basic Honda Civic for less than 30k these days whereas, only a couple years ago, would have been in the high teens.

Looks too much like a Camaro.
My bone stock dsg Golf R ran 12.6 @ 108 down here in Phoenix which never gets good air and is at 1700’. How does it lose 4 freaking seconds going to Colorado?
Pretty sure they ran it with traction control on, it kills the manual Golf R
Most tests show Golf R's DSG's running the 1/4 mile without mods in the 12's and manuals in the 13's even if you take away one second for the altitude a manual should run right around the 14's.
Mine ran 12.5 @ 110.39 here in Vegas... it doesn't lose 4 seconds. It's a combo between manual trans and bad driver.
@@JVette01 Yea, man...tell them, expose this BS video. :)
@@JVette01 when are you taking your car back with the stage 1 tune?
When I was younger, build quality was not a major concern or care of mine. As I get older, a balance of build quality and performance is something I consider more seriously.
Man y'all making me want to buy another mustang 😅
Love the slo-mo at launch!
The slow motion of the Mustang off the line was incredible!
Yeah why not do both manual or both auto.. makes no sense
agree not a fair race they make it sound like the mustang is fastest. Bro if they bring the auto golf r the mustang would loose by 1 second. Also they brought mercedez auto wich is great but also not a fair race bc its the worst germain car out of audi volkswagen and bmw. I dont know it looks like they purposly did that to make look like mustang is fast 😂
The 5.0 with a six speed manual gear box is the way to go... fun to drive, fun to wake up the neighbors and reliable all day long... hell it even gets decent mileage.
You must like being the slow one! Smh
Why would I want to wake up the neighbors? Because I am a jerk?
The kid who likes to annoy his neighbors.
Oh yeah I have a 6 speed manual and it’s a kick. 1st and 2nd pull like a freight train. Just a few bolt ons and a race tune, and this car is a monster. Auto is nice in traffic and for drag racing but that’s the only advantage IMHO.
Americans don't know how to drive a manual transmission.. every year less and less Americans buy stick .. the wussyfication of the USA is strong. Change the W to a P.
We need the 7-speed DSG dual clutch Golf R.
Of course. The manual is limited by the ability of the driver.
Omg give the golf R a dsg and make it fair... The Dsg is amazing!
Omg that guy can't drive a manual!

@ContentinMesa poor track with barely any grip, poor air (turbo charged barely hets affected), poor overall run, 3 seconds is not shocking chief
Clearly have no idea what you’re watching.
Turbocharged cars are not affected by altitude the way a NA car is. A NA car loses 3% hp per 1000' elevation a turbo is less then 1%
Can we get a redo with the DSG Golf R? It would be good to see the difference. I know everyone else is complaining but it’s fair to say it’ll be a successful video after all 😂
They probably just run what's available to them. Anyone with a brain would've brought the DSG if they're trying to race a car with 171 more horsepower.
Nothing beats a V8 for the fun to drive.
When it comes to value youre not gonna beat the mustang. You can buy a 5.0 for $49,995 with a supercharger installed developing 810 hp and a full factory warranty! Pretty awesome.
Let’s remember commenters, the Mustang is on All Seasons and the Golf is on Pilot Sport tires. Get a driver with a redline clutch drop and it would have done better but would still lose in the end.
Next time, put a better driver in the Golf R. That car is much faster than that…
you lost me as soon as you guy showed the vw with the manual transmission (REALLY?) , with a DSG the vw should be able to at least make this video interesting to watch , race the two cars with the same transmission (auto or manual) , is that so difficult???
Yes, actually it is.

I currently own a 2014 mustang 5.0, so I'm not being biased when I say this but ford could have done a better job with that interior. Last week I sat in a dark horse and I was disappointed in the interior for a 65k-70k car. Honestly I prefer the interior of the 2018-2023 mustangs with the digital cluster gauge. Might trade mine in for one of those lol
I would be happy having any of these cars cuz they are all a bit of fun and also functional
Doesn't the guy driving the Mercedes know how to brake boost?
He clearly doesn't
Actualy he did great its a mercedes thats how it is, there not great in performance. They did great to bring another auto but still not a fair race. In fact in germany they buy audi volkswagen bmw porsche lambo. Alot of german avoid mercedes bc they know its not great in performance its actualy more for class and daily drive.
This is an apples to oranges comparo with nothing unsuspecting to offer. The point?
Having owned a 2010 V-8 Camaro & Jeep SRT: both absolute beasts - I can say I love my 2024 Golf R manual (soon to be modified to Stage 1) much more. So very immersive an experience and with a short throw shifter & AWE exhaust upgrades- this will be more bang for the book than should be allowed. Oh & it's the best daily driver on the road...
Any car buyers looking for a new car probably wont line up a VW Golf, a Benz and a Mustang as a choice. These cars are targeted at different markets. Gotta luv the v8 though. There is no replacement for displacement, no substitute for cubic inches. Sadly, Mustang is the last v8 left in the market now, its all there is, and its days are almost certainly numbered, for now at least. Mustang is a much simpler car technically, service and repair costs will be much higher with the German cars, they are technically more complicated.
Well - if parents stop sending their kids to activism camps - I mean - Public school - then we can go back to an economy that is based on reality - not “muh emotionz dude bruh”

Everyone complaining about the comparison between two very different cars needs to understand a company life TFL does’t have a budget of Top Gear so they need to make content with what they have.
I’m sure they’d love to have a DSG Golf but they might not have had the option.
Great video as always guys I really enjoy your content.

While I agree with your premise, I'm a bit disappointed in the way this comparison is presented. There needs to be some sort of purpose. Something they're trying to prove about the differences between them. All they seem to be doing is say: "The Mustang is a better car for going fast." Which is kind of a no-brainer.
They have no budget?? But yet they use a Mercedes Benz 😂

I don't care the performance, it can be the last car, but the sound of the Mustang gives goosebumps; that's enough for me to buy that car, although the interior is questionable. I don't like any electric cars, not even hybrid ones. Thanks for the video.
The backseat is actually fairly usable, my kids when they were young loved them. My opinion, it's clear Ford put an effort into making the rear seat usable. The Mustang is appointed with one of the better 2+2 rear seats that can be found. Say what you want about that VW, at a quick glance it could be one of 20 different cars. At a glance a Mustang is instantly recognized. There comes a time when you no longer want a 4 door car, buying a sports car makes a statement in your life. For those in that market; a Mustang is very hard to dismiss. It's hard to say that the shear competence of the Mustang hasn't forced BMW to significantly increase their game with the BMW M cars. Here's your decision maker when comparing a M2/3/4 vs. a Mustang, sure the BMW is a quicker, it's nicer on the inside, however you know with zero doubt, you're gonna be dumping money into that M car to keep it on the road and out of the shop. A Mustang on the other hand is built to drive to hell and back as if were any other day.
Its the incognito factor about the Golf R that makes it attractive.
The M240i XDrive would be the perfect competition. It’s a 2 door coupe.
With a tune = deadly launch!!
True...but the price is a difference
you need to be drunk to understand this comparison

Lol better fit and finish on a VW 😂😂😂all i see is plastic Garbage 🗑️ inside the cabin even a damm honda civic has a better made and better looking interior nowadays then that golf 😂lol vw clowns these days
This is why manuals are going away. Slowest shifts. Worst performance.
Manuals are going away because most Gen-Z's can't drive them.
Manuals are fun but 90% of people don't know how to race/shift properly in them.
I’m surprised the VW is only 350# lighter than the Mustang.
I think this is a great comparison! Because I have shopped these two vehicles like you have them! The mustang with the automatic so it could be more controllable for my wife and the comparison of the all-wheel drive with the manual to add a little bit more stability while having a little bit more fun with the manual transmission!
Right on!
I understand sometimes you have to work with what you have, but as soon as you mentioned that the Golf was a manual, I knew you guys couldn't be serious about this video. Or maybe you were, which is even worse. If the point was to demonstrate the value of the Mustang in terms of performance, unfortunately, you missed the mark. First, the 0-60 time of just over 4 seconds that you mentioned for the Golf R applies when it is equipped with the DSG. The DSG only adds $800 to the MSRP but significantly enhances performance. Second, you quoted the Golf R as having 315 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Again, this would be correct if you were discussing the DSG version, which is not featured in this video. The 6-speed manual version has less torque than the DSG, at 280 lb-ft. There’s no reason to expect a 315 hp sport compact to be faster than a 480 hp sports car, but if you're going to base the entire video around a particular car, in this case, the Golf R, at least use the car whose stats you are quoting. To reiterate, the car you are discussing (Golf R DSG) and the car you have (Golf R 6-Speed) differ significantly in performance. Mustangs and pony cars in general have always offered great performance for the dollar. That's not newsworthy. However, trying to make a point and then choosing the worst example of a car that is already at a disadvantage doesn’t help your case. If the goal is to show how fast a car can be compared to similarly priced cars, the Mustang, as optioned in this video, is actually more expensive than the Golf. I'm not criticizing the inclusion of these cars in a video together, but at least make an effort to properly inform viewers about what's happening. Additionally, continuing to discuss how much faster the Mustang is, as if there isn’t a clear reason why the Golf R ran a 16-second quarter mile (maybe 15 in better condition), is hard to understand. Motorweek recorded a 12.5-second quarter mile at 111 mph in the Golf R. Car and Driver reported the same time as Motorweek, and Carwow reported a 12.3 second quarter. The Mustang in this video ran a 13.6-second quarter mile (assume a 12.6 in better conditions). Don’t skirt around the issue; address it directly. Otherwise, thanks for the time and effort put into these videos. I just wish there was a bit more purpose and understanding behind what is going on here.
I don't even think they used launch control on the Mercedes.
You couldn't have said this better. You saved me from writing the paragraph myself 😂
@@evital7527 This is correct. The Mercedes should've beat the Mustang from a dig if they used launch control and actually started at the same time. The guy started late AND didn't use launch control..
Try comparing apples to apples guys.
My take, the Mustang for weekend fun,and the VW for the daily driver family car. The Mercedes while it has a Pretty interior, for some reason doesn't appeal to me enough to spend that much on.
Our next race is going to be a 1997 Toyota corolla with unmatched tires vs. a 2024 Porsche 911. And.............go!
After watching this I guess you guys have never heard the true saying, "There is no replacement for displacement." You can keep up for a little bit, but given time and length the displacement king usually ends up walking away. Cheers.
Less shots of the drivers face driving and more shots of the actual race
So fake, the Golf can be way waaay faster than this!
The Mustang GT too.
That slo-mo launch shot was great!
It would have been had we has a split screen of the VW.
I would be okay with comparison of mustang v8 manual vs Accord 2T auto (tunned if you can)
Mustang all day. Especially where I live which is close to sea level and never snows, rarely rains. Anyone who would pass on that Coyote V8 for a nicer interior isn't really a car person in my book.
Pretty close, actually considering the power difference. Both great cars! Nice to still have some good IC performance car choices at the moment.
Close !? 😂 bro did 16@97
You pick the fastest version of the mustang with the 10 speed auto against the golf r in its slowest version in a manual. Line the stang up beside a golf r with a dsg and launch control and see what the outcome is.
Such a fair fight… The Americans were too scared to bring a VW Golf R with a DSG….
Id love to see this vs thw dsg golf r. My golf r (older) dsg ran 12.8 all day bone stock. Hot lapped. No tire pressure adjustment. Jsut ran 12.8s the manual version is more than a second slower in the 1/4
Agree my cousin had a mk 7.5 golf r dsg auto he did 12.8@108. Yes manual a second slower but only if your great at it. Would have smoked mustang by one second.
Coming from the Elantra N, I can't help but love my new s650 Mustang GT. Coming from that Hyundai Ecobox, the interior of my base GT is still a pretty decent upgrade. (far less creaky plastic)
Does the GT Premium have a better interior?
While the fun factor of the 6 speed manual is better than an auto, the DSG would have been a much better and interesting race.
Mustangs with the track options are good for drag racing and taking corners.
Tfl how about adding salom course to these reviews to test handling . Or put them on a track and with the stig . Speaking of which we haven't seen the stig for a while??
A DSG would have made a world of difference
the golf with dsg transmission is definitely MUCH FASTER on the 1/8 mile, perhaps also on the 1/4 mile.
The difference in transmissions tells me everything I need to know about this test .
As others have said, you should've raced the Mustang against the DSG Golf R.
An automatic Golf R might have still lost, but the outcome would likely have been tighter. As for a manual Mustang versus a DSG Golf R, it's hard to determine which would come out on top. Perhaps that match-up might be for another day.
Great video!!
I think the “dual screen” interior of the mustang looks better than the one large premium screen
As you Americans say, there is no replacement for displacement.
I love the vw check engine light on
Tremendous job kase. Five stars. ❤
I wish I could get one for $46k That same mustang was $68k when I went to my local Ford dealership last week. Just a bare bones gt automatic. I hope that the dealership never sells it for that price. I just laughed at the sales person.
Good comparison among two poplar choices, although not equally matched, but that is fine... you are showing them for what they are and what the possibilities may be for daily real world use...The track bragging rights stuff is chest pounding cool, but getting up at 7 am driving to work and those daily navigations make much more sense. I still think both are amazing, but the Mustang could really be better for that if they would simply remove the back seat and create a quality space back there for general/practical storage for the day-to-day. At $46k they may be affordable muscle type vehicles, but for a daily driver, that price is just not going to work for me. Comfort and fuel mileage are my premium choice.
that golf is 12.5 seconds 1/4 miles. You managed 16 seconds, good test :D
Yup combination of manual and bad driver.

I love the mustang gt I really do, I now have a golf R manual and will go back to a mustang at a later time bought it because it was the last of the manuals. The golf R traction control is very restrictive and combine that with slow shift I understand why they did a 16sec 1/4 mile. There is no way with the traction control off and in special mode that you would have done a 16s 1/4 even at that elevation hell a regular civic can do that. You need to launch that thing at 5k and shift it like you mean it. They will do low 13 high 12 the golf R engine is underrated will put about 30x hp at the wheels while the mustang will be around 390 just an fyi. Also the mustang traction control is way way less restrictive will still spin the tires under full acceleration.
That time for the golf r is shocking. Obviously manual is slower than dsg but I think better driver would get a better time
What about the R vs the AMG? They seem like they'd be a good match due to power/weight ratios.
DSG R is almost a full second faster on the quarter mile than the manual.
You guys can do better.
