You wouldn't exactly call the Mazda Miata a star drag racing car, considering it's set up for handling and agility above all else. But what happens when you swap a rip snorting V8 under the hood? That's a different story, as Tommy and Kase find out drag racing this LS-swapped Miata against the brand-new 2024 Ford Mustang GT and our equally new Porsche 911 Targa 4S!

A V8 go kart with a full interior with a Vin and Plates. I mean what more could you want in life
A Porsche, apparently.
@@Pilot545 Exactly! I'd like to see it vs a 718 now
I didnt catch "V8" in the title, clicked on it, and was so confused what tommy was driving 😂
A LS swap with a curb of 2790lbs, and 50/50 is insane.
Hate to sound like THAT guy, but it's the most impressive part of buying something like a used c5z or c6z. 3080 or under with zero weight reduction, 50/50 and a FAR more capable chassis. Even a regular coupe isn't far off and its not difficult at all getting them to 2800-2900 lbs. I was very close to LS swapping my last but the smart money is on the vette. That said, the experience in a car like that is pretty non trivial. I've driven many cobras, own a blown vette and a viper but an LS3 Miata would be an entirely different animal.
I would definitely get myself in a lot of trouble with that Miata.
That Miata is one of the few cars that actually needs a big rear spoiler to have any hope of utilizing the full power
I would love to see that Miata with giant summer race slicks and a spoiler, then rematch the 911 to see the difference.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Spoilers are for turns, not street cars in a straight line. 11’s in nowhere near fast enough to need a wing for straights.
Most impressive is shoehorning a 6.2L V8 inside a Miata!
That’s why LS swaps are so common. Old style pushrod engine makes them more compact.
I’d like to do one with a short stroke LS built for high rpm. You don’t really need the high torque in a light car so making it a high rpm screamer would be fun.
@@NBSV1 A screamer LS Miata with 650-700hp? I'd pay for that
Love seeing a guy who gets to live out his passion. We all should aspire to do that.
There is a guy in Texas that drag races an electric Miata that he built for under 20k with forklift batteries and motors. He is running in the 8 second quarter mile now...
That Miata needs an exorcist.
V8 Miata sounds epic!!!
If they brought the price down about $40k, you’d have a tons of these on the road. Great idea, but executed to a ridiculous price point.
I think thats the point. Considering a Lotus Emira with 400+ hp and even a cayman gt4 are all north of 100k. So this is around that ballpark. You're paying for someone else doing the research and putting in the sweat in order for you to daily drive it.
@@dub88accvery true, people try to put these in the same box as a stock Miata or a mustang GT, it’s so much more than that. Honestly what a value, if I had 100k-140k to buy a fun car and already owned a a daily and a pickup this would be in my top 3. I used to work at a Mazda dealer, the RF is a very good car from the factory and much more worthy of a v8 than older models.
@@dub88acc I understand what you mean, but this is not a Porsche or Lotus. Much of the engineering has already been accomplished by Mazda and Flyin’ Miata. The cost and labor of the parts is at a premium. There is no reason to buy this car if you can get those cars with loan and a full warranty or a lease. It’s a very expensive novelty otherwise that most people that enjoy Miatas are going to balk at. If you undercut those cars with a better price, then you’ve got a great opportunity to make even more money because of a value that will increase the company’s profits through volume. Everyone wins. Maybe they are doing it that way, but it doesn’t seem like it.
“Should have a 2 Liter Naturally Aspirated Squirrel underneath the hood “ 😂
Guys, I appreciate that you got on with the drag race right away! You filled all the info in the middle & finished up with an additional race. Awesome pacing of video!
$100,000 Mazda after car+mods is not really my thing but hey, the Miata crew... maybe.
Nice write-off for Roman’s personal $150k Porsche 911.
I WAS SO looking forward to watching this video but after the very first 10 seconds I'M OUTTA HERE!!!!! The SCREACHING man imploded my head!
I lived in a place where engine swapping was very common. The craziest ones I watched were a Volvo 240DL with a big-block V8 and a Suzuki Forsa with a 1.8 Toyota engine.
Needless to say, the Miata is my cup of tea.
SWEET! thanks' for keeping these alive
Just imagine how much more insane it would be with a 345 HEMI. Dave Friburger already proved that with just a cam it can produce 496 hp. With the right cam, springs, rockers, and valve relief in the pistons, I’m thinking it could push mid 500’s.
Stang runs 12.4_115. Stock. Meata. 11.26._123...any questions ????
They should do this to a Lotus!
Really fun and amazing review!
Great job guys!!!
So, the way I understood it was $75,000 on top of the price of the car. Lol. So over 100,000 for Miata? A MIATA!?!?
I've tuned a few older Miatas as well as 350z and FR-S cars with 6 speed LS swaps. Super fun combo
He said that engine has a cam… That is incredible.
Naturally aspirated squirrel 🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️ hahaha 🤣
Miata has the Heartbeat of America but that German engineering 🏁
I just watched "Ford v Ferrari" and I have always wondered why nobody makes a modern version of the AC Cobra with a roof, preferably with a 289, not a 427. Kit cars are one thing, but a factory-built car would be awesome.
That PDK gearbox in the Porsche!
Love this content!
I would LOVE to own one of these...im sure theyre at least $60k, dude has a LOT of parts and labor involved in a build like this.
Awesome video! Reminds me of the Scarab Z cars
Never thought I’d see a miata that actually looks intimidating
The fact that it hooks off the line is nuts
That car is awesome. Love the sound
What if you launched the Miata in 2nd gear? Should hook up with low torque then max HP in high rpms.
Wht about driver safety features like tracion n stability, do they work?
Great job! Sarasota my hometown! His location is actually in Bradenton 😉
Ok, now that's the dern coolest sleeper, ever....
He had the roof off its pretty much a giant parachute.
The Miata sounding like a Corvette is breaking my brain
Now that’s a nice little fun car to drift
that v8 miata is something else
Would have liked to know what the 0-60 and 1/4 figures were.
Love that miata. Wow.
I own a Miata. And love it. Even with the V8, you can't compare it to having a Cobra SC. Imo
That is alot of work to put a Camaro rear diff in that car. That's almost more work than the crate engine....
Thank you for actually launching the Targa! So frustrating to watch Roman just roll the throttle on.
Roman says he does that just to piss you off🤔
That’s hella krazy! So badazz!
Never thought I’d say this…that Miata sounds so good 👌
If I had that car I'm sure I'd get myself killed... but I'd die happy. 😁
Love when you guys do modded stuff!! That's when the Toyotas especially get really fun 😎😎
The automatic mustang would've had a better chance but that miata is insane!!!!!
When you truly think about it the miata with a big engine would be a modern Shelby Cobra
Why Tommy didnt raced with the top up? Its was removed to save weight?👀😎
Tfl need to try automatic 10 mustang
The NC ( previous generation ) miata 6 speed would hold that power I'm sure.. but ya the ND trans is definitely not gunna cut it here lol.
Sweet modern version of a Shelby. Maybe find a Miata EV AWD conversion to compare. This Miata looks to be a blast to drive.
Pretty badass! Sucks it's still a miata lol
Tommy just became a man in this Video 😂
I wonder if a Whipple would fit under the Miata’s hood. 🤔
The small/medium ones would. Seen a few with centrifugal superchargers too.
@@NBSV1 wow that would be an incredible experience driving one. Probably 600-ish hp.
Way better than a Cobra kit car if you want something to actually drive in comfort. Having a/c is a must have. Those large v8s make a lot of heat that transfers into the drivers area.
Fun and informative video.
I want to do this to my Abarth 124
The way the Miata should be with at least an Ecoboost 4 or a 6 cylinder
A V8 Miata?
There's love in the room....
I live in Miami, and drive a C7 Z06 with a 7-speed, so this is right up my alley
I've never been much of a Miata person but the last few years i started thinking it could be fun but this, this i could 100% have fun in lol now that i am retired from the army the cogs are starting to turn :D i have a naked bike with 200+hp and 150ftlb of torque that weighs 400lbs wet with no rider aids but i am 45 now so maybe this would be more mature of me lol
That’s all the Miata is, fun. You should at least drive one.
If they brought that car all the way put I hope Paul gets to take it around the track!!!
75k holy shit i was thinking 40k. Wow
Watched the interview with the guy. He said it’s all new parts from GM and a lot of chassis modifications to make it all work. For being turn-key ready, it’s not bad at all
yeah, way too overpriced.
Plus 30k doner
Why would u thi k its was only 40k ? Are you from 2008 ?
@@MonicaHolly143 an LS3 crate motor is like 10k.
Tommy, you dont have to be so dramatic FFS. Lol
Scream like a little girl dude
yeah, 13.6@114 is not exactly take your breath away acceleration...
@KZ-se4ik its the exhilaration of driving basically a mini corvette. He's driven a model 3 perf and has shown less enthusiasm. Goes to show you its not all about straight line speed. As he stated "its unhinged and raw "
Why didn't they use the automatic GT they used to compare the manual GT to?
Cause makes too much sense
@@mistersecret88Exactly! They make some really dumb decisions on this channel. That blue GT ran a 13.89 at 109. It would've hung with that Miata.
How tall his Tommy?
Three foot five
Haven’t seen the video yet. But I already know the answer. Miata. Because it’s always the answer 😎
Edit: Soooo tempted to call this guy up and swap mine!
It definitely is nice, but 75K is a little steep. Eldenbrock sell super-
charges or if you like turbo BBR.
For about 10K with Ethanol Injection people are getting about 420 hp to the wheels.
Nice!!!!!!!
Throw the C7 ZO6 supercharger on this, insanity achieved...
When we getting the 911 series? Ordering, Delivery video, full review, etc. I know it’s Roman dream car. We are fan of TFL ans Roman let’s share in his joy.
The 10 speed Auto smokes the 6 speed
Damn, the curly head guy really isn’t cut out for driving performance cars. Looks like s/he pooped from a 14 second quarter mile!
🤣🤣🤣
Then rayban uses the word “fierce”… I held back an embarrassment barf.
Why do all these car channels use the slower 6 speed mustang when they race against other cars
A wild third party engineered Miata-Vette is still no match for Porsche's precision passion.
Can a Fiat 124 Spider be converted? It’s basically an ND Miata.
They said no. Different computer architecture and they don't have the electronics to make the GM computer work with stellantis stuff.
The Miata should be called muscle car killer.
You all act like this is the first Miata with an ls in it. Taylor ray and others have had them for drifting for years.
imagine Ls7 on that miata
that miata is around 1000lbs lighter with close hp to the mustang its definitely had the upper hand
That Miata could use a small turbo
Now go put a turbo on that Miatas V8 and race again. NA vs Turbo is almost always going to be a loss for NA unless the power is through the roof. You're essentially just racing a light/small camaro against a Turbo 911.
The altitude favors a turbo.
Before watching- honestly I don't think so.
Even with a V8, the MX-5 still has fundamentally less grip on launch, and the power to weight ratio isn't enough to make that up in the quarter mile.
18:30 okay so depending upon what gear and speed, I think this is where the Badger will take it.
The manual gearbox will allow the MX-500 to get right to max power right away, the 911 will have to build boost and pick a gear. couple that with the Mx-5's top end advantage, and I would be the 911 will just steadily fall back as the speed climbs.
I am not doing good today.
The v8 Miata is cool AF but I'd rather buy a used Porsche 991 or 992 for the same money and retain a decent resale value.
What's the resale value of an LS swapped Miata in 5 -10 years? Probably not great.
I dont think you should buy for resale. Buy for smiles and enjoyment with a plan to keep it for as long as you can work a wheel and a clutch pedal.
75k seems pretty steep. Even if it included the miata.
It's not included
@@mistersecret88 I know it's not.
Labor adds up quickly when paying a shop to do the work. And, you’re basically replacing the whole drivetrain.
Open your own shop and undercut their prices. Show us how it is done.
@@amazingjason455 noway, I'm done with the automotive industry.
As per usual, if you want to go fast, it has to be a GM powerplant under the hood.
Damn, the curly head guy really isn’t cut out for driving performance cars. Looks like s/he pooped from accelerating.
Then rayban uses the word “fierce”… I held back an embarrassment barf.
Hp? I assume 425?
If you're referring the the HP of the Chevy engine in the Miata, no need to assume. The builder talks about it in the video.
LS3's are monsters. Very cool what was done but $75k is pretty steep. Just sayin.
Your blue mustang is quicker than this gray one. No matter, Miata crushes that one, too.
Does Flyin Miata still do V8 conversions?
Does FM perform V8 conversions?
While Flyin' Miata had an extensive history of building LSx-converted Miatas from 2008-2019 and built some of the most exciting Miatas to grace streets, autocrosses, tracks, and hill climbs all over the world, we have discontinued our V8 conversion service and are no longer offering turn-key builds, or conversion parts ...Sep 1, 2023
They handed over the job to this company with all the plans and schematics
Put the top on and you might beat the porche... Y'all know better!
$80,000 and you still need to provide the car?!?! So you're at over $100k when it's all said and done.... Damn!
If you have some mechanic know-how, and browse the used market, you can build this yourself for under $45k. Under 100k mile 2015-2019 Miata's are going $13k-$19k in my area, so you can find one dirt cheap if it has issues and high miles. LS3 engine off a 5th gen Camaro under $5k or find a low mile mild built one for $10Kish. New T56 magnum for under $4k. Used rear end with fresh rebuild under $1,500. Engine mounts, ECU, brakes, axles, and other misc parts $5Kish, probably less. That's under $40k on the high end. Don't forget you can sell the stock parts you pull off your Miata.
13s 1/4 ☠️ that thing slow specially for 100k!!!
The Mustang with an Auto transmission eould have done far better.
Far less fun though.
