The World's Quickest Cars: Lucid Air Sapphire v Bugatti Chiron v Tesla Plaid - Cammisa's Drag Race

- Jason Cammisa got the exclusive first test, strapped on his equipment, and broke the record: the Lucid Air Sapphire is the world's quickest-accelerating production car.
With a staggering quarter-mile performance of 9.1 seconds at 156 mph, this 1200+ horsepower 3-motor Air beat out the reigning champion, the triple-motor, 1020-hp Tesla Model S Plaid, which runs the 1/4-mile in 9.3 seconds at 152 mph.
The cars are "tied" at 2.1 seconds 0-60, though some trivia: the Lucid Air Sapphire gets to 60 mph 0.03 seconds before the Tesla Model S Plaid.
We weren't satisfied with just that race, so we also brought along the fastest-accelerating gas-powered production car, the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport. This is the 1479-hp (1500-PS) Chiron with shortened gear ratios, grippy Michelin Cup 2R tires, a fixed rear wing, and weight-reduction measures.
Even despite these hyper-aggressive Michelins' distaste for cold tarmac, the Chiron ripped off a 2.3-second, four-wheel-burnout launch from 0-to-60 mph, and then continued on to a 9.3-second, 156-mph quarter-mile performance. That is a tenth quicker to 60 mph than the "regular" Chiron has managed, and a tenth quicker through the quarter, too. That's an internal-combustion production-car 1/4-mile record for the Chiron Pur Sport - and we suspect that, in warmer conditions, this Pur Sport would be even quicker!
That's not the case with the 210-hp Ducati Panigale V4 SP2, one of the quickest superbikes in the world. It had no traction issues as MotoAmerica Supersport champion rider Josh Herrin cracked the throttle wide open, dumped the dry clutch, and ripped off a stupefying 9.3-second, 157-mph run through the quarter-mile.
This beat our last outing with the same Panigale, when it handily dusted a 2023 C8 Corvette Z06. This time, Ducati softened the suspension and dropped the fork; Josh sacrificed the clutch and kept the wheelie at bay. It's safe to say this is the limit for the SP2 - except that Ducati offers a factory Akrapovic exhaust and tune that boost horsepower. We'd love to come back and try that again!
But for the moment, it's clear: among production cars with four wheels, the Lucid Air Sapphire is now the acceleration king, with the Chiron Pur Sport in second place. In one video, Tesla went from first to third.

That is my favorite part of this series as a whole, it's such a unique and striking way to present a drag race that they manage to turn 20 seconds of drag racing in to 10 minutes of content while always keeping things moving forward.

I work at a Lucid Motors factory here in Arizona and its so unreal watching and building these cars. When theyre driving by to go to the testing area, they sound like little space ships its SO cool! Absolute love seeing Lucid cars getting the love they deserve! Things are absolutely insane

If title of this video wasn't so misleading... I would give them 10 / 10. However.... it takes one google search to find out that these cars are nowhere near the fastest cars in 2023. Hint...Koenigsegg Jesko, Rimac, McMurtry Spéirling etc.
Superb video production. Hats off to Lucid Motor's team. But for $250k the Plaid is a no-brainer winner to me. The Chiron is $4M is just for status but far from being a winner ($/hp) and on the 1/4 mile race.

LMAO that M5 was the old 400HP one, not even the 500HP one that came out 13 years ago. It's still faster but at least put one of the newer ones in there then see if it can catch it or not.
Doesn’t matter how many races I watch from you guys, that effect where you get out of the car at the finish line while the cars are still moving is one of the coolest editing techniques in existence!

Graphics in this video are top notch. Benchmark setter for the reviewers and an amazing video for the viewers
after rewatching it, they just reshot the drivers slowlyy driving the vehicle and with Jason actually stepping out of the car. adding some smoke and blur effects to make it seem super slowmo. cuz u can notice from the actual race the drivers wore helmets.
It's actually god awful, like they try to cater to highschoolers.

I can see that the LUCID is king but both the LUCID and the TESLA are not very sexy looking design-wise. For me, I would still buy the 10.5-second quarter-mile Corvette Z06. This is a car that turns heads with its very striking design. The LUCID, the TESLA, and the Z06 are all about the same price at a little over $100,000.
I forgot to mention that you could also install a twin turbo on the corvette for about $20,000 and that would give you over 1,000 horsepower.
Now bring out the fastest production bike, H2R with extended swingarm pack ~ 8 sec 1/4 mile.
I watch an enormous amount of automotive CZcams content but strangely don’t seem to have come across this channel before. Not only was the video content great, but the post-production FX are mind-boggling. This is Hollywood level. Wow.

Let's make this fair, and compare to the current Tesla prototype, the Plaid +. Or even a Telsa Roadster, which is quicker than the S, and has a top speed of 250 mph.

The four-wheel burnout of the Chiron, the way the Lucid just disappears, the way the Chrion regains everything it lost to the Tesla by the line, and that motorcycle rider -- all of it is just INSANE. Low 9''s for everyone on a dusty racetrack... these things are all stupid stupid fast. I'm glad you could capture the drama for this incredible video!

I’m a P100X owner and that Lucid is absolutely mind blowing. Neck-snapping acceleration with 4-doors and luxury comfort? Wow.
And it feels like the era of EVs has just started. With those 4-door sedans it seems like they aren't seriously even trying to beat ICE supercars. Bugatti is not a familycar which you take to supermarket. Lucid and Tesla are. They are "normal" cars with insane torque. Because why not?
Luxury comfort? The Model S may have good acceleration but its far from luxurious or comfortable for the price.
@yissibiiyte I beg to differ. I picked up a Plaid for 68 K a couple months ago and its very comfortable to drive. Best sound system i've had in any car, the I Pad is extremely quick. Alot of nice tech and features. Maybe not worth 130K but definitely alot of car for 68K
@@tornatic1983 for 130k it is competing with things like the S-class, 7-series and CT5V. The Tesla is nowhere near that competition in any aspect except 0-60. For 68k however it makes a lot more sense.
@@yissibiiyte That really depends on what you're looking for. Plaid is not just faster than those cars you mentioned, they are WAY faster. Besides fit and finish and a couple features like massage seats, ambient lighting, and fragrance its not that much difference. I've driving a newer S Class and yeah they are nice but they are not for everybody. I've owned a Mercedes E350 myself. The Plaid is comfortable, has great tech and features. Plus you don't have to worry about much besides tires and brakes. A friend of mine who also owns a Plaid had a F90 M5 Competition before the Tesla and he says the Plaid is the best daily driver he's ever owned and it handles just as well as the M5. Different strokes for different folks.

Anything above 150mph is surprisingly stable on a sports bike. It’s full throttle from 0-100 that’s a bit scary, but you get used it.

The fact that both EVs had such a distance gain in the beginning and the chiron it stil caught up is insane amount of acceleration power.

Nothing insane here. The engine of the Chiron produces 450hp more than the Tesla and around 300 more than the Lucid. This test only shows how significantly better the EVs are compare to ICE vehicles in every possible way. Imagine what will happen when people master the electric motor and start changing it for better performance

With an aftermarket extended swingarm he probably could have knocked 2/10ths off and won. But this was a stock for stock race.
I doubt the swing arm would’ve done much.

Aftermarket swing arm and a sticker rear tire could put the bike in the 8’s. And that would still be on a 100% stock engine and ECU.

They neglect mentioning that all you have to do is stretch the swingarm to on that Ducati to keep the front wheel down, and it’ll embarrass the Lucid without adding *any* power. 🤣
Bikes have a high center of gravity, so their acceleration is limited by flipping over, far before they’re limited by traction. A stock-motor, modern liter bike,
bone stock, can dip deep into the 8’s if you lengthen the wheel base. (Don’t take my word for it - you can witness this on CZcams, all day long.)
The video alludes to this by pointing out the front wheel was hovering all the way down the straight. At that point, the electronics kick in to dial back the power to prevent it from flipping over. Longer wheelbase, and it can accelerate harder before the front wheel lifts.
The wheelbase on the bike is set to optimize for a balance of handling and acceleration road course. Adjust it for a drag race, and even these cars can’t compete.

Superb video production. Hats off to Lucid Motor's team. But for $250k the Plaid is a no-brainer winner to me. The Chiron is $4M is just for status but far from being a winner ($/hp) and on the 1/4 mile race.

Were easier because they re controling electric devices directly, motors in each wheel, whereas bugatti had to control an engine and a transmission working separately

The lucid won the race but the Ducati won my vote. The fact that he could launch that bike that hard is amazing! You said it, he pushed that bike as hard as it could be pushed. I'm surprised it was that close. I tip my hat to the rider and Ducati.
Not taking anything away from the rider (that would be beyond ignorant) but since the Duc (and every other 200Hp sport bike I know of) has both Traction and Wheelie control, you'd be surprised how easy it is to launch hard like he did. Yes it does take a good amount of experience and practice but you don't need to be a top tier pro to go this quick and fast.
And I know it needed to be a production bike for apples to apples comparison but if the Duc was extended just two to four inches, he would have easily beat the Sapphire 👍

You can even have either the V4R which, adding Akrapovic race exhaust system and Shell's racing oil, makes nearly 250bhp or the Superleggera V4 which is a V4R but lighter. Adding to the fact that US' motorcycle emission standard actually kills some bhp, I'd say that the Ducati can tie the Sapphire
@@justaname9544 I wonder given he was having trouble keeping the front down even at the end if more power would help much. Less weight might not either as depending where it's from the weight distribution might actually be worse for that particular use case with the rider being a bigger proportion and being high & far back. Of course a longer swing arm would be huge, and then maybe more power or less weight could help too :) damn nice bike.
The lucid is powered by a synchronous magnetic rotary 2 strokes engines!

You were lied to. The race was rigged. Check the front end of the Tesla at 5:28. It goes down. The Model S Driver let off accelerator. And they LIED! THE LUCID IS AN ENGINEERING PROTOTYPE, not a production car. Lucid won't start production on the Saphire until next year sometime. You can't even order one yet (try it...I did)! Let's make this fair, and compare to the current Tesla prototype, the Plaid +. Or even a Telsa Roadster, which is quicker than the S, and has a top speed of 250 mph.

Sounds like the clutch roasted about 3/4 of the entire strip. 1st gear is way too stinking tall to get that engine into the power early.

Most impressive thing was the 9.3 of the Panigale. With the cars you just use launch control and dont have to do anything. Running that time on a production motorcycle takes a hell of a lot of skill and is completely nuts.
Yeah well it's a modified bike in truth on a slight downhill straight. Chiron 9.31 had too much wheelspin, and probably would have suited a flatter surface as its torque was its strength against the bike.

The bike, and it’s time is reflective (I’d argue) of the awesomeness of bikes. It’s still a skill to be quick on a bike. I have ridden bikes for years, and no way I’m getting anywhere near that time on the same bike. But the cars…release brake and go.
@@philipjames3526 Yes yes calm down, it was 'setup' slightly different then... but the trap speed suggests the slightly down slope of this straight helped the bike tbh. 9.3sec is far faster other road ss bikes which would do well to make it into the high 9s on a non dragstrip and with a decent rider on board.
The production on these drag videos is amazing and creative. Jason as host takes it to the next level. I don't know how long it takes to make these videos but we definitely need more.

me too but would trade it in no time for timed lap videos. those are much better indicative of what vehicle is capable of. there are cars with less than a quarter of power of any of these that would wreck those on the track.

No denying the performance is great....but the plaid is still the better value. Also the plaid doesnt price itself out of the market for high performance ice cars.... the biggest difference is for that price you get hypercar acceleration and super car speed. The plaid cost the same if not a little less than an m5 or E63 yet will smoke either in a race.
How many high performance sedans are in the 250k range? Like a couple.... at that price people are looking for bespoke supercars...IE why the roadster make sense at that price point and not a plaid. Not only that.... The plaid needs to make 1100 hp to run down the sapphire...could be an update away or even the new plaid plus option....
Forget 0-60, the speed at which the chiron catches up with the Plaid is unbelievable..... what a masterpiece 😍 👏

The Chiron had to "catch up" to a car costing far less and still lost to the other EV. That's hard to swallow when you pay 4 million. It's a sweet car, but it's being crushed by family sedans. A true EV sports car, when they come, will end ICE in every respect.
@@robertbrody4032 To be fair, IC engines still do better in terms of top speed, there are plenty of high horsepower electric hypercars that are slower than ICE powered Bugattis and Koenigseggs. That being said, EV technology has allowed us to experience hypercar performance for a fraction of the price, and in practical and comfortable sedans, and that’s just incredible.
@@robertbrody4032 Never been really a fan of any Buggatis. But really its made for top speed and not 1/4 mile. Had it been a 40 mph rolling start, the ev wouldnt stand a chance. Buggati is like the Concorde. Both are massively over budget, but both will be extinct eventually but the concorde marked history, these evs are like the 787 or a350(better in almost every metric) but they are not concorde.
One more admission. I actually dont find the veyron beautiful at all but the chiron or "la voiture noire" is closest thing thats looks like, drive like and sounds like a batmobile...

Mad respect for Josh Herrin. Riding a Ducati that fast is really challenging, even for a world champion. What's amazing is that when Dani Pedrosa ran the KTM MotoGP bike, it was only about 9.1. Which shows that without a longer swingarm and totally destroying cornering ability, that's pretty much the limit for a motorcycle.

It's not like the Bugatti or the two electric ones have sportscar like cornering abilities (with the immense weight they carry that's not going to happen. It might feel that way for a few corners, but the tires will give up pretty fast.
So let them put a longer swing in...
And if you look at the quater mile races the guys from throttlehouse did with the Plaid, it's brakes seem to not be fully up to the task the enginepower can create for them.
You can bet that Bugattis and Ducatis brakes are absolutely up to the task, cause they would be pulverized by the press and people if not.
I also think the KTM would get into the 8s its just traction is the limiting factor more so due to the near 300hp.
