Ok this is why I like this channel. These guys are master story tellers. They explain every little detail about what ever the topic is. They also talk to us as if we are great friends who were there experiencing the same thing. Which many of us did. I can visualize everything talked about. I can relate to these guys. Other gaming channels will talk to you like we know nothing. Not this channel. Respect.
Master system graphics are still nice bro, i love the colorpallets on it, i don't know how to say in english. But the colors are just so ''live''. Other then the nes (wich is a great console to)
I'm in the UK too. I was undecided between the SMS and the NES. I passed up on the NES as it's just way too ugly. 30 years later and I've got a huge game collection, but still can't bring myself to buy a NES. I play my NES games on a SNES with the RetroBit RetroPort.
HappyConsoleGamer And we still have it to sell in stores, brand new. Well, almost... Same name, same company that release back in the 80's, but a clone machine with 132 games on memory (or 30 in a portable without screen).
Awesome collection. Looks like every USA retro-gamer not even know about this console. Brazilian's Sega publisher Tectoy developed some exclusive Master System titles late 90'. Not big deal, but some collectors love it. Phantasy Star is the best game of the Universe, keep going with this great work!
Great video, obviously! I always got a kick when Genesis games would turn on the SMS sound chip and use it for part of the music. Even some 32X games did this. Knuckles Chaotix is a great example of PSG combined with FM and PWM. I didn't care much for Zillion 1 or 2. I can't decide which one I like less.
we had zillion 2 as a kid and i found it so frustratingly hard i even tried to swap a friend for zillion one using the reasoning that he was getting more from zillion 2 because it was part 2 lol
Holy Shit! Wonder Boy 3! This game was amazing. My mum got it for me for my birthday and I played the shit out of it. Even my mum played it and enjoyed it. Great memories. The Master System in general was great. It was my first ever game's console. I had Double Dragon too. Used to play it in arcades and I couldn't believe it when I was able to play it at home.
+Wrestlingiswrestling My mum bought me Wonder Boy 3, as i played the previous one before although i borrowed 1 and 2. Still to this day Wonderboy 3 is in my top ten all time games. plus it had rpg elements that got me into rpg's. The game had great music, graphics and gameplay. All i can here is the 'Sidecrawler theme' which is a good thing. So nostalgic.
for you guys who say "I love this game and would play it again" there is a mod for it (I usually hate game mods) that is absolutely incredible. I believe it's called Dragon's Curse or something similar, and WOW did they do an incredible hack up on it. There are a few problems with the game play, if you don't explore the entire (greatly expanded) area you can miss vital keys and have to revert to previous save (no more codes, it has legit saves) and all shops have Karma Stone counts on them so you cannot enter them without the required number of stones.. Well worth looking into.
Socky Noob or because he didn't mention the one game that person liked so they raged out and disliked it. People take game lists very serious for some reason.
Johnny, I just want you to know that I really love your channel. The work that you guys do is fantastic and it is mind boggling to me that you don't have more subscribers. I am subbed to a lot of gaming channels, and you honestly have some of the best, quality content on CZcams. I love how each episode is like a conversation rather than a presentation. Keep doing what you're doing and I will certainly be looking forward to your next video!
I got me Mega drive for x-mas and had to trade my Master System and NES for games. My damn brother years later broke my Mega Drive and secretly bought a new one and put it in its place. Pissed off about that because it's not the one I grew up with. No games any more though, damn.
Wish the games weren't such a pain in the ass to find around my area. Though if there's a title I always try to tell people to check out if they're getting into it.....Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, that game is the shit \m/
Something you can appreciate AlphaOmegaSin. I look at my PS1 collection of 100 games... 66 of them are JRPGs, lol. Yep, that has been my genre!!!! Funny thing is.. lately I am more into arcade games (Shoot em ups, gunners, beat em ups and fighters). Lot's of Neo Geo AES and PC-Engine for the past year!!!
You could allways import some, europe have tons of master system games, and theyre not that expensive. Offcourse the shipping should be taken into account
Dude I feel ya. Eastern Pennsylvania is a bit harsh sometimes when it comes to master system shit. whenever I am at an outdoor flea market that I know sells games, I rarely see master system games. I know an indoor one that sells tons of old games, even master system, but its a bit too much to pay for me. I am always lookin for deals!
***** hmmmm....central pa there isnt alot....but we have a chain of locally owned retro stores. 3 within all 40 mins of eachother...and they got about 40 different ones in total..and this is what? 114 USA carts i think
Golvellius is one of my most beloved games from my childhood. I just want to thank you for making this video. I had completely forgotten the name and tried for years to remember it. This video brought back so many awesome memories of that game!
Loved your passion in this review. I don't stick around for 16 minute videos usually, but I couldn't wait to see what cart you were pulling from behind the stack next.
One of the best games of all time in my opinion...Wonder Boy 3: The Dragons Trap. My favourite game of all time! Highly underrated and an amazing classic game!
What you say is so true. Its not just about the game but the life you had growing up with this console. From sitting in the school yard talking about the system and games. memories at home and life growing up. Thankyou for such a great review with very many emotional attachments to life itself. Very well articulated
Master System was my first console. Forever linked to my childhood and is almost emotional to think about because those are days I wish I can relive. Great video. Alex Kidd in Monster Land is my #1.
HappyConsoleGamer Been subbed to you for a looong time. I rarely comment on ANY videos, but this one hit home for me. I was born in '81, had the Master System back in the day. Mom bought every game I asked for at Toy R' Us. I still remember that huge wall of games. It was such a great store in my hometown that they actually had an open console to try before you buy. I later realized that was the only store that did that. When she couldn't grandma was always there for me, without me asking. Amazing how she knew which ones to get that I didn't have. I didn't think about it back then, but obviously my mom asked her...I was so gullible. =P Here's my Top 10, based on how much time I put into them: 10 - After Burner (so much fun, yet every level was basically the same) 9 - California Games (Hacky-Sack achievement list...nuff said) 8 - Penguin Land (Still a difficult game today...Blue Penguin FTW!) 7 - Time Soldiers (Infinitely better with 2 players) 6 - Parlour Games (Loved the Billiards and Darts) 5 - The Ninja (Rage-gaming began early for me) 4 - Alex Kid in Shinobi World (♥ Chibi Shinobi ♥) 3 - R-Type (If you don't know this game...we aren't friends) 2 - Golvellius: The Valley of Doom (Hard to beat in one run & good music) =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= MY FAVORITE MASTER SYSTEM GAME OF ALL TIME ~~~~~~~~1 - Wonder Boy III: The Dragons Trap~~~~~~~~ =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= A few others that I liked a lot: Zillion 1 & 2 Aztec Adventure Kenseiden (easter egg of Alex Kidd, in level 3 I think) Spy vs. Spy (on the flat card) Altered Beast Space Harrier Rampage Double Dragon Shinobi Black Belt Lord of the Sword Columns (Tetris) Wonder Boy
Great video, (subbed).... I used to love my Master System. Foolishly sold it many many years ago to buy an Amiga. :(. I spent countless hours playing Miracle Warriors. I completed it a few years ago via a Master System emulator. Finally ticked of my gaming bucket list. Cheers from Scotland. Take care. :)
I used to play Master System at my cousin's when I was like 7-10 years old. But she left us soon. My top games would be The Lucky Dime Caper, Castle Of Illusion, Sonic and Asterix. The Dragons Trap is the bomb. But it's no game of my childhood so it doesn't count. But even without nostalgic feelings I can say that it's one of the best games of the 8bit/16bit era. My childhood console is the Mega Drive btw. Still got it, works perfectly. It's sublime, s'godlike, s'gooooood!
I was one of the weird guys with a master system and all my friends had nintendo. The games I used to play on it were Alex Kidd Miracle World, Reggie Jackson Baseball, WB monsterland and Blackbelt
I want to see Andrew on the show like Robman...ohhh man, you, robman AND andrew all sitting down in like a 40 minute episode and talkin about the good ol days, that would rock
Man a lot of memory's. Watching this video I love playing fantasy star and yes the contumination of the weapons, Alex kid and the lost stars I believe it is double dragon, shinobi, outrun ,y's couldn't finish it.thanks for the video dude.
My god! this is great. I was always the kid raving about Sega 8bit. cuz that was what my mother could get me. Wonder Boy III prectically raised me. Great video, great channel!
Hey, Johnny, I don't know if you know it, but you should really play SpellCaster! It's a very fun and unique game. P.S. I was watching the video and I just noticed I was wearing that same shirt while watching it! lol
Another game that was not mentioned, and one that I've recently discovered; Golden axe warrior. Its a Zelda clone, but a really good one. I urge collectors to seek it out.
Most of my friends during that time had the NES console. I wasn't impressed by it. My best friend at the time ended up getting SEGA Master System. I played it and was impressed and I had to get one for myself. I did. Going from the Atari 2600 to a SEGA Master System was like a night and day difference. I absolutely LOVED it. From the day I bought that system, I was all about SEGA. Nintendo just didn't exist to me at that time. I became a total SEGA Fanboy. You mentioned Phantasy Star. I was BLOWN AWAY by the game also. Phantasy Star is THE game that got me hooked on RPGs.
Thanks for sharing your memories. I remember being 6 and asking my parents for a Nintendo because my neighbors had one. My parents came home with a Master System instead, which I never even heard of. As a kid my favorite games were Outrun, California Games, Reggie Jackson Baseball, Psycho Fox, Dick Tracy, Penguin Land, Rambo 3, Missile Defense and Wonderboy in Monster World. Beating Wonderboy after many months of practice when I was 7 is still one of my great gaming accomplishments. I never got a chance to play Phantasy Star or Wonderboy 3 as a kid since they were both very expensive games. Nowadays both of these as well as Shinobi are now some of my favorite games for the system. It's a great console to collect for because most of the games can be found for a bargain and in good condition thanks to the sturdy boxes.
When I was growing up my older cousin Dale who lived down the road from me who was already married, and had 1 kid at the time was a huge gamer, and had every system out(no TG-16 as it was not common here in SC) and I would go too his place, and spend hours playing Master System games(only catch was I had too baby sit, which was a small price too get to play cool games), like Fantasy Star, or Alex Kidd as all I had at home at that time was my NES, Commodore 64, and Apple ][ie machines, and it was breath of fresh air to play something new, and I was blown away the day he got the Genesis model 1, playing Sonic, and it would not be till after the Model II came out, my mother finally got me a Genesis. Good memories indeed. Awesome Video there man, keep up the good work.
I love the Master System it was one of the very first consoles I ever had as a kid. I have so many great memories of this machine playing games like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Bubble Bobble, California Games and so many more. It's a shame it didn't catch on in the U.S as well as it did in the UK and Europe I think given more of a chance in the U.S it may of out done the NES.
My friend had one and I was always so fascinated with it. I remember playing Shinobi on it. I don't know if that game is any good or not but it was the best thing ever back then.
Yeah Shinobi on the Master System was awesome and Wonder Boy in Monster Land was at the time possibly the best game ever made loved that game and still to this day I have never completed it.
Well Genesis for much of it's life owned the NES and SNES. Genesis was my first console, I still remember getting home from school, and popping in Tom and Jerry, or Road Rash.
Most underrated system ever. Better graphics than the NES. As a kid we got the Master System and NES one Xmas. I actually preferred and spent more time playing the Master System due mainly to the Wonder Boy series. Thanks for giving this underrated System the love that it deserves!!
+hartfoundation99 The Master System is a great machine which deserved better exposure but better than the Genesis? lol, the Genesis has better hardware design, better controler and much better library so you're plain wrong. Also isn't it you who constantly post "geneSUX geneSUX" on some others Master System related video? lol, talking about fanaticism ;)
+alex ojideagu US vastly overhypes the NES and developers wise it would have been great to see more japanese games on Master System but Nintendo and their shit restrictions towards third parties prevented companies such as Capcom or Konami to release games on it which would have ended better than on NES. Not only this wasn't fair towards Sega but also us, gamers, missed out on great things :/
@Yohko M. You're right LOL, hartfoundation99 is always shitting on the Genesis, even in other comments right here! Bizzare how he's such a SMS fanboy and Genesis hater.
Absolutely Love your passion for this system and the nostalgic feelings you (we) get! I've said in previous comments on other videos but once again very similar story in our neighborhood besides I was the rare household on the block or in our talk in general to have SEGA instead of the NES.!!
Dude, this was my first 8bit system! All my friends had Nintendo's but I ended up getting this for Xmas and loved it!! What was really cool tho is that my mother had mad insite and we were in the process of moving to a new city. She found out that there was a rental store that only rented video games and had both Nintendo AND Master system games. Knowing this she ended up buying me the system for Xmas. My very first RPG was Miracle Warriors and I loved it. Then Phantasy Star blew that away. Golvellius(sp?) was great, so was Ghostbusters, Spy Vs Spy the cool card carts...Rampage, Cyborg Hunter, the free copy of Double Dragon that you sent away for. You could kill your partner and take away his life's and stack them to yours. I will always have a total love affair with the Master System...
Wow what a great story :) I was born in 1992 So the master system was before my time really you would have thought that I grew up in the 32-bit era? which I did In the late 90s But The first console I ever played when I was 4 years old was a Sega master System at my cousin's house they were playing Mickey mouse's castle of illusion and sonic the hedgehog 1 and it just blew my mind just being able to control these characters on screen and I remember asking my parents for a Sega master System That Christmas but this was 1996 And they'd just been discontinued in the UK that year So you could only get them used and my parents were very big on getting a warranty with an item like that so they ended up getting me The Sony PlayStation which I played from 1996 to 2002 is still one of my favourite systems But I will never forget the Sega master System And how it got me into wanting a video game system
Dude, you forgot to mention the nice Sonic games, the fighting games (Masters of Combat, Streets of Rage, etc) , Disney games etc... also to mention that it was a huge success in Europe and Brazil...
+Game Moments Vault these were games that came out way later in the console lifespan. by then, the mega drive was out and people like me and probably the guy in the video had moved on from the 8-bit era.
+nuncaleite right, Master System had a long life in Brazil (my home country) and Mega Drive was expensive... I got the Super Nintendo as a next console, 3 or 4 years after having the SMS
The Master System is a console that I was never exposed to during childhood and have very little experience with, but I love hearing about games that I'm unfamiliar with from you, Johnny, because your passion for them is so infectious. :) Games like Phantasy Star and Wonder Boy look great and I'm hoping to find some time to play some of these classics that I've missed out on. I know exactly what you mean when it comes to the sound of older consoles, and often a single sound effect or something like that from an older game can have a real impact on me and send me back.
Phantasy Star I was technicaly more impressive than Final Fantasy I, I played Phantasy Star IV as first game in series but than I became curious and replayed older games and man, first Phantasy Star was really impressive as 1987 game. Who had 3D dungeons in 8-bit era? Dungeon Master on Atari ST/Amiga had them but they were 16-bit. For me killer app for system, but very expensive and rightfully so. Plus R-Type have cool version on Master System.
No shit. The Master System was more advanced than the NES, still the NES got more memorable games. Just shows how better specs don't make the better game.
Now thanks to the, only in it for the money resellers, the whole Sega Master System market is plagued with high prices too. I swear, all the greedy eBay, Amazon, and Flea Market resellers just need to go away.
Awesome vid man! You'll be happy to hear that the master system was actually more popular here in Sweden than the nintendo nes so I've become more of a fan of the system since I moved here a little over a year ago. Thanks for spreadin' the love for such an underrated system in North America.
My favorite console of all time. That soundchip, and so many memories, of discovering new games, and buying them. It is the console that changed my life, honestly. If i am the person that i am today, it is because i had a Sega Master System. And that Wonderboy II music.. soooooo good.
I don't know why Americans were so obsessed with the NES. The Master System was far superior in every technical aspect but it lacked a little on the controllers themselves. But as far as games and comparisons, the truth is right before your eyes. You can also compare Ghouls and Ghosts, Bubble Bobble, Altered Beast, Alien 3 and Double Dragon on both machines and judge for yourself. Although there is nothing difficult to judge, this is clear as night and day. In the 8-bit TV consoles, SEGA was the king. Other awesome games on the Sega Master System that you should definitely check out are: the first Asterix, Asterix and the Great Rescue, Psycho Fox, Shinobi, Jurassic Park, Lemmings, R-Type, Shadow Of The Beast, Populous, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap (which will also have an HD remake very soon), Cool Spot (with graphics almost 16-bit), Master Of Darkness, Super Kick Off, Ultimate Soccer, Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 just to name a few. Go watch any of these games and then go watch some NES games... It's a real shame that such a great console as the Master System, didn't had the media exposure that it deserved and all because Nintendo was more capable at marketing on the US than Sega. In Europe, Master System was the king of the time because simply it was better than the NES. In America, people were deceived by a clever Nintendo marketing department and they thought that the NES was on top of the world. No, it wasn't. The best 8-bit console that existed, was and always will be, the Sega Master System.
Korakaris it was never advertised in America, the only place I ever saw it was in a sears catalogue, even games he talks about in the video that he liked for nes like final fantasy wasn't big because it wasn't advertised
It had to do with the marketing. Sega wasn't the best at marketing. Nintendo really nailed sales, it's how they rocked the market during the video game crash.
grew up with the Master System here in Sweden, and i love it, many of the games you talk about i acctualy playd back then, i especially love Wonder boy 3, acctually completed it after 20 years, awesome system and so overlooked
Just recently picked up a Master System for my collection.. I never had one as a kid but my friend Philip had one and I would go over every morning and play it while waiting for the school bus.. Awesome childhood memories..
Love the Master System, my second favourite console of all time, the Mega Dive is my first, i used to own all the game cards for the MS, loved, Rampage, Rastan, Alien Syndrome, Double Dragon, Renegade, Master Of Darkness, Astro Warrior, Ninja Gaiden, Power Strike II, Wonder Boy, Enduro Racer, Miracle Warriors, Kenseiden, i can go on all day, it had loads of amazing games. I play a lot of Master System games on my channel. Great video mate, Excellent :o)
I remember playing Zillion II back in the day,although i couldn't remember the name until i saw this video :).Awesum vid man. Master System ROCKS!!! :D
I love the Sega Master System and my favorite game on it to this day is Golvellius, and I absolutely love the music. Oh yeah this reminds me more Swagger videos! The one how he won D&D was epic haha.
I remember the master system, Alex Kidd was built into mine, my mom and dad used to spend hours playing it and writing down the Rock Paper Scissors combination, I was only 2 or 3 at the time but can always remember it, and remember other games aswell like bomber raid etc but I think sonic and Alex Kidd were the main games to have over here in England at the time, great channel btw
Love it! In grade school I was "that kid" that had an SMS instead of an NES. I remember buying "Dragon's Trap" at a weird sale at Blockbuster Video for just a couple bucks. That was pretty much the greatest bargain of my life.
omg thanks for the memories. I had a lot of those games. And the sega card games! I had a love hate relationship with Zillion. It looked cool but I never figured out what to do!
I can't believe how good you look after quitting smoking. I only started watching your videos recently, and kept reading ppl talking about it in the comments section so much I had to check out your older videos. I honestly wouldn't know that you're the same guy. I haven't had a smoke for 2 days, I hope I can keep it going and it does the same for me. You're Inspirational. But OMG I want a smoke so bad :(
The SMS and MD are my two favorite consoles of all time. Yah I didn't grow up with them being born in 1994 and all but it didn't stop me from discovering them and loving the two consoles.
The experience you describe and feeling towards this console is exactly mine. I too had this console and love it until this day, Like you I did not see the appeal of the NES and I fell in love with the colours and games of the Master System. My greatest memories are 1. Double Dragon 2. Ghostbusters 3. Rocky Subscribed!
Nice to see the Master System getting some love :) The SMS was my first console and I loved it, but not enough to keep it when the Mega Drive was coming out :( I sold my entire collection so I could afford the MD....sigh....
When I was a grade school kid in the 90s, I always thought the Genesis was the only system Sega made. Then in high school, one of my buddies mentioned the Sega Master System and was surprised to know there was a console before the Genesis. Pretty sure that I would've known of the Master Systems existence, had I owned many gaming magazines. I discovered it through emulation and I loved the games. Now I own a couple of SMS games like Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Action Fighter, Fantasy Zone 1 and 2, and so on. Normally I don't really care about systems I didn't grow up with. But the Master System library impressed me, that I'm willing to make an exception. Also thank you for sharing your memories about the Master System. Stories from long time fans who grew up with one, made me appreciate my small collection of SMS games. Still building it to this day. Out of all the SMS videos I've seen on CZcams, this is definitely one of my favorites. Can't wait to have some of these in my collection.
Wow, big trip down memory lane for me. My dad had a Master System long before I got an NES. Was such a great system. I remember playing the stupid little hidden snail maze game on the system that you could start without a cartridge in it. Good times.
Even though I was born after the master system and NES days, it's still awesome to hear about them, and what games gamers were playing back than. Johnny and Robman seem like two very down to earth cool guys, and are fun to listen to. Because of them I feel like I have to play the original phantasy star games (played online for the gamecube and absolutely love it) and mega man.
It was my first vg. I got it when I was 5 or 6 and it was amazing. I was crazy about double dragon arcade and when my father came home late at night with one big box called master system p and a single game, and I opened it was double dragon ! Oh man I didn't sleep we'll for weeks! All I wanted was to play the master system! Such great memories! Tks for the video, I also have that strange good nostálgica feeling whenever i listen to a SMS song !
I absolutely love the master system. It was my first system growing up and I still collect as much as I can for it today. I remember that one fateful day when I was 10 that I finally beat Shinobi. Some of your favorite games are mine also. I still play through Phantasy Star every year or two. It holds up surprisingly well even to this day. Loved the episode. :)
wow dude nice collection ,i still have mine with about 30 games ,my favorites are THE NINJA ,BLACK BELT ,SPACE HARRIER AND ACTION FIGHTER....thks 4 the memories...
Great vid. I have to say that I was always wondering why no one in my neighborhood (the suburbs west of Pgh, PA) owned a Master System. I opted for NES mostly because all my friends had one, but I never played the Master System. I never knew anyone who owned one in the late 80s/early 90s, and I had a pretty wide circle of friends. Not until the Internet age did I finally get to sample the Master System games.
Respect.
Wow big thank you! We are just having fun here talking about our old memories, I am glad people get a kick outta them :)
HappyConsoleGamer
Yea I feel the same way as him, it's like you can visualize easily what you're saying
Totally agree so true i wish i had a friend like Johnny and Robman.
The shenmue and skipping school episodes are legendary really can relate lol awesome channel fully agree with justin!
Master system graphics are still nice bro, i love the colorpallets on it, i don't know how to say in english. But the colors are just so ''live''. Other then the nes (wich is a great console to)
The master system is one of the most underrated piece of hardware in gaming history
Master system and Saturn are ridiculously underrated
The master system was bigger then the nes over here in the uk.
Same in Australia.
I'm in the UK too. I was undecided between the SMS and the NES. I passed up on the NES as it's just way too ugly. 30 years later and I've got a huge game collection, but still can't bring myself to buy a NES. I play my NES games on a SNES with the RetroBit RetroPort.
I found the NES was still more popular in Australia. But the SMS wasn't unpopular by any means. I preferred the SMS though.
In my school in the UK I'd say it was 90% sega master system and megadrive, 10% nes and snes.
Lol but in the majority of the world Nintendo hammered Sega to the ground
Here in Brazil, Sega Master System was very, very famous back in the end of 80´s and early 90´s !!!! Great Video !!!
The one thing I have learned over the years is how popular the master system was in Brazil! huggge fan base there! :D
HappyConsoleGamer And we still have it to sell in stores, brand new. Well, almost... Same name, same company that release back in the 80's, but a clone machine with 132 games on memory (or 30 in a portable without screen).
Does it still play cartridges? Or even Sega Cards?
SonicBoone56 No, only internal memory.
I loved my sms. And only now am i seeing it being given the appreciation it truly deserves. Underrated system.
My first console, awesome memories 😁
Same for me! Amazing flashback
Me too.
Alex Kidd is still my all time favorite character. I have just so good memories on miracle world. So sad that sega just leave that dude behind
Golvellius was my favorite Sega Master System game, followed by Transbot and Teddyboy cards. Forgot all about that game until now!
There are a lot of gamer channels and a lot of people talking about games on youtube, but you my friend, are the most passionate one out there.
Wonder boy 3 the dragons trap is still my top game of all time.
Yeah, it is timeless and hasn't aged a bit.
One person disliked this video because they are a Nintendo fanboy.
Oh Master System I will always love you
I got me Mega drive for x-mas and had to trade my Master System and NES for games.
Lot's of Neo Geo AES and PC-Engine for the past year!!!
... and listen to more Acid Bath (Dax Riggs)!!!!
*****
hmmmm....central pa there isnt alot....but we have a chain of locally owned retro stores. 3 within all 40 mins of eachother...and they got about 40 different ones in total..and this is what? 114 USA carts i think
I LOVE THE SEGA MASTER SYSTEM TO THIS DAY!!! I just loved the game OutRun!
Me too. I play my SMS games on my Mega Drive with the converter.
Outrun is one of my favourites along with Speedball 2.
Golvellius is one of my most beloved games from my childhood. I just want to thank you for making this video. I had completely forgotten the name and tried for years to remember it. This video brought back so many awesome memories of that game!
It's such a great game.
I wish I lived in the dimension where Sega still makes consoles, and Microsoft doesn't.
And sony wasn't the big giant of the 2000s
What you say is so true. Its not just about the game but the life you had growing up with this console. From sitting in the school yard talking about the system and games. memories at home and life growing up. Thankyou for such a great review with very many emotional attachments to life itself. Very well articulated
Master System was my first console. Forever linked to my childhood and is almost emotional to think about because those are days I wish I can relive. Great video. Alex Kidd in Monster Land is my #1.
This console must be the most underrated. It is overlook because of the NES and how it revived gaming. I wish I had a Master System it looks awesome.
The NES did not revive gaming in Europe and the mastet system destroyed it 2-1 in sales
ojideagu I know. I meant to say in the United States.
Here's my Top 10, based on how much time I put into them:
10 - After Burner (so much fun, yet every level was basically the same)
9 - California Games (Hacky-Sack achievement list...nuff said)
8 - Penguin Land (Still a difficult game today...Blue Penguin FTW!)
7 - Time Soldiers (Infinitely better with 2 players)
6 - Parlour Games (Loved the Billiards and Darts)
5 - The Ninja (Rage-gaming began early for me)
4 - Alex Kid in Shinobi World (♥ Chibi Shinobi ♥)
3 - R-Type (If you don't know this game...we aren't friends)
2 - Golvellius: The Valley of Doom (Hard to beat in one run & good music)
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
MY FAVORITE MASTER SYSTEM GAME OF ALL TIME
~~~~~~~~1 - Wonder Boy III: The Dragons Trap~~~~~~~~
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
A few others that I liked a lot:
Zillion 1 & 2
Aztec Adventure
Kenseiden (easter egg of Alex Kidd, in level 3 I think)
Spy vs. Spy (on the flat card)
Altered Beast
Space Harrier
Rampage
Double Dragon
Shinobi
Black Belt
Lord of the Sword
Columns (Tetris)
Wonder Boy
Great video, (subbed).... I used to love my Master System. Foolishly sold it many many years ago to buy an Amiga. :(.
I spent countless hours playing Miracle Warriors. I completed it a few years ago via a Master System emulator. Finally ticked of my gaming bucket list. Cheers from Scotland. Take care. :)
I used to play Master System at my cousin's when I was like 7-10 years old. But she left us soon. My top games would be The Lucky Dime Caper, Castle Of Illusion, Sonic and Asterix. The Dragons Trap is the bomb. But it's no game of my childhood so it doesn't count. But even without nostalgic feelings I can say that it's one of the best games of the 8bit/16bit era. My childhood console is the Mega Drive btw. Still got it, works perfectly. It's sublime, s'godlike, s'gooooood!
I was one of the weird guys with a master system and all my friends had nintendo. The games I used to play on it were Alex Kidd Miracle World, Reggie Jackson Baseball, WB monsterland and Blackbelt
blackbelt is the best! could never get past oni as a kid tho. it was depressing.
In Europe it was the reverse, few people had an NES
Wonderboy in monster land is probably my fav MS game, I had the 3D glasses and light gun too. Such great memories
I want to see Andrew on the show like Robman...ohhh man, you, robman AND andrew all sitting down in like a 40 minute episode and talkin about the good ol days, that would rock
I love hearing your memories its great seeing the SMS getting some attention ! :D
Man a lot of memory's. Watching this video I love playing fantasy star and yes the contumination of the weapons, Alex kid and the lost stars I believe it is double dragon, shinobi, outrun ,y's couldn't finish it.thanks for the video dude.
Nice stack of sms games bro i love this system!
Why did they make the US cases so stupid looking?
Rambo was my first game for that system.
Fun as f%ck!
Dude, you and I are in sync with the epicness. Every game, everyone one, I own and played like mad. I should make a video on my collection one day.
My god! this is great. I was always the kid raving about Sega 8bit. cuz that was what my mother could get me. Wonder Boy III prectically raised me. Great video, great channel!
This was my first system, I regret getting rid of it like 10 years ago.
Hey, Johnny, I don't know if you know it, but you should really play SpellCaster! It's a very fun and unique game.
P.S. I was watching the video and I just noticed I was wearing that same shirt while watching it! lol
Spot on! Its on my top 10 list for top games all systems included.
My friend just showed me this video because I love and collect for SMS. You really know your stuff man, video is great.
My personal favorite HCG video ,never gets old ,thnx always john.
Another game that was not mentioned, and one that I've recently discovered; Golden axe warrior.
Its a Zelda clone, but a really good one. I urge collectors to seek it out.
Most of my friends during that time had the NES console. I wasn't impressed by it. My best friend at the time ended up getting SEGA Master System. I played it and was impressed and I had to get one for myself. I did. Going from the Atari 2600 to a SEGA Master System was like a night and day difference. I absolutely LOVED it.
From the day I bought that system, I was all about SEGA. Nintendo just didn't exist to me at that time. I became a total SEGA Fanboy. You mentioned Phantasy Star. I was BLOWN AWAY by the game also. Phantasy Star is THE game that got me hooked on RPGs.
Thanks for sharing your memories. I remember being 6 and asking my parents for a Nintendo because my neighbors had one. My parents came home with a Master System instead, which I never even heard of. As a kid my favorite games were Outrun, California Games, Reggie Jackson Baseball, Psycho Fox, Dick Tracy, Penguin Land, Rambo 3, Missile Defense and Wonderboy in Monster World. Beating Wonderboy after many months of practice when I was 7 is still one of my great gaming accomplishments.
I never got a chance to play Phantasy Star or Wonderboy 3 as a kid since they were both very expensive games. Nowadays both of these as well as Shinobi are now some of my favorite games for the system. It's a great console to collect for because most of the games can be found for a bargain and in good condition thanks to the sturdy boxes.
When I was growing up my older cousin Dale who lived down the road from me who was already married, and had 1 kid at the time was a huge gamer, and had every system out(no TG-16 as it was not common here in SC) and I would go too his place, and spend hours playing Master System games(only catch was I had too baby sit, which was a small price too get to play cool games), like Fantasy Star, or Alex Kidd as all I had at home at that time was my NES, Commodore 64, and Apple ][ie machines, and it was breath of fresh air to play something new, and I was blown away the day he got the Genesis model 1, playing Sonic, and it would not be till after the Model II came out, my mother finally got me a Genesis. Good memories indeed. Awesome Video there man, keep up the good work.
I love the Master System it was one of the very first consoles I ever had as a kid. I have so many great memories of this machine playing games like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Bubble Bobble, California Games and so many more. It's a shame it didn't catch on in the U.S as well as it did in the UK and Europe I think given more of a chance in the U.S it may of out done the NES.
My friend had one and I was always so fascinated with it. I remember playing Shinobi on it. I don't know if that game is any good or not but it was the best thing ever back then.
nailed it!
Yeah Shinobi on the Master System was awesome and Wonder Boy in Monster Land was at the time possibly the best game ever made loved that game and still to this day I have never completed it.
Well Genesis for much of it's life owned the NES and SNES. Genesis was my first console, I still remember getting home from school, and popping in Tom and Jerry, or Road Rash.
Wonderboy 2 was great! Wonderboy 3 blew all other platform/RPGs out of the water!
Most underrated system ever. Better graphics than the NES. As a kid we got the Master System and NES one Xmas. I actually preferred and spent more time playing the Master System due mainly to the Wonder Boy series. Thanks for giving this underrated System the love that it deserves!!
It's not underrated in Europe. It's the US that completely overhypes the NES
+hartfoundation99
The Master System is a great machine which deserved better exposure but better than the Genesis? lol, the Genesis has better hardware design, better controler and much better library so you're plain wrong. Also isn't it you who constantly post "geneSUX geneSUX" on some others Master System related video? lol, talking about fanaticism ;)
+alex ojideagu
US vastly overhypes the NES and developers wise it would have been great to see more japanese games on Master System but Nintendo and their shit restrictions towards third parties prevented companies such as Capcom or Konami to release games on it which would have ended better than on NES. Not only this wasn't fair towards Sega but also us, gamers, missed out on great things :/
@Yohko M. You're right LOL, hartfoundation99 is always shitting on the Genesis, even in other comments right here! Bizzare how he's such a SMS fanboy and Genesis hater.
Absolutely Love your passion for this system and the nostalgic feelings you (we) get! I've said in previous comments on other videos but once again very similar story in our neighborhood besides I was the rare household on the block or in our talk in general to have SEGA instead of the NES.!!
In Europe the master system destroyed the NES
Wow! Zillion brings back so many memories! I don't own a Master System...but I would love to just own the cart!! Great vid Mr. Millennium!
Dude, this was my first 8bit system! All my friends had Nintendo's but I ended up getting this for Xmas and loved it!! What was really cool tho is that my mother had mad insite and we were in the process of moving to a new city. She found out that there was a rental store that only rented video games and had both Nintendo AND Master system games. Knowing this she ended up buying me the system for Xmas.
My very first RPG was Miracle Warriors and I loved it. Then Phantasy Star blew that away. Golvellius(sp?) was great, so was Ghostbusters, Spy Vs Spy the cool card carts...Rampage, Cyborg Hunter, the free copy of Double Dragon that you sent away for. You could kill your partner and take away his life's and stack them to yours.
I will always have a total love affair with the Master System...
Wow what a great story :) I was born in 1992 So the master system was before my time really you would have thought that I grew up in the 32-bit era? which I did In the late 90s But The first console I ever played when I was 4 years old was a Sega master System at my cousin's house they were playing Mickey mouse's castle of illusion and sonic the hedgehog 1 and it just blew my mind just being able to control these characters on screen and I remember asking my parents for a Sega master System That Christmas but this was 1996 And they'd just been discontinued in the UK that year So you could only get them used and my parents were very big on getting a warranty with an item like that so they ended up getting me The Sony PlayStation which I played from 1996 to 2002 is still one of my favourite systems But I will never forget the Sega master System And how it got me into wanting a video game system
Master System was more successful down here in Australia too in comparison to the NES
You nailed the top games pretty much spot on! :D I loved the machine as well.
This was my first console.. and my favorite. Still got it, and it works like a dream! Great video!
Dude, you forgot to mention the nice Sonic games, the fighting games (Masters of Combat, Streets of Rage, etc) , Disney games etc... also to mention that it was a huge success in Europe and Brazil...
+Game Moments Vault these were games that came out way later in the console lifespan. by then, the mega drive was out and people like me and probably the guy in the video had moved on from the 8-bit era.
+nuncaleite right, Master System had a long life in Brazil (my home country) and Mega Drive was expensive... I got the Super Nintendo as a next console, 3 or 4 years after having the SMS
+Game Moments Vault Europe and Brasil got some of the best SMS games... the late Sonic, Electronic Arts games, Disney games, Codemasters, etc...
+Gabriele Riva codemasters? ?
Game Moments Vault
Yes, Micro Machines, Fantastic Dizzy.
Double Dragon SMS ALL DAY!!!
The Master System is a console that I was never exposed to during childhood and have very little experience with, but I love hearing about games that I'm unfamiliar with from you, Johnny, because your passion for them is so infectious. :) Games like Phantasy Star and Wonder Boy look great and I'm hoping to find some time to play some of these classics that I've missed out on.
I know exactly what you mean when it comes to the sound of older consoles, and often a single sound effect or something like that from an older game can have a real impact on me and send me back.
Yay! Thanks Johnny I've wanted you to do this one for a while. Keep sharing your passion, you rock man!
Phantasy Star I was technicaly more impressive than Final Fantasy I, I played Phantasy Star IV as first game in series but than I became curious and replayed older games and man, first Phantasy Star was really impressive as 1987 game. Who had 3D dungeons in 8-bit era? Dungeon Master on Atari ST/Amiga had them but they were 16-bit. For me killer app for system, but very expensive and rightfully so. Plus R-Type have cool version on Master System.
No shit. The Master System was more advanced than the NES, still the NES got more memorable games. Just shows how better specs don't make the better game.
Now thanks to the, only in it for the money resellers, the whole Sega Master System market is plagued with high prices too. I swear, all the greedy eBay, Amazon, and Flea Market resellers just need to go away.
An ancient stone with carvings in it, would cost alot of money. But a stone with carvings today would have no value. Time = Value.
@@knight654654 Greed =/= value
These videos are EXACTLY why Retro Gaming will never die! Good stuff as always I really enjoyed it!
Cool to see a video like this, I haven't played much on SMS and before this only knew of Phantasy Star and Wonder Boy basically
My first console lol
Mine too after a 2600!
more d&d stories more d&d stories pl,ewaeaeaeaeaeaeaeaeaESE
Happy to announce we are working on one! :)
HappyConsoleGamer +1 Dagger of limitless skittles! Taste great but totally useless. Our DM is very imaginary.
HappyConsoleGamer
My DM was a stoner and invented the magic "bowl of ever smoking". ....(sigh)... yeah.
HappyConsoleGamer cool man cant wait
Awesome vid man! You'll be happy to hear that the master system was actually more popular here in Sweden than the nintendo nes so I've become more of a fan of the system since I moved here a little over a year ago. Thanks for spreadin' the love for such an underrated system in North America.
My favorite console of all time. That soundchip, and so many memories, of discovering new games, and buying them. It is the console that changed my life, honestly. If i am the person that i am today, it is because i had a Sega Master System. And that Wonderboy II music.. soooooo good.
I don't know why Americans were so obsessed with the NES. The Master System was far superior in every technical aspect but it lacked a little on the controllers themselves. But as far as games and comparisons, the truth is right before your eyes. You can also compare Ghouls and Ghosts, Bubble Bobble, Altered Beast, Alien 3 and Double Dragon on both machines and judge for yourself. Although there is nothing difficult to judge, this is clear as night and day. In the 8-bit TV consoles, SEGA was the king. Other awesome games on the Sega Master System that you should definitely check out are: the first Asterix, Asterix and the Great Rescue, Psycho Fox, Shinobi, Jurassic Park, Lemmings, R-Type, Shadow Of The Beast, Populous, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap (which will also have an HD remake very soon), Cool Spot (with graphics almost 16-bit), Master Of Darkness, Super Kick Off, Ultimate Soccer, Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 just to name a few. Go watch any of these games and then go watch some NES games... It's a real shame that such a great console as the Master System, didn't had the media exposure that it deserved and all because Nintendo was more capable at marketing on the US than Sega. In Europe, Master System was the king of the time because simply it was better than the NES. In America, people were deceived by a clever Nintendo marketing department and they thought that the NES was on top of the world. No, it wasn't. The best 8-bit console that existed, was and always will be, the Sega Master System.
Korakaris it was never advertised in America, the only place I ever saw it was in a sears catalogue, even games he talks about in the video that he liked for nes like final fantasy wasn't big because it wasn't advertised
+shadowshinobi06 the Japanese console had an fM audio chip
It had to do with the marketing. Sega wasn't the best at marketing. Nintendo really nailed sales, it's how they rocked the market during the video game crash.
Master System was always better than NES. Nintendo was pure hype that everyone bought into.
grew up with the Master System here in Sweden, and i love it, many of the games you talk about i acctualy playd back then, i especially love Wonder boy 3, acctually completed it after 20 years, awesome system and so overlooked
I'm happy to come back to this episode after binging some more if your content, Johnny!
Love hearing your stories. Takes me back..
Such a nostalgic video! Top stuff Johnny!
Just recently picked up a Master System for my collection.. I never had one as a kid but my friend Philip had one and I would go over every morning and play it while waiting for the school bus.. Awesome childhood memories..
Love the Master System, my second favourite console of all time, the Mega Dive is my first, i used to own all the game cards for the MS, loved, Rampage, Rastan, Alien Syndrome, Double Dragon, Renegade, Master Of Darkness, Astro Warrior, Ninja Gaiden, Power Strike II, Wonder Boy, Enduro Racer, Miracle Warriors, Kenseiden, i can go on all day, it had loads of amazing games.
I play a lot of Master System games on my channel.
Great video mate, Excellent :o)
I just buy a Sega master system 4 days ago can wait to get in my mail and play thanks for your video you have the best sms games of all Times
I remember playing Zillion II back in the day,although i couldn't remember the name until i saw this video :).Awesum vid man. Master System ROCKS!!! :D
I love the Sega Master System and my favorite game on it to this day is Golvellius, and I absolutely love the music. Oh yeah this reminds me more Swagger videos! The one how he won D&D was epic haha.
I remember the master system, Alex Kidd was built into mine, my mom and dad used to spend hours playing it and writing down the Rock Paper Scissors combination, I was only 2 or 3 at the time but can always remember it, and remember other games aswell like bomber raid etc but I think sonic and Alex Kidd were the main games to have over here in England at the time, great channel btw
You get just as excited as I do about your video games. Right on man.
Love it! In grade school I was "that kid" that had an SMS instead of an NES. I remember buying "Dragon's Trap" at a weird sale at Blockbuster Video for just a couple bucks. That was pretty much the greatest bargain of my life.
11:25 You did justice to that title sir! one of my fav games of all time
Love the Wonderboy games!
omg thanks for the memories. I had a lot of those games. And the sega card games! I had a love hate relationship with Zillion. It looked cool but I never figured out what to do!
I can't believe how good you look after quitting smoking. I only started watching your videos recently, and kept reading ppl talking about it in the comments section so much I had to check out your older videos. I honestly wouldn't know that you're the same guy.
I haven't had a smoke for 2 days, I hope I can keep it going and it does the same for me. You're Inspirational. But OMG I want a smoke so bad :(
How are you doing? :)
Great video! Your passion for the SMS is contagious!
Lol I love this guy. Brings back great memories. Sega fan forever!!
Thanks for taking us through your personal journal with the master system! Excellent work!
The SMS and MD are my two favorite consoles of all time. Yah I didn't grow up with them being born in 1994 and all but it didn't stop me from discovering them and loving the two consoles.
The experience you describe and feeling towards this console is exactly mine. I too had this console and love it until this day, Like you I did not see the appeal of the NES and I fell in love with the colours and games of the Master System.
My greatest memories are
1. Double Dragon
2. Ghostbusters
3. Rocky
Subscribed!
Excellent review! It is good to see more love for the Master System.
Wonderboy III the dragons trap is one of my favorite games ever.
First system I ever purchased with my own, hard-earned cash. Thanks for sharing the memories, HCG.
Nice to see the Master System getting some love :)
The SMS was my first console and I loved it, but not enough to keep it when the Mega Drive was coming out :(
I sold my entire collection so I could afford the MD....sigh....
When I was a grade school kid in the 90s, I always thought the Genesis was the only system Sega made. Then in high school, one of my buddies mentioned the Sega Master System and was surprised to know there was a console before the Genesis. Pretty sure that I would've known of the Master Systems existence, had I owned many gaming magazines. I discovered it through emulation and I loved the games. Now I own a couple of SMS games like Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Action Fighter, Fantasy Zone 1 and 2, and so on. Normally I don't really care about systems I didn't grow up with. But the Master System library impressed me, that I'm willing to make an exception.
Also thank you for sharing your memories about the Master System. Stories from long time fans who grew up with one, made me appreciate my small collection of SMS games. Still building it to this day. Out of all the SMS videos I've seen on CZcams, this is definitely one of my favorites. Can't wait to have some of these in my collection.
Wow, big trip down memory lane for me. My dad had a Master System long before I got an NES. Was such a great system. I remember playing the stupid little hidden snail maze game on the system that you could start without a cartridge in it. Good times.
Even though I was born after the master system and NES days, it's still awesome to hear about them, and what games gamers were playing back than. Johnny and Robman seem like two very down to earth cool guys, and are fun to listen to. Because of them I feel like I have to play the original phantasy star games (played online for the gamecube and absolutely love it) and mega man.
Great stuff! I was hoping you'd mention Rocky but oh well, at least you mentioned Miracle Warrior =]
It was my first vg. I got it when I was 5 or 6 and it was amazing. I was crazy about double dragon arcade and when my father came home late at night with one big box called master system p and a single game, and I opened it was double dragon ! Oh man I didn't sleep we'll for weeks! All I wanted was to play the master system! Such great memories! Tks for the video, I also have that strange good nostálgica feeling whenever i listen to a SMS song !
I absolutely love the master system. It was my first system growing up and I still collect as much as I can for it today. I remember that one fateful day when I was 10 that I finally beat Shinobi. Some of your favorite games are mine also. I still play through Phantasy Star every year or two. It holds up surprisingly well even to this day. Loved the episode. :)
This is like a time machine for me ..Very good Memories with sega as a child
OH MY GOD! I had forgotten about Phantasy Zone, that game was so AMAZING! Man this channel is awesome, I’m constantly going back to my childhood.
I'm So glad you mentioned Wonderboy 3 The Dragons trap, one of my fave games plus it had the RPG elements, Double Dragon was great too, good vid.
wow dude nice collection ,i still have mine with about 30 games ,my favorites are THE NINJA ,BLACK BELT ,SPACE HARRIER AND ACTION FIGHTER....thks 4 the memories...
Great vid. I have to say that I was always wondering why no one in my neighborhood (the suburbs west of Pgh, PA) owned a Master System. I opted for NES mostly because all my friends had one, but I never played the Master System. I never knew anyone who owned one in the late 80s/early 90s, and I had a pretty wide circle of friends. Not until the Internet age did I finally get to sample the Master System games.
