Sega Master System was HUGE in other countries. It was fine here in the states and people who had one loved it, myself included. Here are some SMS games that were released after Genesis was launched.

I'm thinking I'd like to get a Sega Master System.
was it inside your shirt? lol
Just a thought, unless you have already done it, the arcade ports to the Nintendo SPECIALLY 16 bit. I got Renegade only on the box art when I was 8 and never knew it was an arcade port. 6 out of 10 so "D" Tier???
💖SHINOBI was the mascot before Alex Kidd.
Way more Iconic (at the time ) than Alex kidd. One of the only franchise to have its game on every home console portable console and even arcade. Shinobi has to make a come back.
Dead angle is like a ghost of someone killed by the mob getting their lead filled revenge
haha, I love that idea.
Should have been the actual plot
The SMS was for sure one of my gaming highlights growing up as a kid, as I was never much in to being a fanboy of one system over another, I was just about the games. And while the NES had tons of great games, the best games on the SMS were some of the best to be had at the time.
I love the concept of these series of videos. It's a shame the Master System didn't have a longer lifespan in the US, because here in Europe there were many more games (and sometimes great games) until at least 1994. Anyway, Ghouls'n Ghosts on the Master System is great but too easy in my book, because of the upgrades you can buy. Sonic, as you said, is not a port of the 16-bit game, and many people, including myself, consider the Master System one to be the superior version. It has better level design.
I totally agree with the Master System Version of Sonic.
Yup. Power Strike 2, Land of Illusion, Road Rash, Ninja Gaiden, Jurassic Park, Lucky Dime Caper, etc. - some of the best came pretty late.
For anybody interested, there's a rom hack of Golden Axe Warrior that turns it into a Zelda game -- Ax Battler becomes Link, and all the enemies become Zelda monsters. It's really awesome!
I used to own a Sega Master System, I had both models and I really liked the version 2 model Kaybee Toys had them reduced and a whole wall of Golden Ave Warriors games
The Master System 2 was a more budget-friendly system but they took away the card slot there's only a few card games made for the Master System I guess that's why they did that, my favorite game for the system was Golden Axe Warrior, definitely one of the best games made for the Master System
I bought the model 2 at KayBee for 35.00 😅
Transbot on the game card!
Hey, John!
I actually played many of these when I was a kid. In Brazil, the SMS was a big deal, and I really believe they still sell it around here... Those things with a lot of games in its memory...
It's a shame that Tec Toy is but a shade of what they used to be back then, though...
Anyways, nice video, lots of good memories... Cheers!
I let out an audible 'Yes!' when the intro to Spellcaster came on.
It's a great game for Master System.
I especially like the art and music for it but it's superb all around.
I love the Sega Master System. I always go for the underdog.
Thanks for the video and giving the Master System some more attention. One thing I like about Master System VS. Genesis ports is that the Master System port sometimes give you a bigger view to work with.
A good example of this is the Hulk. On the Genesis the screen is very crunched up, but on the Master System the view is more widescreen like.
Fun Fact: Spellcaster and Mystic Defender are both anime games, as they are called "Kujaku Ou" and "Kujaku Ou 2: Geneishiro" respectively in Japan. The anime is also known in the west as Peacock King.
Fun detail on the Spellcaster, guys hair gets white, shading when he's charging his magic attack thingy. Super Sayan thingy?
That list had 100% of my impressive MS collection. (Fox and the mouse.)
I love the Gummi Bears show, as a kid, and still as an adult. I would love a game
There were Sonic games on the Master System most people often forget about, so happy you mentioned them.
Brazil still keeps supporting SEGA games almost like an Uncle from Another World who still thinks SEGA is in the Console Market.
Yes, there are still Genesis (Mega Drive here in Brazil) and Master Systems being made and sold around here. Not as much as before, but they do still exist.
Gummi Bears!!! I used to watch The Smurfs with my parents every Saturday morning on NBC. I think Gummi Bears was on at 7am and Smurfs were from 8:00-9:30. My Dad used to record them on VHS and go to sleep watching them too lol
Spellcaster and Mystic Defender are part of a license in Japan that's called... I think it's spelled Kujaku Ou (might be a Y in there somewhere) or Peacock King, which also had a few games on the NES that played a bit like Sword of Hope or those Phantasy Star 2 Adventures. I don't know much else about the license, but I believe it was some kind of carton and/or comic over in Japan, too.
Ghouls & Ghosts was really cool on the Master System; it doesn't play much like anything else in the series, because you're looking for straight upgrades that are permanent, and can even give you a lifebar. Believe it or not, I found myself really enjoying Aerial Assault, too; it seems pretty basic at first, but does get more interesting as you get further into it.
I hate hate hate that I cleaned off the UPC stickers on my Sonic and Spiderman. Back then, people didn't think of the future of old games. up to that point, old was old and dismissed
Golden Axe Warrior is still to this day is still my absolute favorite master system game. I never owned the system (yet) so I experienced it through the Sonic Genesis collection on the 360 and I was so blown away by it. Completely turns Zelda 1on its head imo.
Castle of Illusion is so good on both of the versions. Love it dearly. Some of these games after the genesis release are so impressive
I think the Game Gear being basically a master system was an underrated genius idea. Which unfortunately didn't pan out due to the extremely low battery life of the system and having to compete with the a monster of a system like the original gameboy.
But yeah, those consoles being similar meant that they could support the growth of their handheld, while for almost the same amount of money keep supporting their previous home console the master system, specially in the regions where it was succesful like europe and brazil. Which means that they ccould afford to put extra effort on their handheld games, but also port existing master system games and yeah... I would say that the average game gear game is of higher quality than the average gameboy game for sure. Not to mention this allowed retrocompatibility through an accessory.
The closest thing I can think of is how lots of psp games were also released in ps2 way after the ps3 had launched.
Well the GG and SMS had two differences:
- Game Gear had a smaller screen
- Game Gear had a superior palette (even more than the Genesis)
So porting the games wasn't straight forward. If porting to the Game Gear, the smaller screen had to be taken into account, but they could use better colors (Sonic 1 on the GG uses the correct colors for his sneakers). If porting to the Master System, well adjustments to the palette would have to be made (since GG uses 2 bytes, while SMS uses 1 byte for each color).
I will say Streets of Rage 2 on GG looks really good for an 8-bit system. An example where the use of colors was taken into consideration.
We stopped making games here in Brazil since the 90's... Just to mention it. On the other hand, the master system console is on sale every once in a while.
That part in Captain Silver where you jump on the water fountain reminds me of that Cabbage Patch Kids game on ColecoVision
I was having a bad day, but watching your videos always makes it a bit better. Thanks for the content, John!
I've started Golden Axe Warrior so many times and always get bored and never finish it. One day, one day I will defeat it. . .
I wouldn't have taken much art work change to make it Alex Kid VS Spiderman. It's always fun looking back this was interesting seeing the MS in its latter years.
9:05 -- Actually it's KATIE (one of the three kids from the Moonwalker movie) you're finding/rescuing in this and the Genesis version (and there she has her dangling teddy bear from the movie). It's only the arcade version you can find/rescue all three kids.
You're right, John, it is really freakin' weird that we never got a Gummi Bears game. Not only didn't we get one on any console, but we didn't even get one on a computer either. You'd think that by now someone would have at least released a mobile phone game based on that show, but no. I'm pretty sure that was a fairly popular cartoon, so seriously WTF!?
I’m pretty sure I’ve got a genesis gummi bear homebrew I got recently I’d have to check
Honestly my favourite part of this video is knowing I'm not the only one who has to reclaim discarded packaging to read the instructions.
every freakin' time.
The Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog looks an awful lot like the Game Gear Sonic the Hedgehog.
Because they're basically the same hardware expect one outputs a higher resolution and the other has a higher colour palette
You're killing it lately man! Keep em coming!
I've always thought it was a little unfortunate that after 1990 or so, the SMS mostly just got downgraded ports of MD/Gen games. It feels like that sort of robbed the SMS of its own identity, forever turning it into the Mega Drive's tagalong little brother.
The Master System 2 was my first console and had Sonic as the built in game. I was in the UK so we had a lot more PAL releases in to the 90’s
Speaking of one off Disney cartoons, imagine a Wuzzles game? My mind wonders what a beautiful colorful game that would’ve been. If only Capcom though.
ooh, would be amazing. Could even create your own combination or something.
Spellcaster was really popular at my school.
These systems are all over South America and the Caribbean. My aunt had one and we would play when we were there. I think they had Xevious? My memory is foggy. I still had one up until a few years ago when I gave it to a good friend of mine for his birthday.
No Xevious on SMS but there was Powerstrike which was a very good vertical scrolling shoot 'em up
Love that Mooney reference at the end there 😂
I just noticed Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom print lol
nossa, eu adoro o master! meu primeiro video game!
TecToy kept SEGA alive for so long.
@@JohnRiggs yes! they used to be the biggest! is really a pity how the gaming market has shrunk in brazil.
Since I only know about the Sega Master System since 2021 I thought Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit video game) was only was for the Sega game gear
Yessss the mickey mouse game was like a clone of ducktales.. the stage layouts the spiders dangling.. bouncin n treasure chests etc lol
The U.S. version of Captain Silver had levels and bosses removed.
Spell Caster is fun but the last level is great.
Some Genesis ports weren't as good but most it is cool to see what they were able to do with older tech.
Golden Axe Warrior is a great game. It's unfortunately rather costly.
Several Sonic games released on the Master System including Spinball. Interesting eh? lol
Hi John, thanks for the MS video! A great system. We love it in Europe too. my top 5 > Psycho Fox, Astérix awesome one, Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star and Castle Of Illusion. 👋 from France John, thx for your channel in general.
Whenever I think of 8 bit Sonic 1, I always think of the song of Bridge Zone
I love "post-new-console" releases! Always some tasty stuff that sometimes get less attention unfortunately.
What a trip! I grew up playing (if not owning) a ton of these games in New Zealand. Interestingly, Alex Kidd in Miracle World was replaced by Sonic 1 as the inbuilt game for the SMS2
loving this series!
In Europe, it was a great seller. I owned SMS 2 and a NES. The Master System had the better graphics but the NES had the better games.
The nes has a nice format it all blends together well especially av famicom model . I’m very much into homebrew and new ideas that are current to now not 30 years ago
I LOVE SEGA!!!!!
Was spellcaster based on a manga in Japan? Looks like one of those games like the Hokuto game being reworked as well.
Also I do appreciate whenever you leave the title screen of the game in the video so please do that more, thanks.
The late Makoto Ogino's "Kujaku-Oh" (Peacock King), to be precise. Its sequel Mystic Defender is based on that as well.
Speaking of which, I managed to put out a review of the latter just last year (#74)!
Not gonna lie, seeing Paperboy made me think...it would be amazing for someone to make Paperboy in VR
DUUUUDE~~! Absolutely.
Loved spellcaster. I was just thinking about it several days ago, couldnt remember the title. Thanks Riggs!
There was also a Sonic 2 for the Mater System as well
Psycho fox is the only one need to find , just to have the most slippery platformer in existence
With the SMS, the later games are clearly behind the MD. Not on the NES, which delivered excellent games outperforming the SNES deep into the nineties. Sega really stepped up with the MD. Nintendo failed to do so with the SNES, which was 90% about eye candy to hide the lack of CPU power. Most NES titles that run on SNES as well, are harder and have more happening on screen. I even dig the graphical style of the limited colour palette.
Strider on master system is by tiertex ..... that should tell you everything you need to know about it
Im mixed on this topic. I see why they did it though. The master system was hugely popular in europe and Brazil, smaller but sizable markets. So a lot of Genisis ports happened. Some good some not as good. Lol. I do give Sega credit for accommodating the world in that respect.
I love the Master System, I bought the 1st one I saw in person in 2011, never saw one before or since. And the game store I bought it from said it came in only 3 days before I got it.
So when the Master Everdrive came out, I went crazy putting SMS and SG-1000 roms on it, and the few patches for the small list of Game Gear games to work on an SMS color palette.
You MUST play Land of Illusion, it's better than SMS Castle of Illusion. It's one of the best 8-bit Disney games, period, it plays great, is unique, has cool mechanics/features not used in other games, it has a cool story, it's just a great game no one talks about. And don't spoil some of the mid game surprises if you plan to try it out, it's so fun to be surprised by the game.
Legend of Illusion is fun as well, but even more different than COI and LOI with a projectile weapon and vertical scrolling(very slow transition). Very much made for the Game Gear but plays fine on the SMS version.
And if you like Deep Duck Trouble, it actually kind of had a sequel come out years later, Donald Duck Goin' Quackers/Quack Attack on Game boy Color. The GBC game improved upon Deep Duck Trouble in every way, graphics are amazing for GBC, and you even have a double jump.
Last recommendation I'll do is Asterix and the Secret Mission. It's not mind blowing, but it's one of the best Asterix games I've played, it controls very well, hit detection feels good, and is one of the earliest games I can think of with a double jump.
Mickey Mouse is somewhere between Ducktales and Mario
Didn't know moonwalker was on megadrive
looks pretty good actually
I must have been one of those rare kids who didnt get a genesis and was still playing master system well into the genesis/snes generation. Sucked my parents were poor from buying their first home and i had to skip a console generation.
The MS version of Sonic the Hedgehog and the GG versions are actually the exact same. (As I understand, the GG was essentially just a portable MS that took a different size cartridge, so "conversions" were just a matter of putting the same rom on a different cartridge.)
You can actually run gg game roms on a master system with a few changes to code or some just work but the colours are not assigned like mega man works really well on sms
Spellcaster is the dogs bollocks, it's a bit of everything, and offers depth
The Master System Version of Sonic the Hedgehog is my favourite Version of that Game.
Just to let you know: Tec Toy has stopped Master System's manufacturing and game development in Brazil. As far as know, they're preparing a very promising new console called Zeenix (yes, a follow-up to Zeebo)!
Spellcaster was excellent!
About Paperboy I think one up arcades are a cool idea I don't own any but I did say to a few friends that if they came out with a paperboy with the handlebars I would be all in
Nice, Captain Silver is actually pretty fun
Don't you wish that everyone's SMS or Genesis in Brazil gets magically swapped into a Nintendo 64. So that development for Street Fighter 2 and Alpha 3 would continue.
I had a love hate relationship with Paperboy. I control a Paperboy. I get run over by a car, mauled by a dog, tripped by a street break dancer. Then not only do I get fired as a result, it makes front page news? Lawsuit!!! 😅
Psyco Fox came before Magical Flying Hat Turbo adventure and thus before that games Western remake Decapattack.
Wished there was a Sonic into Dreams, a Sonic the Hedgehog involving the world of Nights.
Wearing my MJ Smooth Criminal shirt and saw Moonwalker pop up very cool 😎😎
Had no idea that Sonic was on the master system... interesting
I can't believe you can't use the right phaser on dead angle. Did angle reminds me of a Master system game I've got called gangster town except you can actually use the light phaser on gangster town. Believe it or not I've actually found people where they said Alex Kidd in Shinobi world was their favorite
This is the best series
I think you've missed a few titles there.
Casino Games
Walter Payton Football
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing
Slap Shot
R.C. Grand Prix
Columns
Super Monaco GP
Joe Montana Football
Yeah, I didn't cover literally every game, just some.
hmm...I wonder if Kenseiden has anything to do with Spellcaster and Mystic Defender? Probably not but the gameplay looks spot on similar
1:04 wow that is some crappy hit detection
I loved psycho fox as a kid. Really good game
Golden axe warrior was fire
I loved Alex Kidd!! One of my favorite games back in the days.
Ya know when I was a kid I recognised that Janet Jackson had ripped off the melody and chords from master system sonic level 2 : bridge zone in her song "together again". I always wondered how she got away with it (it's note for note). Of course recently t came out that Michael was indeed composing at sega under a pseudonym on sonic 3, which now makes me wonder did they rip it, or was he writing for them much earlier?
I'd love to see SMS games come to Nintendo Switch Online
Personally, I like both Castle of Illusions and Sonic better on the Master System. They don't have the flashy graphics, but I prefer the level design, on the 8-bit versions.
I believe Brazil cut Master System support last year but either way talk about longevity
The master system version of Sonic The Hedgehog is rare. 😀👍🎮
There is a Russian Gummi Bears game for Genesis that I believe is a bootleg. Idk if it's any good, but I think Mike Matei streamed it a few years back
Little Samson in Metroid World
I could have sworn Rampage, with its red game case came out after Genesis was released, but that was not reality -just when my shop finally had a copy to buy. Convenience of the internet now to fact check my own reality 😊
I can literally see you thinking about the NES throughout this video lol! Am I wrong?
Couldtn find a captain silver that worked. For dear life, all the copies were glitched and didnt go beyond stage2.
Missed the other sonic games. Should have talked at least of Sonic Chaos, since that was the best version, at least for me. But a great series and video overall. And there are no new games for Master System on Brazil, belive it or not. xD
Indeed you wanna talk brazil this thing's gonna be at least an hour long LOL! Pretty sure I never played any of these I likely went back to the NES after the initial few games, then moved onto the SNES/Genesis. Also I *thought* SMS Strider was US GOLD, but turns out it's Tiertex? Guess that would still explain a lot, haha.
Spider -man in color❤
The Sonic games on the Master System DO have the sequels on the Master System! 🤨
Only the Game Gear has Triple Trouble.
00:19 Yeah a Brazillion times Yes!!! The Xbox 360 and PS3 generation was beginning, and I was playing Alex Kidd and my aunt house with my cousin
Power Rangers Time Force 🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠
I guess Blanka was a big fan of the SMS
I never made the comparison between Castle of Illusion and Duck Tales but good point. It's surprising to see that a lot of those games are among the best on the console, despite that the rest are downgraded versions of Genesis games. 😅
In my opinion Sonic on the master system was the best version of Sonic period. In fact I have it on its box
Why would you think up something so wonderful as that hypothetical Gummi Bears game and release it into the world knowing the longing it would induce in the rest of us? We were so content in our ignorance...
Oh well, video also showed us funny classic localization (bowl of spaghetti indeed) so I still liked and commented.
