Golden Axe Warrior is the rarest SMS game in NTSC regions. It was released in mid-1991, less than a year before the console was discontinued, and by some accounts was only available for a few months and less than 100,000 cartridges were made (and probably much less than that number were sold in stores).

I owned lots more enduro racer, safari hunt, hang on, ghostbusters, great football, tennis, etc. I even had a few of the little cartridges. This brings back so many memories. I want to buy one for my kids sometime soon. I owned all Segas no Nintendo’s. I had Master system, Genesis, Saturn, every PlayStation 1-4. I still own every PlayStation but I really want a Master System an Genesis again. I have a local store with Master Systems an good selection of games. I forgot pro wrestling, I wore that game out.

Ys was named after a legendary sunken city in the region of Bretagne in France, similar to the myths of Atlantis. Funny thing is, I started playing the series with Ys 7 and that's when I first heard of the legend. And I apparently grew up like 50 kilometers away from the supposed location of Ys, lol. It was near the city of Quimper but I had absolutely never heard of that story before the games. Even in France, it's a super obscure legend.

I still remember seeing a dragon from Phantasy Star in one of the original Sega Master System commercials, and basically creaming my pants. I HAD to have that game. It took a lot of wheelin' and dealing with a kid up the block for me and my friend to get ahold of a copy, but it was all worth it. The shear excitement was overwhelming, we were completely mesmerized playing it. My #1 fave as well. I love hearing game nostalgia stories. I grew up with the Master System. All my friends had either the NES or SNES, and we always "battled" on how Sega was better vs. Nintendo consoles. I remember arguing even on SMS vs. SNES with my neighbor. But when we forgot about the arguments, we always had a super blast when playing the SMS at my basement. My favorites were Transbot, Psycho Fox, Sonic, Asterix, the built in Alex Kidd, and Double Hawk. Oh boy, did we play Double Hawk... We would run out into the woods and play war against imaginary enemies with either plastic guns or wooden sticks after playing the game for hours on end. The SMS has so many great games, it's a pity it seems only the Genesis/Megadrive is seeing any recognition at this time.

I had the Master System as a kid, too. I got one for Christmas one year, and got the NES the next year. My dad had a nephew who was already in his 30s when I was a kid, and he had a house with a "secret door" in the wall. When you went in the door, there was a man cave, and he had a Master System in there. I remember thinking that was so cool that it made my brothers and I want a Master System (this explains why I had a Master System in the USA, when most kids had the NES). For that reason, I have equal nostalgic memories for both consoles, but I agree with HCG, as I always thought the Master System had better graphics and sound than the NES did. I think the NES is the better system overall though, but they're both cool in their own right!

I had a Master System despite it not being popular here in the US. I probably found about about the NES around the same time as it seemed everyone I knew was still on Atari up to that point. And I also loved the Master System. When I went to friends' houses, we enjoyed Nintendo, and I'd get one of those later, and they'd enjoy the Master System at my house. I had fun with a lot of the games I had. Shinobi, Double Dragon, and Rastan were among my favorites that I played again and again. I've come to realize that I like the Master System library more than the NES library prior to late 1990 or 1991. Most of the NES games I like were later releases, with some exceptions, of course.

Master System was our first system. I remember me and my older brother getting it for Christmas in 1991 when I was 6 years old. We got Alex Kidd built in to the system and Sonic and it was amazing. We never got too many games like you showed here but we rented quite a few from blockbuster video. I remember Carmen Sandiego was a unique type of game we tried. It's an underrated system. Like you it started my lifelong love of videogames and it will always be special for that

The Master System was my first console. I asked for it and got it for Christmas of 1988. I wanted the system for 2 games specifically, Space Harrier and Alien Syndrome, which were the very first games I got for the system.
I was a hardcore Sega fan from the Space Harrier arcade game, and just thought the idea of playing the game at home was the most incredible thing to do.
Now obviously it wasn't a perfect port but damn if I didn't still love it and play the hell out of it.
To this day I am so glad I got this system as it introduced me to what the JRPG genre. Long before Dragon Warrior OR Final Fantasy. And yes it is number one for me as well.
My full list in no particular order is....of games I actually played mind you. (Never played Y's....YET!!!)
    Space Harrier
    Golvellius
    Golden Axe Warrior
    Wonderboy III the Dragons Trap
    Miracle Warrior
    R-Type
Double Dragon (2- Player co-op...as intended thank you very much!)
    Dragon Crystal
    Master of Darkness
And of course Phantasy Star! (It's certainly number 1...for the record)
I'm right there with you on Phantasy Star as well. Phantasy Star is also what introduced me to video games that went beyond basic video game design of beat the level, go the the next level with 3 lives, and scores. I never had a computer,(which had always had big rpg/adventure games) so I never played anything like it before.
The main video games I had access to up to that point were arcade style games.
It made me fall in love with the game that drops you off and says, find you way. Find items to get stronger, explore an the open world, go where you want(or at least where you think you can),
It's not only my no.1 Master System Game, it's in my top 5 games EVER! Along with Legend Of Zelda, Demon's/Dark Souls, Metroid Prime, and Castlevania Symphony of the Night. All games I re-play at least once a year. If I could only play 5 games for the rest of my life, these 4 along with Phantasy Star would easily be my games for life. And no surprise look how my top 5 games all share similar game design in that they're all quasi open world, and you have to explore, find new weapons and items, backtrack to areas with new items, get your characters stronger as the game continues. Some are more RPG than others, but the mainframe is the same.

I've actually been able to collect 2 sealed copies of Phantasy Star for my video game collection over the years. Always like to try get a sealed copy on my favorite games, just to have the newest copy possible in my collection.
And I still have my original copy that I had to order from the Sears catalog too. I'm quite proud of that =)

(Regarding Golvellius)The style of Compile's games' graphics and music has always been compelling to me, it's really unique and kind of eerie, really. My fave from them is Guardian Legends.

Omg Alex Kidd in High Tech World.... I never got the last piece of the map needed to leave the castle as a kid. Many many years later I replayed with an internet FAQ and I’ll never forget where that last piece is until the day I die.

hey thanks, I'm just going through some old titles to try and emulate on the "Mini" and I added all of these. It's funny, I had a friend Richard who had one of these too! I still have the power base converter so I can play these on my Genesis when I can find them.

Wish I was 9 again playing the Sega Master System at my friends house. I had an Atari til I was 8, finally got a NES, and got the Genesis when I was 13. My family didn't have a lot of money so I tended to get consoles when they were near the end of their run.
