    I remember the first time I played Gears of War on my Xbox 360 and saying out loud, "This is the future I dreamed about!" That was the biggest graphics leap I had seen since the jump from Snes to N64 and it was mind blowing!

      +DreamcastGuy While I can certainly say the same about GoW, it kinda hurts to look back at the path this game forged for AAA development. But heck, back then, everything about the game made my jaw drop.

      yeah it looks a bit dated today but it was a huge leap graphically over what I was used to on ps2 and original XBOX, not to mention a great co-op game, played through the entire game at least 3 times with split screen co-op.

    The best reason to own an Xbox 360 is for the mostly exclusive shmup library (especially since they were all released only for that console at the time) with Cave's games, Raiden Fighters Aces, Bullet Soul, Eschatos, Ginga Force, and the Shooting Love trilogy. Also, many cool Xbox Live Arcade games like Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Virtual-On: Otomari Tangram, Rez, and many others; even Xbox Live Indie Games had some quality titles.

    • @PrinceDavid
      @PrinceDavid Před 8 lety +3

      +PinMike Great shmups on the 360, I love Cave. Unfortunately not all the Japanese games were region free but some are! At least Cave is pushing out releases onto Steam now. The Raiden games are also excellent on there. In Japan this was THE niche system for shmup fans.

    • @Ponimaju
      @Ponimaju Před 8 lety +1

      +PinMike Definitely a good reason - there are some region free retail shmups too from Japan and Europe. Quite a few decent JRPGs too though some like Star Ocean or Eternal Sonata got enhanced rereleases on the PS3 eventually anyway.

    Dear HCG,
    Since early 2009, I have watched your show religiously. I have never missed a video, never missed a moment. When I was first getting into your show, I would even go through your archive and watch all of the videos on your channel, and I have to tell you...there is a true atmosphere to what you are doing. I can feel the presence of a true love for gaming when I watch your videos, and it emits through and strengthens my enthusiasm for gaming even more. I have been a gamer my whole life, but truth be told...your show has amplified my love for video games immensely, and I can only thank you for that, sir. I have watched you and Rob so much that I almost feel like both of you are old friends in a way. As odd as it may seem, when I watch your videos, I don't just feel like I'm watching a youtube video, I feel like I'm hanging with friends and talking about the world's greatest hobby that we all have been blessed with loving, video games! That's the power of your show, my friend! Thank you for the years of awesomeness, and never stop! Game on!
    Sincerely,
    Your Fan

    Man, I've had some seriously good times with friends on the 360. Playing Halo 3, Halo Reach, Dead Rising, and Tales of Vesperia (the game that got me into the Tales series) will always be one of my best gaming memories. Also I think it's really cool you're speaking of Lost Odyssey so highly because that game deserves more love, I'm currently on the last disk and the game has made me cry more than once.

    I love the 360. I still remember when Mass Effect 2 came out, one of my favorite games of all time. It was actually exclusive to the 360 for it's whole first year, and Mass Effect 1 had nearly 4 years of exclusivity. My two favorite JRPGs of the 7th gen were exclusive to it, Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia. Gears and Oblivion showed me that the 7th generation was truly here. Plus, many of my buddies were on Xbox Live, so online play with them left a lasting impression with me. I loved my PS3 for a lot of my great single player experiences, and I've always been a PlayStation guy (still am). But the 360 will always mean a lot to me :)

  • @adamdam
    @adamdam Před 8 lety

    Exactly what you said Johnny, Before Oblivion I was still playing Final Fantasy and other JRPGs on my PS1/PS2 and one day I ended up at a friends house for a band practice, he was playing oblivion...loaded his game, on a cliff edge with his horse over looking the vista and my mind was blown..I did dabble with Morrowind prior on my laptop but never had the chance to get going in that as my laptop broke.
    But shortly after that, the elder scrolls series became a new kind of open adventure experience that I fell in love with, So many games are doing it now...the amazement has worn off because of it, but like Oblivion and more so, Skyrim blew my mind. I'm the next in the series will be nothing short of perfection.

I actually plan on getting one on the cheap to play lost odyssey, maybe blue dragon if I'm really desperate for Jrpgs. That's sadly one thing the sony totally borked for their ps3 for me. If it wasn't for FROM and level 5 there would be zero decent jrpgs to play unless you wanted to buy rereleases or remakes of classic ps1 titles.

    Crazy it's been 10 years. I remember holding out thinking I would get a PS3. When the PS3 ended up being $600 with no real games to speak of, it was easy to make the 360 my console of choice mid 2007, with Gears of War being my first game (I too played it on an old CRT!). It's crazy to think that the 360 I have is so old it doesn't even have HDMI out, and wasn't an issue when I got it! Great decade for a great console.

    I have so many nostalgic memories of the Xbox 360. I remember being blown away by the graphics when I first saw Viva Pinata (which looks like a decent mobile game by today's standards). But at the end of the day the best thing about the 360 was Xbox Live. It was my first experience playing online games. It made it so goddamn easy. The Xbox 360 was known for Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Fable and Oblivion. It also had other great games such as, Forza, Project Gotham Racing, Crackdown, Burnout Revenge, Condemned Criminal Origins, Splinter Cell Conviction, Ace Combat 6 Fires of Liberation, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Raiden IV, Akai Katana, Deathsmiles, Dodonpachi Resurrection, Mushihimesama Futari, Espgaluda II, Kameo Elements of Power, The Witcher 2, Xbox 360 Triple Pack (Limbo, Trials HD and Splosion Man), Namco Museum Virtual Arcade, Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead. That doesn't even include the cross platform games that were available for the system. For a game console to last 10 years is a testament to its longevity, success and popularity.

    "because when you see it you turn 360 degrees and moonwalk away"

      +Shinjiro Aragaki Even as a non-fanboy I felt the jokes were kind of deserved because the name of the console was so ridiculous. Why 360? Did this number have some meaning unknown to us? Or did the designers just throw out a random number that they thought sounded cool..?
      The Xbox One isn't something else too. Wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft's next console is the "Xbox 139284-2" or something like that.. whoever is coming up with the names for Microsoft's consoles needs to be fired

    the older you get man the faster time flies...
    One early memory I had was Project Gotham Racing on 360...flying around with amazing graphics, changing the camera angle on your car in a snap, awesome tunes playing, I said Wow this is next gen. Because at first there was a lot of question if 360 was truly next gen or maybe Xbox 1.5.
    Probably the next most mind blowing was Gears of War, the first mind blowing 360 graphics.
    And hah! I played 360 on a SD TV at first too. I think everybody did. In fact honestly I think 360 was one of the big drivers of HDTV adoption early on. Cause a lot of people and myself included got their first HDTV mainly for Xbox 360 use first. I had my 360 and I just knew I needed a HDTV to full take advantage of it.

    I finally got another 360 after finding the latest model for $90 with a bunch of games at a pawn shop this summer. I haven't had a working 360 since I gave up on the console in frustration way back in early 2009 when I switched to the ps3. I have been enjoying buying a ton of games for the system the past few months. I've already got 30+ games and I haven't paid over $5 for any of them. Lot of great classics but most have been coming to steam the past few years. Still to this day I consider Resonance of Fate, Bayonetta, Red Dead Redemption, Gears of War, and Vanquish as the greatest experiences of this past HD generation (360/ps3).

I have about 50 games for it (not many exclusives for it that I liked), but I really, really loved the era from 2006-2009 on the console, with the initial "Blade Dashboard" and the amazing lineup of XBLA games from 2007-2009. It felt like a great continuation from the original Xbox (which is still my favorite console of the three Xbox's; mainly because of the SEGA lineup in the first two years).

    Halo 3 and Gears for sure! Probably my two favorite shooters for online of all time. Custom games in Halo 3 with 16 players was the most fun I've ever had playing an online game. Bioshock is an absolute favorite (Bioshock 2 had a crappy story mode but the online was really cool). Fallout 3 was incredible. Xbox live arcade had some gems like Castle Crashers (super fun co-op). They didn't come out at launch, but three of my favorite fighters of all time were on 360: MK9, Street Fighter 5 and MvC 3.

    I did not get a 360 until 2008. I bought one for JRPGs at the time. My favorite game on the 360 was Tales of Vesperia. The game was awesome. I eventually sold the 360 because I did not have time for three consoles. Most of the games I wanted to play on 360 were either on PS3 or were coming out shortly. I also bought Ninja Gaiden 2 and Eternal Sonata. Both of these games eventually came to PS3 as well. I planned to play Star Ocean 4 as well, but I never got around to it. This game also came to PS3. I would not say my time with the 360 was a waste. I had fun playing Street Fighter 4 with a friend online. I am not into multiplayer that much, so I never was interested in playing Halo or Gears of War. Hopefully you do a PlayStation 3 video next year. That system is extremely underrated.

    What I remember most about the 360's launch was the commercials, because beyond that I ignored the system. I was always in the PlayStation and Nintendo camp. My mom eventually bought a 360 to play a few Kinect games like The Black Eyed Peas Experience once and immediately forget all about them. I played a few non-Kinect titles though, and nowadays I have a better appreciation for Xbox.

      @goldenheartOh Před 8 lety

      +sockpuppet187 That's one of the greatest IMO. No game comes close to the immensely satisfying, visceral feel it gave the player, mainly due to the intense sounds. You could practically feel the sting from the golf club, or the impact of the sledge hammer. The amazing variety of items that could be used as weapons was great too. Add to that a great sense of humor in a dark situation & it's just one great game all around.
      Plus, there was the side puzzle feature called "Try to understand the finicky whiners who don't like this awesome game ONLY because they can't do everything thing they want in a single play through; never mind the fact they really enjoy it otherwise and can do everything they want to do on multiple play throughs, which is how the game was designed to be played."

    i look through that xbox 360 pile ... and i think i have all the same games. If not now, at least i had them at some point. Theres some 'good' stuff in there.
    And yet for some reason, the whole xbox 360 period of gaming felt like such a joyless time. It felt like the true manifestation of american values, rather than the toy-like fantasy of the primarily japanese generations of consoles before it. I feel like this is where we see a real shift of games as a medium trying to be taken seriously for a particular kind of person. War and simulation through the lens of realism, funneled into a kind of sport, driven by a kind of grittiness and immersion in horror that frankly, upon completion of many of these games, didnt leave me feeling like i'd had a particularly fun time.
    I felt like i was always being impressed my ambition, by spectacle, by intensity of emotion. But those emotions for me always felt closer to fear and terror than they felt towards joy and laughter.
    For me Nintendo occupies very squarely the 'fun' part, honestly so much so though i actually find its lack of edge or real world conerns as being something very unrelatable. There for me is *too* much reliance on all-out escapism in Nintendo. Xbox 360 swings hard the other way, where I feel like it tried very hard to be taken seriously at the expense of a truly bouyant atmosphere.
    For me, Playstation sits nicely in the middle of these two extremes and thats why I love it. I would include Neo Geo too if they were still around. What i mean by this is that Neo Geo typifies, for me, the sweet spot - bold colours, striking designs, fun gamefeel, and its settings are things that feel still somewhat rooted in our world - 80s dystopias, real world vehicles in backgrounds, sex appeal, explosions. I want my games to feel magical exaggurations of the real world, and for some reason Microsoft brough in a kind of dourness that I will never forgive them for.
