- In this video I try out a set of really cheap blow off valves to replace my stock plastic diverter valves on my 2008 BMW 335i.
This video includes sound clips and installation instructions.
Keep in mind that the exact valves I installed in this video are holding boost, if you want to try this on your car and you're on a budget then I'd recommend the exact valves that are linked in this video's description. They can be really hit and miss.
You can get the valves here (affiliate):
amzn.to/2SKMMYW
Or here for a few bucks more if Amazon is out of stock:
ebay.to/2GDaFg8
If this is the first video you're seeing of mine consider subscribing, I upload regularly.
Thanks for watching! When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!
I bought these diverter valves and I am really impressed with them, much better than the Synapse piece of crap that came on my car that was causing a huge boost leak. Got a Burger Motorsports charge pipe for diverter valves and I'm SO MUCH HAPPIER. I ended up going to the auto parts store and asked the guy behind the counter if I could take some pre-molded 1" heater hose from their stock to my car in the parking lot to sorta "mock up" the hoses in my car to get two that were bent perfectly for my needs and I ended up finding two hoses that fit perfectly back to the inlets. Thanks man, really appreciate your work. Also got those HID bulbs you ordered... I'm very skeptical on those, but I guess we'll see.
Got these for my car and have been running them for a few months. No complaints
How many turns of spring preload do you run them?
Can't wait to see what u get out the turbos waiting to buy a set .... Keep up the good work
Yea same. These DVs do have issues though. I've discovered there are a couple. I've bought a pair of these myself...
One of them you can witness in the video; the turbo flutter you hear during blow off from low throttle. It's compressor surge, which at the least leads to worse transient response than venting properly to atmosphere altogether; surge slows the turbos down abruptly. At worse it's reducing the life on those new upgraded turbos. It appears that getting proper purge when running aftermarket DVs or BOVs requires larger than stock ID boost/vac lines, and a boost/vac line adapter like the kit BMS sells. That and him minimizing the spring tension will sort everything out.
The internal construction is decent and seems robust. It's important to note that there are a total of 3 o-rings (two inside creating seals around the brass piston, one outside for the cap seal), all which will occasionally need replacing. But the other issue is the large roughly 1/32 total gap between the piston and the valve body wall above the blow off section. The piston is not guided to to stay centered in the valve body; can tilt laterally back and forth which will cause premature wear to the piston and inside lining as it oscillates between top and bottom position. I'm in the process of designing a collard, and a spacer ring to both hold the collar in place and keep the cap/spring compression the same position for both DV's. After these modifications these things should prove bulletproof.
@@PHY51C15T Question any progress with modding the setup..?
@@PHY51C15T Low rpm compressor surge is nothing to worry about
I replaced mine with a set that also said they were for vw and repurposed my dv lines as well. They fit and work flawlessly. Mines dont make any cool sounds like yours though maybe cause my tune only up to 18 psi boost. Great video man
Layne 335is RKX dv?
Gonna hop on this too. Just ordered mine after watching your video
How many turns of spring preload do you run them?
The spring on the diverter valves are supposed to match the vacuum the engine is pulling at idle, not the boost pressure under load. Try lighter springs. 5-10 psi
Sold out on Amazon, just looked. Hope they come back and don't raise the price.
Im one of the viewer's that dont got infinit doe. Thanks for the video!!
Did my install yesterday without any issues. The diverter valves are good quality. Reused the stock diverter hard lines and kept my setup in recirculating mode. Thanks again for the DIY's
Do you have an aftermarket chargepipe?
@@iBryaaannnn yes, I have the VRSF charge pipe... replaced the lower charge pipe with the ARM silicon hose upgrade that runs down to my ARM intercooler
@@richardaguirre3719 I suppose I have to buy an aftermarket chargepipe to get this to work then, bummer
@@iBryaaannnn it'll work on the stock charge pipe as well
@@richardaguirre3719 how so? The stock cp has that locking mechanism?
Thanks for doing this mod i'd seen these on Amazon didn't know if they'd work. My biggest concern was the vaccum line being a larger diameter on the valve was hesitant that it would work. After watching this i'll give it a go except i will just vent to atmosphere and cap the lines. By doing this on my application it will be super easy to just pop on the stock one for smog as i live in Ca.
Sammy James unless you have a catch can it will likely shoot hot oil into the engine bay
Great video thank you for the idea of repurposing those line im on stock boost but it helped my low boost issue is completly gone they cost $63.85 after tax and shipping but well well worth it makes the same sounds yours does not quite as loud but still same great crisp sound
Haha i got the exact same ones half a year ago. Havent had any issues this far :)
do you keep it on the hardest/tightest setting? if you do, what map/psi do you run?
Awesome video mate! Really enjoy watching your video's 🎥👍
Look forward to see how you get along with the new turbo's!
I recently purchased a 335 and in the process of going FBO (all VRSF pcs), considering swapping the turbo's out after finishing all the breathing upgrades.
I have always had good luck with the cheaper BOV/DV valves. I disassemble them and polish the plungers with some WD40 and 1200 grit so that they glide smoothly against the O'rings.
Sounds badass. Hope they make an N55 turbo.
N54 diverter valves work different, they rely on manifold pressure to open while these open from both manifold pressure and pressure in the charge pipe that will push against the spring.
Thank you , bought using your link :)
How many turns of spring preload do you run them?
Can we get a status update on these?
Love your content ! forsure one of the best n54 channels out here ! keep up the great work man !
Your video still caters to me even though I paid 22k for my 335is lol
22k geez lmao
@@alexs3958 I mean it'# in marker
heck ya i just got me a 08 335i first bmw i always hated them then i worked on one and took it for a test drive and changed my mine i bought it off the customer on the spot.
That's great news. When I get our e93 335i I will be prepared👌🏻
I’m happy with my vrsf chargepipe and HKS blow off valve 🥰
Hi everyone, I just want to ask how to adjust them properly? Does it really matter for the boost or its just for the sound?
"it doesn't look that ghetto" lol
tbh it kinda sounds like compressor surge, my n54 sounded exacly the same when i had comp surge issues, maybe the bov is just set too tight
I agree, under low throttle in particular
Top content as usual!!! Thanks
Why'd you go with that instead of an AliExpress special? $100 AL chargepipe, couplers and everything with a hks Ssqv
Thats what I have on my e92 single turbo build and holds boost at any pressure
Alex Mercado yep. Same exact shit. Came with the manual and everything. It's legit. Just straight from manufacturer. Selling slightly cosmetically defective parts.
I had the charge pipe but that's useful info for anyone that reads your comment.
Adam Humble do you have the link to the item listing?
Yooo link please
any one have a link for the blow off valve?
I want to get a charge pipe and was hoping you had something like this with a diy bov and a charge pipe instead of the plastic stock setup
Who stepped on the mouse?
So these are indeed operating as diverter valves and not blow-off valves venting to the engine compartment?
Have you ever upgraded the PCV fitting to the valve cover and increased the diameter of the hose?
Nice totorial. I bet these work fairly well.
Why didn't you just vent them to atmosphere? That platform doesn't use a MAF, so it wouldn't be a problem; plus it sounds Waaaaay better!... I had Turbosmart, sound amazing. But the tial knockoffs on Ebay are also good guys, and they are only about $30-40. No need to spend much on BOV's...
Yeah for now just to tone done the noise a bit, its pretty loud now.
Great content. You’ve really helped with my 535i. Did these hold up? Are you still running them. I need a new set set of DV’s. Car is stock, will these work?
yes , Bought these from amazon for around $25 each and got them in the mail yesterday, still research abought hoses though but about to go out and tackle it. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MCWSWJ5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 thats the ones ,they just went up on price.
The link doesn't work anymore what are they called or how can I find them thanks
I just received these and they feel super robust and quite simple in design. Yours are all the way hard for your new turbos but how many twists away from Hard would you recommend if I'm just running Stage 2+ on factory Snails with Mhd? No e85. Thank you
Did you figure this out? Ordered today
Would you recommend this over a cheap vband style single BOV set up? Great work!
Whats even the purpose of even changing diverter valves . Does it give u more hp? Or just for that sound it makes?
Great content bro! Diverter Valves still in good shape ?
Thanks! Yeah they've impressed me. Holding boost still.
That's what it's all about. On a budget and DIY. That's what makes your channel different. I would have went that route if I didnt get a good price on a chargepipe with a tial flange. So I went with a tial knockoff. I know a knockoff but I can't see spending $300.
Sounds crisp also! I know how 18.5 psi sounds I bet 26 sounds insane in person.
Thanks! Yeah its super loud, one of the reasons I wanted to plumb it back into the intake.
You're welcome! yeah, for sure. Definitely user preference when it comes to DB level. I've become addicted to the turbo noises haha. Tho I also have straight piped exhaust with 1792 Vibrant resonators on my E60. Not as loud as you think (unless dme 3100 with wastegates open haha) and actually get a lot of turned heads and praise for a nice sound. But I believe you are stock exhaust besides downpipes right? So you prefer to keep it quiet.
@@VehicularDIY Might want to set the spring tension on the DV's closer to the minimum required to hold your boost target though... www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1041994&highlight=turbosmart&page=5
Bought the ones that just dump straight out, they work fine but im getting compressor surge or some form of fluttering at the lower RPM's (2000ish).
WOT is fine with no fluttering, but I noticed that even with both of the springs at the tightest setting or lined up on looser settings the air is being released out of sync. Upon further inspection I noticed the flaps on one of the units is lined up with the horn exit but on the other its hidden to the side.. not sure if this is the cause but quality control clearly isn't the best.
But eh, 78$ canadian for the pair.. not bad.
Gurji Jheeta loosen them up
I had those BOVs and after 10months the inside O ring that seals the piston gets chewed up and the bovs start leaking boost. I do not recomend this. You better go with china tial 50mm bov I am running it for a year without any problems.
Thanks for the feedback. So far they're holding up but I'll definitely report back if anything changes.
U have upgrade ur 50mm bov vacuum line from 1/8 to 1/4?
How did you remove the hose from the stock diverter valves!? I’ve tried heat gun and that doesn’t seem to work
Do you know the size of the larger vacuum line of the two that comes with the BOV kit? (by size i mean the inner diameter?) thanks
Price went up on Amazon, but check ebay, search Ryanstar blow off valve 25mm, I found them for $18.42/ea.
You’re a life saver found them💯🙌🏽
Got them installed & they work well but I’m getting that flutter “stu stu stu “ sound having them as stiff as I can? Any idea?
*btw ordered them with your link :) *
Would making them softer make more blow off noise ? Or you have to make them harder ?
Looking forward to the info on the new turbos..
Yeah as soon and my tune is dialed in.
@@VehicularDIY what are your thoughts on the stage 3 turbos they sell for 500 more? I have an auto as well looking at the same whp goals as yours. Is it worth it or not really needed?
Did upgrade those again Lately? If you did can make video for it
What type of sparkplugs and coil packs do you use in your car since you started to up the performance?
1. Before the turbo upgrade? And 2. After the turbo upgrade?
Thanks in advance
Running NGK one step plugs and new oem coils for now.

done accordingly to this video. it works flawlessly. does it work also, if we fix the DV following the stock orientation?
Yes I have it plumbed that way.
Its a universal blow off ventil yes but cane you juse it on a bmw 316i e46 W’et out turbo on
I notice you have active steering any videos about the problems we have?
Hey brother are you still rocking this set up on your N54 with the VRSF charge pipe? I’m trying to debate on the charge pipe made for the diverter valves and then doing this set up or do a more single blow off valve with a different charge pipe.
Hey, yeah I am still using these. They've been holding up fine.
@@VehicularDIY Thank you for getting back to me Boss! Killer work on your DIYs. Just did my Oil Pan, Water pump, Thermostat and Transmission housing/oil after watching your content!💪🏻 Thank you 🙏🏻 2010 e92 335i 133k
Can someone please tell me what can make the vacuum line that came with the kit “really bad” ?
They don't blow off entirely into the atmosphere, some of the gasses recirculate back into the intake so this is a 50/50 setup? That is also adjustable? like 80/20ish? Seems like it's preferred to eliminate turbo lag...What is you take? You know what I mean?
Technically all the gasses are plumbed back into the intake but given the close proximity to the air filters some would escape from there.
Do you have any updated link, please? The OG link in description doesn't work

Diverter valve is wrong position installed?
Isn't it best to do away with the dv & get a single BOV? I'm new to the engine, so trying to learn the best way.
I am also new to the N54, after talking with some friends, it seems either is fine. I think the higher psi, the worse stock diverter valves are. Most of my friends with N54 go single BOV with higher boost and it sounds cool. Doesn't affect the car in anyway since it is MAP controlled vs. MAF.
Still running these?
Do you know if this will work with the N55?
how did you adjust it? hard or soft?
Just got it installed, what plumbing settings do you recommend between 10-12 psi? Currently I have it 4 turns from the the hardest setting.
What turn setting did you land on and how much boost are you running?
Hey man . Great videos . I run turbo smart race port. Not the 2 diverter valves . Can u explain the difference and or benefits of doin ur way instead of one raceport bov?
Thanks man

Yeah basically the price.

Thanks . I didn’t know if I was gonna do any harm taking the stock divertors off.
Appreciate the reply v much . I own 2011 335is dct btw .
Keep up Awsome videos .
Its all for tha contennntttt homie
Is that custom map for 26psi?
Why not vent to atmosphere?
How did you get those repurposed OEM divertor hoses off the valves? I tried the heat gun and it turns only. I don’t want to over heat but it won’t pull off.
I had to really muscle it to get them off. Turn and pull hard at the same time.
Thanks. I tried hulk mode but it broke off. No problem since it broke cleanly with the correct length. Those cheap bovs work for now. $37 a pair, a month later from Asia.
Unrelated - My SOS and seatbelt light are on. My entry level Autel scanner can't communicate with the instrument cluster's safety restraint module nor passenger seat module. Can't read those codes, erase or do live data. No crash, but n54 was stored for a year and barely started (coughed and kicked). Does this mean modules need to be reset by a pro, or do i get replacements and code them?
