N52 for reliability, N54 for power and N55 for a decent mix of both
Facts my girl n52 got 232k miles đ
What are your thoughts on the B58?
working on a B58 video đ
@@user-ce3wx7lw7psheesh
@Jus_Goody the b58 is starting to have thier issues as well! The B58 is the new n54, sort of..
Keep in mind the N54 has been around for almost 20 years already !!!! The b58 is young, but all engines will have issues over 20 years.
come on dawg N52...all the way...if your cost conscious like me. I'm still fast and light...Full bolts on, 6MT, Supercharged...and heavily reliable
Iâd love to pick your brain on the supercharger, do you have an insta?
sadly FBO on an N52 gets you stock power of a N54 minus 5Hp. for about $4000
@@AndrewNichols that is more than enough for people who just want a clean daily that doesnât have n54 problems
supercharged and reliable?
@@lousehassleyes but put $4k into an n54 IN JUST MAINTENANCE and it will last just as long
N52 all day.
300k mile N54 in a E90 335i, love it, do your maintainince.
thatâs amazing! do you have it tuned or running factory power?
N54 almost 200k miles.
Thatâs awesome to hear. I never actually see high power high milage BMWs on CZcams other then that 335i on mishas page. It makes me happy to know Iâll have my 75k mile n54 for a long timeđ
8 waterpumps later⊠I own one trust me I know
I have a 2008 135i convertible with 153k miles and no issues :) just do your maintenance that's all and yeah if you don't work on cars probably is gonna be expensive but parts aren't expensive but the labor it is but if you do it yourself you'll save money and also you know your car is in good shape
I own a 2009 X5 N52 and i freaking love it.... all i had to do was replace the valve cover and valve cover gaskets, manifold gaskets, O2 sensors, VVT Solenoids, Transmission pan and filter, new belt, lower radiator hose, AC line because my old belt broke and snapped the rubber part of the line. And regular maintenance stuff...This is the best vehicle with currently 241,000 miles and still going
Iâm also at 241K miles!
Got a 08 about to supercharge it sooner or later .. got to do my crankcase position sensor in the morning and replace my ccv valve on the valve cover and Iâm good to go .. Iâm at 178,000 miles roughly .. I hate this damn 6 speed zf transmission it sucks lol this n52 would shine so much better if we had the zf 8 speed transmission like the older 2011 35i models got
Love my M135i. Running a stage 2+ 400hp N55 in a hatchback.
While still getting 1/16km op the freeway.
Those hatches are the dream. So bad they never made it to America.
Owned all three absolutely love all of them video definitely does their descriptions justice
Great video bro, enjoyed watching it
Great video, thank you for sharing!
I have a 2016 built N55 with MPPK approaching 120k mi and only problems to dates have been water pump, thermostat & valve cover gasket. The original valve cover gasket lasted 115k mi. Been quite reliable and still pulls hard.
please look at what 4n motorsport did to an n55
This was a very well done video. As a big car guy but not the biggest BMW guy, this was informative
thank you brotha!
N52 all day! Thanks for the vid bro!
N52 gang. Reliable even with aftermarket performance mods had 3 n52 and have had very little problems with them mostly just basic maintenance stuff
Except them damn carrier bearings now running jxb best $300 ever spent on it
Had all 3 n52s are my favorite to daily tho
240,000 miles and still going strong đ«Ą

My parents gave me as a gift from college the E92 330i 2009. I swap my bmw with my father for a SUV since I have two daughters and a year ago, my little boy was born. That being said, my father gave me back my bmw with only 55,000kms. First it was mine, then my father, now mine again, and then my boy.
I am now making my build on the car, and been changing and making it look badass again! I owned 3 years ago, the E92 V8 M3. Loved it, however I didn't like the weight of the engine and sold it twice the money I paid for it. Now I am enjoying so much my 330i and I feel like a little kid again! BEST ENGINE N52! No problems at all!! Amazing and nice video brother. Thank you!
đđ
I have a 2013 535i m sport n55 that has catted downpipe, VRSF intercooler, Valvetronic remote exhaust, MHD stage 2+ tune, XHP transmission tune, and will pull any 550i any day. Just hit 100k miles, and my only failure has been a water pump, and that really didn't even fail, but it was going because my fan would run more often.
What I'm saying is I drive the crap out of this car daily and it's without a doubt been the most dependable vehicle I've ever owned. Not to mention I've always been a Mustang guy..
That said, the n55 to me is that sweet spot..
Nice video! Thanks
How much power do you put down?
3 pulls 2 months ago on the dyno with a best of 351hp and 411tq at the wheels @19.5 psi. Also that's running e30. It's a very healthy motor on the stock turbo. Still gets 30ish mpg highway. Iam considering a Dorch stage 2.5 hpfp, but can't decide on either a Pure stage 1, or stage 2 turbo upgrade. Since it's my daily driver I may just go Pure stage 1 and call it a day. I believe going stage 1 on the stock hpfp will definitely get me at or just above the 400whp on 93 octane..
That to me is the sweet spot. Also according to Draggy the way I sit my best 0-60 was 4.27, and quarter mile was 12.92 @ 109.4 with a bit of wheel spin
Big improvement compared to stock
Oh as a note that dyno session was before I installed the VRSF intercooler. Since that it does feel better in the upper rpm range as the boost hangs strong longer.. If that makes any sense
Go with stage 1 spools very quick! I have stage 1 pure turbo fbo running flex fuel custom tune car pushing 450 awhp in summer and 470 in winter months. Love the car it's a 2011 535i xdrive.
That's exactly what I needed to hear.
Looks like I know where my next pound of hundred dollar bills will be going...lol..
Are you still on the stock hpfp with the Pure stage 1???
Thanks bro..
You got it right on the money. (N51)-52 is the most reliable Naturally Aspirated, no turbos BMW. As an owner sence 2010 E92 M sport pak and being a smog state, well not a problem that 3 stage manifold delivers all the beef you need without the problems as you have said. The N54 was great if you like spending cash every so offen, a lot of cash. But hay track day is the ticket to your fun that comes with a price tag. and again as you said N55 has it's moments, those turbos you have a bit more reliable experience but again with again a price tag. After all it's a BMW and in our experience the N51- N52 for all around sport driving on your daily journey is the way to go, without the massive problems, As you described to a T. Big time fan of the BMW world.
I gotta 2013 328i coupe, I wanna beef it up but keep it reliable. What would you do?
& itâs a N52 I6 like how he says in the vid
It's all about the engine, as in the comments your best bet is the N51 being petty much the same as the N52. Also the 3 stage manifold is the extra horsepower on the N51-N52. A reliable engine by far with much fewer problems.
Damn. Reading all the N52 comments here got me thinking now lol. I have an N54 and I honestly donât know how I didnât give up on it. Iâve had it for about 5 years now. Itâs a beast! Zero issues. Iâll prob consider RWD more on my next build, mostly for doing my own maintenance reasons. I like AWD as a daily. I donât have the tools for a lot of this shit lol. Throughout the build I kept telling myself I sold the wrong car (had a 97 e36 M3). Iâm glad I was wrong. But also absolutely loved the e36 M3.
nah you definitely fucked up selling the best car ever & best bmw for an n54 car â ïž
@@shotty. lol. Figured I get heat for that comment, I get it.
sold my 97 e36 m3 10 years ago. I'll never forgive myself despite currently owning a 6MT e60 m5 and an e61 535xi. I think I'd trade both of them for my e36 right now...
@@josephpizzo4373 I donât forgive myself either. Total workhorse, even with all the problems mine had. That car got me into bmws
forgot the best out of all, M57!
I have a 335i e93 with the N54. It was a basket case when I bought it about a year ago. Recently, finally, I have it running and looking really nice. Basically had to do all the maintenance that nobody else did. Plugs, coil packs, fuel, injectors, alternator, battery, power steering pump, AC compressor motor mounts that I upgradedđđđđđ
One of the collest things about the N52 is it can run individual intakes, not throttle bodies, intakes! This is due to it being a naturally aspariated Valvetronic motor. Valvetronic handles the throttle inputs rather than a throttle body which is what makes the indidiual intakes possible. It's not possible to do it on an N54 or N55 because of the turbo or on the M52 or M54 because of the need for a throttle body. You can get a kit for the individual throttle bodies with a tune from a few small companies and it makes them sound crazy. It also slightly boosts the torque output of the engine.
That said the N55 is by far my favorite. They're power delivery with the twinscroll turbo is so smooth and they sound incredible with a good exhaust.
Edit for spelling :)
I absolutely love my e82 135i N54. Car has vrsf downpipes, Wagner intercooler, afe intakes and refurbished turbos. It's a small beast
You should talk about the 335is
E20 2002 Turbo was BMWs first production turbo. May have sold substantially less units (less cars to put it in) but still was sold at dealers.
I had a 330xi (auto, E90), I enjoyed the N52 with itâs more typical BMW inline 6 NA experience. That being said, I couldnât argue with the raw power put out by subsequent engines. I remember my service loaner in 2007 was a 335i and I was blown away, it was a big deal at the time in the power wars (when G35 and IS350 were leading in 2006).
Great video
I know it migth be no that relevant but in europe we have the N43 and N53
Would be cool to see a video of thoose
đ„đđ
i own an n52 love my n52. but them boys at 4N Motorosports just proved why the n55 is the best platform
I'm driving a 2011 328i N51 (in Cali)which is just a N52 with the stage 3 intake manifold. Have 193k miles, replaced all the coolant lines, radiator and the reservoir. Had the oil pan replaced a few months after getting the car used. The car run great. Keeping up with the maintenence is key. Great video!
Had my 135i n54 for about 6yrs now, running stage 2+ as my daily all year round driver, currently has 200,000km . Aside from the index 12 injectors, I've only done the same as what you mentioned the n52 issues are. So don't be saying it needs way more maintenance if you haven't owned one. It really isn't bad especially for the price you can buy one for!!! The n54 cars are cheap to buy, so even doing a little more on maintenance will still bot cost a lot. Doing your own maintenance saves a lot too.
Amen! 335is DCT and loving it. This video is BS.
2.5L n52 was offered in canada as the 323i
Still miss my beloved N52 powered 330i! God I loved that thing.
reliable and crazy fun
Previously owned an N54 but it always needed something. Now I have an N52 and I actually love it more. Itâs just so smooth!!!
Itâs not a rocket ship, but BMW has the best NA enginesâŠjust look at the BMW legacy before turbo charge cars
Got a 2008 335xi with vrsf intake, 5âinch intercooler, charge pipe with tial bov, catless downpipes and exhaust that car moves. Stage 2 MHD
Excellent tuturiol I have the E90 facelift model 2010 LCI.323i N52. 207000km and still runs silky smooth. Maintenance done by myself except transmission service. I have to say I won't be parting with this car any time soon.
the N52 is a silky smooth setup!
Mine is 2011 E90 325i (N52B25). Yesterday i sent it to workshop because clogged catalytic..but the car is great & very capable for normal people like me..
I had a 07 328xi, got side swiped in winter now i have a 335xi (auto but not for long) bc there werent any manual 328xi and god that 328 was amazing i had it for a year and it never really shit the bed but i did do valve cover
Hi here with my 135i N55 E82 with 100k and still rocking. Advice, do you maintenance and buy in advance a water pump, valve cover gasket. If you can change the thermostat for the masselmans, half of the issues are solved. Currently Stage 1+ with 360HP. Love my daily driver.
That was not a N55, that was a N20/26 at the beginning of the video
good catch! after 8 hours of editing my brain was đ« so I just hit full send
Have a 2014 bmw 335xi stage 2 MHD with 130k and have done: thermostat, waterpump, HPFP, injectors, plugs and coils, ZF trans service, and valve cover gasket. Mostly preventative maintenance. On and my coolant reservoir bleeder screw dry rotted and cracked. But other than the basic stuff sheâs very reliable and I drive it daily for work
I've had my 2008 328xi e90 for several years now with about 186K miles on it. My dual mass clutch finally went out, so I'm replacing it with a Turner Motorsport Performance Lightweight Flywheel N52 and street racing clutch. I've already swapped in the Magnesium Alloy Valve Cover and completed the 3-stage-DISA-Intake-Manifold mod. I may do the MILVS upgrade at some point and most likely the headers. What else am I missing?
I have a n52 with 200k 6mt a very reliable engine bit gets no respect everyone always talks it down because it's a n/a
yeah brother; I have same car and it is supercharged. Lots of fun
My experience as a mechanic with all these motors and currently owning N54. Theyâre all notorious for oil leaks and issues. N55 can be just as problematic as and N54 same with the N52. Depends how well maintained it was from the previous owners. I have my Z4 N54 previous owner took great of it and I also did all the maintenance for safe measure. Pushing 600hp on upgraded turbos, E85 Port injection. Itâs blast to destroy other B58 owners and V8 engines. occasionally gives me hiccups. Btw my car has 117k miles. Stock engine and trans (DCT)
Hey there doc, i'm looking to buy an 3.0 n52 e92 330i but i can't figure out which cars have it, i've read everything i could find online, even a bmw n52 pdf i found, the pdf says the 2006 car has the n52b30 with 190kw/255hp, some wikis say the n52 for the 330i has been produced up to 2015 and goes up to 200Kw/272hp(268ps) too........but then again, N53 started production in 2008 and goes up to 200KW/272hp too, so when i search for 2006 e92 330i cars on the market, they all say 272HP, so do the 2008+ ones, i've been struggling with this for the past 4 days and i'm going absolutely crazy, need a car ASAP and i'd like to avoid the N53, is there any way to discern the n52b30? i don't want to go and throw 10k euros thinking i got an n52 but actually its a n53
N53 seems pretty underrated. First I wanted to get hands on N52 but then found a good deal for N53 and now I have N53. Although it's very similar to N52, people are not talking about them much and I wonder why
The n53 is a decent motor itâs very similar to the n52 but has a few changes to the engine and tune .. I believe the 53 has a little more torque then the 52
If you want reliability N52. BULLETPROOF!. Just do hoses at 130k
I have a N54 and I agree with everything you stated.
If I was to start over definitely the N55 would be my chose.
What are your thoughts on the 335d?
Lots of European countries got both the x30i and x25i cars with the N52B30 incl dissas.
You should mention that the early n55 engines did not have the new fuel pump. I think they shared the same fuel pump as the n54 until 2013 or so. The early n55s can also have rod bearing issues, often caused by the 15k mile oil change interval early in life
thank you for that input! realistically nobody should be doing 15K oil changes, itâs crazy any car manufacturer could even recommend that lol
Aint nobody gonna talk about the N53
It's the same as the N52 except in Europe.
Still choosing how to beef up my 13â 328i coupe but keeping it reliable,
I want it to last but I want a lil more torque
3 stage intake manifold, upgraded air intake and a tune. Should only be about $1000 and bring you up to 240-260 horsepower
When I tell people that I have a 3 series with a turbo N motor, they think I have some supercar slaying monster. But in reality I have a 328d with a N47 turbodiesel making 189hp đ đ€Łđ€Ł
Lets gather here for N55
N55 in F series also makes 700wheel here. No issues. N55 in M2 makes more.
had a e89 z4 n54 and itâs diabolically fast but Bro I feel like a boomer when it comes to the n52! **** turbo power a slightly modded n52 is cHEFS KISSđȘ esp in a 128i coupe or z4 3.0. if you have the optimism to crank 120hp more and suspension mods and drop 70lbs, you get real ultimate driving machine

Single turbo n54. 25lbs of boost e85 650hp. Most fun car Iâve owned. Heâs right! Itâs fast af. All n/a GT cars are a joke. It keeps up or runs away from cars that make 1-200 more hp.
What about the n53 engines ,never seems to get mentioned yet itâs probably the most reliable of the bunch. However the slowest among the pedigree , so it comes down to what exactly you want and can afford in maintenance.
Owned a 435xi (F32/N55/AT) and currently a 335xi (E90/N54/AT). Though I originally opted for the N55 because of the added reliability, a N55 equipped car costs far more than a N54 one due to age/depreciation. My E90 has only 30k more miles than my F32 yet was less than 1/4 the price with a very long documented maintenance history.
The N55's common issues (fragile plastic parts, brittle gaskets, etc.) followed by a blown charge pipe on a completely stock car, much of which it shares with the N54, surfaced by 110k. Having owned both I would stick with the N54 if went back and did it again since I had to perform the same repairs on my N55 anyway. To my surprise the N54 has also been easier to work on than the N55 so far. Would try a N52 if I wanted NA.
Really depends if fuel system has been addressed which most have by now. But the second you need a HPFP and index 12âs thereâs no comparison
â@@derekrostock1596 Index 12s fail too. Lot of people don't bother with them because they are overpriced and there are many topics discussing how the previous injectors (all the way back to Index 1s) have lasted 120k+ miles. Can buy an N54 equipped car and "address" the fuel system for far less than a N55 equipped car. Forking out more if not many times more for the N55 (etc.) just because it has Index 12s, revised HPFP, etc. when N54 cars are a fraction of the price makes little sense.
N54 and N55 trash after 100k milesâŠitâs a factâŠand most people canât diyâŠshit I live in a apt condominium bldg; I canât diy; N52 only issues usually are oil leaks, maybe starter and water pump and common maintenance for an older car
@@nelsonx4235 Try telling the fanbois that. The amount of copium in the BMW community is cringe. According to all the fabois if you simply maintain your N54/N55 BMW you will never have a problem... ever!
I can DIY (thankfully) and keep all my cars clean/maintained yet the Known/Common Issues articles from FCP, etc are spot-on for every BMW/MINI I have owned. I replace the problematic cheap plastic parts that make up most the known issues list with metal aftermarket ones even if the car is under warranty. Fuck letting BMW/MINI put the same plastic garbage on my cars just to deal with it again 50-100k down the road!
Own all 3, love all 3 , but indeed n54 cost me the most. And n52 super fun to beat on it and dont worrying.
N55 is a engine you want to keep stock.
why did you keep your n55 stock?
Cheap M5 E60 is the 535d
If you are from eastern Europe, you know what im talking about. They make these I6 diesel engines with over 500hp
I have the 3.0 N52 in a F10 528i, some leaks at the moment but nothing serious.
yessir! the N52 (outside of leaks) is a smooth drivetrain and lasts forever. 240K on mine and itâs pretty modified
â@@IzzyE9X 240k miles? Wow. I got 185,000kms. Your E92 is nice as been following for a while :)
you shouldve mentioned that the n55 in the 2014+ F3x cars had a slightly bigger turbo than the older engines in the E chassis cars and the misconception with the N55 not having a forged bottom end is somewhat incorrect the only difference is the cast iron crankshaft but still has the forged rods and both have cast piston heads
great input!
N52 superchargedâ€
E91 ?
The 2.5 N52 also made more like 220hp in most later use cases, 174hp is wayyyy off

I got mine e93 n54 with 43k miles for 10k $ and put intercooler, high flow cats, injectors index 12(used), coils, cold spark plugs, and, digital cluster, charge pipe +bov MHD stage 2+ with mixed fuel and duuuuude thatâs 450hp beast under 13k. It looks brand new and sounds crazy beautiful. Great sport car, but work yourself on it and itâs cheap
43K miles for $10K is a STEAL!
@@IzzyE9X no leaks, no problems at all. white color, clean title 2 owners (second owner was older than Biden), no mods, garage kept California and Arizona use only (no rust), garage kept. TBH itâs been 10500$ but still cool, never seen lower mileage on these cars.
There are still cool cars on the market sometimes for a great price!
Otherwise if I would install brand new injectors in the shop or vrsf intercooler that could be the same price as m3 lol.
I still need lsd to catch up with m3. Many turbos one day. But I live in Cali and itâs super strict with tune and stupid smog check⊠too much work to take off turbos every 2 years and put stock ones. 450hp is enough fun to drive by the ocean đ
Basically all EWG N55s got forged internals. Like N54
N52B30 Always
I have an E46 and two N55's (E90 335i and F15 35i), the plastic coolant components suck on all of them. And FWIW, the Mazda Renesis was voted best Engine by Wards and it's probably the most unreliable engine ever.
Why is nobody talking about n53? 300 hp stock just with intake and exhaust. Naturally aspirated! Perfect engine to throw in an older bmw for someone who doesnât want a turbo, and loves n/a goodness
It was DFI instead of port injection so had a less reliable fuel pump and injectors like the N54, itâs not much of a gain over the N52 either so not really worth it. Also American never got the N53
Oh and you also get carbon buildup from DFI
@@bwdrives itâs not worth it for you Americans because you donât have the engine, but for us in Germany it is definitely worth it, itâs the last naturally aspirated bmw engine from factory. And as i said, itâs 300hp easily, if you want to spend a bit more for porting the head and tunign it can go to 350hp, and rev till 8k rpm, thatâs almost s54 territory. you canât get those numbers on n52 without spending a fortune on some cams and porting the head etcâŠPlus direct injektion doesnât make it bad, of course injectors can fail sometimes, but it is considered very reliable engine here in Germany, maybe not as simple as n52 but you loose somewhere to win somewhere.
@@Shari_Tejp thatâs impressive I have to say, an S54 but with better reliability and good fuel consumption!
Also I live in the UK not America haha
N52 is reliable and the b58 is great plus reliable
I prefer the B58
They put turbos on ALL THE DIESEL ENGINES SENSE THE 1980'S. What do you mean the n54 was the first turbo production bmw?! Also valvetronic bmw cars do run throtel bodys as well, its a fail safe incase valvetronic has isues. (Limp mode)
E60 N54 Ftw
Not true because when the N55 came out bmw brought back the n54 for the 335is models and n55 was changed to b58 shortly after
M52TUB28
I feel like any time the n52 gets brung up nobody talks about the e60
I only speak from the 3 series perspective since I own one. I had a 530i E60 and loved it though!
Because if you want to have the best time with an n52, why would you get the heavy, kinda ugly car instead of a sexy e92 or e82 328/128i?
@@IzzyE9XI get it but I just feel like us e60 owners be getting pushed to the side unless itâs the m5đ
@@SicSemperBeatse60 can look good as well ppl just donât take their time with them & im a big boy e90 kinda small
@@SicSemperBeatstbh the front end of e60s are so beautiful and sexy, and this is coming from an e92 owner
Team N54
B58 is the correct answer if anyone is looking to buy any of these
B58 is a great engine, but canât really compare that to the N52. Iâll do a B58 vs N54/N55/S55 video soon though!
B58 its in another league. Can't even compare just starting by the price tag you have to pay for the 40s or Supras
too pricey for me. I bought my car for $5kâŠput $10k in upgradesâŠa decent B58 is mad money
Dude the picture shows n20 engine not n55⊠sigh
The m57 is always forgotten
N52 is the reliable big brother, N54 is the ADHD middle-brother that hurts himself, N55 is the youngest brother that learnt with wisdom from his N54 older brother.
this is the perfect analysis đ
LMAO!
@@IzzyE9X
You mean sell
B58
Spend mad money for one
@@nelsonx4235 It's the best of all of them.
@@hettmannsperger42 yeah its an upgrade...I spent $5k for the 328i and $10k in upgrades...a mint 340i...$$$...I dont got money for that bro
Would never own a n52⊠had N55 for 1 year and rod bearings blew ! Got N54 currently for 3 1/2 years been solid since day 1 ! Check my page out making 600whp out of my N54
2014 f30 n55 so different coming from a 350z lmao
