Is This The End For Port Injection? | BMW N54 HPFP Overdrive Kit!

  • In this video I talk about the new HPFP overdrive kit available from Spool Performance! I got my hands on one of the development pieces and will be one of their beta testers. I show you how to install this kit along with their new 10 micron fuel filter kit.
    For anyone wondering I met with the owner of Spool in person and got their blessing to go ahead and release this video even though it's still in development.
    Typically as you get past about 450 WHP you would run out of fuel on your N54. You have two choices when it comes to adding additional fuel. Firstly you can add port injection, secondly you can overdrive your HPFP.
    Port injection can work well but you need to have a really high end controller to fire the injectors sequentially and ideally have it communicate with the ECU to know when to stop spraying. You can use MHD to deactivate coils during a misfire but if there is enough built up heat in the cylinder you could still have combustion. It seems like manual cars are more susceptible to engine damage from port injection.
    By over driving your HPFP you're meeting the required fuel demand and allowing the stock ECU to be in fuel control to intervene appropriately during a misfire.
    I'm excited to try this kit out and see how much power my car can make on E50 with Stage 2+ upgraded turbos.
    Here is a link to the company that is offering the products show in this video (not an affiliate link):
    www.spoolperformance.us/
    Eventually they will post the HPFP upgrade kit on their website along with the filter.
    I'll be following up with a dyno video and show you guys my fuel pressure before an after the upgrade.
    Thanks for watching! If this is the first video you're seeing of mine consider subscribing. I upload regularly. When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!

Your method and comments to clean the carbon from the intake valves appears better than my spray and scrap approach. I used a wet/ dry vac to remove cleaner and carbon pieces.

    Another great advantage is that this can be used on the 535i and 335i x drive which traditionally could not use the VTT shotgun pump due to the size of the power steering pump. Also, since the E series N55 shares the same pump as the n54, we can use the overdrive on those cars as well :)

    the line you bend around 14:28 and that stock HPFP -> fuel rail line have similar issues as a result of the manufacturing process/limitations. That why the twisted tuning guys released the high pressure "rubber" (or whatever material it actually is) line to replace it that bends while closer maintaining the same ID (internal diameter) as if it was straight compared to the hard metal lines that definitely suffer losses to the ID in bends. Getting a full replacement kit made for the line you had to bend yourself would be a smart move for Spool Performence to get dialed before the consumer release.
    I am super hyped on this product, as someone with an XI N54 this is really a game changer since I have been avoiding PI for a while now, but now I am hopeful that I can finally run full E85 with my Pure stage 2+ hi-flows DI only!

      Vehicular DIY that’s amazing! Wish I can say the same thing about mine. Recently replaced valve cover with new gasket and bolts following your guide as I had a leak from there for a while, (carried out the job 3 times - 3rd time is when I bought brand new cover with bolts - as after running the car a little while, smoke from manifold and a small pool of oil accumulating on the oil tray that runs along the head). No more smoking now and less oil smell, still getting a small amount of oil accumulating on that tray where the boost solenoids are, I’m just hoping it’s residue, otherwise I don’t know what it can be. I physically can’t see oil coming from between the gasket right above where the oil is accumulating so no idea and I was super careful making sure it sat flat and torqued down with correct pattern. Anyways, I enjoy your videos, keeps me motivated to keep attacking maintenance on this car, I’ve been a long subscriber!

  • @alexandermuellerpersonalac9769

    I truly appreciate that you took the time to make this video! However what I cannot figure out is what filter am I deleting to add the 10 Micron unit? Yes I have the engine end of the 10 Micron unit coupled on to the metal line under the starter, and I've traced the OEM black braided fuel line down to a mounting plate down near the footwell. Once I figure out how to unplug this original line and plug the white clipped end of the filter line in there, it also leaves questions of how to cleanly install the filter unit. Are people generally leaving it in the engine bay or trying to tuck it beneath?

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks, yes typically you would only need this with upgraded turbos so you'd be working with a tuner anyway. If you installed it on a stock turbo car in preparation for turbo upgrade you could without needing a tune as the car would just bleed off the excess pressure but then you're putting more load on the HPFP for no real gains so I'd recommend people have it ready to install at the same time as the turbo upgrade and to clean their intake valves while they're in there.

      Ease of installation primarily, only if your power goal is north of 700 WHP would I say that port injection would be better but really it's your only choice at that point and you're near the limit of the bottom end. I get your viewpoint but I guess this would be targeted at more of an average consumer that want's less than 600 WHP with upgraded twins vs a single turbo upgrade pushing 750 whp. For the people that want 550 WHP with automatics and upgraded twins this would be easier and safer if they're not looking to break records. • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  Před 5 lety

      I noticed a slight bit of chatter after installing it that was only there at a specific RPM and actually when my AC was on so I think if it happens to fall at a very specific RPM it could happen but that was after the first day of driving. I've been driving on it for a while now and get no noise at all under any conditions. I think it might have a bit of a break in period. I'd say you should expect the noise to subside completely, if not talk to Spool to get their feedback.

    • @FathomSoundProAudio
      @FathomSoundProAudio Před rokem

      For example, a bucketed 535 from Precision Raceworks should be able to support ~650WHp (575WHp on 100% E85), so you should be about right for ~600WHp. Just be mindful of the additional power draw (amperage), as the stock EKP may not be up to the task of supporting it for long before overheating. There are cooling mods, upgraded boards to swap to, or an upgraded FPR to utilize (also from PR) to alleviate the added stress onto the EKP.

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  Před 4 lety

      I've put about 2K miles on it, the tuner did play with the volume control valve tuning to open it up a bit more, pressures were dropping in 4th on the dyno. The HPFP is still working fine, the OD unit works fine also. You get a bit of chatter on first start up until the motor settles down but it goes away after a minute or so. So far so good.

    Ok ok ok... okokokokok.... I'M FREAKING OUT HERE!!! :))))))) For real for REAL!! Are you 100% SURE in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY that this will work for an N55 Engine??? I've seen a couple of mentions in the comments affirming this... I have an N55 (bow down to the N54 in terms of power possible for sure, but I'll take reliability over power any day! ;) -- if this kit will work, I would love to be able to use it! Circumventing a port set up seems SO much easier for the option to go E85!
    My goal is 500 WHP because I still have a stock clutch with my manual tranny.
    To that end, would you happen to know what the WHP limit would be on a stock manual clutch? I know that the price-per-horsepower increases exponentially as you go up the curve, and I would really not have to be forced to replace the clutch yet with a higher performance version--hell of a job and lots of $$ on parts! My car only has 57k miles on it, so the stock clutch should still have quite a bit of life left. But I was just curious about this in case you had come across the figures--I'd love to take the clutch to its max power-wise! :)
    Anywho, my stock HPFP is just now starting to go on the fritz--this would be a PERFECT upgrade, and I cannot imagine that the cost would be anywhere near going port, with the need for a whole new manifold, extra injectors, extra tuning/modules, etc.
    and the added risk of the port tuning being off just enough to blow the engine!!
    I have several questions:
    --Will standard injectors work?
    Any recommendations as to which to get/from whom?
    --How would this HPFP system work with tuning the AFR on the car? I know you mentioned direct control from the ECU and a couple of valve setting tweaks and pulling out that stock filter in the HPFP to increase flow, but really? Is that it? Would it be that simple--nothing else needed? XD XD
    --Pros & cons of 1-to-3 vs. 1-to-4 rotation options other than E50 vs. E85 and power gains respectively (if any)
    --The in-line filter supplied by Spool: is it replaceable/a maintenance item, and as such, can it be mounted under the car in such a way that it remains easily accessible to allow for easier replacement?
    --I have a FuelIT LPFP upgrade, will this be compatible with it?
    --And the last is longevity of the HPFP under these new parameters, but I suppose time will tell on that one...
    I am currently in the process of replacing as many components as possible through FCP to get the lifetime warranty!! This is literally the same as replacing the HPFP alone--pretty much no extra labor, which is just so great!
    And as a closer, your content is GREAT!! Dude--so informative and the fact that you're taking the risk on these new types of items as a guinea pig is really inspired, helps out the culture SO much! Thanks for what you do and keep it UPPP! ;)
