Don't Forget Your PCV Valve! | BMW N54 DIY

  • This is a quick video showing you how to upgrade your PCV valve on your N54 powered BMW. I'm working on my 2008 BMW E90 335i.
    The stock PCV valve is made of plastic and can fail on you. It can cause a boost least which will pressurize your crankcase or cause your car to burn oil and smoke out the exhaust.
    If your car is tuned or high mileage it would be a good idea to change this piece before it can become a problem for you.
    If you're interested in purchasing an upgraded PCV valve you can find it at this link (affiliate):

    Thanks for watching!

When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!

    I just changed mine on my fbo n54 , the car was starting very rough and consuming oil at a high rate and didn’t feel normal under full load , i got a metal valve from Burger Tuning and the car feels a 100% different, I can’t believe that little neglected valve can make such a difference.

    A word of warning: I changed my stock PCV valve for an FTP brand PCV valve and added a BMS oil catch can to my N54 almost a year ago when I walnut blasted the intakes. Upon completion the engine began making periodic screeching sounds like metal on metal with no lubricant. My hearing sucks and I have tinnitus so locating the source of sounds for me is next to impossible. Long story short, turns out the sound I was hearing was air being sucked into the crankcase past the front crankshaft seal. I spent a few weeks before I figured that out and spent a few hundred dollars (which would have been a couple thousand dollars had a repair shop done the work) only to find out it was a faulty PCV valve and I should have known better as the instructions were useless and it was made in China. I had purchased this from the now defunct BavAuto who blew me off when I tried to tell them about it. In short, buy a quality valve from VTT or RB Turbo (where I got mine) and know you're getting a well made product. The results are worth it.

    Just upgraded my pcv to a BMS unit and I do NOT recommend cutting the burrs on the PCV cap. I did that and it caused a bunch of weird metal whirring/rattling noises. I ended up needing to buy a new metal pcv cap, which solved the issue. If you're having issues fitting your new PCV: 1) make sure you lubricate the rubber gaskets with some engline oil and 2) if you absolutely need to trim the burrs, use course sand paper and only remove a little at a time. Hope this helps save people from the same headaches I just went through :)

    • @c.c7263
      @c.c7263 Před 10 měsíci

      I actually bought Vargas PCV valve and it is not fully seating on the cap. I read on forums that if you trim the cap, it may cause boost leak. That's why your comment caught my eye, did you trim the inside part of the cap or the outside part? I think if you slightly trim the inside part of the cap with sand paper as your describe, it may be a viable option. Where did you buy your metal cap? I may be interested...

    I got 80k miles on my 335is. I’m looking to do this because my car throws smoke from my car when I turn it on after a 2nd time. I do a cold start and drive, no smoke. I turn it on again and I’ll stop at a light, step on the gas alittle and light white smoke comes out and it looks like a lot. Turbos sound healthy so not sure what it could be... can this pcv valve really cause that much smoke to come out of the exhaust??

Was wondering how yours looks like after u got it tightened down all the way. I feel like mine is not perfectly flush but at the same time I don’t want to crack the plastic fitting.
