The Infamous Cylinder 6 Misfire is GONE! | BMW E90 N54 DIY

  • In this video I show you how I fixed my cylinder 6 misfire that I've been tackling for some time now.
    I'm working on my 2008 BMW E90 335i with the N54 engine.
    If you search up high RPM cylinder 6 misfire for this car you see a ton of threads discussing this issue. It appears to impact a number of cars, on the manual cars the dual mass flywheel can be the culprit as it creates noise that the knock sensors pickup.
    In my case it was the injector's ability to seal. I think cylinder 6 goes first due to the excess heat it experiences and the fact that it is the last injector on the rail.
    The method I show here could actually help some of you guys that have improperly installed your injectors in the past and have an injector bore that has ovalized or blown out.
    If you want to purchase the decoupling element and Teflon seal you can get them here (affiliate):

    I've got an N52 (2006 325xi) with 155k mi., but seeing this video motivated me to spend the "enormous" sum of $50 to replace the fuel injector o-rings and clips. That may be the best $50 I've ever spent on this car. The car's response time to acceleration improved noticeably. The o-rings were originals, so they had shrunk and become a bit rigid with 15 years' exposure to temperature changes. Thanks for the video!

    First of all I want you to thank u for this video. I wanted to give up on the n54 for cost thats involved to maintain it. I stay in South Africa and here everything is expensive. This was a very bad year with repairs, radiator, AUTONATOR, starter ,water, turbos, valve cover and it started with the misfires. I manage to get hold of second hand injectors for new index 12 was just to expensive for me, about $2000 . This is about R45 000 in my currency which is a lot of money for index 12 injectors. After watching your video, I went to feel on my injectors and 3 of them ware not sealed properly and felt loose while even though it was tighten properly. I took out those 3, use the Teflon seal tape , and they seated tight. Start the car and took it for a drive. I felt so relieved....my power was back, thanks to your video

      @@westcoastnaturalwolverine4068 You can check the mosfets with a multimeter, this channel has a video on it. I am not sure about the ECU giving more codes other than misfire. Now, since compression is low, there is only a few places it could be leaking from: *The injector itself of around it (injector seal, etc) where it goes into the head. *Thru the Spark plug ( most likely not since they have been replaced ). * A bad piston or around it ( DONT WORRY most likely not :) ). * And, of course, a valve that isn't sealing right ( in this case bended according to the mechanic ).
      I would try asking the mechanic if instead of a bended valve, it could be carbon build up around the valve, causing it not to properly seal with the head.

    I keep getting a misfire on cylender 5. I changed the coil and did all 6 plugs. My question is if I have a bad index 12 injector and replace it with a new index 12. Do I have to re-code that specific injector??

    I just want to say thank you first of all. You have helped me troubleshoot my brother's 135i N54 engine rough idle and stumbling. I swapped out both O2 primary sensors, fuel injectors with index 12 injectors, replaced spark plugs and coils on my brother's vehicle.But right now the issue is we plugged the bank 1 O2 sensor and the car idles fine and no check engine light comes on after I cleared the errors with INPA. Currently I am at a loss where to go from here. Do I replace the O2 sensor again or reset adaptations? By the way I did the reset and still see the readings on the O2 sensor go all over the place then after a minute or so it operates normally and the car idles just fine. Again I have it unplugged and the car runs fine but not perfect. It has a slight roughness to it but only in low idle. Ahh I feel dumb because I am so close to fixing this!!

      @@VehicularDIY No its smooth out like its supposed to but with bank 1 O2 sensor unplugged which i think is hilarious. The car ran all day yesterday like butter without that sensor plugged in. I was told by another mechanic that we may have fouled up our new O2 sensors during our replacement parts efforts since we ran with the new O2 sensors prior to swapping out the old injectors which we know they were leaking. All of the plugs smelled like raw gas. We will give it another try after pulling the sensors and cleaning them out. Ah gotta love troubleshooting! Thanks for taking the time to reply.

    Hi, so I changed my injectors to index 12 and still have a slight misfire on my cold starts, and I’m fbo MHD stage 2 but when I go stage 2+ the car has blown out my cylinder 5 injector twice already, when I take it out it does have some damage on the side of the injector from hitting inside I guess and it’s black from the top because of the burnt fuel is my guess and it also breaks the bracket along with it, could this be a ovaled out bore and I need a new head?

    Mine still misfires after all injector change. Nox maf cleaned cam cover replaced. Sparks and coils. But my garage put new injectors without 3 decoupling elements. When I start the car it was shaking. I noticed decoupling rings I bought not removed from parts bag I provided. Damn
    Never again. Since then all DIY

      From What Ive heard they did because they charged me for the service coding. So I got it on invoice. I have swooosh ish sound on engine stop from glovebox area. All mechanics tell me its breather but sometimes i can hear it during a cruising. Like it catches an air for brief second. Hard to explain noone knows wtf. It misfires intermittent. For 3 weeks nothing. Ocasionaly when on stop light literally one quick vibration and out of blue today jumping rpms for 3 4 secs and back to normal. I was told the smoke test didnt show anything

  • @JSpool1
    @JSpool1 Před 4 lety +13

    You installing the injector seal the way you did is your first problem 🤦🏻‍♂️. With all the knowledge of DIY you’ve made... I’m surprised you uploaded this install man. Everyone and their momma knows to use the proper injector seal tool. That seal is gonna blow out and then you’ll have an ovalized head for sure. Pull that shit out and do it right before you completely mess up the head. The seal needs to be compressed and installed correctly.

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  Před 4 lety +2

      It actually compressed down all the way down as that pen tip was tapered and I slowing slid it further down but yes investing in the injector seal tool is a wise recommendation.

    • @JSpool1
      @JSpool1 Před 4 lety

      Vehicular DIY Im referring to the compression sleeves installed after seal is installed. There’s 3 of them. And when removing the last one you have about 30 seconds or so to install it into head. That rule even applies to the injectors when new when that cap is removed. That cap is there to keep seal compressed

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  Před 4 lety +4

      Yes yeah I got that from you, I've seen them. The injector in there was brand new and it came with the sleeve keeping the seal compressed and it inserted into the head with little effort, I did install it within a very short time of removing the sleeve. Even though that pen cap method is quite crude it just so happened to accomplish the goal of compressing the seal down enough so that it would insert into the head easily. I'll order or that tool for next time so I can show you guys the proper way.

      @@JSpool1 BMW culture is so stupid. Spend $100 on a specific tool you will only use ONCE every 100k miles or so. Everyone is so posh about getting the "right tool" or buy an injector puller for $70 shipped. If it works it works I'm so sick of BMW forums and people spouting "advice" being so snooty and stuck up. If it works it works.

    • @JSpool1
      @JSpool1 Před 4 lety +2

      Hiroshima lol... chill dude lmao. The puller I understand I don’t have it myself. The seal kit however I do. From my own experience trust when I say.... one can pay dearly from not using correct seal tool. So unless some of you guys have deep pockets for a brand new head.... then get yourself the tool used or whatnot. I paid $40 for my used one so 🤷🏻‍♂️. Also... I’m sure the bmw engineers know more than some of us common folks believe we do. Some things you can get away with... others not so much.
