The coils used on all modern BMWs and Minis are, shall we say, crap. They regularly go bad and once you start getting misfires caused by a bad coil on one cylinder, you might as well just replace all the coils because you'll eventually have problems with another. I am choosing to replace them as preventative maintenance. The OEM supplier for these coils was originally Bosch and a few years ago Eldor became the newest OEM supplier, so that is what I've chosen to put on.
The sparkplugs on an N54 engine are special and due to the direct injected nature of it, they do not last very long so it's recommended to change them every 45000 miles.

From my searches of BMW repair content, I have found that your channel is the most complete and best compendium I have found in one place.
Yes this info is out there by others but not all in one place and not so detailed, keep it up Jason, well done mate.
I was never the first on the E46 either!
@@50sKid Maybe not the first, but definitely the best :-)
this is a real good thorough video for somebody who hasn't done this, good job kid
Great DIY. Hopefully this E90 doesn’t have problems with those coils 👍🏻🔧
The mounting tabs broke on my car too so I used JB weld instead of super glue. So far so good. I also filled the 6 holes with JB weld so the screws have something to thread into.
If you plan on going above stock power definitely run NGK 2 step colder plug (97506) if you are stock power Bosch will be fine.
I use ngk spark plugs and GOSS coils on my BMW E90 Thay work great no problem with the car
Salute for the fresh e9x vids
Great video, Jason. Thanks for sharing.
there are 1 step colder and 2 step colder ngk single prong plugs recommended for tuned applications. there is also a 3 prong ngk for stock applications.
My 2 cents on coils.
1. Bosch coils were fine, but due to cost savings BMW went with Delphi and they turned out awful. Eldor was selected as next manufacturer with better quality/price ratio.
2. There are three different part numbers for these coils. The one for Bosch yields more results to Eldors.
Personally I went with Hellas, but had some generic autozone brand installed by previous owner and haven't had any problems with them too.
Great video as always! Thank god I stopped getting problems with my e46 328i 2000, now I bought a second car, a ford f-150 2005 and it's a nightmare! The engine needs to be retimed : (
Thankyou for the video!
It is a bit strange, but I have the same type of coils on my M54 engine. It's one of the last units built (2005), so I guess they decided to switch to these type of coils in the latest versions.
I tend to use irridium plug (Either GKN, Denso or Bosch). Mainly because of the life time. Have you noticed any difference between to 4, 2 or 1 leg plugs? Why not go with irridium plugs? I do not really understand the multi leg design other than for wear (but you can solve that with irridium plugs). All the extra legs are like a heat sink for the flame when it is just ignited.
Now I have the same style coils on my 05 e46. I've never ran into issues with them going out all the time. I've only ever changed 1 in the 4 years of owning. The rest are unknown from pervious owner. Just some info is all
I just replaced like a month ago all 8 coils on my 650i F13 (N63TU engine).. 2 of them all of the sudden started misfiring. New plugs and coils and its working flawless (it was actually the coils not the plugs, tested them by moving them to other cylinders)
You should do the upgraded coolant flange, easy to do and preventative maintenance
I have it and I plan to 👍
Be careful taking the old one of. They often disintegrate and can fall down the pipe.
Sr i love your channel
Planning to buy E90 330X.
Have some mod ideas for it.
Hi i have a 2008 bmw 535xi and i replaced the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket but when i do a pull on 2nd gear the car smoke from exhaust blue smoke this happened after changed the valve cover help
Be careful with those Bosch spark plugs they like the loosen up went back to the BMW no problems now
How do you reset adapter or what did you do to reset it
General question: (2001 E39/M54 type engine) Replaced 2 coils, 3 & 5 with NGK brand coils approximately 100 miles ago...and Engine codes displayed: P1346P (Misfire during Start Cylinder 3) & P1350P (Misfire during Start Cylinder 5) and all spark plugs were replaced 15,500 miles ago with NGK plugs. Most likely operator error since this is what I touched Cylinders 3 & 5 and I got these codes. Just wondering if anyone experienced this symptom after this simple replacement action and had this same issue...along with fix action/lesson learned. And to be honest I may not truly recognize rough idle since I've had this vehicle for so long and it is 2001.
how can get touch with you to enquire some question for E46 BMW cooling defects? Thanks
This spark plugs looks good to me. When the time to change really come, the central electrode will be triangular, but on this one it is in good cylindrical shape.
You don't want to wait them go bad. Preventative maintenance is key for N54 and BMW's in general
Yes they had 20k miles left but for me, it’s more about making the video and adding it to my library than actually needing to replace the parts
I'm surprised no lithium grease these things are notorious for arcing I highly recommend putting some on electrical grease goes a long way.
Dielectric grease is typically used for coils & plugs
@@50sKid yeah that's the one I was thinking about couldn't remember the name thanks
There should be rubber there, otherwise rain water will go under there and onto the engine or electronics rather than be redirected to side drains. I had rubber there on mine.
You look good to have been born in the 50’s
What's the N54 like for carbon buildup on the intake valves?
Horrible!
@@50sKid Thought so! Realy fancy an E93, but reckon I'll stick with my E46 Cab.
Just about to eat dinner and this gets posted 🤣👍
Just about to get to sleep and its uploaded.
@@jw200 both are a win to me 😂
you live in bear cave? who eats dinner this early?
You "reset the adaptations" (??) what? what are "adaptations"?
Ngk spark plus are used by people if their running a tune on the car
What are you gonna do about oil issue ?
BimmerN53
Which oil issue?
@@50sKid too much oiled spark plugs some fouled
@@federicotorresbordils7624 Gonna change the valve cover gasket in an upcoming video.
Didn't mention what number injectors you're carrying it's been reported number 12 are the best no fault codes
I’ve mentioned it in a few recent videos. 1-5 are index 10 and 6 is index 7. Gonna upgrade to index 12 soon
You might want to consider getting the BMS cabin filters and do a cowl delete given you’re tinkering with the engine bay a lot more than others :)
Yeah I’ve seen them but I don’t like them. You’re deleting the separation between your engine bay and all of its fumes and the fresh air inlets on the sides
alarm you when pop the hood open
The engine sounds off…. Also sounds like a belt tensioner or other drive bearing is going out
Yep that is coming up
Has someone cut a hole in the engine cover so they wouldn't need to open the oil cap when changing spark plugs?
It wouldn't be the dumbest thing I've seen.
Seriously the dumbest. I’ve already replaced it
