    E46 330i here, things which contribute to M54B30 misfires:
    O2 sensors
    MAF sensor
    cam position sensors
    crank position sensors
    DISA valve
    VANOS solenoid
    VANOS seals
    fuel filter
    fuel pump
    injectors
    spark plug
    ignition coil
    idle air control valve
    crankcase ventilation system

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 3 lety

      So, with most of the things you listed, such as cam position sensors and MAF sensor, you might get codes for misfires, but a bad MAF sensor wouldn't cause a hard, constant misfire. I think that was more or less what I was going for in this particular video--causes of hard misfires. In my head I tend to separate misfires into two categories... hard misfires where you can physically feel a cylinder missing and you hear it and you are down on power, and then soft misfires which is more like "rough running" where you might feel a momentary hiccup or something while idling. When I see codes for vanos and misfire and it's idling fine, I'm not going to go right in and swap coils and plus you know? I know to go after the VANOS problem and eliminate that and then see if the misfires return. Good list though!

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 3 lety

      @@sandoo798 You know it could also be VANOS related. I am seeing that some common reported symptoms related to VANOS are:
      1. Loss of torque and power in the lower range
      2. Hesitation or slow reaction time when you press the peddle
      3. Idle hiccups or a constant rough idle
      4. Slow cold starts

      "Idle hiccups" is exactly the problem we're talking about here. But as far as I know, you should be getting some kind of codes if you do have VANOS related issues. At least I think. • @Truthseaaker

    If you decided to swap your engine for something better what would be your first choice? Is the m54 a good enough engine to rebuild and set it up for a turbo or is there a better choice engine to put In an 02 325i e46? I'm planning for v8 manual swap, a rebuilt 330i manual that's been beefed up and sporting a turbo or a supercharger somehow comes within reach. I'll admit a 325i 4 door isn't as nice as an MSeries but 3 series e46s are my favorite car. I saw an add on Craigslist for a complete m3 engine for 3800..just the engine. From what I've gathered there's not that big a difference from the inline 6 m3 and the inline 6 330i. Turbo, stronger components etc. I'd rather build my own car and engine than dog out a new M series and treat it like it's disposable, total it and have a new one the next day...thanks dad.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 3 lety +1

      An S54 is the best BMW engine swap you can do in the E46 frame. There's definitely a huge difference between that and an M54B30. If you're going to boost an M54, you'll probably want to go with different pistons to lower the compression ratio so that you don't get detonation, but depends on how much boost you're looking for. There's tons of info out there but you gotta do a deep dive.
