It is truly a pat of encouragement on the back of the Marathi cinema that a globally renowned director like Alfonso Cuaron is producing a Marathi film. And you will surprised to know that Chaitanya admitted that Alfonso has actually read 'Dnyaneshwari' the Marathi translation of the Bhagvat Gita , which the former himself hadn't read. So it clearly speaks volumes of the fact that the Marathi cinema is indeed capable of transcending boundaries. Moreover, this is also a heartfelt gesture by the director of films like Harry Potter 3, Roma, Children of Men and Gravity of which we all are big fans of. Thank you Sir.

    @gmilind Před 3 lety +2

This film is made by Chaitanya Tamhane whose first Marathi movie Court ( albeit much acclaimed at film festivals ) enraged me so much, for making a fool of me. I felt insulted about some one’s ability to take a serious film goer like me, for granted to this level.
Even K Bapiyaa and KC Bokadia had not done this to me ( viewer like me ) in such pretentious manner. At least they were upfront about it, when they made Mawali and Raja Babu type of films.
Chaitanya is at it again in his latest movie The Disciple , and he takes the viewer granted for one more time, and this time more boldly and brazenly and with coldness.
This movie is overhyped , pretentious, the narrative is sluggish and comes from the mindset of a director who wants your total submission at the cost of your attention and more importantly sacrificing & destroying every possibility of entertaining the viewer.
The result is a disastrously made movie which neither entertains and nor engages.
This is a typical film festival movie which is backed by a solid name like Alfanso Curaon who made Gravity and Roma and he is the producer of this movie too.
So, such brand name has ensured its visibility in many international film festivals and no one dare criticize it due to such heavy name backing it up.
Even Anupma Chopra was very guarded about being critical of this film, and she sort of shied away from using harsh words, which she is otherwise not afraid of using on films like Radhe.
This movie is full of long and wide shots which Chaitanya used in his movie court too, with an intention to bring theatrical perspective to the story, but with very little effect to the viewing experience or giving any dimension to the director’s vision.
Slow continuous still shots of 2 to 3 minutes with regular intervals on empty streets of Mumbai with long monologues or long duration classical mehfils shots of the protagonist depicting his struggle to strive at the artform, only make this experience thoroughly boring and jarring.
Such long shots make this film so long, that they work further against its shallow content and its stiff upper lip type approach to its presentation.
Javed saab had shared an anecdote about two types of films that are guaranteed to be definitely boring -
    First type - मैं मेरी फिल्म से आपको कुछ सिखाने वाला हूँ -
    Second type - आप ने ऐसी फिल्म पहले कभी देखी नहीं है .
I am going to add the third type to it - That you submit yourself to me (the film maker) and watch my film.
The disciple qualifies in all three types.
    Just avoid it.

That does not make it a great movie. Point is that - There are two types of Indian movie goers - One santoshi Maa types and second one Disciple / court movie goers - One is for zero intellect class & second one for those pretentious ones , who claim or feel entitled to be having higher IQ class . let them be. Bahubali lovers criticize Court n Court Lovers criticize Bahubali, which is not required.
Some like Veg, some like Non Veg, it should be as simple as that.
Yes, there are some Bad/ overrated films we come across, at times, but most of the times if the person is saying "I Love this movie" we should respect his love (without judging his intellectual).
By the way, I too Like Hrishida / Basu Chatterjee / shyam Benegal's work, "Bharat Ek Khoj" moved me each time, even as a child.
I also loved Bahubali and Court as well. (Have not seen "jai Santoshi Maa" but if i watch n like, I would not feel ashamed to say "I Loved it".) And lastly, about "The Desciple", I liked it, not as much as "Court" but i liked. And I hardly like 3 films out of 10.

@@MrKumar2050 now u have come to the point . As a viewer , I have the right and prerogative to like a film or dislike a film . Just to reaffirm what you have said - liking disciple does not make one intellectual and liking Bahubali does not make some one autistic and mentally challenged .
I have some IIT educated friends who dislike movies of Shyam benegal and hrishida but liked bahubali and they loved sarka ले khatiya जाडा लगे movies of Govinda .
Everyone has a right to have his opinion .
I hold the opinion of disciple being an average movie and all. shyam benegal movies as world class cinema.
Or for that matter the Marathi movie नाळ by Nagraj मंजुळे which was released 2 years ago is the world class cinema which strikes the balance between a narrative that holds you, challenges your sensibilities , and yet entertains you without being pretentious .
Non pretentiousness is the one trait I look for in any film .

I feel like 'pure cinema' is being conflated only with movies that are slow and somber. Personally, I find that to be a fallacy.
The disciple was great, no doubt about it but it was great and 'pure' not because it was slow, but because it executed what it set out to do well enough. To that end, any film, be it a superhero movie or science-fiction adventure or another film like The disciple, to me is 'pure cinema' if it executes what it sets out to do really well.
