  • His film Court has just won the National Award for best film. World cinema has already acknowledged him as a shining new talent. Mumbai-based writer and filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane opens up about the art and craft of his cinema.
For nearly a year now film buffs, filmmakers and film festivals the world over have been exclaiming over an incandescent new talent. It is that of Mumbai-based writer & filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane. His debut feature, Court, with its droll observations, deep empathy, moral compass and cultural rootedness is a universal statement of what cinema can be and do.
A seemingly simple film it weaves a complex tapestry of our society using disparate strands - our arcane laws, the sapping judicial system, the pathetic condition of Dalits, the price of political activism, and above all the banal cruelty and helplessness of middle class lives. The fact that Tamhane is just 28 years old, somehow makes what he’s created even more special. He allows Anuradha SenGupta, albeit guardedly, to decode his art and craft.
This conversation was shot at Matterden CFC in Lower Parel, Mumbai.

He had no idea what he was doing, still he manages to deliver such a stunning movie, kudos to you Tamhane, and I love the way you innocently and sincerely own your immaturity. You have started it all well, now we will certainly witness making of an excellent film maker as this experience will induce enough confidence and courage to put things in places they belong and raise the bar a little every time. My best wishes to you Mr. Tamhane.

He wasn't so emotionally neutral towards the end of interview as he initially claimed , and if he doesn't care about the interpretation of such sensitive narrative it's little weird and then why pessism about future if he is so neutral. But even if this movie was a fluke as he seems to claim, the choice of subject was great for a first time film maker. Glad he won National Award for it. I really liked the earthiness of the film. We need more of such audacious and talented film makers. Best of luck for your future endeavours.

He says he writes from his gut.
It is however, a very intelligent and subtle film. A ugly subject given a light graceful treatment.
    More power to you Chetan.
