  • In the so-called "Love Triangle Murder Trial," yoga instructor Kaitlin Armstrong is on trial for murdering a professional bicyclist named Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson. Kaitlin was in a relationship with professional bicyclist Colin Strickland. When Kaitlin and Colin were on a break in their relationship, Colin very briefly dated Mo. Friends described this as basically a very casual, very brief dating period, without much emotional connection. Things didn't work out romantically for Colin and Mo, but they allegedly remained friends. Prosecutors allege that Kaitlin became very jealous of Mo ever since, and that this jealousy drove her to take Mo's life.
    After she was questioned by police, she fled to Costa Rica on her sister's passport, where she dyed her hair and had plastic surgery that changed her face dramatically. After she was apprehended, she tried escaping a second time, this time from a doctor's appointment she had in jail.
    Trial in this case began on October 30th in Austin, TX when a jury was paneled.
    On November 1st, the prosecution and defense gave their opening statements. This video is a recap of Day 1 of this trial.

      @@GH-oi2jf buddy, if your wife thinks you having drinks with a female friend is something worth fighting over, get marriage counseling lol. men are allowed to have friendships with women, they're allowed to have platonic relationships with women, and they shouldn't have to hide that from anyone, least of all their partners. if anything, i'd be suspicious if i ever found out my partner was SECRETLY having drinks with a friend, because it would be weird to keep it a secret unless there actually was some form of indiscretion going on. if my partner said "hey i'm gonna get drinks with my friend tonight, see you later!" i'd say "oh have a good time and tell your friend i said hi" because we're adults in this hypothetical and well-adjusted adults don't control each others' social lives. just think about how much worse the alternative scenario is - you one day discover your partner has been secretly having drinks with a friend you didn't even know existed until this moment. what would you be thinking? is it A, "oh of course my partner just didn't want to start a fight!" or B, "shit is my partner cheating on me?" so what's worse, knowing who your partner's friends are and what they do together, or finding out your partner has a whole secret relationship?
      to me it seems like there was no winning for Colin in this situation - if he was honest, she'd be jealous, if he wasn't, she'd STILL be jealous. a person capable of murder like the woman on trial here probably doesn't care either way. he is not responsible for his friend's death, his actions and choices shouldn't be causing him any kind of pain or weight. he did everything right. the only person who acted in the wrong was the insanely jealous woman who (allegedly, in my opinion) did this.

    The term “bike” is being used to describe both Collin’s motorcycle (not sure what he had when they were together but it wasn’t a bicycle) and MO’s bicycle. When the landlord said he heard a bike take off quickly, I think he’s referring to Collin leaving. What would it sound like for a bicycle to take off quickly? And I’m confused at too why the bike was moved anyway. Was Kaytlyn just angry at the fact that that sport is what bonded Collin and Mo and she threw the bike?

  • @claire2088
    @claire2088 Před 5 měsíci +3

    I can kind of get the disinterest in how the bike was placed- like I can't see any relevance for that beyond was this a burglary crime where they had to dump the bike for some reason (which sounds unlikely given nothing else was taken) or a personal one, I think you've said before lawyers should try and keep the jury on side (annd especially this defence lawyer- sounds like he's got a real uphill battle) and asking pointless questions seems like a bad move

    I have a hard time with people considering the apparent emotional state of a defendant or witness. People are complicated and don’t respond to emotionally charged situations the same. Also, I’m always baffled by judges who punish convicted defendants, who continue to maintain their innocence, for not showing remorse. I don’t think big decisions, like sentencing, should be based on that.

    • @GH-oi2jf
      @GH-oi2jf Před 5 měsíci +1

      We call the prison system “corrections.” Ideally, a convicted criminal would return to society ready and willing to lead a crime-free life thereafter. Particularly when the crime is violent, we don’t want repeat offenders. A convicted person who has no remorse will need more time on ice to come to her or his senses.

      Shortening sentences for those who plea guilty is an incentive for the criminal to be honest with the court. If you are going to get the same sentence regardless of how you plea, then everyone would plea innocent and waste legal resources for no reason. The guilty plea is important as it gives criminals a motive to come clean and make things easier for everyone.

    I have not been following this case, except for the random thumbnail in my home feed. I clicked onto one video, and I was shocked because I could not follow the story for the life me. All this to say that your videos are crystal clear, well thought out and cleanly presented. Thank you. Love your dog, by the way. It's nearing November and the case is concluded now and the accused has been sentenced. What I would really like to know is what made KArmstrong snap. In this video you explain Mo's bicycle, her very cherished and expensive bicycle, a vital equipment for her career in cycling, was tossed in the bushes. I think that's a pretty damning piece of evidence. I don't think Strickland would have the heart or the cahones to do something like that. That's not the action of a random person. It would have to be a fellow competitor or someone else who was jealous of the 25 year old Mo. This case has all kind of ironies. Armstrong was/is (I'm not sure which) 35 years old. What else did she do for a living besides teach yoga? Where did she get the money to take off for expensive trips and even to get plastic surgery? Was she ever married before? Did she go to college? There's something off about Armstrong. She was jealous of a woman 10 years her junior with a fantastic future ahead of her. What did Armstrong bring to this relationship she had with Strickland? I think Strickland was attracted to Mo's energy. Who wouldn't? We have a stereotype of people who practice yoga, even more so for people who teach yoga, that they have a strong mind body connection and they are self-aware. From everything I have heard Strickland was not really into Armstrong emotionally. He liked her. Maybe in his strange way he loved her -- but he wasn't committed to her heart mind body and soul. I'm not even sure she felt that way about Strickland -- but I do think that is what she was looking for. At 35 Armstrong was perhaps feeling the proverbial biological ticking clock. Alternatively, was she on some kind of anti-depressant that wreaked havoc on her emotions.
    In the end that's what I don't understand. What caused this woman to snap and react so viciously? On top of that she didn't want to face the truth of what she did. She got surgery. She ran away. An innocent beautiful 25 year old woman is taken out for no reason. What kind of person refuses to take account of her own actions? At 35 why didn't Armstrong walk away from Strickland and find someone who valued her? These are not questions for the criminal justice system -- other than using these questions to develop their theory of the case. I just can't get over the evil cowardice of K Armstrong. Strickland may or not have been a great boyfriend, but I don't think he hid who he was/is. He can't. Armstrong doesn't seem to have a problem sneaking, conniving, working in the shadows and denying she did anything wrong. How monstrous. I think deep down inside Mo picked up on Armstrong's evil side. Alas who would believe Armstrong would resort to what she did. But if Mo understood how evil people are, I think she would have been more serious about keeping her distance from Strickland.

    The jury hadn't seen the photos before and they all had normal expected reactions. Had the defendant not seen those imagery before, they would have the same kind of normal reactions. A lack of a reaction, to me anyway, is telling of someone who has seen it before and already moved past it, whether that is coupled with another unexpected emotion or not is up to question, but a complete lack of any emotion is at LEAST telling of a psychopath.
    So weather the defendant had been at the scene of the crime and already had time to emotionally cope and move past the imagery, or they are a danger to society because they do not care when forced to witness another person's suffering, either way there is something seriously wrong/dangerous about the defendant.

    11:42 now this irks me. Autistic people deal with this shit all the time as children and adults too probably but it mostly happened to me as a child. The truth is there are too many answers that could be "the correct one" sometimes and it is super duper uper important that "right needs to be right"! It is one of the hugest staples for people with aspergers. As well as the hate/fear/discomfort of "being wrong". Therefore when asked a question that has too many right answers it will take a while to decide on the right one as well as to just sort through all of the information swirling in your head, as well as come to terms with the absurd feeling perhaps of being asked such a ridiculous question, so when you realize the person actually wants a legit answer you have to manually start the process of sorting through all the relevant info and selecting the "right answer" for this particular moment/scenario.
    So, no, it isn't strange that a person might need a bit more time to sort through all the information and selecting the rightest answer for the situation at hand as to not "be wrong" and to make sure that "right is right"! Thank you very much.

    Like... what's she supposed to have done with it? It's got her DNA on the handles... but why? "She moved it" Okay, that makes sense, but you wouldn't normally move a bike like that if you just want to get it out of there. You'd grab the frame and heft it. And why did she try to hide it in any case? There's nothing else about the bike that sounds like it points to her. Plus... she came to the scene in a jeep? Couldn't she just put it in that?
    The witness having heard someone on a bike is... interesting but doesn't make this make any more sense to me. Day 2 in general makes me feel like the defense is going through the motions to an extent. They don't have a great opening so he's just trying to question everything he can.

      Hey, zero judgment from me!! For some reason that detail just struck me as kind of funny--maybe it's just me 🙂

      @@LegalBytesMedia you didn't come across as judgemental AT all. You seemed super amused by it and I love it. Made me smile thinking Austin and Portland, the two weirdos, so the same weird shit. Love your content 😁

    If you can not place KA, backed by hard evidence, at the crime scene at the time of the murder, you have NO case!

      You're certainly underestimating the power of circumstantial evidence that crosses locations, personal conversations, digital footprints...the list is impressive.
      Plus, plenty of good - i.e appeal-proof - convictions arise from 'purely' circumstantial evidence every day. Do a bit of research: juries have a lot to add up. 'Gotcha' scene of the crime stuff hardly ever happens. That's why forensics is a critical field of expertise.
