- Our second LA heroine to share her truth is former haute couture model, current urban organic farmer, and indestructible force of unconditional love Renee Gunter.
Renee’s a SURVIVOR (and the all caps are necessary) who was brutally abused starting at the age of two and then endured the loss of five of her babies as she fought her way to become a nurturing, supportive mom, not only to her two children, but to her hometown in South LA.
To see how Renee’s vigilant spirit soared in the face of sexual assault, death, and racism, watch her video.
Thank you to Daniela London, of the forthcoming clothing brand Choose Love, for providing us with the space to shoot all of our Los Angeles episodes.
Renee's video was edited by Andrea Cruz

This woman is a testimony to human resilience. I am so proud of you!
Very, very true! She fought hard for herself and she came out on top! Such a beautiful and graceful soul ❤
She reach a mental level in her mind were she don't give a fuck anymore. She realised that love start from within her, and not from someone outside. She did well.
"While my body was being brutalized, my soul remained vigilant"

+Daily Organics Your story hit me right in my heart, I can't stop thinking about you and the awful things that have endured. As a mother my heart aches for you. Yet you seem so as peace and full of Love. Thank you for sharing, you have made an impact on me
+Daily Organics I cried at the last thing you said, "It's not your fault, it's OK, I got you, and I love you." It is one of the most heartbreaking yet beautiful things I have ever heard.
I cried too listening to your last words. You are my daily inspiration.
You are amazing, powerful, strong yet so soft and open. You really are a pioneer, taking your life into your own hands and carving it out, thank you for your honestly u are an inspiration x
Your radiant strength is incredibly beautiful, thank you for sharing and being an incredible powerful woman.
"My body was being brutalized, but my soul remained vigilant."
I've never heard such powerful words that have carried such weight and meaning in my entire life… wow. Renee Gunter, you're a tough cookie, m'dear.
i love this womans way of talking, she sounds so nurturing and calm
Raped at 2, damn people are disgusting!!
Wtf this woman is a superhero
"I love you and I won't hurt you"
Wow, strikingly profound.
What exactly makes a human being want to sexualy abuse a 2 year-old? I just can't..
+HaxelPrime multiple humans! (presumably).. how
you may find that those who may have done this, may have been children themselves
etlrduce power. its healty to get a kick of power, but rapists seem to get such a kick out of power combined witg sex that they dont care for the amount of weight that person caries for years or possibly their entire life after such a horible thing.
its discusting
This series is nothing but real, pure life.
Who fucking jumped when she exhaled so LOUD *MY HEART*
Lol! I did.
Mandisa Mlangeni lol my poor ears.
The epitome of inner strength.....
such a strong yet calming force of woman.
"I'm so glad to give you a girl, because you deserve a daughter". Powerful phrase, I'll have to remember that. Thank you for the amazing interview.
I think of Maya Angelou's "And Still I Rise." You wear your strength and resilience so beautifully.
Her strengh is incredible. She's beautiful in everything she is...
I wanted this to be longer. Didn't want it to end.
uhmm...I wish this had been at least twice as long : (
such an inspiration.
I wish I knew the right words to express how these videos make me feel, but I don't so you'll just have to settle for... "I am SO GRATEFUL to you for making these videos". Thank you!
This woman has experienced some of the worst things ever. OMG. Her kindness and tenderness comes from so much pain. Bless her.
I love you Renee Gunter. Your soul is pure.
+jasmine nnenna Thank you sweet Angel.
I was not ready.
+tyknos93 Yeah, it's deep..but real. The foundation that has made me into the woman I'm becoming. Life ain't for sissies when you're a woman of color.
this woman is so together. i'll never get there. she's wonderful.
+cathy vice YES you will, in your own way. Baby steps get you there too ya know!
You are where you are and that's okay....and YES, you can and will get there. It's a journey. She certainly didn't get where she is overnight. And while I can't speak to the details of her life and her experiences, I would wager she got to where she is by having compassion for herself - being more accepting of herself in her journey rather than judgemental. Be compassionate towards yourself at every phase of growth. Keep telling yourself "I am where I am and that's okay. "
She had the same thoughts about other people...and look where she ended up. Don't limit your potential
Ur already there. The mirror that we use to judge ourselves is a liar. Keep going and growing but ur beautiful right now in, this very moment.
I want you to know, I wrote down what you said on a sticky note and I now have it posted up in my office for a constant reminder. I thank you because I really needed that.
4 minutes of watching this video and I'm already sobbing.
Amazing woman.
MISS RENEE YOU TOOK MY BREATH AWAY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TESTIMONY. MAY GOD FURTHER HIS BLESSINGS UPON YOU
She is so powerful, in the way she, to this day, holds herself and is so unapologetic and brutally honest. Its so rare to see such a pure soul and her story is truly inspirational
I just want to give her a big, sincere hug. How much hardship can one human go through, and be so strong?
It's such a cliche to say someone is an inspiration, but NEVER has it been more apt!
The is a remarkable interview. I wish there were more people like her around to be role models.
People like her are all over the place. You just never see them and the world for the most part doesn't want to see them or the world isn't ready to see them.
Dang, I was good until the end. Now I'm crying again. Thank you for sharing, I really related to your yoga class story. I'm so glad you were finally blessed w/ children. May God continue to bless you & your endeavors.
This woman has had such an incredible life. She is an inspiration. I love this series!
This woman is proof that beauty can thrive in the most fragile of places. Thank you so much for sharing, you are most definitely loved.
this is the most amazing story of stylelikeu and that's saying a lot.
this kind of people, like this strong and beautiful woman, makes me wanna live and love
wow wow wow what a fucking WOMAN. She transformed a neighbourhood and created a community, imagine how many people that has positively affected. We need more community in this society.
What an inspiration... I'm speechless.
So sad, so inspiring. Best video I've ever seen on youtube.
An absolutely remarkable woman. A very uplifting and hopeful interview. Thank you for this.
+Laurie Baeder It is my honor to at least share that there is ALWAYS a way.
Gosh, just so so beautiful. She's so courageous and amazing. A true inspiration
This makes reevaluate all your priorities in life, and just be grateful for the life you had and what you have now!
"It's not your fault. I got you. I love you. "
Wow.. I'm speechless. She's such an amazing, admirable, strong, and kind woman. And I'm so glad that baby girl has such a loving mother to look after her. You're my role model Ms. Renee Gunter.. thank you for sharing a little of your strength with the entire world
I just want to hug her, not out of pity or sorry but to feel the energy that she radiates from deep within her soul. A divine spirit indeed.
I am absolutely speechless!!! Hats off to this incredible human. I love how she answered that very last question!!
Absolutely amazing, inspirational, joyous and heartbreaking. The end was perfect.
One of my favourites so far. she has such a beautiful presence
my heart is breaking and healing all at once listening to her. I hope I have her strength one day. these interviews bring up parts of me I want to forget, I feel like I'm in therapy watching this. i wish I had this woman in my life when I needed it most. I hope I have her strength in the future. thank you for making these videos. x
WAW such a inspirational person, this woman is beautiful beyond everything. Charismatic, courageous, kind, intelligent, indépendant, true, beautiful, she's everything!!!!!! i'm admirative :O
+Julia Hamoudi Thank you for your kind words and affirmations! Let's STAND together, make a joyful noise!
I can feel my eyes watering, amazing woman!
All I can say is wow...thank goodness I had tissues near by.
i could feel her genuine nurturing nature, i felt like i wanted to hug her or be hugged by her. she's wonderful.
she NEEDED to be a mom. that was the key for her to be whole and complete, and be who she is, and live the very best of herself. my favorite part is the block parties. WHAT a heroine. she couldn't have, wouldn't have done it if she wasn't Mom.
not all Moms get to wear a Mother's Crown. she herself knows what it's like when mother is a bad word, a bad thing. that woman has a real Mother's Crown.
today, i met love.
omg this was so depress ing. I hope you are a light in your world today
I relate to her and her childhood trauma. I strive to be like her when I'm older!
+CocoaCoffin Love the way she did it was by striving to be herself so the way for you to do it is to strive to be yourself. she knew her truth, she is a mother. what's yours?
What a beautiful, classy lady! I love that you are such a force, going back to your roots, healing & lifting everyone up with big doses of love and pure, good food! Thanks for sharing your amazing story!
OH MY GOODNESS, this is powerful.
It's incredible how at peace she seems to be with her story.
I love you Ms Renee Gunter. I am sure you do not need this now but I will say you anyway.
+Thandi M Love is ALL there is...thank you!
when I see the thumbs down on any of these videos in this particular series I'm shocked and heartbroken every time. it has little to do with the pouring out of narrative, told so beautifully and tragic here, but all the stories. these are people who are offering the only thing we keep, which are our story, unique to us alone and offer themselves, scarred, naked, torn, freed, renewed, fashioned, and more and thumbs down, really?
Thank you...poignant and articulately shared.
I almost don't even want to start, cuz once i do, in this rare gift of a mood, I can't stop writing, and end up with volumes of stuff that's better left saved for novels, but I'm compelled by this woman, who, to me, is ironically so different from most typical models, because it's not what defines her, given that she is so much more, yet naturally possesses the exact balance of unique grace, strength, wisdom, focus, confidence and humility that would make her a perfect, more intriguing role model. The closer you look, the more beauty and depth is revealed, as all expectations/ stereotypes melt away, as her inner light radiates through to all who bare witness. Despite her hardships, she is nobody's victim. She is the peaceful warrior who fights without fighting but with creativity and reeps results as she sows infinite blessings, as her very presence pierces like a shooting star through the darkest space, illuminating all in her path.
she's so inspiring, i love her.
This woman is pure elegance. So many layers. Just someone you would love to have in your small circle.
I know that a lot of people already commented that, but Renee Gunter is significantly and amazingly strong woman. Her expressions, words, things she emphasizes show how strong she is. When life was beating her up, she resisted believing that it's all it is and instead of being a victim, she brought so much light and love into others lives. Bless her.
Bringing herself to a place of well being took a lot of guts and pain..
Thank you for being who you are..inspiring others to hold on..not to let go of their future..⭐
What an incredibly beautiful and resilient human being! This was a very important episode. Thank you so much for sharing it.
The Courageous Queen Mother Model Landscaper Home owner Community builder Organic Market Owner is profoundly magnificent!!! Her life is an epic tale of triumph over tragedy!!! Melanin 👑moves mountains ❤️💛💚
Goosebumps and tears. Wooo! Love Love Love and gratitude to you Renee for sharing your story and being brave enough to live it! Thank you.
She's so careful with her honesty. She makes it very clear that she's not searching for our pity: "I don't want to win any trophies for that". I loved hearing this story, thanks so much for sharing, Renee :)
She is simply amazing, so incredibly strong. Her strength awe struck me, and I cried for her 6 year old self. Thank you so much for sharing these amazing stories!
You are my Queen Friend Renee... You are truly regal!!! I absolutely love you. Your story is extremely inspiring and is proof that anyone can overcome abandonment, abuse, and betrayal to step into the FULLNESS OF LOVING SELF.
You are an amazing Spirit and I can't speak enough wonderful things about you... You are SO LOVINGLY REAL... A very calm and loving Spirit that is so very FREE and living as exactly who you were created to BE.
Thank you for being so vulnerable to strip off the fabric of the world to bare your soul.
I agree with the author, and editor of this video, You are absolutely an indestructible force of unconditional LOVE.... I AM SO HONORED TO KNOW YOU... I LOVE YOU!!! ~Diva
+Diva Verdun I'am humbled and honored by your words and heart.
Her face is absolutely beautiful! Those edges tell a beautiful story.
I need to remember not to do my makeup while watching these because I keep crying ;__;;; btw she's sooo beautiful, I wish I was as lovely as she is when I'm older.
I am so moved and so inspired by this amazing human! Thank you for sharing your story. You show me that so much is possible-especially community. XOXO
What a beautiful lady, with a lovely voice. I'm very inspired by how she's risen above the damaging things in her life.
Such a strong women, her message & sharing her experiences. Thankyou for an incredibly powerful video.
This broke me. Then helped me. God bless her energy forever.
How articulate, how inspiring, how strong she is. She is an example of I'm not going to live my life feeling sorry for myself! I would love to meet her. And what a hateful, judgmental world that can keep one in captivity to a society we nether belong or choose. This earth was not created in sections for the privileged and the disadvantaged. What a smart woman and I hope her children appreciate her courage!
What a powerful strong person she is. Wouldn't we all like to go back and tell our six year old self things? My gosh this was wonderful to watch.
An amazing woman. What a courageous account of overcoming adversity and the strength of the human spirit. I salute you Renee Gunter
Who else teared up in class while watching this? BEAUTIFUL! Style Like U is doing something utterly amazing here, so thankful for the internet
This one, this interview was so incredibly moving
This made me cry - so moving. What a beautiful, strong woman. X
Thank you for speaking so openly about your life. It appears to me that you were born, then you were psychically born by your own efforts. Your beauty, kindness, and wholeness are unalterable.
It is always shocking to me how often the people with the most horrifying life experiences and traumas, are the ones who play the victim least. She's completely honest but she never comes across as wanting pity, or being defeated and weak. Amazing, she was easily the most impressive person and this was easily the most inspiring video of this series that I've seen, and I've seen a LOT of these videos now.
Yeh...but that is usually the case! My sister works and supports people who have gone through terrible trauma most of their life! She said like this woman many of them quite often cope really well considering and have a more positive outlook on life because they do not expect anything handed on a plate! This woman is definitely the best inspirational talk on here. Apparently lot of them so I am told just sound like drama queens who think they are badly done to lol!
This woman is amazing, I could listen to her for hours. Huge respect for this strong lady.
After watching this, I'd like to say that I love you Renee
I never thought I would ever have a favorite in this series because every single interview is absolutely world class and incredible but …. THIS IS MY FAVORITE!!!! ugh!!!! what an amazing SPIRIT !!!!!!!!!
jesus, this is the kinda story that i've only heard in fiction before this. i don't know what to feel.
The last question had one of the most powerful answers that really hit home.
You did take care of that little girl inside of you. You did very well. Well done! So much beauty in you resilience.
Incredible-thank you so much for your strength. Such a real inspiration.
Love this thank you for sharing. I can relate to some things. Blessings✌🏾🌻💕🙇🏽♀️
her strength is absolutely incredible. What a beautiful person.
why does this not have more clicks? more people have to see this, omg. i freaking LOVE her
You are a Beautiful , Courageous Women, and the world is Blessed to have you here as a part of it .
This is so hard for me. So emotional! Thank you for this
"It's not your fault". I so much enjoyed listening to this woman. Though she was a model, the piece wasn't about her look but about her experiences, who she is. More of these please.
