How a Sudanese Refugee Became an Indomitable Model: Mari Malek

  • In our second What's Underneath video in honor of Black History Month, we feature the activist-DJ-model Mari Malek. Mari was born in war-torn Sudan, has lived in the projects of New Jersey, and has faced extreme harassment due to the dark color of her skin. Though she has endured struggles that few of us will experience, Maria has never strayed from her true self: "Fuck everybody who thinks I should suppress my identity. Fuck fear. It’s time for the world to look at one another not as black race or a white race but as a human race."
    Mari's video was shot and edited by Andrea Cruz

    I just love her so much, everything she said I just felt it in my heart, because I know completely 100% what she was going through, and to hear that from her now just makes me so happy. Where was she when I was 12! Arghh. It's okay though I think sometimes things have to get bad to get better, you learn and you grow, the experiences I had, I wouldn't change them because I love who I am today. I want to play this video for all the little black girls I know are struggling with themselves and who don't know that, their skin, their hair their weight is perfect. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, DARK is beautiful. I really liked how she touched on the skinny shaming too just EVERYTHING. I love her.

    • @silverstorm1000
      @silverstorm1000 Před 9 lety +6

      Hell yeah! Black girls are beautiful! Black is beautiful!
      Fuck all the racists who say otherwise.
      I am so happy to see that there are black girls watching this video because I think it would be inspirational and show black people like so many fashion magazines won't. Black women can be just as beautiful as white women and we need more positive representations of black people in media.

    • @melodope
      @melodope Před 9 lety +21

      silverstorm1000 "Black women can be just as beautiful as white women..." I know you mean well, but this sounds very eurocentric and backward. White women should not be the ideal beauty standard to which people of color should achieve. That only perpetuates the problem. The reality is that black women ARE just as beautiful as anybody other skin color.

    • @DianaSUME
      @DianaSUME Před 9 lety +12

      ***** silverstorm1000 Exactly, the problem is that white women are seen as what black women should aspire to, and are also underrepresented in the media which is was so many black women, especially dark skinned women with kinky hair, struggle to find themselves beautiful when their features are beautiful in their own right, not just because their nose looks more european than what you would usually expect from a black woman. And black women are so diverse there are 53 countries in Africa, all with individual physical features.

    • @silverstorm1000
      @silverstorm1000 Před 9 lety +10

      *****
      Damn straight!
      Anyone of any race can be beautiful and more specifically, this of course applies to black women. That said I am not trying to do a "#alllivesmatter" I agree that black women are beautiful.
      Blackness is beautiful.

    • @silverstorm1000
      @silverstorm1000 Před 9 lety +6

      *****
      Yes! This is also very true. I will be honest, as a child before I knew anything about racism or discrimination, I had a best friend who was black and I thought her skin was so beautiful I wanted to have skin like her's. Why does society teach black women to hate their skin?
      Why does society teach white people that their skin is superior?
      I should also mention that my skin affords me a lot of privilege in a predominantly white country (despite originally being native Australians (Aboriginals)) so I shouldn't really say things like "I wish I was black" given that with how pretty it is, comes a fuckload of discrimination and poor treatment from white people.

    My skin color is light and I am African American ---but I always wanted to be Mari Malek's color because when I was very young, my mother would always comment about the beauty of dark skin. (I would sit in the sun for hours to darken!) To this day, I still find it the most beautiful complexion, to be dark. Just goes to show you that we will believe what we're taught. Malek is beautiful, but I have also learned to appreciate my light skin. PEOPLE are beautiful. Let's learn and teach this.

      It absolutely is! I was shocked to realize once I've branch out from my neighborhood, then to another city, then to accumulating new friends from around the world; lighter is known to be of worthiness. Dark is looked down upon in virtually every country. For me being lighter brown skin, I tend to get the "I like you're complexion; you're not too dark." Which in result inclines me to respond that I LOVE dark skin and I think to hold and produce that much melanin is a blessing and power from divinity.
      I'm mixed of many ethnicities but I'm classified as black. I have kinky hair as well. Yet, supposedly, it's unkempt to some people- but yet those of the same complexion as the ones who deem it as disgusting have stopped to complement me. They even go as far to say "I wish I had your hair & skin color." It's all fascinating to me really.
      All in all, I'm very happy to have come across her video today. Beautiful and articulate. Love it!!

People who act with hatred should feel guilty. Regarding the statement about those people being obese I mean I hope that they can understand what it feels like to be shamed or have atleast moved past their ignorance. The use of the word obese is not meant as a derogative term towrds overwight people, but as my inclination towrds negative pepole who tend to have low self esteem and extrodinarily poor standards of lifestyle.

I come from a place where black at least means skin shade of brown, in American terms because we only have two which is black and white and just color for others, or at least beige so it sometime just makes me cringe aa bit when people say they have "black" skin when in fact they are white.
