A Do-or-Die Artist, Celebrating Her Blackness: Tarriona ‘Tank’ Ball

- Musician, poet, and frontwoman for Tank and the Bangas, Tarriona ‘Tank’ Ball’s outsized hair matches her huge personality. But the New Orleans native wasn’t always so expressive. Her life changed dramatically when she fled to Indianapolis during Hurricane Katrina, where her life became both the best and the worst of her life. Though desperately missing the rich culture of her hometown, she was ecstatic with suddenly no longer being required to wear school uniforms. This, combined with the hoards of donated clothing that she was being offered, helped Tank to find her style mojo. As Tank says in her interview, “I was able to literally redefine who I wanted to be.” While she still battles with the unspoken rules of being a ‘Big Girl,’ (and recoils at being in a separate category from regular ‘girls’) she feels the most beautiful when she is using her style to exaggerate and celebrate her black features. As she puts it, “To have so much melanin is so special. I have to make it count.”
Thank you to Ace Hotel New Orleans for providing us with a location to film Tank’s episode!

Me too!
what hurts me most is the way we sensor our pain instead of letting out. the way she scolds herself right in the beginning, because she assumes she's not supposed to cry so early in the video, if at all.
I wonder what it would look like if allow all our emotions to be, come in and go as they need, without censoring
YES. EXACTLY. I have only just learned this and it is glorious.
We are program to be self conscious of every emotion and word, because we've been taught that eyes are always watching our behavior 👀........

"...cause at the end of my days, I don't want anything in my hands. I want to have given it all." She's so precious and I keep replaying the first 10secs to hear THAT VOICE!
"I don't want anything in my hands." ugh that stuck with me too. Also, thank you for reminding me to replay so I can hear that again!!

I was supposed to lol, for my acne but they changed their minds I guess
Omg Hi SARA!!
StyleLikeU start that shit up!!! We all wanna see Sara!!
She sounds so powerful and strong. An inspirational woman. I think these videos should be incorporated into education in secondary schools to teach boys and girls that everyone has a story that you can't see from the outside and that's it's okay to be emotional and talk about your feelings, and also that your experiences don't have to define you, but they will help you to grow
That would be golden!
I love that idea so much
"it's so specific that I have these lips, these eyes, this body... I have to make it count." her wisdom blows me away, she's so honored to be who she is and that's so rare to see which only makes the mindset more beautiful-- just like her Xx
I'm a black man and I appreciate you my sister for this. ✊🏾✊🏾

Her smile is so infectious. The way she spoke about music is so true tho. I hear those lyrics in my high school halls and always think "is this ok?"
So important right now to hear a black woman showing love and compassion to herself. Her beauty and resilience are so inspiring.
Every time she giggled or smiled, I couldn't help but do the same. 😊
She is absolutely stunning. It's healing to hear her talk about her dark skin. I can relate. Thank you
You are loved and wanted
This woman here!!!
She changed the game for me, I am over here bawling my eyes out. She was genuinely, unapologetically, herself. Her truth, and rawness was perfect. I want to meet her. Thank you for one of the best episodes I've seen. She is beautiful, and perfect, and whole...the entire package. Keep shining that light, Sista!!!
I'm 15 and I feel like this series has had a great educational impact on me. I'd never thought as much about body image and it's impact on my mind.
So thank you very much for opening my eyes.
Same. I’m 32 I’ll be 33 next month and just discovering this.
I'm reading your comment in 2024. You are 7 years older, a real adult. Please update and tell us how you think of your body image now. TY!
She is so beautiful. She is co colourful. She is black girl magic!
She's so cute. And very beautiful.
she's fucking incredible....i had chills at her couple of lines
"at the end of my days I don't anything in my hands, I want to have given it all."
Exactly 🧘🏾♀️
The more she took off the more beautiful she became to me! I Love All of my sisters though some of us have been through some stuff! We are Mother Earth with her cracks, crevices and ruins! That voice moves me! I list this one as Favorite. I am better inside because she lives. She lives in me!
"It's so funny that I live my life in the most noticeable fashion these days, when before, I would do anything to blend into the walls" breaks my heart
I loved when Tarriona took her hair down, she is so beautiful.
She is so beautiful, in every sense of the word.
Wow this really hit home.! And her voice is so soothing!
She is BEAUTIFUL! Her personality, strength, face, those legs wow, a stunner.
I was Crying because she's so Deep .. . So Real and then I saw those Big Beautiful Leg's
She has one of the most beautiful and haunting speaking voices I've ever heard 😍 what an amazing soul
when saw this, it almost made me cry. I'm someone who doesn't know what her style is, who isn't comfortable in her body and really cares about what people think. seeing this, i got a bitchslap back in my face. this is not how you should life, this is not who you are. now I'm rewachting all of the other clips and i really think i know what to do, who i want to become, who i am. maby it's weird to say it here, and maby its also weird to say that so soon, but i find something here that made me really think who am i and that was what i just needed. so thankyou ❤
Maaike how’s life been working out for you. I hope your well 💙👋🏽

I remember seeing you feature at All City and Freshhh Heat and to watch your growth over the years has been a sense of hope and inspiration.

super loved her...I love how special it is to be a black girl
How special is it
I'm in awe of the beauty of your words. What you said about renting and owning at the same time, what you said about your hands being empty in the end because you want to have given everything away, that's going to stick with me for a long time.
She radiates strength. Awesome woman.
These videos give me so much hope. They encourage me to be a better version of myself and love myself every step along the way. I am so thankful for the role models I see in these women and the honesty and collective love of this community.
Her message to her 12 year old self is something I think we should all repeat to ourselves. Such a beautiful woman!
I love her 💗 i felt such a genuine light from her.
Also I gasped when she let her hair down cause it was glorious 👑
So needed this this morning. ❤ Thank you!
supernovadiva5000 me too :)
This is incredibly beautiful, she made me feel really peaceful. If she could read this I would say thank you, what you shared helps more people then you realize. It helped me.
It's not stupid to be emotional about your relationship with your body. I'd be crying up there one minute in myself, this was powerful. I loved this one.
she wears her skin so beautiful!
I could listen to Tarriona talk forever. Her voice is so calm. Everything she says is so powerful. Here's to being comfortable in our clothes and in our bodies.
I don't know her, but I feel connected to her through her experiences and what she has learned. So much respect
Ricky Hyde her music will blow you away! Wow
I literally cried the whole time watching this. beautiful.
2 minutes in and this woman is already my favourite interview I’ve watched. She’s absolutely amazing and beautiful.
I watch so many of these videos and I just wish I had of been this self aware when I was younger. In my 40’s now and it’s only now I’m starting to really discover who I am as a person. Thank you all so very much for the work you’re doing 💐💐💐
Beautiful video. And she brings up topic that always shocked me. Why we, as a women no matter what colour or ethnicity we are, allow men to treat us in such degrading way? Why we tolerate this? And what's more why in English speaking countries girls address themselves as "bitches"?
She is a god damn gift to this earth.
your enchanting smile can melt the worlds pains. Thank you for the colors.... thank you for the words. . . thank you for the love.
Wow, this video has touched me in so many ways. Im also a black plus size, flat ass girl who grew up in New Orleans and has felt these words in so many ways. I’m so thankful for you for creating this video. It has and is continually helping me so much with embracing my self image even at the age of 36. I can’t say thank you enough! You’re truly a phenomenal woman Tank!

Her music has always made me incredibly happy and watching this has me in tears. She's so beautiful and such a bright soul!!
So amazing
Wow I loved listening to her voice, she should be a narrator. I love how uncomfortable she was getting undressed (very understandable), but accepted the challenge anyway. It shows Courage. Thank you for being this vulnerable for us!
I can't wait to hear more of her music and more from her just period. She is an awesome poet/singer!!! Go girl!
What a JEWEL! Tarriona 'Tank' Ball is a QUEEN! Anyone in her presences should be honored. She is real and beautiful.

Absolutely brilliant thing to say and strive for.
Yes ma'am. You have arrived. Fully formed. And perfect.
You make me courageous.
And that is a very big thing to inspire in another soul. :)
Black girl magic ✊✊✊
she embodies beauty❤ thank you for being transparent
This is by far my favourite of these videos, the heart of this woman is pure gold, when she was asked when she feels the most beautiful, she said when she was all done up, but even in the simple items of clothing she had left, she was absolutely stunning to behold, in so many ways, all the way to the soul. So much respect for her gentleness and the way she moves through life.
she's amazing. her strength, confidence, her eccentrism and style. the way she speaks with such conviction and realness....
damn, I needed this right now! ❤❤
Amazing story, style, and soul!!!!!!!!! wow!!!!!!!!!
cryyyyiingg i love her
I LOVE TANK!!!! this was so revealing and not even in the stripped down interview way. I feel like she is an open book for anyone to come and read. She will be a grammy winning artist come next awards season.

Yes, she did and yes we are.....
i love her thoughts so much.. what a beautiful soul
"...this spirit is childish & old at the same time..."
Mmmmm... Those are ancient words, my dear.
Did anyone else cry? This was so beautiful.
Every word you spoke, permeated my spirit. I know that pain and I'm working towards that peace. Thank you Queen for your wisdom
Discovered this channel through Sammi (beautycrush) and i love it. This was my favorite episode. This woman is amazing.
same and same haha
I want her to narrate my life
She spoke for so many of us and still her story is unique! Loved this!
I absolutely love what she says at the end. "In the end, I want to have nothing in my hands. I want to have given it all." Wow. Thats exactly it. So powerful. What a beautiful woman.
Love love love love love love her omg 😘😘😘
Amazing what a beautiful human!!!!
"(The way I look) is so specific" man this just boosted my self esteem
She is so beautiful. So many of her words made me smile.
My favorite so far! And those legs...I'm in love!
I love her. So beautiful.
"at the end of my days I don't want anything in my hands, I want to have given it all" - she is beautifullllll- powerful... she is doing the 'work' that honours her soul... those words I will carry with me...
This was beautiful. What an inspiring woman. At ten minutes in when she was talking about how her clothes made her feel the most beautiful it was ironic because she looked the most gorgeous at that very moment with her hair down in barely anything, just raw and herself. This was incredibly moving, thank you for doing this.
That was very inspirational. Getting some slight Jill Scott type vibes from her. Love it
Im in love with her. What a beautiful soul.
"You're wrong, you're so wrong about me dude. And I'm so happy that you're wrong". Is the most empowering quote I've ever heard. Thank you so much for being so inspiring, you have put the fire back in my heart.
I was mesmerized by what she said....and her looks and smile and body are gorgeous and amazing...and that laugh! oh my goodness. she is luscious in every way. Queen!
