    Originally Nicks was inspired to write a song titled “Edge Of Seventeen” after meeting Tom Petty’s wife, who told Nicks she’d met Petty at the ‘age of seventeen’ - but her southern accent was so thick, it sounded like ‘edge of seventeen’. However, after the death of her uncle Jonathan and the murder of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980, she wrote about her grief resulting from these tragedies, but decided to keep the song title.

    Stevie was one of my earliest teenage crushes. Absolutely beautiful women, incredible hair, supermodel looks, and a voice that could rip through anything. As I got older I still had a crush on her, but I was able to appreciate her voice more and more. She's still one of my favorite female vocalists ever all these years later. So much good music from Buckingham Nicks, to Fleetwood Mac, to her solo career, she kicked ass in everything she did.

    In an interview, Stevie said that the song was about grief and being present at the passing of her Uncle John. The dove represented his spirit (singing come away, come away) and also that of John Lennon, who was a friend of her then boyfriend Jimmy Iovine and was assassinated in December of 1980. She did not know Lennon, but she knew grief and mourning. The title came from Tom Petty's wife. You should check out her duet with the Eagles' Don Henley- Leather and Lace.

    😊❤ Hi Phil and Sam! 😅 Awe one of my favorite solos by Stevie Nicks!! Stevie wrote this after both her uncle and John Lennon died. She and a younger cousin were staying with her uncle at his home in the AZ desert. She was older than her cousin so when they discovered her uncle she had to try and be the responsible one despite her own grief. I got this from her cd insert for "Timescape". Instead of putting the lyrics to the songs, she wrote a paragraph or two about the writing of the song. Another awesome song is "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You ". She wrote that for/about Eric Clapton when he lost his young child. Very sad but the song will show you yet another side of Stevie, very tender and powerful at the same time. Love you guys!! 😊❤❤

  • @Anthonylokison
    @Anthonylokison Před 23 dny +10

    Also, Stevie Nicks wrote this song about the death of her uncle and the death of John Lennon. The line about the "Words from a poet and a voice from a choir" refers to Lennon.
    she explained: "I was in Australia when John Lennon was shot. Everybody was devastated. I didn't know John Lennon, but I knew Jimmy Iovine, who worked with John quite a bit in the '70s, and heard all the loving stories that Jimmy told about him. When I came back to Phoenix I started to write this song.
    Right when I got to Phoenix, my uncle Bill got cancer, got very sick very fast, and died in a couple of weeks. My cousin John Nicks and I were in the room when he died. There was just John and I there. That was part of the song when I went running down the hallways looking for somebody - I thought where's my mom? Where's his wife and the rest of the family? At that point I went back to the piano and finished the song."

    Love this song. The guitar player here is a legend! Waddy Wachtel was/is a studio musician and has played on tons of songs. Arlo Guthrie, Bob Segar, Ringo Starr, Linda Ronstadt, Beth Hart, Stevie Nicks, Kim Carnes, Randy Newman, Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones (lead guitar on "Saint of Me"), Jon Bon Jovi, James Taylor, Iggy Pop, Warren Zevon, Bryan Ferry, Michael Sweet, Jackson Browne, Karla Bonoff, and Andrew Gold to name but a few of the artists he worked with. He was also the acoustic guitar player in the movie 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972) and has scored dozens of movies and appeared on hundreds of albums.
    Stevie Nicks knew what she wanted to achieve with “Edge of Seventeen.”
    Waddy Wachtel however had never heard ‘Bring On the Night,’ which Stevie wanted it to feel like. "I had heard something about the Police, but I didn’t know what they were talking about.”
    In fact, he didn't completely appreciate the similarities between “Edge of Seventeen” and “Bring on the Night” for years he was quoted as saying. “I had the radio on, and on comes what sounds like ‘Edge of Seventeen’ - and all of a sudden, there’s Sting’s voice!” Wachtel said. “I thought, ‘We ripped them off completely!’ I called Stevie that night and said, ‘Listen to me: Don’t ever do that again!’”

    This song has multiple inspirations. The title was inspired by a conversation Nicks had with Tom Petty's 1st wife, Jane, regarding when the couple first met at the "age of seventeen". Due to Jane's southern accent, it sounded like "Edge of Seventeen" to Stevie. She promised to use the phrase in a future song. Years later, Stevie wrote the rest of the song to express her grief over the death of her Uncle Johnathan and the Beatles' legend John Lennon in the same week. The line about the dove was inspired by a menu at a restaurant.

    @SG-js2qn Před 23 dny +6

    I'd say this is her best solo piece, but give them all a listen. Keep in mind she also has duets in her solo career.
    Sam, Stevie was wearing lighter colors for her performance (a white winged dove, singing oo-oo-oo), but in the video she was wearing black. As for the song meaning, it's a jumble of things, including the deaths in 1980 of her uncle John and of John Lennon. The bits that sound like visiting are linked to her uncle, who died of cancer at home. The nightbird calling would be the angel of death, somewhat similar to the song "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult.

    Her concert supporting the album has a performance that you really need to watch. Her voice is on point and her interaction with her fans are highlights.
    And I think her sister is the backup on the left of the screen. She sang on a number of Stevie's songs.

    The girls, Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks (Stevie's sister-in-law) were instructed by Waddy Wachtel (guitar) to stand still, arms at side, not to distract from "the star". You shoulda watched the live version of this.
