"Me & Bobby McGee" is my favorite song by Janis Joplin & she recorded it a few days before her death. It was written by Kris Kristofferson. Janis was a one of a kind singer with a unique voice. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs such as "Summertime", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.
I have a playlist of over 20 renditions of this song.
Don't forget Piece of My Heart and my favorite Ball and Chain
@@davidpugh5982 They have already done both of those songs.
Not forgetting her classic piece of my heart!
Don't forget Cry Baby
Ran her light show with "Big Brother and the Holding Company" in Salt Lake City 1967, sat in a booth with her and drank a beer with her.
"Light show"...in 67? I had no idea that concerts had lighting back then.
I did 20 years of touring, 5 of them doing lights for See Factor, and Showco.
Cool. I was born in 67😊

Busted! 😂

"Piece of My Heart" is another one of her best.
Yep, that was our first Janis exposure!
"freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" - great statement
Great statement? Sorry, don't get it? What's does it really mean? To me it makes no sense at all? Puzzled for sure.
@@ericbeggs746 when you have nothing left to lose (no car, no house, no obligations) - than you are free ... as simple as that 🙂
You can thank the song's writer - Kris Kristofferson - for that line.
Like Charlie Daniels said in his song Reflections.
"The world heard a knock, it was Janis at the door
They let her in
And when it seemed this whole world was falling apart
The house lights would fall and the music would start
She'd be giving us all a piece of her heart
Once again"
Janis is amazing! She is truly missed. ❤
Goose bump's everytime I listen to THE AMAZING Janis!!!!!!!!!
She deserved a better life here while with us. Her music stays for now. We keep the music going.
I don't know, she had a pretty good life and she had lots of recognition and opportunity. Remember, Janis Joplin is not a tragic figure. People just think she is tragic because she sang the blues. But she said, just b/c I sing the way I do, does not mean it defines me. She was a gambler and was careless. As her manager John Cooke and Sam Andrew from Big Brother said, she got "cocky" with heroin use b/c she had kicked in 69 & thought she could occasionally use it. Well her and 9 other people died in the LA area the same weekend from unknowingly shooting pure heroin.
@cassmcmlix
Yes but if you really listen to her, she was relentlessly bullied as a child and she went back to a reunion , now famous, but still home gave her no credit, hence one reason for using heroin, picking the wrong guys to love her, plus all the sick crap that goes with being famous. Bottom line, the love she sought, she again looked in the wrong place, her home town.
Phil, I could be wrong, but I think what the lyrics are about is giving up everything, every possession, every relationship. You can't be truly free so long as you have anything. You need to give everything away. Which is part of the song's ache, because she'd give up the rest of her time in life to go back and be with Bobby.
The song was written by Kris Kristofferson, who also plays supporting roles in the movies "A Star is Born," with Barbra Streisand, and "Blade," the first successful Marvel movie (1998).
The song was inspired by Frederico Fellini's film "La Strada"... where at the end the man leaves the woman while she sleeps because he believes the woman deserves better than he can give him and better than him period.
🎶Mercedes Benz 🎶 Janis Joplin also 🎶Me & Bobby McGee🎶 Kris Kristofferson
What a talent she was! For fun, check out "Mercedes Benz" from the same album if you haven't already. Not song really but a 2 minute spoken ditty that is classic Janis.
This song and Piece of my Heart are my favorite from Janis Joplin. Amazing talent gone way too soon.
One of the best uses of the Hammond B3 organ. It really emphasizes the feel of the song. Kristofferson sang it for her shortly before her death but he did not know she had recorded it until after she died.
That B3, teamed up with the fabulous Leslie speaker, just incredible.
@@dougbarton4668 A couple more songs that use it to great effect are CCR's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and Rod Stewart's "Reason to Believe".
Kris Kristofferson said he had to sing the song 100 times before he could get through it without choking up. They were lovers for a short time before she passed
Kris Kristopherson wrote this!
Did not know that but yeah, it computes.
@@greghicks83I believe Janis and Kris had a bit of a fling if my memory serves me correctly.
Kris Kristofferson was a great songwriter. Janis made this one her own.
While not on the list of Kris's "greatest songs", I personally like "To Beat The Devil". It is mostly spoken, but a great example of Kris's writing. Kris performing "Why Me" live on a set full of country greats may be his best performance.
Kris is a great songwriter still, was inferred that he was gone, just saying.
I prefer Kris and Roger Miller's version myself. The sex change of the character doesn't work as well. Roger Miller actually had the first hit with this tune.
My personal favorite Kristofferson song is almost unknown outside of hardcore fans (which my mother was) - "Josie" from the Border Lord album.
@@mikerichards67 The past tense was because I'm not aware of any recent writing.
@@danhelphrey6260 Very true I am a hardcore Kristofferson fan and I am 73 and listened to all his music and I have the old record albums of him til this day
This song grows on you. You will find yourself wondering why you have sudden cravings to hear it. The more you hear it, the more you like it.
This is true. I've grown up hearing this song. I'm 49. I never used to look for it or want to hear it. Now?? Now I find it in my Playlist and listen to it as loud as I can and I attempt to sing as well!!! 😊😊 .. I must be great!! My neighbors threw a brick through my window so they could hear me better!!! 😉 ... 😆 🤣 😂

So you like Kris Kristofferson?
Me and Bobby McGee,” though usually associated with Janis Joplin (who recorded it shortly before her death in 1970), was written by Kristofferson and first recorded by Roger Miller in 1969. It was later recorded by Kenny Rogers (1969) and Gordon Lightfoot (1970) as well as others. Kristofferson briefly dated Janis Joplin before her death in October 1970.
Great melody and the always awesome Hammond organ. What a voice. What a talent. What a tragedy.
I had the wonderful privilege to be about 20 feet away from Janis when she sang her heart out in Toronto 1970. She absolutely blew the crowd & myself away. Sadly, she would pass away 4 months later.
Written by Kris Kristofferson for Janice.
Others sung by him 'Help Me Make it Through the Night', "Sunday Morning Coming Down'.
Oh, Janice, check out "Mercedes Benz'.
Spelled Janis not Janice
When the 'Pearl' album dropped I felt it brought a greater maturity to her musical choices, helped by the Full Tilt Boogie band's accompaniment and I couldn't wait to hear where she went from there (I heard the album before I heard about her death). Sadly I was never to hear it.
I love the line "I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday" - wow
Bette Midler starred in "The Rose"... which was roughly based on Janis' life. And she killed it! The entire performance. Her vocals are so much more amazing than most realize. And her acting chops for dramatic roles are over the top.
You guys should watch the movie. But first, do a song from the soundtrack for here. Then watch it. ☺️
Yes! Me & Bobby McGee is my favorite Janis Joplin song, too. 👍
Summertime has been covered by almost every singer since it was written in 1935 for the Broadway Musical Porgy &
Bess.
Summertime is my all-time favorite Janis song!! I prefer it live in Germany in 1969! Great suggestion!
“The first time I heard Janis Joplin’s version was right after she died. Paul Rothchild, her producer, asked me to stop by his office and listen to this thing she had cut. Afterwards, I walked all over L.A., just in tears. I couldn’t listen to the song without really breaking up. So when I came back to Nashville, I went into the Combine [Publishing] building late at night, and I played it over and over again, so I could get used to it without breaking up.” - Kris Kristofferson (2015)
I heard this Kristofferson interview. So touchin'!!!
Janis Joplin - Me & Bobby McGee !!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was released after her death. It was written by actor, writer, singer, musician, and who Janis had a fling with during the year before her death. .....Kris Kristofferson. "Me & Bobby McGee". "Piece of My Heart"., And Janis's live version of "Ball and Chain" are at the top of my all time favorites.
Summertime my fav
Janis was definitely something special!
Janice Joplin was a big part of my life growing up because my older brother loved her music and I was just 10 when I heard her voice and songs and fell in love with it. Her voice was unique and so was her life. This is also my favorite song of hers and piece of my heart. When she sang them she did it with her heart and soul. She kind of reminds me of how Joe Cocker sang his songs they both sang with their hearts and souls and the music went through every fiber of their being you could tell that by the way they performed. I sure do miss singers that can sing like this and give it every thing they have. What’s better is all these years later and a lot of people are listening to her and Joes music. I loved your reactions.
Thanks for the great reaction. A great live performance by Janis to check out is "Ball and Chain" , from the Monterey Pop Festival
"Freedom is just another word for 'nothing else to lose'"
Janis was very special
Janis Joplin's voice was absolutely wonderful and perfect for the time. She had so much emotion in her singing. Great reaction!
You two and Janis ! Doesnt get much better ❤
🙌 Glad you joined us Hart!
Little Girl Blue really shows what she can do I suggest watching her performance on the Tom Jones Show 💯
there's a killer acoustic demo version of this too! dbl ♥
I'm digging the graphics someone did for this brilliant song. o
Glad you guys reacted to this classic by Janis!
This song brings back good memories.
Goddamn do I love this song. Absolutely terrific when Kris Kristoffer sings it as well. Both versions are perfection.
Joplin's backing band on this song was named Full Tilt Boogie. Never has a band been more aptly named.
Couple of my favorite from her ,Mercedes-Benz. Piece of my heart
My favorite ❤️
I've always pictured her in the studio dancing around during the instrumental portion. What a legend!
Oh Yes your so right I can picture her doing that
Some of her more fun performances were on TV shows, for example a duet with Tom Jones and her performance on I think it was Dick Cavett's show. He adored Janis and had her on often. czcams.com/users/results?search_query=janis+joplin+on+dick+cavett%27s+show
@@suecook1326 Yes thats true I seen both she was always fun to watch so sad she died early like that....
Kris Kristofferson that wrote this, wrote many other great songs for major artists. And he was awesome in his own right. He was a big part of Outlaw Country... raw, badass country music. With the likes of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and a few others. I don't listen to country very often. But when I do, it's usually this.
He also starred alongside Barbra Streisand in the 70s remake of A Star is Born. Which had several remakes. But theirs is the only one I wanna see. And hear.
Janis Joplin’s backup band for this album’s was Fuull Tilt Boogie in stead of Big Brother and the Holding Company. Great Kris Kristofferson song. RIP Janis.
A much tighter and better band!
Wow! You two are so full of yourselves!
One of Janis' most famous, and infamous tours was by train, with other greats of the genre across Canada. Festival Express is a movie you both have to check out.
Especially when they hit Moosejaw 🤣! My favourite on the train was Rick Danko (from the Band)…RIP to both 😢
My favorite Janice Joplin song ❤Love love Janice. RIP to the girl who sings the blues ❤ Peace out guys ✌️☮️
big favorite for many so much talent in one person... ..
Written by the great songwriter Kris Kristofferson. He also wrote the great songs "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "Help Me Make it Through the Night," and "Why Me." Many people record his songs and he is a great storyteller. His recordings of the songs I mentioned are worth listening to, especially from him, because he emotes his lyrics just as he intends them to be as the writer. That's why his versions are often more emotional and relatable than others who do it. This is probably the exception. Janis rocked this! Kris tells the story about this song, Janis, and how much he loved what she did with it. It's a video here on CZcams you might find interesting.
One of the best covers of this song I have ever heard is by Pink. It reminds me of Janis. They have a similar vocal sound.
In 1975 near the end of our Senior year of HS I fell in love at first sight with a guy named Bobby. We dated all summer but since I was reporting for duty in the Navy and he was going to college we let each other go. Every time I heard this song I thought of him. I even had it on a cassette tape. Happily in 2010 we found each other again both of us were single and have been together since.
This was a great automatic sing-along, even between strangers, for so long. And still is I'm sure.
I think some of the earlier stuff I saw your act to is with big brother and the holding company, and I love that kind of garage band era as well. They were so intense. And they were at woodstock. But she did go with a couple other bands she was with one called the kozmic blues band for a bit, but I believe this one was the latest and last one which was the Full Tilt Boogie band. And so yeah, you're right, it is a bit more polished but dang, it's also good. This one just absolutely cooks though.
HEY NOWWWWW!!! 😊CLASSICCCC PHIL AND SAM! 💯👍RIP JANIS
My favorite JJ song 💜. Pearl you were gone for way too soon ❤
Great Reaction 👍🙏😎
This is a song that the Grateful Dead also do.They started doing it as a tribute to Janis Joplin. The song is actually written as Bobby being a girl.It was written by Kris Kristofferson a country/folk singer.
Kris Kristofferson wrote this song, among many other songs he composed. He is definitely rabbit hole worthy! Check out “Sunday Morning Coming Down” or “Sunday Morning Coming Down” but especially “Sunday Morning Coming Down” but anything else by him would be great too!
Her best live performance is 'Work Me Lord' in Stockholm. You should check it out. Enjoyed that one.
My favorite song and the one that for me best reflects all her talent
Fabulous!
My favorite song was Piece of My Heart. Also, Down in Me. Still diggin' your videos.
This was written by Kris Kristoferson a Rhoses Scholar and intellectual...listen to his SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN, LOVING HER WAS EASIER, MAKE BELIEVE YOU LOVE ME ONE MORE TIME...he was Teaching Literature at the US MILITARY academy and quit and went to nashville
Janis is a gem. Gone too soon.
The album, Pearl, that this song is on, in my opinion is her best produced album. Her earlier albums were more raw, where this album was more refined(?)
Kris Kristofferson wrote this song. He also wrote a song about Janis after she died called "Epitaph (Black and Blue)." I like Kris's version of Me and Bobby McGee better, because it feels more personal, but, of course, there's no doubt Janis's performance is superb and most people associate the song with her.
I have been a huge fan of Kristofferson from the beginning and I love all his music. I have seen comments that he could not sing that good and I am not sure what planet those people come from. Kris was the best Singer Songwriter and all his music is great........
I recall hearing her doing this a lot rawer.
Classic song. 😎
Yes, her best, I agree! 😊👍
Probably her most recognized song, which was written by actor/singer/songwriter Kris Kristophersen. There is an excellent acoustic version sung by P!nk and guitar by Linda Perry.
I LOVE YOU JANIS !
Kris Kristopherson wrote this song. He was considered the best country songwriter by many of his peers. He was a Rhodes scholar, a graduate of West Point, a helicopter pilot and instructor, and a janitor in a music studio in Nashville while he was a struggling songwriter. He wrote the best hangover song in history, Sunday Morning Coming Down, which you guys should feature.
27 forever!
You should definitely check out Kris Kristofferson's original version.
One of my favorites by Janis !
I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but the title of the song was suggested to Kris by his manager/publisher Fred Foster. Fred, btw, gets half the song's royalties, just for coming up with the title!
Great song, one of my favorites for sure. Check out "Mercedes benz" . Its so plain and no music but it shows off her raw talent and will give you a giggle as well. "Piece of my heart" and "Cry baby" are my other picks . Great reaction you guys are so nice to watch :)
This song epitomises what I love about the way music was recorded back then.
No one's sitting in a booth, with headphones on, playing over the track that was recorded by others in the band a month beforehand.
The band is just set up, playing live, reacting to and playing off of one another, with shouts and whoops in the background during the solos.
So much more life and energy.
I don't think that's true. They recorded the song is sunset studios. And she definitely was in a booth when she sang it.
Jimmy Johnson, University of Miami and Dallas Cowboys football coach, graduated from high school together in Texas.
“I’d trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday” hits hard when you think that she recorded this shortly before she passed.
Goose bump's beautful line
Hitchhiking was very popular then. I was hitchhiking across many states myself within just a couple of years from when this song was written. Janis has a nice melodic sound to this folk rock sound. Kris wrote some good songs.
This song was written by Kris Kristofferson. Kristofferson is an interesting story he comes from a military family his father was an Airforce pilot who retired as a major general. His father urged Kris to join the military after college which he did.
After joining the Army, Kristofferson received flight instruction at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and became a helicopter pilot. He also successfully completed one of the military's most physically challenging courses: Ranger School. Later Kristofferson would teach English at West Point.
However, Kristofferson's interests were in music, and he decided to leave the Army in 1965 to pursue songwriting. It is said that his decision to leave the military was a blow to his family. In fact, his family disowned him.
To supplement his income, Kristofferson worked as a commercial helicopter pilot in Louisiana, splitting his time between there and Nashville, Tennessee, where he'd pitch country songs that he wrote. During his time ferrying people and supplies to an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, Kristofferson wrote two major hits:, "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "Me and Bobby McGee." Janis Joplin recorded "Me and Bobby McGee" just before she died in 1971. Janis and Kris were dating at the time and Kris gave the song to her as a present. At the time Kris spent most of his earnings on drugs and booze and probably could afford anything else.
"Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" written by Kris was a hit for Johnny Cash. According to Cash, a helicopter landed in his front yard, and out of the bird stepped and gave the song to Johnny. Cash and Kristofferson became friends their friendship lasted forty years. Both Kris and Johnny had troubles with alcohol and drugs and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" is autobiographical for either one.
Anyhow you could bring this full circle by reacting to Kris Kristofferson singing "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down". The song is a story told from the perspective of a downcast narrator who after having a beer for breakfast has finds himself on “Sunday morning sidewalk wishin' I was stoned.
Pink does a great acoustique version of this song !
This is my favorite song by her!! So good.
This has always been my favorite song of hers. Really shows her vocal talent. Great song choice!
Great reaction, Sam and Phil! Yep, this is my favorite by her also.
I believe was released posthumously.
Janis was one of a kind. Thank you for sharing this. =)
Written by one of the best song writers of all time, Kris Kristofferson, Strongly encourage you to dive into his music, so many i could recommend, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Loving Her Was Easier, For the Good Times, Help Me Make It Through the Night, and of course the one you just listened too, Bobby Mcgee
Then somewhere near Salinas
I let him slip away
Lookin for that home
and I hope he finds it.

“the girl who sang the blues…”from Don Mclean’s American Pie is Janis Joplin
Don McLean said in a 2015 interview that Janis is not the girl who sang the blues. He also said Dylan isn’t the Jester, and Jesus is the King, not Elvis. Sure blew me away, as I had always believed them to be true.
one of the best written songs of all time, by one of the greatest song writers of all time, and sang by the perfect artist to express the true feel of the lyrics = perfection
My favorite song by Janis,it's extremely sad not knowing what amazing music she would have made after this.
Always takes me back to 70s (feeling free and safe) Hitch-Hiking in Canada.
Written by Kris Kristofferson. Loved Janis. One of a kind. A member of the 27, 28 club.
P!nk sang a version of this on CZcams! Nicely done!
yeah, Pink's is fantastic cover.
Pinks cover of this is incredible must see !!!!
“Summertime” was not by Bobby Hatfield. It was by George and Ira Gershwin from the opera “Porgy and Bess”.
