The reason Rumors was such a great album was because of the tension in the band. Stevie and Lindsey broke up. John and Christine's marriage was over. Mick Fleetwood's marriage also ended. Christine wrote "You Make Lovin Fun" about one of the lighting techs. Stevie started seeing Mick(the drummer). Then Mick cheated on Stevie with her best friend Sara. They were all young, had some money, and were all sleeping around, and doing a lot of coke. Basically every song on the album is about another band member. Dreams is about Lindsey. Go Your Own Way is Lindsey's message to Stevie. Rumors is the greatest Pop Rock album ever made. It's because the drama, the feelings, and the people involved were all real. They all lived through it. And they cared enough about the music to finish the album and not let the personal hell they were living through get in the way. As a work of art, it's a masterpiece. There's nothing phony or fake about it.

Johnathon beat me to it. IIRC, "Rumors" was the biggest record they ever had, and one of the biggest records of all time. They didn't splinter, they wrote the songs and did the work. I'll admit, though - after the dang thing made so much money, a lot of their reaction was kind of '..oh, I guess we're stuck with each other now..' 😉

Stevie and Mick had an affair starting with the Rumours Tour that went on for almost 2 years after he had remarried Jenny and at the time she was dating Henley, Paul Fishkin and other guys. Oh and still in her words getting drunk and getting with Lindsey from time to time. "I need to dedicate this tonight to Lindsey, & he knows why -- He's my one true love for now & for always. It's called LANDSLIDE." - UCLA Oct. 4, 1977 (Rumours Tour) ... Sara was a friend she met when having an affair with Sara's husband Jim Recor. Recor is the one that told Stevie in 1979 that Sara had moved in with Mick. Mick dumped Stevie but not before going over to Lindsey's 3 days before and telling Lindsey about their long running affair. Meanwhile they had just started recording Tusk. If you thought recording Rumours was bad....

When somebody still feels it this raw 20 years after the fact, it goes to show you how strong and real it was. That emotion she shows on stage for Silver Springs is as fresh as it was in 1977...I saw them do this in 1997 at MSG in NY City and I was floored. The song was supposed to go on the rumors album in 1977 but there wasn't enough space available ,so they just made it a single, what a mistake ! I think this may very well be the best song Stevie Nicks has ever done... Lindsay and Stevie's relationship was not one of those typical Hollywood marriages ,within three minutes after they break up, one of them is off vacationing in Bali with their nutritionist or personal trainer. You know like that Gisele Bundchen. She must have been really traumatized over her breakup with Tom Brady. The ink on the divorce wasn't even dry yet and she already had a new boyfriend lined up. I broke up with my ex 3 years ago and I'm still having a hard time. It just goes to show you that Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks really had what one would call true romance . Their 1977 album wasn't called Rumors by accident. Christine and John McVie we're breaking up, Christine was in the midst of an affair with a roadie or guitar tech for the band. Mick Fleetwood was divorcing his wife ( Jenny Boyd, sister of George Harrison's wife) and having an affair with Stevie Nicks. So they appropriately named the album rumours because God Only knows rumors were flying at the time!!!!

He was the music director on stage and he also co-produced this show and produced the album. He's helping pull the performance out of her. They filmed this over three days and Stevie said she wasn't happy with the first two. She said they were getting along so well it she was able to be vulnerable but here she was finally able to let it rip. Interesting to think that by 1997 it had been 30 years since they started in a band together. Personally and musically they know how to push each other's buttons.

But the group cut it from the album because they needed to cut down the time & also they felt it's slower tempo didn't quite fit with the other songs. Stevie almost left the band as a result. Green though wouldn't fire him or even Jeremy Spencer who often did not show up or refused to play which is why he hired Kirwin and FM had 3 guitarists. About Lindsey sweating: keep in mind that stage lights are *hot* and pointing at the band from every conceivable angle, AND this song was performed approximately halfway through a 1.5 hour concert.
But yeah - I have seen videos of various performances over the years, and Stevie + Lindsey *always* channelled that tension between them… it’s like they re-enacted the entire arc of their relationship, from love to anger to sadness to resignation, over and over across the decades…
As far as how the rest of the band felt? Trust me, they had lots of their own relationship dramas going on too. Lol . Fleetwood Mac is like a primetime soap opera both on and off stage !

Stevie did her solo career while remaining in the band, meanwhile, some of the other band members’ had their solo projects as well. I saw them on my birthday in 2018. Being a huge fan, it was absolutely incredible. It was entrancing. Through the various lineups with interchanging band members, heartbreaks, hostility, drugs, and alcohol over the years- it was about rock n roll, for them it was all about the music, about the band. And still is. It’s pretty remarkable that Fleetwood Mac has kept going, almost like it’s own entity. They’re a perfect example of captivating, real artists. And yes, it is about Lindsey. They put it on the B side of "Go Your Own Way" in '77, which, ironically, is Lindsey's song about Stevie. So here it was in 1997 when they got back together for a tour...20 years after she had written it and they put it on a new album and the song actually got nominated for a Grammy the next year. Stevie said she had passed a sign in travels that said Silver Springs (Maryland) and thought it sounded like a nice place to be. The dynamic between Lindsey and Stevie has always been one with a lot of tension. It is what made a good hunk of their music so incredible. Christine McVie was also married to John McVie on Bass and that tension was there. Stevie had an affair with Mick Fleetwood after she left Lindsey so the dysfunction in the band was so strange, but it made for incredible music. Lindsay said, "Not without my girlfriend." Second, he definitely can hold his own in writing song about the breakup. Go Your Own Way is one of the best songs on the Rumors album. Which is tough on a nearly flawless record. Lastly, Landslide was written before they joined Fleetwood Mac. Jay, don't get this twisted. Stevie was the one ended the relationship with Lindsey. He wanted to get married and have kids, but Stevie wanted to have her carrier instead. Lindsey wrote "Go Your Own Way" about Stevie dumping him. "Silver Springs" was even the B-Side to "Go Your Own Way." Rumours was about the turmoil within the band. "Go Your Own Way," "Second Hand News," and "Never Going Back Again" were written by Lindsey about Stevie. "Dreams," "Silver Springs," "Gold Dust Woman" and the original demo of "The Chain" were written by Stevie about Lindsey. "I Don't Wanna Know" which is performed by both Lindsey and Stevie is very much about their broken relationship. "You Make Lovin' Fun" was written by Christine for a guy on their lighting crew that she was having an affair with. "Oh Daddy," "Songbird," and "Don't Stop" were written by Christine about her failing relationship with John McVie, who was heavy into alcohol at the time. "The Chain" was rewritten by Lindsey and Christine, with additions from Mick Fleetwood and John, to become a band anthem, with Stevie's original chorus about Lindsey. The entire album is a masterpiece of break up songs, but it was still Stevie who broke up with Lindsey.
