Hawk Hunting is HARD! | Learning Falconry

- No surprises, we came up empty handed, AGAIN! There a reason the sport of falconry is so heavily regulated, its not easy! This video was filmed March 13th 2 days before the end of Rabbit season. We were going out hunting every afternoon hoping to get something so i have a bunch of footage. I wasn't going to share the footage unless we caught a rabbit but since you guys seem to enjoy the footage regardless of if we are successful or not I decided to share it with you now. I definitely underestimated the difficulty of hunting with a hawk. I think i imagined it as just hiking with a hawk following you and waiting for her to spot something. In reality you have to maintain a close eye on the bird while crawling through thick prickly brush to scare rabbits or game out of hiding and into a strategic area. Finding a proper hunting location is crucial. This spot was full of rabbits, however they had impenetrable cover making it next to impossible to flush them into open areas where the bird could actually pursue the game. Ive learned a lot from the mistakes i have made during this process of training Carol and i look forward to working with her for at least one more season depending on her demeanor. I think if i were to present her with a good opportunity and gave her a chance she could be a good hunting partner. Thanks for watching!

I will watch you guys hunt and fail 1000000 times it's so cool to see your bond grow
Amen!
Agreed, makes me wanna learn to do this aha
I concur, as long as she doesn’t become a badass chicken.
You need to work with a friend with some dogs that are trained to bust rabbits- that was me on the zip ties - thanks for the shout out - you're welcome - great hawk videos- dont worry about the haters
I love the fake rabbit 🐇 lure
Just remember rabbits always circle back to where they came from👍🏿
*Falconry Tip*
Hope you'll see this. Put a headline to get your attention. If your tidbits are always that size I would recommend making them much smaller. My tidbits are about the size of a nickel. Just as thin too. When she was running on the ground, her crop seemed to be filling up and my RT did the same thing when he started getting full.
Don't be sorry. Any video with Carol is an enjoyable one.
I second this :) it's the journey and experience that's beautiful to see. Wether the hunt is 'successful ' or not.
The sunglass switch up 😂😂😎
Great work with your bird. I'm binge watching and yelling "good girl, Carol" every few minutes.
Hahah that's awesome. Shes doing great!
We want more falconry videos
I can't believe how big quality content this is and how few subscribers you have
I love your bond with Carol😂
I just subscribed today after discovering your vlogs. I can't even recall how I found you or why I looked up falconry on CZcams, but I've been interested in this sport since I was around 13. Now at the age of 21, I've had my passion and amazement for falconry rekindled with an outstanding level of intensity. I absolutely love watching your journey in falconry. I wish there were more vloggers creating content documenting their experiences on this amazing sport. If you or another viewer reading this comment know of other channels with similar high quality (and educationally entertaining I might add) falconry content, please please feel free to let me know. I think what you are doing is amazing and wonderful, please keep up the good work. Everyone makes mistakes, but that's how one can truly learn and improve. Thank you Maxx for sharing this fantastic journey with us all.
Hey Sabrina. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Check out "Falconry Told" that's another great channel for falconry related stuff. Its finally falconry hunting season again so I will have a lot more new falconry content comming soon!
Dude you kick ass .. don’t let the other so called “falconers” get to you .. do what you love and be stoic about all
The naysayers.. keep this up ! Love it
With out failure, there is no success. Keep going, you and Carol got this. Always fun to watch you two.
It's hunting not killing. It's all apart of the journey with your hawk. Most hunts end without a kill. Keep these vids up. They're amazing.
Thanks for sharing Carol with us!
My heart soars when I see you two interact!
Keep up the great work with her and you will persevere!
Love your content, glad I found ur channel. Thank god I was watching birds videos related and yt recommended you. You're awesome keep it up
Nah man these vids are great keep showing them even if you don't get anything!!!! shows us what its really like
Loving the bond between you both!
Hi Maxx, found your channel a couple of days ago, binged watched all your hawk videos. Watched the last today then this came up haha!
Another great video, I'd love to get into falconry. Got to watch your other content too though, that Can-Am looks sick! All the best, Josh
Im glad you make videos no matter what. You'll get there. You make a great team.
I love your videos! I recently rediscovered falconry, and ever since, I've watched your videos like a hawk, just anxious to learn more. Thank you for teaching me a little bit more about this cool sport.
These are some of the coolest videos I've ever seen. Keep it up
I love how consistent Carol is with you, even during open areas.
Love the videos Maxx. Even the fails are cool to see. They are going to make the success video awesome and earned!
Awesome video as always Maxx, you guys will eventually connect on a rabbit and the feeling will be incredible. Patience patience patience. Keep making the videos , this is fantastic educational entertainment. Looking forward to the motorsports videos as well.
I would watch a million fails as some may call it, just to see the process and the bond between you two. The videos are awesome and such a learning tool. The day will come when Carol succeeds with a kill and it will be all worth it and we will all be here watching. Thank you for giving us content that is truthful and honest because for those truly interested they need to know the struggles and the successes of falconry!
The sunglasses switch was rly funny idk why🤣😎
Keep on going I'm excited to see the videos! Can't wait to see the first kill!
Love how super genuin you are! Bummed you brought up the sunglass change thought that would have been a fun easter egg for future followers. Keep up the good work!
Dont ever stop these hawk hunting videos fail or not they are awsome!
Keep it up. It is amazing what kind of bond mankind can accomplish with "wild" animals.
Good luck on the next hunt! Hopefully you guys are successful next time.
Man don't listen to the haters they just want the spot light keep doing what u love to do!!
love the shade switches
These videos are so entertaining! Please keep uploading them, even if its you and Carol walking through a forest!
Don't worry about not getting a rabbit. You are actually getting out there and trying something that you are passionate about. This is why I love your falconry videos. You have inspired me to try something new and to not be afraid of failure. Keep up the good work and ignore the naysayers!
I subscribed because of Carol. I love birds
Dig the big shades brotha! Thanks for inspiring.
I think it would be really cool to see carol duck hunting
Keep on hunting and posting. The suspense builds, plus anyone who has done any form of hunting or fishing will understand fully. Also please keep her into another season if that is an option.
Yeah, that looked pretty darn frustrating. I suppose that the failure rate is similar for almost any hunter, regardless of what you're hunting or what your hunting technique is. It's great that you can keep at it with such a positive attitude, something that I would have a lot of trouble doing - frustration is one of the things that I'm really the worst at handling. Maybe I can learn from you, hey? :D
Carol looks very happy and healthy! Good work and keep at it - the two of you will succeed sooner or later!
I love Carol! Apprentice from Texas keeping an eye on your progress
stop ,love Carol videos. so cool.
I love your video just by watching your videos makes me understand that is not easy but I’m really interesting to becoming an falconer
I've rabbit hunted many different ways growing up. Just a tip though, sometimes "jumping" a rabbit requires a little more work. Put on some briar busters and stomp those thickets. Create as much disturbance as you can. They can be kinda stubborn. Especially if they are in the only safe place they have available to them. I enjoy seeing a different way of catching game especially in one of its purest forms. Subbed because I bought a 2019 OR Taco and wound up getting a much better deal than I realized. Great freaking channel dude! Keep it up!
It's a thrill every time to watch Carol come back to the glove. Nice work. BTW, I live in suburbia and have several rabbits in the back yard every morning. Maybe you need to hunt in a housing development.
Yep. I'm hooked. First beekeeping. Now Hawkery . . . . .
I really like you and Carol. Very cool!
Keep it up Mr hunter! Cool vid!
Carol is adorable. Her following you like a chicken was so cute lol trying to be like her dad 😂
Didn't realize the glasses till after you said it. Nice touch.
You and Carol are doing great, I love seeing your bond grow stronger, and keep it up. Ignore the haters, they're just peanut butter and jealous.
The glasses switching in the truck was hilarious.
Didn’t notice you were switching sun glasses until you mentioned it. Lol😂😂
Saw you driving by in the Tacoma today! Looking good! Wife didn’t know why I got “so excited” lol
Hey Max, love all the videos. I just caught a new bird today, it's a lizard buzzard and I called him icarous
Maxx,
Love the content. Keep it up.
You might know this from your teacher or your research on Hawks. Just in case you don't, please be careful of leaning your face to close to Carol.
I met a falconer like yourself and I was talking to him because I was interested in doing falconry and he had a massive scar on his face from his red tail hawk. He leaned in and it did what a hawk just does sometimes and clawed him, and split his lip with her talon.
He told me they are always wild and you need a treat then as such.
Like I said you probably already knew this I just saw your picture where you were leaning in with a kiss and I would hate to see you get hurt.
I feel you are doing an awesome job and she is a very beautiful bird of prey.
God bless,
Vic
Omg I love the way you start your videos haha😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love Carol ❤️
Funny switch up with the glasses 😊
I love the glasses switch from 5:26 to 7:00 XD
Ha! You are becoming that You-tube Celeb. Hope the lights go somewhere good. Keep making good shit man.
Thank you for your clarifications in this video, it is very appreciated. I want to apologize if my comment on your previous video was percieved as critical or negative; that was not my intent. I can sympathize with the steep learning curve you have as an apprentice, and I personally faced many of the same trials you are facing now. Hang in there! It's difficult for sure.
Many falconers (myself included) can sympathize with you in regards to the difficulty and frustration involved in getting a bird onto game. It can be downright hard! Many folks can train a hawk, but far less end up being successful at hunting with them. By getting out in the field consistently, you're doing leagues better than folks who let their birds sit on a perch all season.
Success in the field, taking game consistently with your bird, takes a lot of time, energy and effort beyond the training process. It usually means scouting out good fields well ahead of the season, hours upon hours spent in the field beating brush, and figuring out the quarry you're chasing. When they are most active, how weather and temperature affect them; their routines and locations. For some people, it also means investing in a good dog. Some days, I'll beat brush for 4 hours and not see a single squirrel!
Like you said, listen to your sponsor and other falconers you trust and take in info like a sponge. Apply it, figure out what works for you and your bird and your situation. When it all comes together and you take that first head of game, it'll all be worth it. :)
lmaooo the change of glasses niceee
You're doing great, I like your effort. I have been hunting with birds for many years and there are many ways to do things in this sport. Ask you sponsor about the differences between flying weight and hunting weight. From watching your video I don"t think your at the true hunting weight yet. Good luck this coming season, hope to see some successful hunts this fall.
Nothing more to say!
Greatings from a red-tail hawker from germany
I like the sunglass’ switch every so often lol
I just subscribed to ur channel..you made a video about ur dream dog...well I hope you find the most adorable dog you ever seem..
I did notice the Sunglasses which I actually back to the video up to just after the gas station to make sure I saw what I thought I was seeing and was seeing. Good job it worked.
Greatest thumbnail picture ever.
Hopefully soon!
You don’t need dogs just put her in a good position and push through that thick stuff. Just wacking the bushes with a small stick is not enough. Brush chaps help. Evening is definitely the best time so if she does not come down you can get her the next morning.
I'm loving these hunt videos. It looks like there was another rabbit @12:28, off to your left. So close...
Dude it is all good if you caught something every time you put Carol out they would call it Catching not Hunting.
I had a falconer friend who used German Short-haired Pointers. It worked amazingly.
Okay, I feel bad for you and Carol. She needs to start realizing that she has to watch around you because you WILL flush rabbits out for her. You have to be willing to walk and beat in the brambles, not just along the edges. One of my favorite hunts ever was three or four of us stomping around in two or three different kinds of vicious thorny vines. We were flushing for an amazing Redtail named Tara. When those rabbits see her fly above them to a perch they hold very tight. You have to practically step on them to get them to flush. Tara ended up catching 3 rabbits within about 30 minutes. It was very exciting and she had to do some crazy, very daring flying. I will never forget the last bunny she caught. She fell straight out of the top of a tree. She never spread her wings until a split second before she slammed into the top of a small approximately 2' diameter bush covered in thorny vines. Instantly we hear the sound of a rabbit screaming. Such a sad sound. I hate that sound. Anyway, upon inspection we discover that she has somehow managed to shoot one foot all the way through that tangled thorny mess and grab that bunny. It was incredible. I had mad respect for that bird. We were able to release two of her three bunnies relatively unharmed. Unfortunately the bush bunny had to be dispatched to disconnect them from the bush and the vines.
Now to my point. When we got out of there I realized my legs were a little sore. I pulled my jeans up and discovered that my legs had been very scratched up and bloodied, even through my jeans. My arms had some scratches too. I'm sure the other guys were in similar condition. However, the adrenaline was so high during the hunt that only an occasional twinge of discomfort was noticed. That bird is capable of capturing bunnies in places you can't even imagine. You just have to be willing to do what it takes to move them around in deep thorny cover.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
I wanted to add a couple of final thoughts. One of the reasons Tara was so amazing is her skills developed over several seasons with her buddy, the falconer. I totally support your decision to hang on to Carol. The other thing is, be very careful hunting in neighborhoods. It is very upsetting when your bird flys down on one of the neighbors cats, or even a small dog. It is very difficult to free the pet from your bird, it is very dangerous for your bird, and the pet owners are likely to hate birds of prey, falconers, and falconry from then on. I'll be watching for that video of Carol's first successful hunt, and look forward to seeing her in her adult plumage. Don't feel bad about videos of unsuccessful hunts. You are absolutely correct. They show how things really are with falconry.
I liked the sunglasses switch haha I was like what the heck am I seeing sh*t 😂
I thought I was going crazy and see things when there was different glasses on his face 😂
We need another house video soon! I’m waitin’.
"And then I was like; Hey! Why don't I just mix in some other interests! So I got a hawk and her name is Carol." What a fucking turn of events hahaha 0:35
I want one of those Shades!!! Woohoooo Carol
Hey Maxx, I have been totally interested in seeing your falconry vids. As a Native of Minnesota always wanted to do Falconry with Red Tails. Something I spotted from another video and i dont remember who. The gentleman had a long pipe that made a perch about 5 to 10 feet above his head as he walked a hunting area. This created a mobile perch for the hawk to watch from and him walking acted like pushing by a normal hunter. He was hunting rabbits in South Dakota i think.
LOL sunglasses switch up!
Don’t mind the hunting fails, as someone interested in falconry and unable to yet participate it’s all riveting and a quality second hand learning experience
Thank you for *_60FPS_*
Max!!! Please when you move in your new house vlog your renovations and projects pleasssssse
Thatssss right !!
You don't need to bust those bunnies out into the open. That is the beauty of red tails . . . their power to crash the brush. Get yourself some good brush pants and jump on into that bramble. Better luck next season!
I'm glad you do this. It's great. But the sound on your go pro kinda sucks. Sounds muffled. But am glad you do these
Keep trying it's all about patience
You should come to England, I looked outside and saw 4 rabbits, then went out on a walk and saw 16 rabbits in about 20 mins!!
Ben Neal thats why theres so many successful falconers
I know it’s frustrating for you but I want to know the reality of learning falconry. I remember my first quail dog and frustrating it was when she would bust a covey. It’s all part of the process.
100% only here for Carol videos
It's the journey, not the destination✌️
"So I got hawk, her names Carol" hahahahah I loved that
Great post, lov to see birds in flight. For several years, Mallards have come in and taken over my pool, now a duck pond. I get a few pair with offspring in everyday now that the weather has warmed. Plz remind me to take some Dramamine next time ya head out to the woods:) (edit) ohh hey, not sure if you garden, those bunny poop are a great fertilizer. Check out OldAlabamaGardener site, he has a great recipe.
❤ 💚🍃🐦
Itz ok make youre dreams come true
Very cool! Why does the bird not think now's my chance, and fly away? Must take lots of training! Does she live in big cage or a special room ? Enjoyed the video!
Can't wait to see Carol tear into a live rabbit. Going to be freaking awesome to see nature in action.
Don't mind watching you fail as long as you throw in a couple of slow mo shots of her flying back to your hand every time.
“Watch me whack bushes with a stick”...- Max April 11, 2019... Phrasing! 🤗
