  • Recently I took my Red tailed Hawk to the park to hunt squirrels. It didn't work out well at all, she flew away and got into a territorial battle with another Hawk. At that time i was ready to quit falconry all together but after seeing the immense support of my CZcams community i have decided to persist and continue to work towards dialing in her weight so we can someday finally catch something! After our hunting attempt i decided the weather was perfect for a quick flight on the paramotor around the property.

I want to thank all of you guys who were so supportive and encouraging after the last Carol video. You really motivated me to keep trying and to stay positive. My new approach is to work with Carol like this on a more regular basis without the high expectations. If the hunt doesnt go well then I'll just call it good and try again later and will wrap the video up with somthing else. I have ordered a new scale that should give me a more precise measurement of her weight my last one seemed inconsistent. I believe most of our issues are due to weight and stress. I do spend time with Carol off camera quite often but need to step it up now that its hunting season. Thanks again for all the support👊🍻🦅

Hi Maxx I used to work as a falconer you should use a dead squirrel as a lure and put a big lump of meat on the head area cut the meat halfway through which will allow the bird to get a big lump of meat each time it pulls at it so the bird feels like it's got a big reward for catching the squirrel. Enjoy your videos especially the carol ones

Maxx Powell some of the things you said in this video were quite worrisome. You are treating her like a pet that has the equipment to kill. Not as a bird of prey. It’s also a little frustrating that you can’t seem to trust the bird and seem to blame the bird for that. To be honest from watching your post videos she’s doing exactly what you taught her to do. Now I’m no professional when it comes to falconry.
Just know what I know from people who falcon successfully. My two suggestions are not in anyway saying your a bad person. I think you’re a wonderful father and a fun dude. But you should either reach out to your local falconers and have them come over or you go to them with carol and seek out some much needed advice and maybe a few lessons. Or falconry is just not a sport for you. You have a lot of hobbies that you are great at and bring great content to CZcams. You don’t need to be great at every sport so don’t feel ashamed of not being successful at falconry. Anyways. I think you should release the bird back into the wild or seek out lessons from other falconers. Cheers.

Head to the pet store buy a few rabbits, a few mice, live prey animal you have enough land to let them go tie them up so they don't get far and play the game with her like you did with the first live mouse.

Cover your lure with a fur similar to what you are focusing Carol on hunting. I am actually about to harvest some of my rabbits which are American Chinchillas color. Would be close to a gray squirrel if you want me to send you one.

Max, I’m a master falconer and I really want to see you succeed. You and Carol have potential, but you both need training and advice. I’ve flown a variety of birds for ten years, and a female redtail was my first bird. We hunted jackrabbits together, and it was so awesome. You guys can do it too. What is her fat weight and what weight do you fly her at?
Here’s what I think you need to do: you HAVE to get telemetry if you are going to free fly your bird so you can find her if she takes off for whatever reason. Wouldn’t it be nice to not stress out every time you fly her free? Marshall Radio Telemetry is the way to go. Get a transmitter and receiver. Practice finding your transmitter in your yard at home before you fly your bird with it. Make it a game! Ask someone to hide the transmitter, then go find it with the receiver. Your sponsor should be able to teach you how to use it. A Scout radio transmitter would be a good option for your redtail. I love mine and have had great success finding birds with it. The battery life can last for days. The UHF models have a more powerful frequency than the old school version. They even sell gps transmitters! Although they are a lot more expensive and they only last for about 12 hours as far as I know, they are very useful for finding your bird in a snap and analyzing flights (altitude, maximum speed, etc.) You can see her location on your iPhone in real time. Trust me, you’ll feel a lot better about giving your bird more opportunities to free fly and feel A LOT less anxious when you’re out hunting. It is the responsibility of a falconer to keep tabs on their bird. A good falconer always flies with telemetry. Murphy’s Law is always at work. Additionally, you can fly her with an RF and gps transmitter (one on each leg, or tail mount and backpack mount) for even more security/peace of mind. I can post a link, if you want the info. You can also google Marshall Radio Telemetry and find them too.
Also, I highly recommend not hunting your bird at a park where people can watch-people will approach you and that can potentially mess up the whole flight even if your bird is tame. For example, your bird may get startled and take her kill into a tree. Some will be amazed, but some may give you their opinions about how wrong it is to do falconry. Not everyone gets it, and that’s ok, but you need to be aware of it. I’ve heard of strangers intentionally scaring falconry birds away so you can’t get her back, so watch out for that. Instead of dealing with the public, bring her to a field that has game, without people around. Replicate what happens in the wild.
As far as getting her interested in squirrels, you need to enter her on a dead squirrel first. Entering means that you are teaching her that catching a squirrel means dinner time from you. Kind of like how you give her a large reward after she comes to the lure, you trade her off her kill with a nice meal. Start by tying a small chunk of meat onto the head of the dead squirrel so she learns to grab the head when she’s hunting. This will help because those squirrels will bite toes off if given the opportunity. You would be helping your bird out immensely by teaching her to grab for the head. Your first session with her should go like this: ensure she is at hunting weight and hungry. Prep the squirrel with a small chuck of meat tied to the head. Put it in your falconry bag. Make sure you have a good meal for her so you can trade her off the squirrel. Once you’re ready, take Carol out on a creance or free fly her with telemetry. While Carol is on your fist, toss the squirrel on the ground in front of you. She will see the meat on the head and go for it eventually with enough encouragement. When she goes for it, let her eat the chunk of meat, then carefully make your way in. Don’t spook her. In fact, keep that squirrel tied to a line securely in case she decides to carry. If she isn’t spooked, trade her off the squirrel with a nice meal and call it a day. Do this a few times at hunting weight until she consistently quickly responds, then move on to the next step which is getting someone help you drag that squirrel to imitate a chase. You’ll need the help. Don’t let Carol see your friend pull the dead squirrel on the string. Your helped needs to hide so Carol gets the idea that she must chase the squirrel, not a human with a squirrel on a string. You need to do this a few times until she is consistently chasing with a fast response. It won’t be perfect the first few times, but she will get the idea if you are consistent with training. You’ve already trained the bird to come to you for food, now it’s time for her to learn that food goes away from you too. You can use the same squirrel over and over again, just freeze it after a training session.
The next step is to enter her on a live baggie, again, secured so she can’t carry. Let her kill it and break into the squirrel. Make sure she gets fed a larger meal than your earlier training sessions with Mr. Frosty Squirrel. If that goes well, go hunting and have fun! Your sponsor should be helping you with this, so I’m not sure if he is simply not there for you or if you aren’t reaching out for help? If you don’t know what you’re doing, reach out my dude! My sponsor was never there so I had to find help from another falconer if I wanted to be successful. I got very lucky and found another falconer who helped me trap my bird and enter her on bunnies. We successfully hunted jack rabbit for a couple of years before releasing her. I highly suggest doing this training before you go hunting again.
Sidenote- Carol wasn’t attempting a mating ritual on your last video. Red tails squabble over territory all the time and sometimes grab each other to show who’s boss.
Hope this helps you, and good luck. 👍

Elijah I think you are wise in waiting until you have more time to do falconry. When you get a bird, most of your free time will go to it, so good call. You want to do this when you have the time, or else the guilt will set in. I released my redtail because I went to college and I’m so glad I did because she wouldn’t have flown very much while I was in school. It would have been a disservice to the bird, and they certainly aren’t lawn ornaments lol Learn more about the sport in the meantime when you can, and make sure you get a bird appropriate for the time you have and the game where you live. You will be a lot happier keeping those things in mind since you know the bird you get will have the opportunity to do what it’s best at. If you have the opportunity, go to a falconry meet. That’s where I started and it was SO awesome seeing people fly their birds. Most of the time if you ask a falconer if you can join them on a hunt, they will say yes. Wishing you the very best in your falconry journey! :)

Tip from an experienced squirrel hawker: you are never going to get a squirrel hunting her off the fist like people do with rabbits. She has to be in the tree above the squirrel in order for her to stand a chance at catching one. To help teach her some people use a frozen squirrel as a lure draped up in a tree to help teach them what to look for.

I'm just shooting off the cuff here, so please don't be too cruel since I have no real falconry experience, just lots of love and research. Don't Buteos like Carol prefer to sit up high and dive down when they spot prey? Accipiters are the ones that go for the tail chase. Maybe if you can flush a squirrel out when she's sitting on a tree, she'll dive on it. Again, just thinking out loud here. Please don't give up! I don't have the time (or the health, sadly) to be a falconer, so following your adventures is an amazing experience. Thank you for sharing it with us!

  • @PredictableNOVA
    @PredictableNOVA Před 4 lety +4

As some of the falconers including myself have mentioned in your previous video of "experience" with her, start off training her with a lure that is a squirrel. You want to hunt certain types of game? You got to introduce it to her by lure (or in some cases, semi frozen of the body itself tied to a rope). You can't just "expect" for her to know what to hunt right away. As for her current lure, yes she is familiar with it, because you trained her to tackle it, and I'm sure, that if you did hunting on game birds, she'd have more chance of catching the game because the lure and food provided to her (quarry) has helped her to understand of what to catch.
Lower her weight a tad more, and pleaseeeee get a telemetry on her if you have not! A potential lost bird with equipment like that could possibly be a dead bird within minutes/hours/days if caught on the wrong perching spot. the telemetry can at least guide you to her location.
P.S - your teacher should really be with you in the fields/forests on your hunts, to analyze where your going wrong. For me, it's like this: If you can't put the time into training your students, then you are not fit to be a teacher at all.
I'd suggest looking for another teacher who takes it serious with you, to be successful with carol and catch game. If you need some help, or want a falconer to visit and mentor you for the week or two, poke me a message. Good luck.

Maxx, I'm glad you didn't give up falconry, if you're persistent, you'll succeed. Every predator can learn to hunt, you just have to find the right course. I am a falconer with many years of experience, so I know what I'm talking about. Still Caroll has a high weight, if the weight is good, it must attract any movement. Let her kill something that resembles a squirrel. and feed her there to know that if she catches it she will eat a lot. In a pet shop you can buy chinchilla that resembles a squirrel and on your property you can realize it as a real hunting. For red tail is a natural way of hunting from free tracking. You go in the woods and the red tail flies over you and after a few flights you call it on a glove. Do it with Caroll exercise. This gives me enough time to spot the squirrel and prepare to attack. First, just practice overflighting and then set up her practice booty. So Caroll finds out that if he flies over you he will hunt and start to observe the movement below him. Good luck

They learn to hunt from mom, I had the fortune of watching mom teach her young how to hunt a rabbit was amazing. You said you can't hunt a deer? Learn to hunt then pass it on. One quick search shows they hunt from above and crash into prey, so straight from your hand is unlikey what she wants to do, give her time with those squirrels from above.

MAX! First, Carol senses YOUR nervous stress. Calm down. Second, You ALREADY know what you need to do w/her. You said it yourself. Do what you did w/th' rabbit, with a squirrel. Dead, if need be. Stay on your property and just train her to go after squirrels. You got this Max 💪 Everything just doesn't happen right now. Patient persistence will real your reward.

Glad your not giving up!! Look into gps tracker for her works right off an app on your phone so you will know where she is. Maybe try to get a few live rabbits to let go by your property see if she will go after them just a suggestion not sure if that’s legal. I seen a guy use a remote control car to pull a lure at a further distance away from you to train his birds to hunt 👍🏻👊🏻

Max get her over here to the east side of the mountains and spend a weekend on rabbits around okanogan. So there won't be a worry about highway noise and people just your bird and you and prey to stay focused on. I could even get you on some private property or even out on state land just out of okanogan.

I’m sure you can find a better place than a public park to hunt!! Take that beautiful lady to some public land or some open space. I suspect there is too many distractions around for her to focus 100% on killing.

Max do not crop her up. If she fails..give her a little (never a full crop). Try again next day. A dead squirrel for her to feed on is good too. Make a squirrel lure too.

maybe you could try a few more rats? maybe some brown or grey ones, like squirrels. like, maybe one or two more at your house and then try to release one when you're hunting at the park too, so she knows she can hunt food there? hope you have better luck.

  • @codyjamessingleton5098

Yeah i knew you wouldn't quite. Using actual squirrels was what i was thinking to. And you have a pro falconer down below saying how to train her to chase squirrels... Using dead squirrels.
I believe in you. But remember, it's just a bird.
    Awesome flight. Peace.

More hunting scenario for sure. Try getting am RC car to drag the lure so shes not completely associating the food with you. Also give out some kind of signal that there is prey, most falconers yell HO-HO when game is flushed as s signal to the bird. Hopefully Carol gets on game soon, would be a shame to release a non hunting bird.

  • @rasmuspermin1860
