    Bro, for your wife, for your family. Take the post-pardom depression seriously. Don’t let issues get swept under the rug. My wife and I are divorced and if I could go back, among other things, I’d try to address her PPD more directly.
    Love you guys. Hope the best for you both and your kiddos.

    7:20 To paraphrase "You have to be OK with helping the bird kill other animals."
    I don't think you were really clear about this. It doesn't just mean flushing game for the hawk - it means grabbing a squirming rabbit by the head and back legs and pulling hard enough to break its spine. It means rushing in to crush a squirrel's head before it is able to seriously injure your bird.
    It's 100% not just sitting back and watching the bird enjoy the fruits of its labors.

    • @caidenswanke1106
      @caidenswanke1106 Před 5 lety +3

      I disagree with this, a squirrel or bunny will not hurt the bird in the wild, or captivity. The reason you rush over is to but the animal out of it's misery so it doesn't have a long and painful death

    • @TacticalScales
      @TacticalScales Před 5 lety +10

      @@caidenswanke1106 I would disagree with this, I have a scar on my arm from over a year ago now from a rabbit's claws while kicking. I would definitely say a rabbit could injure a hawk. Not to mention the ability to bite back. While none of it may be a real threat, it is still something to be aware of.

    • @laytonmcandrew2877
      @laytonmcandrew2877 Před 5 lety +7

      @@caidenswanke1106 Birds in the wild die all of the time from prey related injuries. It's a big factor in the 75% mortality of first year birds. You'll also see lots of adult birds that are missing toes, and also why most squirrel guys fly their red tails with chaps

    • @jkfeatherranch
      @jkfeatherranch Před 5 lety +3

      @@caidenswanke1106 for a young predator or simply a miscalculation a prey item can definitely mess up a predator. Rabbits and squirrels have teeth and claws and predators do not understand infections.

    • @jasonpatterson8091
      @jasonpatterson8091 Před 5 lety +3

      @Caiden Swanke A rabbit isn't likely to seriously injure a healthy hawk that has a good grip on it (one foot on the head/neck, one on the body), but a big buck rabbit that isn't held well is another story. They can kick and flail hard enough to break tail or flight feathers pretty easily, and it's not impossible for them to bite. It's much smarter for the falconer to get in there and finish the job than to leave it to chance.
      Squirrels are a completely different thing altogether; they're vicious things - vastly stronger and tougher than rabbits and they naturally use their extremely powerful bite as a weapon. They're trying not to die, remember, and they'll take a hawk's toe off to prevent it. Lots of people who fly red tailed hawks (which are large, powerful birds compared to most of the options available to falconers in the US) won't enter their birds on squirrels because they don't want to deal with the inevitable injuries. Wild red tailed hawks don't hunt adult fox squirrels unless really pressed for food, if that tells you something.

    The wrist landing at 17:50 was epic! Thanks. I knew an Falconer who pulled into the gas station I was working at in high school in 1976. Bob Berry was his name from Chester County PA . He exited his ford Bronco which had a perch behind the rear seats, he reached under his seat and pulled out pigeon and grabbing a leg in both hands ripped the bird in half. He placed the pidgin parts under the Falcon and it proceeded to devour the pigeon before my eyes as I filled his tank. Wow beautiful birds.

    Really nice vid and just a piece of advice; bells shouldn´t be hanging that much. Try adjusting the bewit so the bell stands 90° regarding the tarsus, this is specially handy when the bird is hunting and crashes into the bush/prey and helps prevent the bells from hitting back on the birds feet. Regards

    Love the red tail, understand their needs, but I couldn't hunt with them. I have a netherland dwarf bunny (Maggie), a snack for Carol, and our White Shepherd(Ronin) would also like to use Maggie as a chew toy. I looked into Falconry when I was younger decided it wasn't for me. This is a reality check for any who are interested falconry so good on you for the info.
    Was on my way to work one morning and lived out in the country, as I turned onto the main road, going over an overpass, I received the gift of seeing a red tail come through the side rails of the overpass to snag a bunny that was going to dart across the road, so instead of me running over the bunny, it became a red tails dinner. And the red tail flew away with the bunny like it was nothing. It happened so fast, it was actually a beautiful scene.

    Don't tell here I said this, Bro, but your wife is stunningly beautiful. Never miss a chance to just quietly enjoy her. Like a hawk, be discerning of the nuanced little things... a word, an inflection in her voice. Bring her things she would enjoy ... a little story about something you saw .. anything. Like an eagle, bringing a twig for the nest of his mate. Whenever you are introduced or happen to meet another woman, be prepared; in the first couple of sentences, mention your wife. Bringing up the fact that you have a wife and you really enjoy her establishes a base for the conversation. Remember to love and honor each other in your finances. Remember too; love dies in a moment of doubt.

    Please don't tell people to get a parrot, parrots live for decades!!!!
    I inherited my parrot from my GRANDFATHER, and it was 72 years old when it died.
    Parrots are a life long commitment, and can be very nasty.
    My parrot's claws were razor sharp too, I have the scars down my back to prove it.
    He decided to come visit me as I was getting out of the shower.
    That's when we decided that filing his claws would be a great idea, so when I did my nails we did his too.

    Thanks so much for this, its sooooo helpful and I cant wait for next falconry. I totally understand why your doing this reason why NOT video, people have to know the downfalls of doing something before you own a hawk. Any way thanks!!!

    Dude! A drone would totally take your edits to another level with the kind of scenery you have.

    I mean, I'm not squeamish at all, but a box of disposable gloves is really cheap on Amazon (I recommend made out of nitrile)
