  • Ever wonder what its like taking care of, feeding and training a Red Tailed Hawk? Todays video will walk you through some of the every day tasks involved in owning a Hawk. Red tailed hawks and other birds of prey are protected federally under the Migratory Birds Act. The only way to legally own a Red Tailed hawk is to become a licenced falconer. Warning, this video contains scenes of food preparation that some viewers may find disturbing.
More information about why falconry benefits both the birds and the falconer in my previous falconry video: czcams.com/users/edit?o=U&vide...

Grew up hunting with hawks, especially red tails. My father is a master falconer. Retired now. My favorite was our Harris Hawk. A real sweetheart she was.... unless you were small and furry.

    • @chriss1151
      @chriss1151 Před 5 lety +83

We could hunt in city limits since weapons weren't used. Would find areas with plenty of cover for rabbits and a water source. Wear chaps to kick through the brush and briars to flush rabbits while the hawk watched from a tree.
They will always be your friend when you care for them. They won't always come to glove when you want them to but they will on their own time. We have turned many loose and have had them return to say hello... literally screaming at us lol. Years after they were released. Amazing creatures.
Pro tip from dad is don't worry so much about getting your hawk to come to glove without food offered. They will hunt just fine once you have them flying free to you for food. Just be patient if she wants to sit in a tree for awhile or fly to a creek for a bath. Don't feed her the day before your hunt. Will make her want to come back to you that much more. Don't let her eat her kill unless it's you offering it .
Beef heart or deer heart are good food for her. We used to grind up chicken heads for baby kestrels.
      Best wishes to you

No falcons are technically diff but I think they in the same class as hawks accipiters or w/e. Falcons are generally smaller and faster flying. Being the fastest flying animals in the wild lots of them specialize in bird hunting while hawks generally mammals. But both are opportunistic hunters .

@@tori9365 not exactly, hawks are larger and slower in most cases. Falcons are smaller and faster. They are all birds of prey. Peregrine falcons are the fastest and some cities have adopted them to deal with pigeon populations.

I rescued an American kestrial years ago. She had a broken wing from being hit by a car. Long story short, the bird recovered but unable to fly. I respected the bird as a wild animal. I gave her live mice to actually chase on foot in the front room(had it set up for such) for mental stimulation and excerise. She had free run of the house. Which was a fatal error unfortunately. She was left unsupervised, not by me but a friend who was watching her while I was at an appointment. Now one thing I remember really well about Honey was how powerful her talons were. She was tiny but damn I felt her power through those thick welding gloves. I bloww my mind and can't imagine the bigger ones strength. She was a cool animal. Definitely was not a pet but as you said, a companion.

That's the cool and risky part about falconry. At the end of the day, the bird can simply choose to fly away; in fact, most falconry birds are eventually released. Their behavior remains unpredictable, and the sport can be tragic at times, but when it works, it's really a beautiful symbiotic relationship. The bird remains wild and free, and the human gets a pretty awesome experience and wild meat.

Cool video of Carol and your falconry training! Last year, my wife and I went to a marriage retreat with our church at the Renaissance Hotel in Indian Wells, CA near Palm Springs. One day, we saw a guy by the pool with a red tailed hawk. It turns out that the hotel uses raptors/falconry for their pest control program around the hotel. That was cool to find out. If I ever did get into falconry, I'd be interested in trying to work with a peregrine falcon. In junior high, I got to do a research assignment and did a presentation on them in a bio class, I think. I liked learning about them so much that semester that I also wrote a fictional children's story involving peregrine falcons in a creative writingor some English class. It was a dream to go for falconry back then that eventually went away. It's cool to have seen the falconry at the hotel last year and your videos with Carol. Thanks for posting the videos, Maxx!

Fascinating video. I didn't know your bird could digest the whole beak of another bird. It's a lot of work to care for birds of prey and you're doing a great job. I'm an animal lover in general and I rescue dogs. I had five large dogs I cared for at one time. Feeding them an organic real/raw diet and caring for them was daunting. So I empathize with your efforts. Birds however, are awesome - especially the large predator birds like Hawks, Falcons and Eagles, etc. They're just magnificent and beautiful but you need to know what you're doing. 👍🏼 I liked when she was looking down at you from her perch in the garage. Oh yeah, that was soooo cool to watch! I'm planning on becoming a falconer once I move to Georgia. However, I won't be using the hood on my Red Tailed hawk. I'm just a big critic on that! Hawks need their eyes to see things, no different than they need their wings to fly! Not only that, but a hood is small enough that I could easily say "I wouldn't want that thing over MY head". I'm talking about my own head, not the hawk's head. I'm just getting inside the hawk's mind. You know they have feelings too!
Hey, other than that, I was happy to see everything you did with Carol, including the training of flying her to the glove, inside and outside!

Your falconry mentor will disapprove of that for sure. It's probably better to follow a regimen that falconers have been following for thousands of years than to come up with one of your one, especially considering that you have no experience with hawks. Do not anthropomorphize these birds; they are NOT people. Hooding is an important skill for ALL falconers to learn, and you will see why you need to do it when you get a hawk of your own ;)

Hooding can actually be more beneficial to the bird than not hooding. It calms the bird down and decreases stress. Honestly, I'D want a hood over my head instead of having to deal with stress and fear. But, once again. These birds aren't humans. They shouldn't be a bused or hurt, but they don't 'feel' like humans do. Sure, they get stressed or fearful but that's a natural response seen in many animals. The hood is only there to help them. I don't even do Falconry and I know this. it's common knowledge. i think you should really do more research instead of just claiming something is bad because it's how you 'feel'.

Really love your videos and journey with Carol. It's nice to see across the fence, so to speak.
From one bird person to another, though...
Parrots can fly. They should be trained as hunting birds are. Please don't fall for old misinformation or the widespread continuation of it.
Parrots are a victims of their own success due to their secondary mobility, climbing. Any good parrot behaviorist will tell you that flight training all birds is just good sense. Parrots that live a life clipped, are more likely to suffer from mental and emotional problems later in life. Which will manifest as being cage bound, plucking, ect. They live in constant heighten stress level from never being able to escape.
Other commonly kept birds like doves and raptors, can't climb like parrots can. They don't have the zygodactyl feet, hooked bill, or neck muscles required for it. Clipping them is to remove all but walking.
I do wonder...You say you like to keep her unhooded. You like her personality even if it causes you a bit of trouble. But others don't... Control is more important then the birds right to be flawed but loved and experience life. Clipping parrots is often like that. It's about control at the cost of something else. Often with misplaced intentions, good or otherwise.
