- In this episode i take Carol hunting for rabbits at a somewhat sketchy location. I may have received bad Intel because i didn't see a single sign of rabbits there what so ever. It wasn't a total waste of time however, Carol started following me around the field are started displaying some characteristics of a decent hunting bird. Hopefully these new habits can carry over into the next hunt.

Hey there-- just a few words from a fellow falconer who's been flying red-tails and other raptors for well over a decade. I hope my words may be beneficial in some way:
As far as trees go in the field, I don't think you can get 'too high' of one for a RT to perch on. Red-tails benefit from tall trees, especially when pursuing cottontails. Unless flying directly off the fist in an open environment, most falconers encourage their birds to take high perches.
The way Carol rather aggressively approaches your glove in the field without your cue, coupled with her vocalizations and behavior, I would highly encourage you to redirect feeding away from you, abstain/use the glove for recall less frequently, and instead throw the tidbit to the ground and/or utilize the lure solely. If a bird is rewarded for coming to the glove when not called, or is fed off the fist too frequently, you can run into considerable aggression issues-- not fun! Just a friendly word of advice.
Rabbits are a commendable quarry to pursue with a red-tail, and take considerable effort to be successful on. I encourage my apprentices to scout fields well before the season starts; also, I'll echo what others have said here about the usefulness of hunting apps and land permissions. If you can, get those things taken care of early before the season starts, and you'll be slaying rabbits in no time!
I humbly disagree with you in regards to squirrel hunting. I hunt squirrels with red tails almost exclusively here in the USA, and squirrels are an incredibly cognitive quarry that requires falconer and hawk to work in tandem just as much as (if not more than) rabbit hawking takes. Where rabbit hawking is rather one dimensional and straightforward (flush, flight, kill), squirrel hawking can take literal hours chasing a squirrel up, down, all around you through the trees. The hawk learns how to position itself and how the falconer's actions (tugging vines, hitting brush), relate to the squirrel's movements. It is amazing to see a red-tail progress through a season flown on squirrels, and from season to season. The way in which falconer and hawk grow together through that time, especially when flying on quarry such as squirrels, is rewarding and something I cherish.
Last but not least-- in regards to recieving hate: no one deserves hate, and I am sorry if you feel you have been experiencing it from the falconry community. I cannot speak for all falconers, but I can understand upset falconers' frustrations in regards to the manner in which you post your falconry-related videos. I do not think the majority of falconers who are upset with your falconry videos are upset purely because you produce this content, but rather that you are a learning apprentice and some of what you say and do in your videos may be considered misinformation and/or misguided (for example, having Carol untethered in the house with windows present, etc.). We have all been apprentices and have all made our fair share of mistakes, but when those mistakes are made available for all of the public to see, it may reflect badly on such a small community that some folks don't understand-- especially when presented via an informative/authoritarian perspective, as I've understood your videos to suggest. Falconers are understandably protective over falconry and the way in which it is displayed to the public, and I think that this is the source of why you may be recieving hate. I do not think it is a jealousy issue at all, but that is just my humble opinion.

The bird is being flown on the light side . The more confident you get you'll find yourself flying her at higher weight.

Rabbits are typically out at dawn and dusk, not so much the middle of the day. Sorry, but timing-after location-is the most important thing.

They are hiding in the brush and grass in the middle of the day that’s why he is walking through it. They aren’t trying to hunt rabbits they can see in the open.

I think it’s important that you build or create a bond with the falconry community because I think if you get out on a few hunts with some other hawkers You’ll be able to kind of set the bar for yourself and have a little better expectation come to New York with Carol and walk around and hunt with us!!! Maybe ask the haters to help you and they could also speak on your Vlog overall education is a good thing and should be encouraged.
Also something I noticed in this video... is that you might have to be a little bit more of Carol’s bird-dog you can’t stick to a trail you actually have to get in to brush piles and push through them and stomp on all over them to flush out the rabbits. I have a pretty good brush pile on my property and I think I’d be able to scare a rabbit out so maybe I’ll make a quick video and kind of just show you.
But you can build that partnership with Carol still with squirrels because you can rattle the trees really shake on vines and stuff like that which can rattle up squirrels and kind of flush them out so she’ll see that she can depend on you to help push them around so she’ll have a better access at them.
One thing I noticed through my apprenticeship was every falconer I spoke to had their own way to do things. It can make you feel like you can't do anything right. What works for some people and some birds won't work for others.
For me and many others, the bird is first priority. I'd say from these videos that Carol looks happy and healthy. Your training is going very well. Sure, some mistakes were made but who hasn't made mistakes with their first bird while learning? You'll do even better with your next bird, don't let the negativity sway you from loving the sport!
It's great you're able to show the positive side of falconry. It'd be great for people to understand the sport better so falconers don't have to worry so much about doing what they love.

Could you hear me saying to get off the trail?? Every time Ive gone out with my falconer friend.....we are waist deep in weeds......and blackberry and raspberry thorn thickets are always boutiful in rabbits.......be rdy for thorns though.

We have tons of rabbits up here on Whidbey island, problem is we also have tons of Raptors as well. Literally while I was watching this video the wife came running in asking me for a camera because there was 2 bald eagles out back. My dogs and cats are constantly bringing me dead rats, mice, birds and yes rabbits. Just last week the cat brought me a rat and a bird (finch) the same day. So I'd say bring Carol up here as there is plenty of prey but know we have an abundance of eagles, red tail hawks, owls and falcons so you make the call.
Rabbits love junk piles. Squirrels is pretty much all I ever hunt with my red tails.

Man, Carol is absolutely beautiful. The close up shot you got of her is amazing. Her eyes are gorgeous and her beak looks as if she could rip anything to shreds. You guys have really bonded. My husband and I own birds and Carol truly is bonded because at any time she can choose to leave but her intelligence tells her this is a great partnership. Nice job Carol, we all know your first true kill is going to be fantastic!
I am now an apprentice. I came across your videos in January of this year while studying for the exam and love seeing all of your content! I still have to build my mew and pass inspection to be official but I have been on a handful of squirrel hunts with Red-Tails and Harris's and I was not at all left with the impression that the falconer is not contributing to the hunt. Just about every slip I've seen involved the falconer or a friend pulling vigorously on a muscadine vine (I'm in GA) or nailing a nest with a sling shot to flush the squirrel into motion and most involved us chasing after the squirrel along with the hawk as they are incredibly well suited to loosing a pursuer in the woods, especially after they bail out of the top of an 80' pine tree which is an impressive feat to see.
Experiencing the pursuit contributed to my decision to committing to falconry after being a hopeful observer for many years. I have 3 sons and they all deer hunt with me. I took them on a falconry hunt and learn that our great state DNR organized and they absolutely loved stomping through the woods pulling on vines and flushing out squirrels. It was a much more active style of hunting than deer hunting. I still love to deer hunt, but falconry has captured my boys' hearts and interest and I am more than happy to finally get to pursue a method of hunting I've admired since I was a boy when I first read My Side of the Mountain. Max I wish you luck in your hunting pursuits and look forward to seeing Carol's first kill. Don't let the "purists" who think they know everything get you down. This entire sport is about constantly learning and we are at the very beginning of that journey. Also, curious if you got your drone working again. I noticed some drone shots in this vid and was curious if they were shot after the dip in the river...
I flew a Red-Tail that would go up on a soar when the wind was right. Scared me at first, but after a bit, it was a great way to cover a lot of area... and spectacular to watch them "stoop". That works best for more open space, but don't be afraid if a red-tail wants to get higher. Good luck!

While your walking trying to flush the rabbits one thing that helps to get them to flush is every few steps pause, and be really quiet. When you go to move is when the rabbit will bust. If a predator is about to pounce it gets really still and quiet. Your next sound will be what sets it off. Also, if you’re not seeing rabbit droppings, there probably aren’t many around. This has been a great series to follow. Hope this helps.

My grandad used to do falconry when he was younger, I remember looking at all of his old pictures of his birds whilst I was growing up, gave me a real appreciation of these majestic animals. Man screw those haters, I think you’re doing a great job so far. Hunting is about a whole lot more than the kill. Keep at it, we learn from every “so called failure” . Enjoy the experience and when you do connect it’ll mean so much more.
A couple things, I’m studying to get my apprentice falconer license, in my area (Southeastern US) squirrels are our primary pray. Squirrel Hawking is very challenging, and we definitely develop that bond between the bird and the falconer. I’m a 33 1/2 year career firefighter, currently working for a vary busy South Metro Atlanta department, don’t let the haters get you down. I’ve also been a hunter for as long as I can remember, it’s very refreshing to see younger guys that didn’t grow up hunting, learning to hunt.
Regardless of finding prey, love watching Carol. She's such a cool bird. Thanks for posting these vids.
It took me 3 years to get my first deer. First year, I was a noob and made mistakes. Second year, I had fewer opportunities and erred on the cautious side instead of being aggressive. Third year, everything seemed to work out. And it was well worth the wait. Don't be discouraged! Keep doing what you're doing and don't let a bunch of nitwits keep you from making videos.

Red-tailed Hawk populations increased throughout much of their range between 1966 and 2015, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey. Partners in Flight estimates a global breeding population of 2.3 million with 75% spending some part of the year in the U.S., 24% in Canada, and 21% in Mexico. The species rates a 6 out of 20 on the Continental Concern Score. Red-tailed Hawk is not on the 2016 State of North America's Birds Watch List.

I love the hawk videos. Carol is the reason I subscribed. I do a lot of rabbit hunting without dogs. I have a couple tips to try and help you be more successful. Rabbits are fairly nocturnal so try hunting right after sunrise. By late morning to early afternoon there is a good chance they will be in their dens. Also cooler days with lots of sunshine and not much wind and there is a good chance they will be out trying to soak up the sun to try and warm up. I hope this helps. Great vids Maxx. I once watched a vlog where these two guys walked their birds on top of a long bo staff with a perch that they carried around. It always provides a place for them to sit and kept them close. They did wear hats for obvious reasons but it was pretty cool. Food for thought.
I don't think anybody can say anything negative without just wanting to be a jerk... I like the fact that you have shown me a new way of hunting... Never did like setting in a tree stand and waiting for a deer to walk by and give me a good excuse to shoot a gun, I can do that without freezing my ass off at 5 in the morning... You need to get into the thicker weeds. Rabbits will sit still and let you walk right passed them. You need to beat every lump of high grass and around the base of trees or shrubs. Rabbits are harder to flush then you think they would be. Keep at it you will get the hang of it.
Early morning and last light is when the rabbits will be more active. Rabbits here in NY tend to stay in or near really thick bush and fields until dark.
Its just going to be that much more exciting when you get a rabbit!

You might look into getting the OnX hunting app.. It really helps you differentiate between public and private land.
I would go with Basemap. It is like OnX but with new tech and more filters. If you already own OnX, you can xfer waypoints. Plus they are local PWN peeps.
Squatchland Adventures no doubt. Which ever app prevents wandering onto a NW meth farm and mountain folk going all deliverance on your ass. I'd call it a win. But just in case if ya ever hear a couple banjos dueling it out. Run! And hope Carol keeps up. 👍
Don't pay attention to the negativity. I thoroughly enjoy these episodes. Been fascinated with falconry since I was about 9 years old and now I'm too old and have too many other hobbies to get involved, so I'm living it through your videos. Keep up the good work and take good care of that bird.
I'd recommend a hunting app for your phone that shows property boundaries. I like the ONX app, I move around alot and constantly need to learn new hunting areas, the maps help a ton and will even tell you who owns the private land so you can ask permission.
There are tons of falconers on CZcams. Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah, for example. don't let the haters get you down!
Rabbits are by nature nocturnal I’ve had most success very early morning or just before dark. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend dusk tho because if anything goes wrong it’s going to be dark, happy hunting
waiting on is actually soaring, but that knitting at semantics. Check the fields first for game signs, fallowing is a trained behavior , so do some work where that is the objective . Get a couple beaters, to help push the rabbits out.

You need to find a local rabbit hunter to join you. Somebody who has access to some prime terrain to hunt and can help 'jump' some rabbits for the bird. There must be some resources close by.
Finding somebody willing to help you flush game would be valuable and enhance the learning curve!

I agree ignore what people say, continue teaching potential prospects that are looking to get into falconry. How much time do you spend with the hawk daily?
Maxx Powell how about from the first catch until then, I’ve watched your video but I never heard about a time frame of time spent with the hawk.
Max, with dogs used to hunt prey they use machines with a lure to simulate the running of prey and teach dogs to chase successfully. It also builds stamina so they get less tired. Perhaps you could rig something up or ask your mentor? For dogs we call it lure coursing
It’s a common mistake for apprentices to do is not do any scouting and have several good rabbit spots of your own, or finding the spots on your own before you trap a bird. Here’s a hint do ask for spots but ask what habit to look for.
Another mistake apprentices make is a red tail is not a Harris hawk. They don’t follow like a puppy dog. Once your hawk get in a good high spot work the cover back to your bird.
Most important scout scout scout scout. The more game you can flush for your bird the more fun you will have.
Maxx Powell are you thinking of trying an Oregon jack trip? I know the Wa season is over. I used to live in eastern Wa thankfully back when you could find rabbits. Now a lot of it has been built on and from what I hear the rabbit numbers are very low.

I truly dislike people like that because they act like they just like that, over night, bam. Also, alot of people don't show the part you're showing which makes you more honest.
Keep at it, you'll find game eventually, and she'll miss it, but if you keep trying sooner or later you'll connect and she'll get going for you. Also, white fur can come from the belly of a wild rabbit.

Retired CF vet, loving your videos. I'm about to get into falconry up in Ontario, and what you were saying about the community getting angry over what you're doing, mimics what my potential mentor was saying. He's done a bunch of fund raisers and brought his birds out to help draw crowds, he's done live interviews on news stations, he has a CZcams channel. He's banned from the falconer's club. If I even mention his name, I'll be banned. It's just insane how stuck in their ways some of these guys are.

Just ignore the haters you are licensed and are actually attempting to hunt with the bird. you are perfectly legal. the purest can fuck off they should be aiding you. you are a beginner most of these people probably started extremely young and have had years to learn and master the skill needed for this sort of hunting keep training with her and keep building that bond.

Im no rabbit pro, but i have between 3-8 in my yard everyday. Theres a clear pattern i noticed after some stealthy recon. eat-poop-repeat...it starts dawn, noon and then dusk ... then they start again..eat poop...repeat. Or... maybe they start at dusk eat-poop-repeat.... then dawn,noon repeat... yikes... so much poop... any how... the lawn looks great in the summer and theres alot of poopin’ goin on...😶

You should try your hand at duck hunting. I don't know what migration patterns are like in your area, but in my experience it's a higher rate of success compared to deer or rabbit and it's tons of fun.

Time 11:05 is he using the slitted leather straps on the hawks feet? Arnt you only suppose to use the non slitted ones when hunting? I see what looks like a hole in the bottom of the strap when he holds the hawk up closer to the camera.
It would have been nice to have a helper walk through the bushes for you to flush out the rabbits.!
