I'm QUITTING Falconry after this.

- I think this is the last straw. I have always been an overly optimistic person which usually does me well but at times can blindly lead me to make mistakes and occasionally allows me to drag out the inevitable. I so badly want to be a successful falconer but have failed to properly train Carol to hunt with me. Unfortunately the events that unfold in this video are further proof that it is time to let Carol go and to take a break from the challenging sport of falconry.

Seriously the saddest video I've ever had to make. But I anticipated this and it's been a long time comming. My videos dont accurately portray the pressure I'm under to get Carol to preform. Unfourtunetly things just havent worked out with her, it's my own fault and now I am morally and legally obligated to let her go back to the wild before she becomes completly dependent on humans for food. This is deffinitly one of my greatest failures and greatest disappointments. Il be extremely sad to see her go and I'm sure I'll lose a ton of subscribers along with her, however I got to do what's right for Carol. Being held in captivity without the ability to fulfill her natural hunting drive would just be wrong. I'm so grateful to everyone that had my back when I took up this challenging sport, and I look forward to my next challenge and hope you guys will stick around for future adventures🍻🦅
Maxx Powell Do you think you might try again with a new bird in the future?
don't give up man. try again in a couple years
I’m here to stay bub
Yo Bro, i had a thought. Training, A battery radio control car wirh prominent markings. Put a mouse by the car at home a few times, and walk her ro where you let her off. Then out there, guide her with the car. I think you know best way to do this.
Talk to other falconers. Go from there. Of course, each animal in a species has its own attitude and personality. Chickens have their own way of things and it appears from watching other falconer channels that their birds are slightly different. Take a day or two then make a choice after processing others recommendations. peace.
Dear Maxx,
I love your videos, all of them, but originally started watching your channel for your Carol capture video... You are already an excellent falconer. I am a licensed apprentice in Rhode Island, on the far side of the pond, and can honestly say you inspired me to pursue falconry well before I was licensed. I caught my first rabbit this past weekend with my first bird....I...Know...Your...Pain. I went out 2-3 dozen times hunting before I caught anything. Very very frustrating. I too considered letting my bird go for a time. But, you shouldn't my man. You will advocate for the well-being of that bird better then Anybody else! Because you are inexperienced yourself you doubt everything you're doing. And the bird is an inexperienced hunter as you caught her as an early season Juvenile. Trust your sponsor's advice, that's all you can do. One thing is bothering me though... You said in this video that you can't just go out in your yard fly her there...Well why not? I see beautiful brush.. Nice conifer tree-lines. And...it's yours. Your family is there your dogs can run around and flush. I think you're overthinking it and letting your lack of hunting success get to you. It will come...in time. Plus, the added pressure of getting footage for your channel... that's gotta be a big one. Screw the camera my man, go out, and relaxxxxx. Don't think you need to get that first kill for the world to see. So much added pressure and it IS a bond. Your bird feels some of that too. Allow your focus to be solely on the bird and just spend a day watching her do her thing in a familiar area. Besides, it'd be a great story if the cops get called to your house again by the neighbors watching you fly a raptor lol. Cops show up, you're chillin', wife and kids,... and bird. XD Your heart is in the right place my man. Another bird messed with your hunt in the vid, you're flushing solo, weathers abit rough...that wasn't really bad behavior on the bird's part. Don't feel bad for giving necessary food after a bad hunt either. Alone, just for the act of hunting she should be rewarded for. Positive Reinforcement right! She was abit reluctant to come down to the glove, even for a big reward. Try, if that happens again, dropping her weight a half ounce and using the lure. Far less pressure on the animal to go to the lure as opposed to the glove. Once shes on the lure, let her eat from it, transfer her to the glove with a tidbit, and you're golden. I had to lure my boy down today away from a mated pair of RTs. Took 45 minutes and I chased him a half mile lol. Any day we go home with our birds is a good day. Don't give up! -Much Love from A Big Fan in the smallest state!!

Hopefully he sees this! Loved this comment
@@jakebhunt954 thanks man
Great comment, thanks for taking the time to encourage a fellow falconer.
Great comment! Waving a hand from East Providence.
I’d honestly talk to your sponsor/mentor and trust his advice .
I agree, please don't give up on Carol and yourself!
Exactly, everyone on CZcams thinks they're a vet, falconer, athlete blah blah, take some real advice.
I don't think you're as bad as you think you are.
This video in a way is humbling, it shows your insight and priorities towards self esteem and disappointment. I'm here watching your videos because I appreciate you and your family.
Max don't give up. I noticed when you have had issues in the videos it is when there are alot of distractions. Maybe your sponsor might know of an area that is not around the trafic and people plus other birds. Please you are educating alot of people. Chin up talk with your sponsor and maybe a few others in the community to see if they can help you. Both you and Carol have been stressed with everything. You guys need to get back to the way you was last year. Please don't give up. I love you and Carol videos.
In my 20's I was a Falconer. I reached the Intermediate Falconer level in California and held that license for several years. Early on, I had two Redtails; CJ and Josie at different times. I ran into many of the problems you have had with your bird Carol. Not enough time and my job which stationed me on Angel Island made it difficult to hunt. I eventually hacked both of these birds back to the wild successfully and though I missed flying them I knew it was better for them. Whatever you ultimately decide, you might consider working with a Rehab Center for Birds of Prey that is amenable to a falconer working their birds for rehab. I did this with UC Davis for many years and helped them rehab and hack back several Redtails, Golden Eagles, a Prairie Falcon and a Tercel Kestrel that was death from above on earthworms. It was fun, rewarding and I got to maintain my skills with birds Unfortunately my district Game Warden retired and I got assigned to two new Game Wardens that didn't like Falconers much. Being I had no bird at the time they would not renew my license that I had for nearly 6 years. I was about to move to the Master License. Due to their insensitivity and life getting in the way I have never gone back to Falconry. The law at the time said if you didn't maintain your intermediate license you had to start at an apprentice level again.
I do miss falconry but it does take a bunch of time. The nice thing about rehab was I got to work with many different bird species and temperaments and once a bird was returned to the wild I could take a break from it. I do miss falconry and being around the birds. To this day everytime I seen one of these beautiful creatures on the wing I get chills. Cheers and best of luck.
California did that because they game every single thing worth any money. You are right, they don't give a damn about nature out there.
The fact that you went after her for how long you did, to me, says you still want to try. You want to get her to where you can both hunt. I hope you both get there & truly don't think you'll give it up. Your sponsor should be able to tell you what's up.
I was doing liberty training with my horse & there was a lot of time she turned & ran off in the beginning. She was just being a horse, just as Carol is being a hawk. It's nothing personal! It doesn't mean you're a crumby trainer, or that she's an awful bird. It means you're learning. Keep it up! Don't give up!
great advice thank you for your comment
No look at the mass of shit in the bottom of the cage that should tell you everything
If you let her go on your property maybe she'll stick around or come back to visit. Or maybe I've watched too many after school specials. lol
Josh Owens I don’t know what the laws are but they might require her to be released so many miles away from the residence. I think he’d also want to release her somewhere that has an abundance of food, shelter, and minimal competing predators.
i know people that release them close by and they continue to come back when times are tough. also, many want them close because you don't just kick em out, you wean them off until they don't constantly come back
My Dad had a falcon named Swede and he was released he stayed in our valley and would do fly bys with his mate and would also return and help train the the new batch of babies every year when they were learning to fly. He would even bring in food and feed the little buggers. My Dad has past a bit over 6 years ago but Swede is still out there and I am sure he does his fly bys still on the old ranch looking for him.
@@t2fast this little story reminds me of Hachi .. love it
I wild hack a lot of my red tails over the summer. Turn them loose in May, have a feeding station where I put out a chipmunk, or what ever I have once a week or two and then take them back in during Aug, they develop a lot less bad habits. More than likely will get two Cooper’s hawk chicks from the nesting pair in my backyard spring 2021.
"I bet they'd love to see Carol...... I can't let them see Carol"
hahahahaha
Dont give up soo soon pal. It just looks like your bird needs some reconditioning and drop a few more grams... over the year i learned that if you teather her on to a screen perch and let her sit there all day and take her out to hunt in the evenings.... she will more likely perform better because she know its gona be night time soon. Dont ever take her out of her mew and go straight to hunt, she will only relax in the tree watching games and everything.... u want her out teather on the screen perch and let her sit and look around bate to get to moles, rats, mouse, birds, etc all day.... lastly take her out and she will be desperate to kill something.
With her attitude ripping the meat off your glove is normal for a high-strong weight bird... drop a few more grams i mean by the 10s gram. Let her sit on your glove during feeding session and toss small tidbit on the ground and encourage her to fly down to eat it... then do the same thing with her being in the tree... once she come down to eat the meat u toss on the ground then call her up to your gloves.. repeat that and you will be stress free next time... (meat tossed on the ground she trust u won't cheat her - like: "when i came down to the meat at your glove, u only gave me a small piece, what happened to the big chunk i saw....! 😠" ) hahaha
I enjoy your videos keep it up sport.
I take my bird out of the mew and straight to a hunt 80% of the time and he's on point and ready to hunt.
This may be one of your best videos, I know you may not think that, but this is a chapter in a story... a true, raw and honest chapter in a story...
I truly value CZcams because it gives me access to authentic, un-produced stories of humanity.
But channels like yours are getting much harder to find as many creators seem to value commercial success over “being real”.
Thank you for sharing your life’s peaks and valleys, it’s hard to do and you do it very well.
Keep doing what your doing, people value honestly, even though they might not convey that in the comments.
keep being real and you will have no where to go but up.
Maxx,
I just want to say thank you for this video and your work with Carol.
I have an old friend who took up falconry this year, and of course by watching him I got the bug right away. After he trapped his kestrel, it was obvious that there is a real challenge associated with this sport, so I started doing my homework regarding apprenticeship, bird choice, training, etc, etc. I even got to know a licensed falconer that would possibly consider sponsorship.
Then one day I found your channel and started watching closely. I noticed right away that you are pretty involved in a lot of different things, and I was curious how falconry would fit in - because, as you said, its a kind of a lifestyle - and my workload is very similar to yours... 5 to 6 days of 8 to 12 work hrs per day, wife and kids at home, three businesses, a LOT of fun hobbies, and the list goes on. Honestly, I have been trying really hard to convince myself that I can do it, so I have been watching you more than others - as my test subject.
Yes, I have viewed many of the professional/old-hat falconers on CZcams... and yes, I have learned a TON from them (I mean, there is some GREAT stuff on here). But really, to see a guy share a "first bird" falconry experience from day one, getting it right, getting it wrong, acknowledging the struggles, etc. is just as important as the rest. I hope you get that. If folks are paying attention, there is real value in it.
All that aside, I am sure that if you decide to continue working with Carol it will be fresh and new. You seem like the type of guy that can rise to the challenge. But if you decide to step away from falconry (for now), it will be based on what is right for you and best for Carol. I think it's a win either way.
Also...
I'll still be watching, whether it's flying a red tail or a para-motor. You have a great channel!
Thanks!
Max,
This was weight issue. The other birds being there was also a distraction. You should continue with the drag line, use a rabbit this time. Please work with your sponsor. He definitely should have been with you on your first hunt. Carol has not yet experienced you flushing game for her. She did not understand what you were doing. Do not give up, I under your frustration, but you are so close. Hang in there. Get help from your sponsor. Cheers.
Terrible advice...his primary concern was promoting something on You Tube. Seems like a good guy but he needs to participate in falconry only for himself and the hawk, not likes and comments.
yup!
Don't give up bro! Learn from this stressful event and keep going forward! Cheers!
Sad to see Maxx, I followed a while back when I found you from the Carol content because it was a new interest to me at the time and you are a very entertaining personality to watch and learn from so while I understand the circumstances it's a bummer she'll probably have to go free 😔 When is the season over or when do you need her to get a catch by? I know this venture was stressful and negative but perhaps one last attempt near home can either turn things around or at least be an optimistic return to the wild nearby. Who knows, maybe she sticks around.. your new place is pretty awesome! Cheers for the content man, I'll be here regardless if Carol leaves and even if you don't continue the journey next season. Best wishes for you dude!
She doesn't want any of the actions for several reasons:
You haven't trained her on a squirrel lure, and her weight is not at hunting. Even though you trapped her in the wild, remind yourself you got her as a juvenile, a bird that recently left her nest, still developing of what to catch. You yourself as a falconer, are supposed to introduce her the prey you want to catch with her. Some naturally catch on, and some need's more time. Right as the moment you got her free flying, you should of introduced her to the prey you want her to catch right after. It's unfortunate that Carol has not caught, but maybe this experience with Carol will make you understand better the next time you decide to resume back in falconry and trap a new bird. Who knows, maybe the next bird you decide to catch, might be more experienced then Carol.
I agree
Weight down to hunting using a squirrel lure and feeding squirrel if possible, trap a live squirrel, take her to a big field where the squirrel has no tree to escape to and let them both go.
Red tails don't have a hunting weight
It’s not a failure! Falconry is not easy. Just keep at.
Oh man.. I'm glad you were able to get her back. Don't be so hard on yourself. Yes, falconry is incredibly challenging, but if there's someone who can take a difficult challenge and look it face to face, it's Max Fuckin' Powell! You've been nothing but an inspiration in so many aspects and we all know you're capable of far more than you're giving yourself credit for. Take a second, regroup, and get back to conquering your reality brother! You've got my support and I'm rooting for you all the way!
Peace & Love from Missouri -Todd #dontforgettolive
I take my dog to that park all the time and see those larpers! They are there every single weekend. A dedicated bunch. Small world.
I can understand that you have been under tremendous stress..with Carol...don't look at this as a failure my friend...you are a busy person and you have 15 spinning plates in the air at once...Letting Carol Free is the best thing for her...I have enjoyed your falconry adventures sincerely- and I'm a fan..I love your home life and positive attitude...we are subbed With or Without Carol...take care!
I'm thinking falconry demands much more time and energy than your able to give. Letting her go is probably for the best. I'm sure you gotta know that every asshat out there that sees you breaking into their sport was gonna scream "your doing it wrong" so it doesn't surprise me folks are calling fish & game on you. Well good luck in whatever decision you make.
Awesome video Max. You’ve come a long way with Carol and if you do decide to let her go, at least you can walk away knowing you enjoyed the experience and you did your best. Not a lot of people will pursue falconry, so consider yourself lucky. Thanks for sharing the journey man 🤙
What ever decision you decide to make with carol we all stand behind you. I am also a man of many hobbies and i have noticed over the past couple years that if i dial down the amount im into the more effort i can put into specific ones. Its overall improved my quality of living. Keep up the great videos, and don't get caught up on the details.
I really feel for you, I totally understand the dilemma you’re facing. I’ll support you and your channel with what ever direction you choose to go in.
You're juggling too many hobbies my man, plus your career. Being a falconer alone while holding a career is tough. You need to dedicate yourself to being a falconer or you're doing yourself and your bird a disservice. You'll make the right choice, but I'm afraid Carol is too dependent on humans for food now to be let go.
country clubbin that’s not how it works with raptors btw. They do not become fully dependent on humans and retain their wild side for life because these are not domesticated birds. That would only occur if the bird is injured and can no longer hunt on its own. So when he does release her back into the wild, she won’t be interested in other humans and try to come to them for food like most mammals would do. She will simply be just another wild raptor that avoids human contact and finds us threatening.
Diana Papanova so wrong what you said. I have been doing falconry a long time and if you dont hunt them enough they will become totally dependent on humans. This guy is a total amateur and you can tell he just throws his bird food without making the bird work for it. That’s why it dosent listen when he takes it out.
His bird he will have to hack it back to the wild in order for it to be wild again. You know what hacking means?
Nicholas Meixler why do you watch him ?
That looked really emotionally draining. I’m sorry about your struggle. Whatever you do from here is your choice.
Amazing video, Maxx! So real and I loved hearing your raw thoughts and emotions. Best of luck with making what will be a very difficult decision.
I recommend wedding your bird to the lure. Feed it a substantial amount of food on the lure, every day after training or instead of training - until the bird knows the lure means a nice meal. You can then use the lure to recall your bird from a longer distance. Use the glove recall for initial tidbit training, but the lure is what you need for recall in the field. Your sponsor should have taught you that, it is very important.
You live and you learn maxx. We have your back always! cheers to your future adventures and keep moving forward.

Don't give up keep training nothing comes easy
Respekt for showing the journey. I hop you can get back into it at some point in the future. Falconry is a fookin TOUGH sport.
I must say that was so heart pounding and breaking at the same time. You did something that most people wouldn't even have tried! So congrats and don't give and keep moving forward.
Bro. Take a step back. I think you’re being to hard on your self. ❤️🙏
From the bird or from his emotional issues
Aloha Maxx...
What an interesting journey.
Thank you for sharing.
You do great work - I respect your path and appreciate your videos.
Very interesting...
Hey I think your doing great considering all things!!! Your continuous dedication to Carol is amazing and I want you to feel comfort that I am one of those Carol subscribers and I will 100% stay regardless of what happens here. I hate to see you so down your such an awesome person keep up your hard work, don't let this bring you down you have great content! Keep me updated with how things went with your sponsor, I'm curious to hear what he thinks you should do⁉️😍
I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I can't...
Either way, this must have been a difficult decision for you. Good on you for putting Carol first. Maybe you can get back into it when you have more time on your hands. I know a lot of people are going to be sad about this, and I'll miss falconry content. But you made the right decision.
Proud of ya brudda. Takes a big set of shoes to know when enough is enough. If you can’t commit 100% of hobby time to carol then maybe it is time to split. Be thankful for the time and experience. Great content
The most thrilling video I have seen so far!! So many people said it here but you truly are dedicated to this falcon and have given it all so I also say don’t give us and keep training her. However if you and your mentor say/agree otherwise based on what is best for her, falcons or any other birds are meant to be out there in the wild safe environment. Thx for the educational vids on falcons and all the rules (ex you cannot just let her hang around your house free) around caring for these animals. Have a great one!
Damn, that's sad. Well sometimes things don't work out, I'm sure you'll find something else to go after! Good luck dude!
Maxx, great video... you have introduced falconry to a new generation. You are teaching through success and failure in a real way that few have done. All watched through your emotional roller coaster, its clear you really care about that bird and the sport. You created training videos to show potential new falconers a responsible example the journey.
You'll have your day bud! Keep working hard for it, these things never come easy. You're definitely well driven for it, there's not a lot of people who could go as far as you have. Patience and perseverance buddy, time will be on your side. You've certainly shown a lot of humility and it's absolutely key for people to understand if they want to get into falconry, your videos are important and it would suck to see you quit out for good. You cannot fail, you can only learn. Take this bad experience and use its lessons to your advantage. I want to see Carol nab a squirrel, I don't care if it's next month or next year, Carol will hunt for you dude, I'm sure she'll want to bring you a special xmas gift after all you've done for that bird! Just keep trying!
Brother you need to get more into the falconry community, go out with friends who hunt squirrels, have your sponsor engaged, have him feel his keel, dial in the weight. There are a ton of people who will help you in this sport, all you got to do is ask. If your sponsor isn’t involved, get a new one. Your supposed to do poorly, your an apprentice, but you’ll learn, and you’ll get better. You just have to show some grit in this sport, get humbled and reach out to badass falconers
Great job video taping it all. So glad you were able to get her back! I would agree these vids are educational for me. I never knew about falconry before watching your channel. I love seeing how beautiful she is and learning about their characteristics.
I might be being selfish, but I hope you don’t give up. I just found your channel and really enjoy the connection between you too
I’ve never done this before but I will be getting into it soon and my opinion is that to be a good falconer you have to be a person that loves nature first, just being out there is a good day, and secondly I think to stay committed as a falconer it helps if you are already a hunter, after you become a seasoned Hunter that can consistently put down game every year, a rifle and a bow get kind of boring and sometimes you want a little more adventure and something new, I am up for the challenge. PS. I subscribed brother, god bless you.
I can't believe you got her back ! Awesome persistence. Its so stressful losing a bird , of course you'd rather quit than go through that again. I just started following.
Maxx .Appreciate your Dedication and Heart for Falconry. You Showed Your Commitment by Waiting and Doing All you Did to get Carol to Come Back.I Commend You for a Great Video and Really Enjoy All the Things that you Do to Live Life to its Fullest.
I was worried when she was near that eagle nest, its nesting season for them and they don't like trespassers very much. Glad you got her back and she's safe at least.
Plz Maxx, don't lose hope. Stay positive... you have truely become a HUGE inspiration to me. after i had heart surgery at 18 yr, you have shown me that I can still have a life and do great things.
You 100% being educational I though I wanted to train and you put me in my place. I learned to stick with lives stock and K9s. Id rather halter train a bull then train a hawk. I learned im not made out for it and that AWESOME. Im glad I learned by watching you and I didnt blindly try and have an animal suffer due to me being uneducated.
You should be able to have a lot of success hunting squirrels in your landscape. We have having a squirrel hawking meet around Nashville in February that you can come hang out and watch lots of squirrels get got.
I believe it you have let her go by now that that is the right thing to do for her. If you havent, than stay determined. I have been interested in falconry for more than a year now, and when I came across your videos like three days ago I thought this would help me learn some, and it really has a lot a lot. I know you're no master falconer but I was wondering where you live (state wise) so I could maybe get advice along my way once or twice. Thanks for the education :)
Tough to see. I was just here for the Carol videos - trucks and paramotoring aren't my thing. I agree, seems like trying to take on too many hobbies at once. Falconry is super time intensive. Best of luck.
I think I know how you feel, you didn't fail Carol has a mind of her own, you will know what to do when the time comes trust your instinct some days are not going to be easy as you well know ,this a learning experience for you both benefit from it ,I think you are mad cool. This beautiful bird will always be a part of you. This will be a great short story book .
Good job on getting her back man I bet that was intense
Happened to me a few times, always got them back. Both times lost for 3 days and little bits of food didn’t tempt my hawks but simply laid a full rabbit on the floor and took around 5-10 mins to land on it. Patiently waited and slowly went over and grabbed the jesses. This happed with my male Harris hawk and also a female red. It’s tough when things go wrong but be patient my friend. Seems like a weight issue to be honest. I’ve been a hawker for 6 years now and each season I learn new things... Awesome sport!
Wow!! Most amazing and Intense video I've watched on your channel! glad you got her back
I feel for you, very real and emotional video.
Kinda old video by now, but good luck man.
Max me and my kids love your channel. I find by life experience the people who struggle at first with something tend to be the best eventually. Please don't give up we love all your videos but especially the falconary ones.
With the knowledge you've gained, it would be easy to do over at a later time. As an aviation enthusiast, falconry has always intrigued me. The time commitment that has been the thing that has stopped me from pursuing it beyond that. I subbed to your channel for the falconry, the paramotoring hooked me in deeper, but I'll stay for the vlog. You're a cool guy Max, make the best decision for yourself. Carol will be fine either way.
you called my dog like 20 times she pawed at the speaker...illl take carol I have a nice house
vadimxp 😂😂😂
I wanna see you keep trying don't give up!
Wow that was crazy.
These videos have been so good to see the other side of falconry. Some of us really appreciate your honesty and not just showing the smooth side of hunting but Carol being a creature who’s wild by nature and you trying so hard to form a bond.
Good luck man you inspired me to seriously consider Falconry in the future... All the best Maxx I hope you and Carol become the team you envisioned
Sorry Max, it’s unfortunate man but good for you for doing what’s best for carol. I hope you come back to this
Such great content Max! Love you realness🙏🏽
Thank you. As much as the falconry community hates that I share this stuff, this is real and I want to share how it really is.
Hey Maxx!
I started my apprenticeship this September. I think her weight is too high, she should be following you through the bush from tree to tree. I also use a lure instead of a sling shot to get my red tail down. For a lure I just attached a small piece of leather to some string, added a little elastic for bait. I also trained him on an emergency whistle. He know that every time he hears the whistle he's going to get a full crop (I'll give him a full quail). If she were on fly weight, she would have been after your gibbets as soon as you pulled them out. Same with the lure.
It's nice to see someone trying to help Maxx rather than tearing him down.
@@davidhunternyc1 I don't know why people are so hard on him. He's a beginner/apprentice, same as me. I know the hopeless feeling all too well, when your bird has no interest in you, you've been out for hours, tired sweaty and exhausted. It sounds like USA is just as anal when it comes to falconry as Canada does when it comes to the hawking clubs. My mentor is fantastic, owns pretty much every raptor you can imagine from snow owls to eagles. He does fundraisers, kids parties, etc, as well as commercial falconry (hunting seagulls and such around municipal properties). And even he is banned from our Ontario Hawking Club because he did a TV interview with a red tail and harris hawk..
That was a heartbreaker....I'm glad she finally came back.
Watching your channel has really been wonderful. I have watched because of Carol. I personally think you should only take up falconry when it's your only hobby. When you focused only on your falconry is when you got the best results from her. But thank you so much for all of the wonderful content!
Don’t beat yourself Max you have worked hard at falconry and sometimes it’s a matter of learning. You did the right thing letting her go. Falconry is so much work and training a bird is very demanding and hard (some birds I find harder to work with than others and personally I find Redtails stubbornly difficult). I hope you can find some relief in having the pressure taken from your shoulders for a bit. That said if you are still interested in falconry I do hope you will give it another go. It’s about learning from mistakes and sometimes just about connecting with the right bird. Either way whatever is in your future birds or not I will be here!
Man even if Carol isn't the one, you can always go for it again. I jumped myself into an extremely difficult sport as well, herding, and I've been at it for 2 years now and have felt many times like giving up, but I'm not going to I think. My dog and I are gonna keep learning, and maybe even if he doesn't work out as a working dog, the next one will. It's difficult, frustrating, expensive, everything. It's rewarding whenever anything good happens.
I've been a falconer for 45 years. I've lost birds, and I've released wild caught birds that were to difficult to train well. It happens. Live and learn. It's all about the outdoor, wild experience. I remember one year when 8 gyrfalcons were lost to eagles in Montana. The sport has its downside. But the upside is soooooo good. Spend sometime with master falconers and observe how they practice their craft. There are some amazingly talented guys and gals out there. Cheers.
Welcome to the Falconer reality. Something like that happens from time to time. Do not give up so fast! In my view, she was only a bit too heavy. This behavior, which tries to tear the flesh off the glove and fly on is typical of it. If she were fistbound, that probably would not have happened. My suggestion would be to always weigh her first and write down her weight and behavior at every day. Reduce her weight by 20 grams. Give her as much and as good chances to hunt and get to get to success. And fly with telemetry. Even if you think it is not necessary, it´s good for your nerves! Greetings from one of the few falconers in germany flying a redtail.
Dude I know this was stressful, but there's a reason you got her back. Give it time. It's not a sport everyone does for a reason, but you obviously had a calling to it. I know it all comes down to your decision. But remember it's the challenges that help us 'level up' to the next step in success. Good luck man, I hope you and the family are doing well.
It is easy to see you love her. I would give it one more shot, but in a place with less going on. Is there any place not very wooded or crowded out there? If she is too heavy she might see no point. Just one more time Maxx. Then you can be confident in your choice.
I just found your channel 2 days ago, because I’ve been interested in falconry. Been watching your playlist on your hawk, and now you post this video?! 🤬 now what do I do? A little piece of me has died tonight...
Ahhh I'm sorry man! I'm at least trying to show the harsh reality of falconry. This is deffinitly something you might face as you get into it. Dont let this discourage you from trying though. It's an incredible experience with or without success
Dude Maxx you made me shed a tear or two because I know just how much this meant to you. Don't ever be hard on yourself you've done one hell of a job taking part in a sport you knew nothing about. Whatever you decide to do about Carol know that you at least tried something out of your comfort zone and now take away more knowledge for future opportunity at reentering into this sport if you choose to get back into it. Just want to let you know that you've done a great job in educating folks like myself that might've never known about Falconry.
Even if you decide to let her go I respect your decision because I can tell you want the best for her. But hey if you are ever going through Utah County or salt lake county you are more than welcome to stop by and come along a hunt with us. We hunt a little differently here. We don’t use trees and we catch rabbits.
That was one heck of an experience. That's like me and my tegu lizards I had. I lost one in the yard and he ended up at a senior home. I lost another one and I searched everywhere in the yard and he was gone. I went inside to mope on the couch and he was in the kitchen looking for food
Don't give up! I love watching your videos! You can do it!
Max I am sorry that happened Carol is a amazing bird! Don’t give up on anything you do! You have been a big inspiration for lots of people! We all love what you do!
Glad you got her back ! Looks fun!
I subscribed because of this video. It shows discipline and integrity. Hope to see you try again soon.
heart pours out to you brother, you'll figure it out. I have FULL FAITH IN YOUR ABILITIES!!!
You are now a much better falconer today, than you were yesterday. Congratulations, well done.!
Great vid Maxx.20 yrs ago I helped a man I just met flush rabbits for his redtail and she had never killed anything. She took off after 1 and lost it in all the brush. She flew up in a big tree and never came down as it got dark. I still think about that bird and she wasnt even mine
Once you figure out the training steps it’s easy, just have to get there. Based on this video I would say weight is too heavy then other factors came into play with the wild birds. The calling she is doing is territorial not courtship. Good luck, hope you stay with it. Feel free to message me if you want to talk about training techniques
its been great to see and learn about Carol but I understand. She will be missedthe memories and lessons will still be there.
I dont know anything about birds, but maybe there was a territory conflict goin on with the other birds.
Yes it was the entrance to their territory and therefore there was a conflict.
I strongly believe that if you really are a fan of the channel you will stay no matter what happens. Everyone of the us from the Maxx Powell army here on youtube will always always always have your back and stick with you through the good and the bad. If you are a true fan you know whatever comes next will be even bigger and even better. I think its safe to say that a lot of us have your back no matter what!
Thanks brother I appriciate that. 👊
Don't move your house man. I accidentally saved a red tail fledgling, and not knowing much I was able to help her fly again. the trust/ easy food can have them come back. Love these videos. And for your first one, you did damn well brotha.
As much as I love watching these videos w/Carol and seeing you grow with her, first and foremost, she's a wild animal and will always have her instincts to survive on and go back to. There's no amount of training that will get that out of her. If you keep her, you have to work w/her daily, not just when you want or when its convenient. To be a "hunting partner" you gotta be part of her daily life. Animals who hunt together, partner together, live daily together and don't just do it when they want. Its their natural daily survival and to go from wild and free to confined, to even a large barn, that's no match for the complete freedom she had before. I feel like if you were to keep her, then you'd have to be fully committed to her every single day. I don't see what you do daily w/her, but her reaction speaks for itself. As cool as it would be to see you continue working with her, I'd say let her be free and wild. That would also let you continue to do the things YOU love and are more committed to and have time for, also less stress worrying about her and both of you would be free so to speak. No matter what you chose, you are still a bad ass bro, you still encourage A LOT of people to get out there and live like you're always saying. YOU are inspiring more people than you realize, if anything, just don't quit doing that. You are the man Max!
Your falconry videos are what introduced me to your channel. However, I really enjoy your other content as well. I hope you consider trying again in the future. I'll be sure to stick around and find out.
I plan to try a few more times with Carol dispite how frustrating it is
I think you would do a good job as a falconer; however, I was concerned when you picked up additional hobbies even when you had quite a few to begin with (keep doing things you love btw, and learn your limits). From what I've seen, falconers give all their outdoorsy adventure time allotment to their birds.
I give you credit for keeping your cool and continuing on to find her, personally I’d have been crying and losing my mind, but the Larpers were awesome
I am so sorry for the experience you had. Usually hawks are like that I think. ESPECIALLY red-tailed hawks who live solitary lives in the wild. If you continue Falconry, my personal preference would be a Harris’s Hawk due to their social actions and traits. Idk, I am pretty young and don’t know what I am talking about.
I had a lot of passenger Goshawks. Wen i get them, there was always in bad conditions . I got them from an other state. To feed them and train them, was my only thinking. Some are 2 weeks, up to 4 years in my hand . In opposite to former years, we have now a stabil population.
My heart breaks watching this video but don't put too much pressure on yourself. She found a lover like they all need. Please try again in the future. Best wishes.
Don't quit. you have the passion, just not the time with your other hobbies and you need your sponsor involved more. Take a season off and try again and learn from your mistakes this season.
Falconry has alot of ups and downs there is no quick fix to anything that's the beauty of it
