  • So I know the term "My pet hawk" is going to set some falconers off. I recognize the the fact that a Falconry bird should never be considered a pet, rather they are working animals. Treating my hawk Carol like a pet has led to her being a poor hunter and now i am trying to correct her behavior.

Preparing for the exam and The people possibly sponsoring me don’t even want to waste their time until they are confident young blood will be able to handle all the mistakes and patience that falconry requires. It’s a life long commitment you need to be aware of before you even get into the sport. Which is why it’s so hard to get new falconers that will do more good than harm.

I think it's important that you recognize what went wrong and are doing your best to correct it. A lot of people get into falconry for exactly the same reasons you did and run into exactly the same problems, and they end up abandoning their bird and dropping out of the sport because they get discouraged. Hopefully people will see this series and realize just how much work falconry is and what they are getting into and double down on their preparations before catching a bird. Birds of prey are not hunting dogs, you can't take them out a couple times a year and then treat them like pets when you get home. They require constant care and training, this is something that you need to treat more like a job than a hobby. I'm also glad to hear that your sponsor is getting more involved, I had started to get worried with how often you were saying he couldn't come out and help you. This is not something where you can wing it and learn as you go, you need someone with experience who can guide you through everything.

I was having some similar first season problems with my new Red-tail Maverick. He was getting seriously discouraged after seeing little to no game, and missing on the rare occasion he went after something. We traveled to the state meet, flushed up an insane number of rabbits, and by the end of the trip, he had 3 in the bag. Sincerely hoping this boosts his confidence enough to go after the squirrels we have back at home. Falconry is tough, it requires a lot of time and dedication, and is largely just problem solving. Learning to discern what behaviors mean what and how your actions affect those. It's incredibly challenging, and not for the faint of heart.

Hey Max I love your falconry videos...I’m aspiring to be a falconer from New York. EVERY chance I get to be near a falconer to ask as many questions as I can to make sure I do right by my bird I can and I love your videos especially, because you give an in-depth look at the lifestyle of a falconer...I learned so much from your videos that all the questions I could ask would never answer...it’s like a virtual experience. I will say something one falconer told me that may help you...they said “to keep focus on treating your bird right you must remember your role as a falconer. Your role is to take a passage bird who has little chance of survival, help develop its skills, and release it to the wild to be able to help another passage make its way through the first year.” He did say you can always keep the bird but expressed treating it like a teacher treats their students...you get a group of kids and no matter how attached you get once you’ve given them the tools they need for the future you let them go and get a new group to help ;)

Gotta say, I almost envy your relationship with that hawk. We get redtail hawks up here in the Gr. Boston area, and while I know they're obviously not the biggest, fastest or most powerful raptor, but there is just something about a redtail that I am drawn to, unlike really any other raptor. I ultimately would love to raise a baby redtail, and train it for falconry, and just be able to interact or scratch the bird's head, or whatever. Closest redtail I've seen as a few years ago at my nephew's peewee football game, and a BIG redtail decided to fly in and attach itself on the side of a large tree, maybe 15 or so feet from ground. Once word got out that there was a big hawk near the ground, in a few minutes 25-30 people suddenly all gathered around it, just "ooohing" and generally marveling at the magificence/beauty of this hawk. It didn't show any fear, even stuck around for about 20 minutes. Then when it decided it was time to go, the hawk swooped off, and everyone gasped and marveled again lol.

I'm not a falconer, but from what I've seen of videos of falconers that have done it for a long time is that once you figure it out, and there's not just one strategy besides the basics of the sport itself, it becomes much less stressful. That comes because they've learned what to expect. I can see why being new to the sport and not knowing what to expect can be super confusing and uncomfortable because you are trying to do what's right for a bird that is your responsibility and not feeling like you are doing a good job.
IMO, I think Max needs to put in the time and effort with Carol. I'm glad that he's decided not to put up unsuccessful attempts. I think videos like this where he talks about what he's been doing while showing excerpts as a means of illustration is perfect to his goals of being honest about his path as an apprentice falconer. At the end of the day however, I think he needs to be prepared to let Carol go after the two year mark, and that will be his true test of being a falconer. Whether he can do that, and move on with a new bird. That will be the point where he becomes a true falconer. Eventually Max will have the option of keeping a life long working bird, but Carol is not that bird. Max's priority with Carol is to get her into adulthood (something that few redtails are able to do; I think I've heard that only about 10% make it) as a capable hawk that can thrive as a hunter.

I think you might enjoy a great book called H is for Hawk by Helen McDonald...unfortunately her first hawk succumbed to aspergillosis, and she waited along time b4 getting another. there's a video on U tube called H is for hawk, the next chapter and it goes into great detail on what to do for success. She trained goshawks. Carol is one beautiful bird! I remember seeing a Red Tail perched on a wire, with a whole group of pigeons sitting underneath. It was like she was selecting who was going to be dinner. It seems they have a dialogue with who's going to die, so something right under her feet will be ignored, and something way over the other side of the field will be the prey because she needs something to chase! Good luck to you. I spend my time hunting with a camera...

I'd say your best option for hawk food would be to raise the quail yourself. They're fairly inexpensive and easy to keep, and if you get enough to start, the quail will keep breeding and you'll have a nearly unlimited stock of hawk snacks.

Holy shit I thought kids were hard to raise. I have a red tail in my holler. No really we live in a holler. With 20k cars in the middle hwy. He sits on the lines accross...the holler. 150 yards away. The cars are loud and cause a buffer so the bird can use sight

Skagit county falconer here. Thank you for making this video. I honestly have a lot more respect for you now. Hunting cottontails with red tails is something I know like the back of my hand and I would love to help you get rabbits under her if you’re interested. You usually won’t see the rabbit until the bird is literally on it. Here in western WA we rely on the bird telling us where the rabbits are and crashing brush to get to them. I have a made rabbit dog as well. You can get in touch with me through my old sponsor Geoff H. who is friends with your sponsor, or on Facebook, name Caitlyn Anne. Best of luck getting on track with the true purpose of falconry, it is truly an experience like no other. You’ll be addicted.

Gotta say, I'm also interested in what the wife has going on. I can see she enjoys your sports & hobbies, but I want to see her hobbies, too. :) But only because she mentioned cattle in the episode with the new house!

With that barn and the room you have to store food and weigh your Hawk, maybe set up a mouse/rat rodent breeding station(s) (its low cost to maintain). You probably only need one or two sets of breeding pairs and it should be adequate to sustain your hawk with that particular diet source.

You don't need to look at is so coldly. She can be both a pet and an excellent working animal. Why not.

She's trained to you her handler, and she's not trained on that bird watching her as a potential mating process. That other bird looks like a potential other male looking for love. If you have potential nesting territory and a loose male hawk sees it, they are going to find Carol. They will court her. You will see, as you exercise your hawk during mating season.

The reason I wont become a falconer is exactly because I would coddle my bird instead of being about hunting. This is why I have parrots instead of raptors.
You are doing good work with Carol

The reason you want to be a falconer is the perfect reason why you shouldn’t be a falconer. They are not cuddly animals and hunting is required in order to have the license.

I'm proud of you for sticking with it my dude! You've learned so much, and you're growing as a person through all this. Fuck the haters, and fuck you haters. Let the dude learn on his own! Humans in general and men, in particular, learn through trial and error and experience. Keep going man, stay patient, stay humble, stay teachable. Thanks for sharing your experiences failures and all. God Bless :)

Don't be upset by the comments, if people don't like your failed hunts then they shouldn't watch the video. You're motivated to make it work, people aren't perfect and neither are birds. Love the videos.
