One of the things the top managers did in the old days was to scout players not only with skill, but with character. Just look at SAF's United. And the old Liverpool didn't need a captain, they already had 4 or 5 players in the side you would not mess with....

Absolutely! We don't operate like a big club... Basler: “Bayern are very strict and, when they sign a player, his personality will have to fit in with the club.
“Sancho may be a good footballer but Bayern would not sign him because he’s not what they look for in a person.

The reason why United fans are Ten Hag in. Firstly, there is no alternative, especially in January. Secondly, stopping the cycle where the players have the upper hand in deciding when a manager can stay or get sacked. Finally, the players that are not performing and have stirred up drama (to a majority) are players who have failed under previous managers before. Simon brings up the point that it is the managers responsibility to fix the mentality of the players, but when he does, we get the Sancho's of this world. It is not about keeping the manager because he is the right man, but because the culture and habits need a turnaround.

@fbgenius9195 I agree with you. We have trigger happy people spouting ninesense not looking at the greater picture. Woodward created a culture of player power mainly through record signings and unbelievable wages. Ten Hag is doing really well to bring the Man Utd culture back. In 18 months, he's had to deal with Ronaldo, Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho, Antony and Maguire. Thats more issues than Pep and Klopp have had combined in 7/8 years. Once he gets the distractions out, we will see a consistent Man Utd, whether that's enough to win the league though, I'm not so sure as long as Pep is in England.

I desperately wanted Ten Hag to be the right guy, but he's done. Onana has been a disaster in the CL... but how many times does Ten Hag need to get embarrassed before he realizes you can't send so many players forward and leave your 6 to try to mark 2-3 runners. We're so easy to defend against, and we're so easy to counter because half the time bruno is in some ridiculous position out on a wing and McTominay is in their box.... they get the ball back, make 1 pass and it's free runs at the back line allllllllllllllll god damn game long.
Bournemouth should've been 5-0, and the manager even admitted he knew exactly what United were going to do and exactly how to defend / attack against it. We saw it 15 times last season, and this season it has been every game. We better hope whoever we play can't finish like everton or we're done. It's schoolyard tactics. Onana faces a seriously high amount of shots compared to every other keeper it's crazy our defence is so poor but that's what happens when you want to play a high line but can only field slow defenders who prefer a low block and will default to it leaving unbelievably large spaces in the midfield where they should be occupying. Plus they are not elite level ball playing defenders with high intensity which is what this system needs these players are still learning the new system if the coach is allowed to continue just like Arteta was he'll surprise everyone in the next two seasons. To be fair we have been dreadful in the league this season but not the champions league. The results haven't been good enough but the performances haven't been as bad as pundits say and it has been individual mistakes mainly by the goal keeper and in Copenhagen the red card that has knocked us out. Over 6 points have been dropped that way and we should have already been qualified. I'm sorry Simon, it is the players. The excuses the players have used in the last 6 years and leaked to the press is there for all to see. You say if there is no improvement why allow more time to continue making mistakes when everyone has to admit last season was far better than the season before so there was improvement. Last season was built on Martinez, Varane, Casemiro and De Gea while he was trying to sell Maguire, Mctominay and others. When those players are out of the side and his having to play players he wanted to get rid of while others are injured and we act surprised it's not going well while cheering those who shouldn't be here and will survive if he leaves.

Everyone knows city has more funds readily available yet city pays less for better players time and time again
So i dont to hear that people overcharge united because they know they have money.
The people doing the scouting and finacial signings have zero idea what they are doing and the club will never get better while they are signing these avarage players for INSANE prices

The glazers are SCUM....but any manager that thinks they can send so many players forward and leave the CDM exposed to try to stop 2-3 runners all game long is an idiot. Ten Hag has been exposed 20 times now doing this. Bournemouth Was humiliating. THe entire game bruno was in a ridiculous position, mctominay acting like a striker in their box... so it was as simple as work to get the ball back, then look up because you'll have 2-3 runners in acres of space with Amrabat trying to stop it. It was a free run at our backline alllllllllllllllll game long. Just like city, spurs, newcastle twice, brighton, everton & wolves but they couldn't finish, forest, galatasaray twice, copenhagen twice.... it's pathetic.

Jordan is a straight talker but I don't think his actual analysis is very good. United have played reasonably well in quite a few CL games and been let down by Onana and the red card for Rashford in Denmark. The two Gala games and the away Copenhagen game yielded just one point when really it should have been at least five, maybe nine. Not an excuse but luck hasn't been kind in what is an admittedly weak group

as a United fan (although admittedly not as ardent as your typical fans..) I agree wholeheartedly with what Simon says here. Used the term 'weak', I would go with "mediocre". It's just a mediocre team that's deflated of ego/belief/character and what it meant to represent the club in halcyon days gone by seems like a mere whisper on the wind. I mean, I think of a player like Cantona - more a self indulgent arrogant player, the flair of the Frenchman, but it felt like he was playing for the manager....for the cause. The club. The fans etc. And now they're just meandering in the wilderness, Liverpool did it for 30 years before winning a top flight title....United are one third of the way there. Perhaps it's just their turn in the cycle, who can say......
