I agree with Danny regarding handballs. Only give penalties if it's deliberate. In vague situations, no penalty should be given.
I think VAR should be used to validate a referee's decision and should have the final say, and not the other way round. It needs to expand to things like corners and throw-ins within a third of the pitch of the opponent's goal.

A potential solution to VAR that hasn’t been talked about:
Put the onus of the on-field ref to call for a review, rather than have VAR intervene and ask the referee to review something they may have missed - this is what they do in rugby. The ref can pause the game and allow VAR officials the time they need to check all necessary angles.
By having VAR officials ask the on field ref to check a decision, before they even see the incident they head to the monitor assuming they have made an incorrect decision.
If done in reverse, the VAR official can simply review it objectively and provide a decision. Of course, they may still get decisions wrong, but I feel that this would be a better way to implement the technology.

Tough call. Beyond that, getting a ton of former players is not the best call as we see their punditry consistently and the takes they give hourly can be seriously suspect at times.

I think each team should have 3 interventions per game. If a manager or captain decides to use one then the ref goes straight to the monitor and a replay is shown. However the replay should be one angle only, the closest one to what the ref would have seen in play and it should be shown in full speed. If the ref decides he made a clear error then he and only he can then overturn. Nobody but the ref should be making decisions and he should be making them in play ideally. VAR should be a tool to show a replay and that's it. As for offsides they can be done autonomously.

VAR is a tool, and if used correctly, a very accurate tool. If VAR operatives, and referees don't use it properly, then let us focus on the real issue which is quite simply the officials are either inept or do not understand the laws of the game. Either way, the VAR operatives and officials are not "fit for purpose"! There is another, rather worrying possibility - CORRUPTION! Sadly, I suspect the later might have some merit.
