I like how the winner said: "There's nothing we can do?".. He genuinely wanted his opponent to continue and keep testing. You don't see that kind of empathy everywhere.
I like the sentiment, and the winner was certainly bummed about how it went down, but it was the losing dude on the right that said “there’s nothing? We can’t do nothing?”
man stop the fairy tale I don't believe every single person in this show is genuin. Not after seeing him trying to act genuin wanting to "do something about it" while he know if that pole didn't crack he'd lose.

It’s brutal how they say “catastrophic failure” to the guy who already suffered a huge blow. Way to toughen a man up lol.
It is a technical term. People are used to it. The bend in the winners blade was a non-catastrophic failure.
It sounds harsh but it really is a term that describes anything that ceases to function as a result of or alongside it being physically destroyed
I think if the wood hadn't split he would have won, the other guys blade was bending and it probably wouldn't have survived a strength test

the first weapon had inferior metal, the second had inferior wood. both would have been destroyed in a strength test. IE its really sad knowing it was just a question of which weapon fell apart first.

What I like about this show is that the contestants are encouraging eachother. It's a mutual interest/respect thing rather than winning at all cost. It was especially visible this episode when the winner was clearly upset when the other weapon failed. It even performed better.
I love the acknowledgement of the impact of weapons in video games. History knows their audience.
Seong mi-na is Korean and her weapon is Woldo, which was spread from China to Korea. It is a different kind of weapon from Naginata in Japan. Woldo is a very heavy and powerful weapon that it is said to be killed by weight even if it is not cut.
In the Soul Caliber games you can purchase other weapons that have different effects. I think it started on the third game. A loop hole but it's there lol
China's Guan Dao is a formidable weapon too.
They did the Woldo in another episode- you can clearly see the difference between the heavy, powerful woldo and the light and agile naginata. I suspect with the lack of good steel in Japan in the early middle ages there was less armor so the weight wasn't' as crucial.
The guy who won was a great person. He is indeed the kind of person that deserved to win. He took the catastrophic failure from his opponent and asked if there was a way for the opponent to continue with modifications. That is humility.
When the guy who won said "There's nothing we can do?" I really felt bad...
It should be noted that the naginata that women typically used was the ko-naginata, which had a smaller blade than the men's o-naginata. This was because of the heavy pole which makes the naginata slower than a sword, and so the ko-naginata compensates for the women's smaller body mass and strength compared to an armored warrior. What they're making here is the o-naginata.
If you guys interested about: "Does it appears in any games or movie?" - Well yes, it is. The Naginata is appear in the game Samurai Shodown. The character using this blade is Senryo Kyoshiro!
Hisako from Killer Instinct also uses the Naginata
The only one i know of was Syeong Mina from Soul blade

It’s a beautiful weapon. But it’s construction was more complicated than people are willing to realize
It is nice the competitors show good sportsmanship
It's something I expected:
1) modern wood treatment makes it very vulnerable to splintering.
2) such tangs are often only held by 2-3 pins which can focus great forces in a small area.
The winner’s sportsmanship is so rare nowadays.
This show makes me hate damascus steel.
Damascus isn't that bad if done correctly like Alec Steele does.
@@azraeiazman Its not that. They all be like, im so special im going for damascus. But, why? If anything this makes me appreciate shiny plain steel.
@@giftsvampen right, like a good shiny polish steel blade would really be preferred over the Damascus that is almost never done up into any actual patterns.
@@giftsvampen ahhh I almost forget how clean plain steel looks. I actually love matte/sandblasted finish on blade. But mirror polish works too!
The fact is none of these are The original Damascus (Wootz Damascus) which it would be interesting if someone tried to do it, The Pattern Wielded Damascus looks nice and all but it's a different material.
Finally! The naginata was what I was waiting for!

I have seen to many ash handles break to trust this kind of wood. I would use beech or hickory or black locust instead. To my experience these 3 are the most reliable.

Pretty much what i’ve learned is that it usually comes down to the quench
Quenching is really easy to test if it happened correctly. Just using a file and seeing if it glides along without biting in. The most important part is the tempering. Which is almost never shown. The way you are tempering the blade changes it's characteristics to bendable or brakeable or right in between. Which is the most preferable.
It is really sad knowing "neither" of those blades would have survived a strength test.
if they say your blade is heavy, you better wish your opponent's blade will shatter in strength test

Even if it's months note that it takes alot of work to get the internal mechanism to even be able to work. Along side the little pieces.
If the gun explodes it'll be alot worse should someone be fatally injured.

He should've chose oak instead of ash, his blade looked way more stable and stronger then his counterpart's weapon was. Shame we didn't see more action...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but oak is very expensive, hard to shape and heavy to wield.
@@anomalyp8584 You are right, oak is more expensive then ash ( not 'very' expensive in my opinion) but is easier to sand and work with in my experience. And besides, we're talking about a slim wooden pole, weight won't make that much of a difference between those two.

The handles are nice (if a little on the thick side), but Theo's blade looks very light and thin for a Naginata.

My favorite part of this show is when they feel disappointment from winning on a technicality. Shows they’re here to really test themselves instead of win a quick buck

I always wonder why they dont make the poles from dryed young spruces cos it will not crack like dat
most of these people are hobbyists, they lack critical knowledge on the weapons, they put too much focus on the blades and forget that a weapon is made of multiple parts and the handle is sometimes more important than the blade.

Honestly, firing the handle a little, to where the seam begins and ends, probably would have helped a lot, too. Wood hardens with a little bit of toasting.

Yeah. It would be more accurate to call it a Woldo or a Hyup Do. Though I do believe a Naginata is one of her alternate weapons in some of the games.
I don't think that counts as a naginata since the blade is too thick

The judges should wear protective gear and execute every test regardless of catastrophic failure or otherwise.
You're not testing every weapon fairly then. Plus have you seen some of those failures?
Well depending on how the thing is forged it wouldn’t be practical or even possible to do that without harming yourself. I seen one video were the only thing that killed him off in the competition was the crossguard being way too oversized and thick that it would of broken the guys wrist and he was wearing a thick leather glove and it still nearly sprained his wrist
They should get Red-Green to be a judge on this show... "That there is why we have duct-tape. Now if you just *duct-tapes entire handle including the blade* there, that should do er' "
