And here is the last top ten for this month, a follow up to the Top 10 Most Effective MEDIEVAL Weapons which I know you guys liked, on this video we will go through the most effective weapons used by samurai and ashigaru in Feudal Japan.
The most iconic Japanese weapon is the katana; It is characterized by its particular appearance: a single-edged, curved blade with a circular or squared guard and long grip for grabbing with two hands.
The first use of "katana" (gatana) as a word to describe a long sword that was different from a tachi occurs in the Kamakura Period (1185-1333).
The katana became very popular amongst samurai due to the changing nature of close-combat warfare. The quicker draw of the sword was well suited to combat where victory depended heavily on short response times.
The katana was often paired with a smaller companion sword, such as a wakizashi, or it could also be worn with the tantō, a smaller, similarly shaped dagger. The pairing of a katana with a smaller sword is called the daishō.
The katana is generally defined as the standard sized, moderately curved (as opposed to the older "tachi" style featuring more curvature) Japanese sword with a blade length greater than 60 cm ( 23 1⁄2 inches). It is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single-edged blade with a circular or squared guard (tsuba) and long grip to accommodate two hands.

Miyamoto Musashi also preferred the Yari over the Naginata. Though I'm not sure whether the preference was inspired by 1vs1 fights, in contrast to battlefield fights. I can imagine that when battlefield fights get in close range, a Naginata might be preferable. It could be possible that the Yari was the preferred weapon because it could be made more cheaply and quickly, so Ashigaru armies could be raised quick.

It's too unwieldy for me, since the top is heavy and you need to hit with that specific part to effectively harm someone, also I'm limited with specific attack patterns with that weapon.
The Kanabo/Tetsubo has enough reach, impact, and balance to stop anyone with any part of the weapon, and also attack patterns can vary with it.

My main problem with the Masakari is that it's still unwieldy for me due to the weight of the axe head. My attack patterns are also limited due to the weight of the axe head and how it is designed. The time I'll be using it is during sieges where I can breakdown wooden walls and doors.
The Kanabo/Tetsubo is a good enough two-handed all arounder.

Once you learned how to wield a Yari, even the basics, you'll love it~
Thrusting, Sweeping and heck even "Pulling" is an attack with the Jumonji Yari.
You'll also enjoy how to parry with the Yari.

    • @gabzdark07

@@YukitoOnline I bet the Sohei could say the same about their axes. I'd never deny the effectiveness of the Yari spear, nor any large spear for that matter, but I also recognize that the higher strength requirement is well worth it. The dismounted knights favored a similar weapon called the Pollaxe, which was also quite heavy and evolved from the two-handed Dane Axe. These weapons lack the reach of a spear but make up for it with unrivaled striking power.
In your case though, you're right to stick with the Yari if you prefer it. After all you already know Sojutsu, and it's better to excel at one thing than be mediocre with many.

I also like how Nioh also incorporates battle stances with fitting attack speeds and animations for each stance. High Stance odachi attacks are very commonly vertical slashes for example.
