Consider the fact that Miyamoto Musashi favored the two-sword style, combining both a regular katana, and a shorter one for combat, and that what his father had created was essentially a japanese equivalent of a sword breaker/parrying dagger, and you can see the cool ways in which humanity comes to the same conclusions with slightly different answers. :p
Munisai Shinmen leader of the police force and the weapon was a Jitte/Jutte and he was known as the nations finest swordsman after a tournament in japan
The sensei's charming and happy attitude is something I did not expect people like him to behave. Interesting collection of weapons he has indeed too. Rarities too I see.
Ever since that first LAS video with Seki-sensei, I have been mainlining the JP Asayamaichidenkai videos. Part of it is because the style is just so fascinating to watch. But also because in my 20+yrs in martial arts in the States, I have never seen a sensei actually show joy in their art -- they're always so macho srsface about the whole endeavor. I wish I could take one class session with Seki-sensei.
Seki Sensei is clearly a very humble, but knowledgeable man. I can feel that he gets joy out of sharing these weapons and his knowledge with the world. It feels almost like a kid in a candy store, how joyful and almost carefree he seems at times. Truly amazing to learn from him.
That maro-hoshi/karakuri-jitte was easily the highlight of this video for me! What an interesting history with Musashi's father, and I love how it resembles a jumonji yari!
Jitte are grossly under rated in today's study of sword arts and related arts. It's kinda sad
This is one of the BEST and informative videos on Japanese weapons I've EVER seen! Japanese fighting pipe is officially on my wish list now.
It's interesting to note miyamoto Musashi's family had its own style of juttejutsu, which Musashi was trained in and wad the basis for his ryuha. So this is pretty cool as it gives us insight into some of what gave Musashi the basis for his style.
The longer smoking pipe is so similar to the Irish shelleleigh in both shape and techniques used. Wasn't expecting to see that parallel. Thanks for sharing some of kobudo's more unusual weapons.
I remember when I was a child and was learning Koi-kan karate, one day the master Sensei came from Japan to America to teach a class. We did not understand one word but we all understood the moves! It was an honor.

It's amazing how so many unconventional-looking weapons have life-saving uses in combat along with their more casual applications. I could imagine someone with the Tetteki flexing on their attacker by playing a tune as they dodge their attacks and then finish them off after the person finishes said tune or gets bored of the fight 😂. Also, my favorite samurai in the Samurai Warriors series (Yukimura Sanada) wields the yari so the weapon that could be used as one or a dagger is already awesome. It's like a customizable utility knife! Irrelevant to the video but I just finished your livestream. Your family is magnificent, and what a treat to see Zen meet his big sisters! I loved seeing him wiggling about on the bed. That was too precious 😍.
He seems like such a kind and funny teacher. Wish I could give him a hug. Also, you can tell how much he mastered his craft of knowing many types of weapons and passing it on to others wanting to learn. The best part is that he doesn't lecture or discourage his students when they mess up but do the opposite. That is the best kind of teacher. Sort of like how the kung fu masteres reward their students as I have seen. Usually, with a great meal or ive even see them take their child students to the beach and are like father figures.

The fighting pipe techniques are almost identical to Irish stick fighting, and has a very similar story, fascinating 🙏
Seki-sensei would be fantastic in a Skillshare-style masterclass. he just GLOWS when he's talking about this stuff!
Those are very unique weapons, but the rope dart is seen in Chinese martial arts. I like the jutte/spear weapon. It's like a multitool.
When I think of a keseru pipe as a weapon I can't help but think of the game series Ganbare Goemon where you play as a stylized version of the legendary Ishikawa Goemon who uses a giant kiseru as his main weapon and it had a hidden chain in it...he also threw Koban coins as shuriken. My first introduction to him game wise was the Nintendo 64 games...and since the franchise is from Konami a variant of the main four heroes shows up as Yu-Gi-Oh cards.
I saw the long smoking pipe and its use & instantly went back to my US law enforcement training. The strikes and blocks are identical to those used for a straight baton, especially since my first baton was an Army issued club. The biggest difference was we were taught open palm on the deflection side to prevent the opponent’s weapon from sliding down into your own fingers.

I had wondered if there were metal or steel flutes and pipes for a while now as they’re occasionally used for fight scenes in those 1970’s jidaigeki/matatabi/chanbara tv shows. Never heard of the karakuri jitte or the Chagatana before, so that was cool to see.

I make a lot of weapons myself out of scrap pvc piping and shoe strings. It's crazy how much stuff could be used around modern worksites.
So amazing this is something I am going to binge. Love the energy and wholesome nature. Hopefully some anime katana enthusiasts will up their knowledge and respect for the art. I know I look at swords differently

Interesting discussion and demonstration of Japanese history. It's been a amazing look at weapons of all sorts that were used around the world. Thanks for demonstrating the weapons styles of Japan.
Two unusual weapons I learned about is the Korean bow that shot short arrows. A section of bamboo was cut in half. Then attached to the bow string. The bamboo tray held the short arrows until they were released. When Mongol, Chinese and Japanese invaded Korea. The Korean archers could shoot the short and long arrows. All the invaders could shoot only long arrows. The Koreans were able to shoot the enemies arrows at the invaders.
The other strange weapon was the ribbon sword from India. The ribbon sword was a thin strip of flexible steel. A length of four meters. The user just slung the ribbon sword around like a section of rope. One single cut was devastating.
It's amazing to see the creativity of tools that have been developed over the thousands of years of human existence.

The rope dart and the iron flute are common weapons in Chinese martial arts. In my school we learn a flute form but with a longer flute. I think I've also seen smoking pipes in some Chinese styles. Great video!

wow, I had no idea the pipe was an actual weapon! I first saw it in the Ganbare Goemon Nintendo 64 game (we called it Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon in the US; not sure if you saw it while you were living here, Shogo) but I had no idea it was based on a real thing.

The throwing kunai is not very good if someone simply braves the blade, Similar to how many chained weapons are. We seen the principles of the spinning technique having some issues with people can get close and stop its momentum. Its a very interesting range weapon for sure though. Thanks for the cool video. I love learning about new weapons and arts.

So I’m a big fan of chagatana! I have every intention of someday making them and seeking to popularize them in the modern day.
I see strong relationships to Takamatsuden ninjutsu and samurai schools as well as Sasaki ryuden under Sasaki-rokkaku-shi Shinobi. I wonder if sasakiryu and ganryu were related to this art. I have found there was much unifying the people and art of Japan. The clan warring state did little to demolish this fact. Iga and koga couynot have been enemies before they were first neighbors friends or even family 😊
Woah, that jitte is very similar to a European weapon called a main gauche or a “left hand” dagger. The attached piece reminds me of German messers and bauernwehr as well; they have a third cross guard coming out horizontally called a nagel or nail.

The instructor returned his sword using a Koi Mouth ,an indicator of a genuine Japanese sword master ,many movies like "kill Bill" don't use that technique ,it makes me wonder who taught them sword play.
having some experience with the thrown dart there is another bigger weakness: a determined attacker can cover his face and throat and advance. The stab from the thrown blade isnt that deadly actually, its more about the fear of being hit than actually getting hit.
Throw at their feet you can generate more force with a downward throw than you can throwing vertically which most times deflects leaving only a nasty gouge it's easier to pin the foot to the floor and nobody expects it

If the Maro Hoshi was designed a little differently. It could also be used as a grappling hook. Never seen that before, until now. Yet, one of the coolest weapons I have seen. A ring at the pommel might help to secure a rope to it. Or some feet of chain and then rope. In this fashion it has the chance to be a multi weapon, multi tool and offer a good defensive. Reminds me my wife's friend is going to Japan and I'm hoping she might bring me back a hachimaki. I don't have many items from Japan. Yet I think it to be a nice piece to have.

Back in the day my younger sibling and I made some "rope darts" out of some rope with a balled kitchen sponge taped to the end, and even those could leave a bruise if we weren't careful when we sparred, and we def discovered the weakness to thrown weapons in the process 🤣

There's an entire kung fu style of bench fighting using a simple wooden bench as the weapon. Just as in Japan and many other places, overt carrying of weapons was banned so merchants developed a style using the benches commonly found in markets.
I was gonna say, is this Shogo talkin, sure enough it is lol.
An aikido coach once told me about this. Apparently a big part of the family was that the dad was a sort of policeman and the jitte was an element used to trap and break katanas in a fight. However I don't think Miyamoto Musashi used the jitte part on his katanas as he invented his own horseshoe tsuba.
I'm just curious, in this video Seki Sensei displays the Jitte that was developed by Miyamoto Musashi. Also in the 2 sword fighting video Seki Sensei ses Gyaku Nitoken and applies use of the "Juji Dome" position used historically by practicioners of the "Enmei ryu". Is Asayama ryu and Enmei ryu historically linked together?

Mr. Shogo, there is another branch of Asayama Ichiden Ryu that is sometimes taught in Nin Jutsu schools. Can you ask Seki Sensei about the relationship with Nin Jutsu?
I was in Japan recently and having a knife on your person is banned. They had signs on sushi knives that said you had to make arrangements to have the knife shipped if you were planning to buy one as a souvenir because they were illegal to carry from place to place.
Down through the ages swords were not weapons for the common man. Farm implements we're modified (such as tonfa) to allow people to protect themselves from people carrying swords.

3:05 unlikely Shinshintō era blades( the most common way swords would have been made at the time) are not as strong as earlier Kotō era ones but not that weak either.
