First time I ever see both contestants having to start over half way.
It's actually happened quite a few times. I believe there's one where both failed on day 3 of a 4-day challenge, but would have to hunt down which one that was.

As soon as Todd started bragging about using coal and going on about how people who didn't use it "didn't know what they were doing," I knew he was going to lose. And sure enough, he burns through the bottom of his blade because coal makes it hard to see how hot that section of blade was getting.
The truly great feel no need to put others down to prove their skill.

Literally five seconds into his rant and I just skipped to the testing to watch him fail.
I think I've only seen 2 finalists use coal in forging and still win.
it makes me happy that the pretty humble guy beat the super cocky guy even though he tried putting in all those details

He wasn't super cocky though. The most "cocky" thing he said was that people who complain about coal usually don't know how to use it properly, which even if it is ironic that he burned through his blade, it's also true that he still didn't complain because he knows how to use it and knew the error he made.

I love forged in fire, there are no awkward pauses or unnecessary filler to up the watch time. This show is just straight to the point and it's fantastic!

Any episode of Forged is a good one but I especially liked the contestants, their simpler, similar set ups and with the restarts. It will entertain

The weapon was still very used during the age of gunpowder. The advent of smokeless powder however did make the cavalry sabre obsolete
Id argue it was more so cartridges and “repeating” designs that really did it in, then tbh WW1 really was the last nail in the coffin as even in hand to hand combat they were too large to be effective in the trenches.
@@jeebusyaweirdo3733 Smokeless powder made those repeating designs far more feasible, and automatics possible.

Wait.....I've never realized this. Why did he wield a cavalry saber in Master & Commander? He was a sea captain. A sailor. What advantage would such weapon have while fighting on the ship?
And I'm pretty sure the regulations had men equipped with cutlassess since 1804. I want to say the Ottoman sailors used shorter versions of the saber in the navy; pictures show Oruc Reis and Barbarossa with pretty short curved blades pretty much identical to the classic cutlass (which came from European hunting knives) . The key point of boarding combat was to fight at close quarters, hence the use of musketoons, pistols and blunderbuss.
British Naval Officers of this period used blades similar to those depicted in this episode as did many infantry officers as it became increasingly fashionable circa 1800.

I have never seen a freshly forged sword with blood groves and rust on it.

Todd came across as arrogant, Dave came across as amateurish. Despite both these things, I think they both made good blades. I'm no bladesmith but I'd assume smithing with coal is a bit harder than with a gas-powered forge, so good on him for that. Overall, congrats to both.

The cavalry saber isn't really any different from a cutlass, they just changed the guard on it...
The guard is the same, the blade is actually different. It also depends on the individual model, some are closer than others.
The kill test sucks. Dave could destroy those ballistic dummy completely!

Apperantly it's rather easy for the blades to tank a bullet. I only know for sure that it's true for the edge and not the side/flat.
