Let’s be honest. The strengths test they mostly do are irrelevant. For example, on a battlefield you aren’t chopping pots or hitting a block of ice with your sword multiple times, they should do it on shields or other swords to mimic dmg the weapon could take in combat.
Chris Brooks you forget that always using shields and armor can be expensive in both time and money that’s why on some tests they use armor or shields and others they use the ice or pots which are way cheaper

To be fair, the 19-year-old had more modern and better equipment than the other guy, no doubt he's skilled but also much easier for him to create his blade. Props to the older guy, he basically created the weapon inside a shack, while the other kid had an entire workshop to play with.
Nonetheless the 19-year-old being aware of his advantages, took more risks in the conception of his blade and put more attention to detail. It is not as if he made an equally hard sword with better equipment, what he made is considerably harder to make without encountering failures in the process.
It's not the tools, it's how you use them
A art or trade doesn't mean someone is better because of equipment but rather the professionalism of the trade, someone can have the most basic forging tools and make the best swords, yes equipments are good but doesn't mean you are professional
@@unknownyoutuber2007 it's also the tools. One person is given a campfire, the other a forge and workshop - who wins, even if the person with the campfire is a master smith?
I guess the only way to fix that is have them make it at the studio cause then you wouldn’t have people whining that the other person has better tools and it’s not fair. Look at the old antique weapons they didn’t have crazy elaborate tools and they made beautiful works of art that functioned from nothing. It’s all about skill.

The Damascus pattern one picked up a slight bend during the kill test actually. He won though because his blade was not just prettier, but also so much lighter it was FAR easier to wield.
The Damascus picked up a minor bend, but the mono steel blade was heavy and they mentioned the rabbit fur blade it difficult to grip.

I've only watched 3 of these so far, but these two fellas weapons look miles above on aesthetics.
The sportsmanship’s these guys showed each other in commendable!!
If i've learned anything from watching this show it's that making a heavy blade in this competition is basically a death sentence
Well, yeah. You can kill one target with it, but also your shoulders. If you're on a battlefield, that's the last thing you want.
As in most things, it's a balancing act. You want a weapon heavy enough to be structurally sound and capable of inflicting injuries on your target, but still light enough to be wielded for extended periods without exhausting or breaking the user. I'm personally happy they've finally started punishing smiths who fashion ridiculously thick blades to ensure they survive the strength test.
@@thedutchwolf97 gee a guy clearly not built to wield the heavy weapon is having a hard time using it who could have seen that coming
Tom Jon not if your opponents blade is too light and snaps in half
@@DC-ru5xz well if it's made with proper tempering and good craftsmanship then it doesn't need a thick blade. Thinner blades have actually been proven to be better at cutting flesh and thinner blades have also been proven to be better at piercing armor, as it focuses all the force into one small spot rather than the wider area caused by a thicker blade. Lighter blades are also faster and can be concealed better. There's a reason the judges dont pick heavy blades, it only shows poor craftsmanship.
Did anyone notice that when Doug was speaking to Paul before he said," It will KEEL" he had no blood but when he said it suddenly he has blood sprayed on him which made him look even more maniac... Truly horrific

Both blades were monsters. Awesome job both.
Man, close one! I was rooting for both! They did a great job on these. Actually looked combat ready these weapons which can't be said for every weapon that passes through.
I like how he says kill as "keeel"
I'm glad the show is finally punishing overly heavy weapons that are too heavy to be practically used on real battlefields. Smiths in previous episodes could make impractically heavy blades that basically "cheat" through strength tests. The much lighter blade with the better grip survived the pot test without damage and was still razor sharp, which is why it won. If you look at large historical weapons, even dane axes weighed only 4-5 pounds and very long swords like Zweihänders weighed ~5 pounds (even heavy ceremonial ones were no more than 10 pounds). Single handed swords typically weighed 1-2 pounds while most two handed swords weighed 3-4 pounds.
Zweihänders lol, erwischt 😅👌🏻
Its not really cheating. If you were making a blade and knew that Jay Nielsen was gonna bash it against a brick wall 10 times you'd make a heavy blade as well
@@hakobbasilfan4644 It's technically not cheating, but it's exploiting the lack of standards/consistency in the show's rules to beat the strength tests by making something that doesn't resemble the historical weapon because it is much too heavy and impractical for the battlefield.
@@Intranetusa I thought they have parameters / limitations on length, weight etc.
So if it still is in range of those parameters, then I don't see any issue.
If the judges think weapons are often too heavy, then they need more strict regulations / limits on the accepted weight, very simple.
No way dude. The thin Damascus blade bent on the first strike to the dome. But somehow that's more battle ready in your eyes? Paul's blade should not have won.
Two very well made weapons. Both deserving of a spot on the wall.
I am impressed by Paul's work. He made the Damascus steel which required extra work and also it was light weight.

very nicely conceptualised! Most of reality competition show useless drama and waste our time.
This is really good.. Wach of the forgers have a zen mindset and are respectful..
Almost EVERYONE that tried Damascus pattern got bodied. STOP showing off.
Well the whole point of Forged in Fire is to see who can make the most durable blade. And since Damascus Steel is a bit harder to work with due to the many problems it may have, only the best of bladesmiths can make a good Damascus sword. Sure, it may be useless in a real sword fight but in competitions like these then impressing the judges are everything. If two people make exactly the same blade except one uses Damascus and they both fare exactly the same in the tests, judges are more likely to pick the Damascus blade as it is much harder to work with than using just one steel type. So that's why people use it, because if it works well then it will be more likely to win.
The other guy stuck fur on his weapon for no reason...
Wow I definitely did not expect that outcome. A bit heavy vs a bent blade? I thought blade integrity would be far more important to them. That endurance test was a bit too easy imo.
I would say the thin blade has an edge on the sharpness test too. Because it cut through pineapples while the halves of the pineapples head are still standing there, not falling off. Meaning there is less resistance while cutting
BRO LETS GOO my boy from Connecticut did it. I’m from Connecticut and I have to say you don’t see a lot of ppl from here make it to the top so congrats man

Another win for a Damascus patterned blade, I'm surprised, I thought it would break like the others. Still, he was lucky with the strength test, I don't think metal is generally worried by pottery. Which is why you don't see armour made out of crockery.
The other point, the other blade was too heavy? By who's standards? Some people might find it perfect.
They judge it by their standards. And the dude who made it even said "it's a little on the heavy side"
@SomeRandomGuy you have to use it all day in battle, the lighter the faster
@SomeRandomGuy weight affects how easily you can recover from a missed swing, with a weapon that's heavy or unbalanced you'll either be too slow to bring it back towards your enemy and leave yourself vulnerable to an attack or you'll tire yourself quicker and get killed by the next guy. Heavy weapons are something to avoid, of course you don't want something flimsy but a light weapon can still be remarkably strong if properly tempered.
It was perfect for me...too heavy yet I could balance it on 1 finger...let that sink in...
@@Sp00kq I have to say that. If you ever been on the show, they make you spout off all types of generic sayings so they can use them to edit voice overs into the show at their discretion. I never once described my weapon as too heavy to them. Its a trick with editing. The weapon was and still is perfect. I take it out often and chop limbs with it...and haven't gotten tired yet. This is a big man's weapons...not a small mans...

What... no strength test where you slam the blade into a 2ft thick log. Pounding into 2in armor?
That kid's light weight flimsy blade would of shattered.
He picked up a bend against the gel dummy...how do you have a strong blade warping from gel and bone?
Yeah jr was fortunate to get the pots instead.
Yah the first and easiest test warped his blade i understand its more lightwieght and wieldable for longer but say theres another 3 gel dummies that blade will be fubar at least the other weapon being heavier would of cleaved thru them all
@@darthsidioustheemperor7976 From what the judges were saying about the heavier weapon, you wouldn't be able to cut through 3 more gel dummies without destroying your shoulders. It doesn't matter how strong a weapon is if you can't wield it.
Today we will test your katana's by beating them on these granite slabs repeatedly with full force. Oh, your katana took some dulling, bent the blade 90 degrees, what a bad smith you are...
Warping is not the same as snapping. In fact, it might be opposite problems. Warping/bending means the blade is a bit soft and malleable, while snapping means it is too hard, not malleable enough, and too brittle.
