George and Lewis were FLYING this weekend, well maybe not compared to the Red Bull. But compare their pace what they had in Miami, or Imola - and their car looks entirely transformed..
But really, the Merc engineers only changed a couple of small bits - so how did it make such a difference?
Lewis was able to come from the back of the pack to P5, and George was able to keep two Red Bulls behind him for most of the race - and then finish in P3.
So let's get our airheads on, and figure out how they went from rattling the driver’s brains out - to actually having some straight-line speed. Lets go.
Now we know why the bouncing is happening by now - the floor generates downforce that increases as the ride height decreases - up to a point. When it gets too low - the airflow stalls in the aero-tunnels and the downforce disappears - popping the car back up.
But what was going on with the Mercedes was a little different.

Seems for Monaco they have an entirely new problem, which on the surface sounds the same, but according to Mercedes is different. Now the stiffer car is causing bouncing issues on the street circuit, really has not been the best of season for Mercedes this year.
Mercedes were the best at the very advanced and complex suspension tricks as well… all that got taken away this year. Which didn’t help them.
But yea, they had to run it so stiff to get rid of the porpoising that now in Monaco it has no compliance and it’s just getting thrown around on the bumps.
Yeah, this video aged too fast.

A bit confusing to start the video with "this weekend" after the next weekend has already started
I absolutely love these technical videos! They really help alot to understand what's going on!!! One other thing, Scott is a genius!
I'm not a Merc fan but I expect they'll figure this out and become viable at the top again. This is a seriously technical sport where the cars are on the ragged edge of performance. Very complex and not as easy to diagnose as it seems on the surface.
Why is the video so late? Monaco is already underway
Welcome to armchair mechanics the comment section.
The car being too stiff is completely different to porpoising.
You can't just develop and bring in a "simple solution" overnight.

Lewis: "This bouncing is crazy man. I'm losing my mind. Gonna need elbow pads in here. The bouncing is horrendous."
That track is bumpy on it's own it's not really the porpoising doing the damage but rather the track
Another clown who can't tell the difference between porpoising and bouncing because of bumps 😂🙈
@@PaulKentSkates the only edit I made to my original comment was that I replaced a ; with a :
So you can’t tell the difference between suspension and aero, smooth brain?
In efforts to try and contract the porpoising Mercedes made their suspension stiffer and stiffer. Now that they are on a track that is very bumpy the super stiff suspension is causing the car to bounce around a lot more. It's a complicated issue but the bouncing merc are experiencing at Monaco is a different issue from the porpoising they experienced earlier in the season

That was a great, really comprehensive summery of mercs woes!
maybe for the lower speeds of the monaco circuit they can go back to the earlier floor which was good in the lower speed sectors as shown in other circuits?

So after seeing the race in Baku. I'm a Acoustic consultant and sometimes I deal with vibration. Surely Mercedes are exceeding whole body vibration safety limits. Lewis complained his seat was getting cold at the end of the race. That sounds like temporary nerve damage. There are so many other health problems.
I hate this season cars. The sport doesn't look great when even the best teams are skipping over the track.
Any insights on Schumacher's crash in Monaco? It seemed very weird
Thank you for the in-video advertising count down, always know how far to skip ;)
well.. not that simple after all
F1 needs to publish the car's weight every round. This is the first year in ages that cars have been overweight and it would be interesting to see how the weight is deduced throughout the season
What’s the punishment for being over weight? I know it produces slower lap times but does the FIA or F1 hand our penalty or something for cars that don’t meet the weight requirement? Seems pointless to have a limit if nothing happens. Would love to know
@@noahlogsdon7353 The only punishment for being overweight is a slower car. If underweight, DQ
@@noahlogsdon7353 There's only a punishment for being underweight... No punishment for being overweight just a car that has a tractor's pace

Mercedes is bouncing because of their suspension stiffness and bumps in Monaco, this is not an aero problem.

@@alunesh12345 we believe In Jesus, But as a prophet. We believe in Allah
Great analisys
The haas is doing good on weight because they got to scrape off all that blue paint 👏
Considering how none of of their programs or algorithms was able to replicate purposing how were they 100% sure that the weight penalty would not be worth it to stop the porpoising
They know what it can theoretically do, they know what it does when porpoising and they know how much slower a certain amount of weight makes the car. If they know how much weight they have to add to make it work, they can calculate if it will be as fast as the simulation, and if it's worth it. Now that other parts are lighter, then can afford the extra weight.
Well they can run simulations to determine how fast they would've been without porpoising and therefore they know how much porpoising slows them down. They can simply run the simulation again with the added weight and see how much slower they are +/- compared to the simulation of the current weight and the race results with the porpoising. Not as accurate as it could be, and I could be wrong, but thats how I assume they do it

I’ve not seen any comments about the new 2022 car, has cleaned up the dirty air behind that wasn’t allowing close drafting.
I told y'all it was floor flex ages ago. Its the chassis having not been engineered for ground effect forces. It was designed to take loads in the complete opposite direction then its getting with ground effect.
Im curious if they could somehow preload the chassis with some embedded cables.
I see Mick Schumacher 'redesigned' the Haas at Monaco

is this driver61 or driver91 ?
This video is. Ironic, Mercedes’ proposing is back…
No it's not.
They weren’t using the upgrades from Spain.
Nope, the porpoising is not back (meaning its not as bad as before spain), the car is just EXTREMELY mechanically "stiff" meaning it is very tuff and reactive to bumps and so on the track
@@canismajoris6733 yes 💀
It's mechanical bouncing not aerodynamic, it's not being caused by aero and the new parts were not on the car today
This aged well, Monico bouncing all over
There was no real way to check if the Mercedes cure for porpoising during the Monaco race as street circuit with no long straights. Azerbaijan race. although still a street circuit has a,
mix of slow corners, fast corners and some long fast straights so a better circuit to see if their updates work.
You jinxed Mercedes with this video lmbimp 🤣😂
How? They are bouncing because of the bumps in the surface of Monaco, it's not the same as porpoising
Mercedes also took 2 new and improved engines in Spain
Yes, and RB is still on their first (amazingly). I hate to say it but I feel like RB is gonna be running away with the title quickly this year...
Hamilton might argue the "solution" part
I'm sure they'll find a new excuse.
Not agree with what you call laser ride height sensor on the front. This looks like a "Datron" which measures actual movement of the car on the ground to get the slip angles.
Given the training session today, I would not call the genius in all-case.
Thanks
Floor not stiff enough eh? My take is that maybe Mercedes should not have gone with as narrow an engine package as they did. With body work sitting above the floor, I would say that the floor could have been stiffer from the start so they'd have been a more predictable and, likely, faster car due to ride height drop allowing more downforce generation overcoming any drag induced by this solution.
6:50 second to only Ferrari? What?
And rip to that statement in the end, the Merc has big issues with the uneven road...
I'm not used to hearing Brits pronounce Haas correctly. And there were 2 in one video! Nice.

8:38 yeah... no.
ok I guess it's not that bad but still...
Who else is coming back to this video after Monaco and Baku where Lewis got out the car holding his lower back after how bad he was porpoising
You would think the computer analysis would show flexibility for the floor. It's Mercedes!?!?
You literally cant reproduce the bouncing in the sim, windtunnel or CFD. None of the teams saw it in their pre season design phase.
They can sim the flexing floor but they simply can't simulate the bouncing.
That's the problem with finding a fix, without actually bolting on the new parts and testing them on a real car, going around a real track, you have no way to know if your fix will actually work.
George is still beating the Kneeling One. Well done
These comments ignoring that everyone was bouncing in Monaco
I wonder if Mercedes tried to be sneaky and build a lot of flex into the sides so they start behaving like skirts.
Mercedes should recruit people from Lockheed Martin considering they can
