    • @austinreed5805
      @austinreed5805 Před 2 lety +19

      @Arif Al Amin I’m pretty sure most countries have been in conflict with other countries, for most of their history. Just look at the UK, France, or Germany, for example. The reason why Russia is not being raced at is because it is invading another nation for power, while the US’s recent wars were over terrorism and the protection of American citizens from these terrorists. Unfortunately, the war lasted longer than it should, but now the US has pulled back its troops. In your mind, the only countries that could host F1 are Sweden and Switzerland.
      Sorry, but just calling other people “maniacs” just because they don’t agree with your viewpoint is pretty ridiculous.

    Worth pointing out Lucky Strike were involved with the then 500cc, now MotoGP, Suzuki team in the early 90s. As was, hilariously enough, Rothmans as welll. Was there a series Rothmans didn't at least try to end up in?
    Also no. I instantly thought of the Arrows for some reason and then in quick succession, the Jordans, with the hornets and snakes. That team had some hella talented artists working for them. Gotta love the Bitten and Hissen, and the Buzzin Hornets one too.
    Also, yes, Red Bull was, for a time, banned in France too. Kind of awkward for RBR too..and I swear France had some of the best ways to get around the ban on cigarette adverts. The R ? and such.
    Also, yes, the vid/article didn't say it but you can take a wild guess why the Middle Eastern nations look down on alcohol. it's not just limited to F1, however. Motorcycles have very, very prominent Coronoa (ironic) branding, the Mexican beer before they change their name and they'd do what Gaulois did. The Go!!! (which is another fantastic way to get around the restrictions too come to think of it. made the team look quicker than theyy were. Hello late 90s Prost. Backmarkers with a fantastic livery and that one GT team running a Viper in the early 00s, or was it a Corvette?)
    Also those rules applied double so to F1 videogames too at the time, too

      Rothmans was the title sponsor for the Honda factory team in the old 500 cc from 1981 to 1993 I think. Repsol, the current sponsor, replaced them in 94 when they got the Williams sponsorship. Found an old CD of the (admittedly awful) Rally Challenge (not to be confused with the much better and later released Rallisport Challenge), which had a lot of 555 branding in it, up to and including, a biography of the company, and shots of the 555 sponsored Scooby for menu backgrounds, now granted when you had the menus up you couldn't see a lot of it

    The first tobacco company/livery of any note was the first sponsor as you showed. JP Gold Leaf, then the JPS black & gold Lotus of the late 70s. It's so iconic that the modern "Lotus"/Renault team copied the colours. IIRC wasn't it voted to be the most beautiful livery ever or something like that?
    Tbh, I'd rather see non-tobacco products on the side of cars (especially the ones to help you give up) than any gambling ads. Gambling causes millions of families a great deal of misery throughout the world, especially in certain countries where it's virtually as commonplace as eating. But even where it's regulated by governments (yet still allowed, such as the UK), many families are destroyed every year by one member's gambling addiction.
    I don't know where I heard this, and I won't stand by it if someone has the actual data and can prove it wrong (it just seems to make sense to me), that gambling has more negative effects on the whole family than a single person drinking too much or smoking (as long as they don't smoke in the same room as kids).
    As debts pile up, gamblers will beg, borrow and steal from the immediate family, then the extended family, until someone says no or they all run out of money - in some cases they give initially because they're lied to regarding why the money is required (bills, a sudden breakdown of necessary appliances, school supplies...) then it's to "save the gambler" (and maybe their immediate family) from "violent people", who may not even exist. Emotional blackmail is an incredibly powerful weapon. Not only will the gambler and their own spouse & kids lose their home, but other family members can end up losing theirs too. And desperation can lead to violent acts in much the same way alcohol can turn otherwise nice people into monsters.
    F1, the FIA and world governments should work together on what is acceptable and what is dangerous to advertise. Tobacco, alcohol and gambling should be high on the "banned" list IMHO.

    Fun fact, if the idiots at Codacons didn’t sue Ferrari for the Mission Winnow part of the livery many of fellow Italian enthusiasts(myself included) wouldn’t even know that was something associated with cigarette brands because we honestly didn’t care a bit, we just thought the green looked awful and that was it.
    But hey, they had to make a big case out of it and - the irony - now basically everyone knows what Mission Winnow is and that it’s related to smoking(or its alternatives) 🤦🏻‍♂️
