  • Formula 1 title sponsors are sometimes just as iconic as the cars their names are painted on. But have you ever seen a sponsor and wondered “What the heck is that?”. We have too. Join Nolan and explore some of the sketchiest sponsors in F1 history; some recent and some almost too far fetched to believe. Also, we’ll figure out what the heck a Mission Winnow is.

The notion that a race car sponsoring a brand of tobacco is the reason a kid decides to buy a packet of cigarettes is rubbish. I started when I went to college because a lot of my peers were, when I left college and not in a constantly in a social bubble where it was the norm I quit. Majority don't start due to sponsorship of a race team of football strip, it is because parents and society and government keep telling them not to and it's an act of rebellion driven by curiosity, and where one starts their inner circle follow like sheep especially if the cool kids are doing it. Tobacco advertising is outlawed in many countries because it literally encourages people to pick up habits that cause addiction and subsequent deterioration of health, causing big companies to make a profit out of people's addiction and their health. Alcohol on the other hand is not biologically addictive, and also way less harmful, so it's still allowed in most places. Both should be banned if you ask me. Heineken for example sponsors many races, but they try to cover for themselves making a point about not drinking and driving.

I remember seeing an interview in which Patrick Head from Williams in the 1990s saying that for a decal on the front wing that he said wasn't 'television-visible' (i.e. too small to be seen) was US $2,000,000 per season.
